FUN FACT I• Dating back to his time as an assistant coach from 2010-14, Head Coach Terry Sims has lost just one Florida Blue Florida Classic with the Wildcats – that coming in his fi rst year as an assistant in 2010.

MEAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK(Nov. 12-18, 2018)

• OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Juwan Carter (Norfolk State – QB)

• DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Davanta Reynolds (North Carolina Central – DB)

• CO-OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK Josh Miles (Morgan State)

• CO-OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK Micah Shaw (North Carolina A&T)

• SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK Jimmie Robinson (Bethune-Cookman – WR)

• ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Xavier Smith (Florida A&M – WR)

Last Time Out for the Cats — Another year, another instant classic from North Carolina Central and Bethune-Cookman. For the third time in four years – and the second time with a blocked fi eld goal – the Wildcats downed the Eagles on the fi nal play, this time an Ulmer Manzie blocked fi eld goal that preserved a 28-25 double overtime victory at Daytona Stadium. Jimmie Robinson provided the early highlights, Keavon Mitchell came up big again with a game-tying touchdown catch with 53 seconds remaining, Uriel Hernandez delivered two overtime fi eld goals and then Ulmer Manzie’s block . Hernandez sent the game into a second overtime with a 39-yard fi eld goal, then gave the Wildcats (6-5, 4-2) the lead with a 21-yarder. North Carolina Central actually had two chances to tie the game after a time out cancelled a fi rst blocked fi eld goal attempt, but Peters’ preserved the fi rst Bethune-Cookman overtime victory since a 63-61 four-overtime victory over Norfolk State in 2005. The Wildcats tied the game at 22-22 with 53 seconds remaining after David Israel manufactured a 73-yard drive that culminated in a 19-yard touchdown to Mitchell, who caught a Hail Mary pass on the fi nal play of Bethune-Cookman’s 13-10 victory last year. Isaiah Totten rushed for 190 yards and two touchdowns for North Carolina Central, who led 16-2 early in the second period, but the Wildcats kept in the game thanks to Robinson and his ability to break the big play. He brought the Wildcats back to 16-15 with a 100-yard kickoff return and a 56-yard third quarter run. Earlier, he scored Bethune-Cookman’s fi rst two points when he returned a blocked NCCU point after attempt. With 5:25 remaining, the Eagles capitalized on a BCU fumble to take a 22-15 lead on Naiil Ramadan’s 15-yard run four plays later. Israel connected with Mitchell on four passes for 41 yards on the drive, which also saw 18-yarder to Malique Jackson and Robinson and a 17-yarder to Steffon Francois. Robinson fi nished with 278 all-purpose yards – 92 rushing, 18 receiving and 182 yards on returns. Mitchell had six catches for 67, Francois fi ve for 70. Israel fi nished 12 of 17 for 162 yards. The Wildcat defense, which contained the Eagles to 150 yards in the second half and overtime and kept the visitors from converting their fi nal six third downs, got 14 tackles each from Marquis Hendrix and Devin James.

Page 3: 2018 BETHUNE-COOKMAN FOOTBALL GAME NOTES · Since the Florida Classic contest moved to Orlando in 1997, Bethune-Cookman holds an 11-10 record against Florida A&M. 5. Bethune-Cookman

A Win Over Florida A&M Would —• Be the 500th win all-time in school history...• Give the Wildcats an unprecedented eighth consecutive win over the Rattlers...• Keep Bethune-Cookman’s chances of an MEAC title share alive (depending on the NCCU vs. A&T game)...• Push Head Coach Terry Sims record to 4-0 all-time as a colelgiate head coach against FAMU...

Series Notes...• Florida A&M leads the all-time series by a count of 49-22-1...• Bethune-Cookman has won the last seven consecutive meetings in the series – the fi rst time it has ever been

accomplished by the Wildcats...• The average margin of victory for the Wildcats over the last fi ve contests against the Rattlers has been 11.4

points, including come-from-behind wins in 2014 and 2017, respectfully.

Out For The Season —• Sophomore running back Que’shaun Byrd, sophomore cornerback Sam Marc, offensive lineman Magyla Ramirez

and quarterback Akevious Williams have each been ruled out the rest of the season with injuries.• Byrd sustained his injury in the second quarter of the game against Howard in Indianapolis; Marc’s injury came

in the second quarter at South Carolina State in Orangeburg; Ramirez’s injury came at Savannah State; and Williams’ injury was sustained as he was crossing the goal line against North Carolina A&T.

Hello, Mr. Robinson —• For the third time this season, return specialst, wide receiver and running back Jimmie Robinson returned a

kickoff for touchdown in BCU’s last contest against North Carolina Central. For the Palm Coast, Florida native, the 100-yard kickoff return for touchdown matched Alvin Wyatt, Sr. (1969) for the longest in school history...

