2017 in Review

When Parx hosted the nation’s best here in September, there were three significant firsts that were all major positives in the continued development of the track’s biggest day. Having been unanimously voted an upgrade last fall, the Pennsylvania Derby was run for the first time in its history as a Grade 1 event. It proved all the more significant to the three year-old calendar when longtime prestigious preps, the Blue Grass Stakes and the Wood Memorial were downgraded to Grade 2 races. It was difficult to imagine the day when our local Derby would be viewed with greater stature than those two major races, but indeed that day has come. Also, for the first time in the history of the track, the Derby and Cotillion played host to both the 3YO male champion and the 3YO filly champion in the same year. After the top three year-olds in the spring began to fall from grace, the door opened for the emergence of West Coast, a Bob Baffert trained colt that won both the G1 Travers Stakes and G1 PA Derby in the fall before running a very creditable third in the G1 Breeders Cup Classic to close his season. While Abel Tasman came up just short in the Cotillion, four G1 wins on her resume earlier in the year stamped her as the nation’s top 3YO filly. Those two would be honored with Eclipse Awards in late January. And finally, racing’s most recognizable figure, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert made his first-ever appearance here at Parx. Travelling less since a 2012 heart attack, Baffert made the trip east when assistant Jimmy Barnes was injured and unable to attend. His graciousness, quick wit, enthusiasm and patience endeared to him all who had a chance to cross paths with him during the week, all hoping that circumstances would lead them to once again have the opportunity to share time with the trainer who has meant so much to the sport’s recent history.

Once again, the competition for the years’ top jockey was all about Frankie Pennington. . 2017 saw him win his fourth consecutive riding championship at Parx and fifth overall. His total of 120 wins were 21 better than Mychal Sanchez. Pennington, last year inducted into the Parx Hall of Fame, now becomes only the second rider, along with fellow Hall of Famer Kendrick Carmouche, to win four consecutive titles. Another win in 2018 and Frankie will stand alone. If there was an award given for the track’s most improved rider it would almost certainly be Sanchez. The career best season for Mychal has clearly established him as a force in the jockey’s room.

For the second straight year, trainer Patricia Farro won the trainer’s title. Her 76 wins were 6 better than John Servis. She is only the second woman to win back to back titles, following Jayne Vaders who won both 2006 and 2007. The top percentage trainer in the top ten proved to be Freddy Velazquez. The longtime Parx fixture finished the season with 33 wins from 145 starters. Do the math and that’s a terrific 22.75%

For the second time, the Hall of Fame welcomed Sal DeBunda. Already inducted in the “Notables” category, Sal became the first person to be elected in multiple categories, this year, going in as a Hall of Fame owner. The only other inductee was former Eclipse Award winning writer Dick Jerardi. A main stay in the local media for decades, Dick has written about and promoted the sport like few others and was elected for his tireless efforts over those many years to the sport he loves.

Executive Officers

Robert W. GreenChairman and President,Greenwood Racing, Inc.

Bob Green, in partnership with William Hogwood, formed Greenwood Racing and subsequently purchased Philadelphia Park (renamed Parx Racing in 2010) from International Thoroughbred Breeders Inc (ITB) in 1989. Mr. Green brought extensive expertise in gaming from his tenure with the William Hill Organization in the United Kingdom, one of the largest gaming organizations in the world. After 27 years with William Hill, Green had risen to Chairman and CEO before leaving to found Greenwood Racing, Inc.

Mr. Green has brought many technological advances to Parx Racing since Greenwood Racing’s purchase of the track. Prior to founding Greenwood Racing, he began Satellite Information Services (SIS) in 1985, a company that developed the satellite technology to broadcast live races throughout Europe. Tapping into his experience with SIS, Bob brought Parx Racing to the forefront in this area of the industry by expanding the full card simulcasting and Phonebet operation based at the track.

Joe WilsonChief Operating OfficerGreenwood Racing, Inc.

Born and raised right here in Northeast Philadelphia, Mr. Wilson has worked in the racetrack business for more than 30 years. He began with a stint working for AmTote at the old Keystone Racetrack in 1982 and stayed with them until 1999 when he was hired by Greenwood Racing as Director of Wagering Services. During his time with AmTote, he estimates that he worked at more than 30 tracks across North America and managed the operation at Parx Racing beginning in 1993.

