Nationwide Reduction in Staffing

A nationwide epidemic is being observed in the volunteer / paid-on-call fire service with regards to staffing. Every department is struggling to obtain a full roster due to increased training demands (mandates), the time required for participation, and various other reasons. We are seeing an increase in both providing and receiving mutual aid during calls for service.

Planning for Mutual Aid

The Newaygo County Fire Chief's Association will be reviewing our local policy surrounding dispatching procedures for structure fires, personal injury accidents, and various types of rescue to ensure that adequate personnel are responding. We have a unique dynamic in Newaygo County where our nearest mutual aid departments are still quite a distance away. In so much, we have been working to strengthen our mutual aid relationships to ensure the most cohesive working relationship possible on emergency scenes.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to review our department's 2018 Annual Report.

We continue to grow with the community, which has directly correlated to our increase in calls for service. We have seen a 3% increase since last year and a roughly 25% increase over the previous five years. Our personnel take pride in serving their community with honor, integrity, and superior service.

Mutual Aid Responses

These few incidents represent large scale emergencies where several agencies, some from other counties, were required to respond as mutual aid to assist the primary department. In 2018 we received mutual aid 53 times from our neighboring agencies and provided mutual aid 41 times.

Mission: To provide a level of service exceeding the expectations of the community that we serve, through public education, safe rapid response and a superior level of care.

Vision: We envision a fire department as one unified membership working toward a common goal, providing the highest level of community service through integrity, pride, commitment and to have the best trained and adaptive firefighters in Newaygo County.

Training to be the Best

The Newaygo County Fire Academy will be held at our fire station beginning in early 2019. We have two certified fire service instructors as well as two probationary instructors that will be teaching a significant portion of the classes. It is our goal to have the best-trained personnel responding to emergencies for our residents and visitors.

ii

Training Saves Lives!

A true testament to increased training is the life-saving award commendations that were recognized during 2018. This included incidents where our personnel provided medical / rescue care on a scene that directly contributed to a patient's survival.

In Conclusion

The job of a paid on-call firefighter is 24/7/365 and is extremely demanding for our personnel and their families. As we push forward into 2019, we want to thank the community, our municipalities, the fire district board, and our families for the support that allows us to do our jobs to the best of our ability.

We pledge to continue working hard and providing the best service possible.

Regards,

Jason WolfordFire ChiefNewaygo Fire Department

Each year, Newaygo Fire Department participate in numerous events throughout its district and beyond to raise awareness of smoke detectors, fire prevention measure and more. From visiting areas schools to hosting a fire prevention night, we enjoy being involved in the community.

MAKING A BIG IMPRESSION: Chief Wolford and Firefighter S. Bird speak with kids at Newaygo Public Library.

Firefighters of the Future:

On June 26, department members took part in story time at Newaygo Area District Library. Children had the opportunity to learn important fire safety lessons and what it takes to serve our community as a paid-on-call firefighter.

Community Outreach Events

In 2018, members attended many community outreach events including 9/11 Day of Service, Community Block Party, Newaygo County Kids Day, and more. The department also provided medical standby for home football games and many area races.

Supporting Girl Scouts

This year, during the annual Pancake Breakfast, members supported local Girl Scout Troop #4581 by having them sell baked goods and crafts to help raise money for their trip to Savannah, Georgia.

Fire Prevention Week School Visits

This year, during Fire Prevention Week in October, members took time out of their work schedule to visit area children during school to educate them on how to stay safe during a house fire. The children are given a tour of apparatus and have opportunities to ask questions to firefighters.