We’re Not Buying That —• For the fi rst time in more than a 20 seasons, Bethune-Cookman will NOT have a traditional bye week, with BCU

instead accepting the game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers of the Big Ten on October 27 in Lincoln.• During Terry Sims’ fi rst season at the helm in Daytona Beach, BCU went the fi rst 10 games of the year

consecutively with a contest, before having a bye week prior to the Florida Blue Florida Classic against Florida A&M in the season fi nale.

Still A Chance For The Title —• Bethune-Cookman still has a chance at a share of the MEAC title, depending on the outcome of the NCCU and

N.C. A&T contest in Durham...• If the Aggies lose and Florida A&M loses to Bethune-Cookman, coupled with wins by South Carolina State in its

fi nal two games, the Aggies would be declared co-champions with FAMU, BCU and S.C. State at 5-2...• If the Aggies lose, Florida A&M loses to Bethune-Cookman and S.C. State drops one of its fi nal two games, the

Aggies would be declared co-champions with FAMU and B-CU at 5-2...

A Road To Remember —• For the eighth consecutive season, Bethune-Cookman opened the year on the road, so to speak. Two times

(2011, ‘12), the Cats opened up in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Walt Disney World in nearby Orlando.

• This is the third time during the span that BCU stepped out of the state of Florida for a season opener. BCU played at Tennessee State (2013) and North Texas (2016) in the stretch.

• Technically, BCU opened up the 2016 campaign in Denton, Texas while the “original” season opener was canceled due to weather as part of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge that was held at Municipal Stadium and presented by ESPN.

#OneDestruction —• The hashtag and theme for Bethune-Cookman Athletics across the 2018-19 athletic term is #OneDestruction.• A destruction, in essence, is a group of wild cats together. With Bethune-Cookman being the Wildcats, it seemed only natural that BCU become ONE DESTRUCTION to prey on the opposition.

ESPN+ And The Wildcats —• It was announced two weeks ago that Bethune-Cookman and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has

partnered together to produce four (4) home games at Daytona Stadium for the Wildcats.• Bethune-Cookman is one of several schools around the league that are introducing ESPN+ as a platform to

watch their contests.• For a complete list of games around the MEAC, visit MEACsports.com.

Cats Land Five On Preseason All-Conference Squad —• Bethune-Cookman had a total of fi ve student-athletes named to the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference

(MEAC) Preseason Team, announced Friday, July 27, at the MEAC Football Kickoff Luncheon in Norfolk, Virginia.

• Leading the preseason team members for BCU was senior OL Dwayne Brown. The only returning starter along the offensive line for Head Coach Terry Sims and the second place team from a season ago, Brown was selected to the First Team on offense.

• Joining Brown on the All-MEAC Preseason First Team for the special teams unit was senior K Uriel Hernandez. A season ago, Hernandez led the Wildcats in scoring with 60 points, connecting on 12-of-18 fi eld goals, in addition to 24-of-26 point-after attempts.

• Redshirt senior DE Todney Evans was named to the preseason second team on defense.• On the third team for offense was RB Tupac Isme, while redshirt senior DL Kevin Thompson landed on the

third team defensive unit.

Block Party...• The Bethune-Cookman special teams has amassed six blocked kicks on the season. Of the blocked kicks, middle

linebacker Devin James has accounted for two of those kicks, while Tydarius Peters has accounted for another two of those kicks.

• Tight end Ulmer Manzie had a game-saving blocked kick against North Carolina Central on “Senior Appreciation Night” – the second time in the last four years BCU has blocked a potential game-winning kick against NCCU.

Instant Replay —• The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has expanded its pilot program aiming at enhancing the game for

all of its member institutions with instant replay at all conference football games in 2018. There are a number of schools beginning the program with their fi rst home game, while the complete instant replay monitoring system will go into effect midway at the beginning of the 2019 season.

• The MEAC already has instant replay and monitors for all women’s and men’s basketball games throughout the league, with that rule going into effect fulltime in 2016-17.

Transitioning From The Hardwood —• Redshirt junior Ulmer Manzie will be transitioning from the hardwood under Men’s Basketball Head Coach Ryan

Ridder, taking the “Jimmy Graham” approach and playing tight end for Head Coach Terry Sims and the football team.

• Manzie has not played football since high school where he attended Columbus Africentric High in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

• Manzie will be the fi rst two-sport athlete for the Wildcats aside from track & fi eld since redshirt junior quarterback Akevious Williams played baseball for the Maroon and Gold in 2015.

Six Quarters Equals A Back —• It’s been a staple of the Bethune-Cookman Football program to use a multiple quarterback system since the

conclusion of the 2010 campaign. That will be no different in 2018 under Head Coach Terry Sims and Offensive

Freelance and/or non-daily writers may be asked to produce copies of actual publications in which their work has appeared. In some cases, these materials will be required as verifi cation of the writers’ status.