He remained in his role as Director of Wagering Services until 2002 when he was promoted to Vice President of Operations while also assuming the role of the racetrack’s General Manager. In May of 2007, Mr. Wilson received another promotion, landing him in the seat as the track’s Chief Operation Officer and he greatly looks forward to the many challenges he faces in this new era at Parx Racing.

Location

Parx Racing is located on Street Road in Bensalem, PA, three miles west of exit 25 on Interstate 95 and one mile east from US Route 1 and exit 351 of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. It is approximately 30 minutes north of center city Philadelphia and 40 minutes from Philadelphia International Airport.

Facilities

Parx Racing’s main track is a one mile oval with a 1 & 1/4 mile chute and a 7/8 mile chute. The main track surface consists of sand, loam and clay and is maintained for year round racing. The turf course is 7/8 mile with a 1 & 1/8 mile chute. There is stabling for 1,600 horses as well as 12 single level dormitories for grooms, hotwalkers and exercise riders.

Our Picnic Grove provides something for everyone in the family. Wagering Pavilions, Picnic Pavilions, BBQ grills, My Juliet Bar, umbrella picnic tables and a playground for the kids.

Parx Racing is a non-smoking facility. No outside alcoholic beverages are allowed on the premises.

The Pennsylvania Derby (Gr. l)Since its debut on May 28, 1979, the Pennsylvania Derby has drawn some of the brightest stars, both equine and human, that thoroughbred racing has had to offer. The 1 & 1/8 mile event for three-year-olds has attracted many illustrious individuals who have shown their talent, courage and heart to appreciative racing fans. In the early years, WCAU, a local television station from Philadelphia, carried all the color and flavor of Pennsylvania Derby Day live on raceday. Their coverage of the day’s events, including the Pennsylvania Derby Parade, earned them an Eclipse Award for local racing coverage. In 2016, the PA Derby was upgraded to a Grade 1 event.

The Dr. James Penny Memorial Handicap (Gr.lll)In the year 2000, Parx Racing instituted a new stake race honoring the memory of the late Dr. James Penny V.M.D. “Doc” Penny, a veritable institution around the backstretch, was the Association veterinarian for over 25 years at Liberty Bell and stayed on when thoroughbred racing moved to Parx Racing (then Keystone Race Track). Well into his seventies “Doc” would be seen making his rounds doing pre-race exams in the morning and observing the post parades in the afternoon insuring the safety of the horses and riders. He passed away in 1999. The Pennsylvania Nursery(formerly The Pennsylvania Futurity)

The Pennsylvania Futurity was first run in 1976 in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association to improve the quality and quantity of foals born yearly in Pennsylvania. It was the first race ever written exclusively for Pennsylvania-breds and has been run at the distance of 7 furlongs since its inception. All Pennsylvania-bred foals must be registered with the PHBA before their yearling year in order to be eligible for the Pennsylvania-bred Owner Bonus Program, which pays the owners of PA-breds an additional 40% when their horse runs 1st, 2nd, or 3rd against “open” company. Each year’s crop of two year-olds are nominated through a series of payments beginning on April, in order to remain after eligible in the Pennsylvania Futurity in the fall of the same year. These nomination fees are added to the purse of $50,000 for the Futurity, which is open only to two-year-old colts and geldings. The Blue Mountain Futurity, the “sister” futurity to this race for 2 year-old fillies, is held at Penn National Race Course.

The Lyman Sprint ChampionshipThe Lyman Sprint Championship has become the showcase for Pennsylvania-bred sprinters since its inception in 1982. Originally named the Pennsylvania Sprint Championship, it was renamed in honor of Charles Lyman, Sr. who passed away in 1999. The Lyman family has had a very long association with thoroughbred racing in Pennsylvania. General Charles Lyman Sr. started Maui Meadow Farm in West Chester, which he named after the base where he was stationed in Hawaii during his career in the military. Charles Jr. carried on the family tradition by breeding and racing his homebreds. The operation of Maui Meadow has now passed into the hands of the third generation, Charles III.
