The Fabulous Fifth: The Brewers for the second straight game made their money in the fifth inning, scoring four runs with a 2-0 lead to extend the advantage to 6-0. Helena had three hits in the frame, all resulting in RBI (Jean Carmona, Chad McClanahan, & LG Castillo). Castillo contributed to the first two runs with a first inning two RBI single, and Carmona capped off the scoring in the seventh with a solo home run, his second of the year. Max Lazar earned his first professional win with 5.1 innings of one run baseball. Lazar has only allowed one run in 11.1 innings in 2018.
Tonight’s Matchup: Justin Bullock looks to return to form in his second start after lasting just two innings in his season debut. The 2017 16th Round selection allowed four runs on five hits in the first game of Sunday’s double header against Great Falls. Billings righty Jared Solomon makes his second start of 2018 after allowing two runs over four innings against Missoula last Friday.
Go Away Rain: The Brewers have already been rained out three times in 2018.
Big Bats: The Brewers are averaging 7.3 runs per game, having scored at least seven runs in four of their six games. They are second in the league in home runs (10) behind Grand Junction.
Corredor’s Crew: For the third straight season, Helena’s Brew Crew will be led by Nestor Corredor. A former Brewers farmhand, Corredor played for Helena as a catcher in 2004, and then returned as a pitcher in 2008. Rolando Valles returns as the team’s pitching coach, a role he served last year and in the 2014-2015 seasons. Liu Rodriguez returns for his third consecutive season as the club’s hitting coach. Former Milwaukee Brewer reliever Jim Henderson makes his professional coaching debut as Helena’s bullpen coach.
Who’s Back: Four players that spent their entire 2017 seasons in Helena return to start 2018. Infielders Chad McClanahan & Antonio Pinero are the lone position players returning, while two bullpen arms, Brandon Presley & Roberto Delgado, return to captain Helena’s bullpen. McClanahan is a 2016 11th round draft selection who is expected to be Helena’s primary first baseman. Pinero will man the shortstop position, but will abandon switch hitting and hit exclusively right handed.
Brewer Prospecting: Two players on Helena’s current roster are currently ranked in MLB Pipeline’s top 30 Brewers prospects. Infielder Jean Carmona is ranked 15th, while outfielder Je’Von Ward is ranked 26th. Ward, a former USC commit, is the nephew of former NFL safety Mark Carrier, who also played at USC.
The Draft Dealings: At the time of the publication of these notes, four players from the 2018 draft are on Helena’s roster. They include pitchers Aaron Ashby, J.T. Hintzen, Scott Sunitsch, Clayton Andrews, & Brady Schanuel, along with catcher David Fry. Ashby a 4th round selection out of Crowder College, is the earliest drafted player of the group.
Battling With Billings: Billings opens the 2018 season with 12 players who were selected in the 2018 MLB Draft. They are headlined by 3rd round selection Bren Spillane, who this past season at the University of Illinois hit .389 with 23 home runs and 60 RBI, all categories best in the Big Ten conference. They do not have any Top 30 Reds prospects according to MLB Pipeline. The Mustangs are once again led by Ray Martinez, who is back in Billings for the third straight season.