MEDIA INFORMATIONCOVERING THE WILDCATS

Interview requests for student-athletes and/or coaches before or after practice must be submitted by Noon the previous day. Media members wishing to write feature stories should submit feature story requests to Bryan J. Harvey ([email protected]) by 3 p.m. Sunday.

Harvey and the Bethune-Cookman Communications Staff will make every effort to schedule a separate time to accommodate those requests. Because of time constraints and academic/meeting obligations, media members may only request two (2) student-athletes and/or assistant coaches for interviews following practice(s).

MEAC TELECONFERENCEBethune-Cookman head coach Terry Sims and the league’s

other 10 coaches will be featured on a weekly teleconference each Tuesday during the 2018 football season from 10 a.m. to 11:43 a.m., beginning Aug. 27, and concluding Nov. 29.

Each coach will have 10 minutes to make an opening statement and answer questions. There will be an audio fi le available of each teleconference on the Conference’s offi cial website (MEACsports.com) each Wednesday afternoon.

Sims’ scheduled time is 10:23 a.m. to 10:33 a.m. ET each Tuesday. Media representatives wishing to participate in the teleconference should contact the MEAC Media Relations Offi ce.

SCHEDULE OF COACHES:10 a.m. MEAC Notes10:13 a.m. Willie Simmons (Florida A&M)10:23 a.m. Terry Sims (Bethune-Cookman)10:33 a.m. Rod Milstead (Delaware State)10:43 a.m. Mike London (Howard)10:53 a.m. Latrell Scott (Norfolk State)11:03 a.m. Erik Raeburn (Savannah State)11:13 a.m. Buddy Pough (South Carolina State)11:23 a.m. Sam Washington (North Carolina A&T)11:33 a.m. Granville Eastman (North Carolina Central)11:43 a.m. Ernest T. Jones (Morgan State)

Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach Allen Suber.• The Wildcats not only return Akevious Williams (R-Jr.) and Jabari Dunham under center (R-Sr.), but they welcome

West Virginia transfer David Israel (R-Soph.), Terry Gilliam (Fr.), Kyle Smith (Fr.) and Devin Black (Fr.).

Playoffs? —• Despite the introduction of the Celebration Bowl in February 2015, a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic

Conference (MEAC) still has the possibility of participating in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Playoffs. A member would have to accept an at-large bid to the playoffs, which last happened with North Carolina A&T accepting the at-large bid in 2016.

Next Up —• Depending on the outcome of the North Carolina A&T vs. North Carolina Central game, Bethune-Cookman could

grab a share of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) title. However, there is no scenario that would allow the Cats a shot at the Celebration Bowl.

Sims City —• With nine (9) wins during his inaugural season at the helm of the Bethune-Cookman football program, head coach

Terry Sims matched former head coach Wesley Moore with the second-most wins in a fi rst season as head coach of the Maroon and Gold.

• Only head coaches Rudolph “Bunky” Matthews (1947) and Brian Jenkins (2010) had more wins, with each collecting 10 during their debut campaign. However, both of those seasons contained 12-game slates, as opposed to just 11 for Sims and Moore, respectfully.

Last Year —• The 2017 Bethune-Cookman Football campaign saw a multitude of highs for the Wildcats. The Maroon and Gold

opened its season with the fi rst four (4) games on the road, including being displaced for four days in Louisiana as Hurricane Irma hit the Volusia County area with BCU on the road to Southeast Louisiana.

• Despite dropping a tough decision at No. 11 North Carolina A&T, the Maroon and Gold was the ONLY team to lead the undefeated Aggies in the fourth quarter.

• Bethune-Cookman capped its 2017 campaign with an unprecedented seventh consecutive win over MEAC and in-state rival Florida A&M in a come-from-behind thriller as part of the Florida Blue Florida Classic at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

What’s In A Number? —• A handful of Bethune-Cookman players changed numbers prior to the season. They include: » Keavon Mitchell from 6 to 1 » Jerry Beauchamp from 76 to 49 » Tyre Curry from 52 to 30 » Trevor Gear from 20 to 32 » Kris Holt from 99 to 77 » Cedric Jackson from 65 to 76 » Davonte Lawrence from 44 to 26 » Robert McKinzie from 45 to 52 » Trevor Merritt from 35 to 20

30 Sacks, 30 Turnovers —• The goal at the start of the season is for the Wildcats defense to make 30 sacks and force 30 turnovers. That

would be a signifi cant production hike from the two previous years of the current coaching regime that resulted

Still, the Rattlers (5-1, 6-4) remain sole possession of fi rst place, one-half game ahead of defending champ North Carolina A&T (4-1, 7-2).

Magic Number Is Still One• FAMU at 5-1, is a half game ahead of North Carolina A&T (5-1), and two games ahead of Howard University (4-3). The loss against Howard puts even greater importance on this year’s Florida Blue Florida Classic against archrival Bethune-Cookman, essentially making that clash a MEAC Championship Game.

FAMU Now Number Four in FCS Attendance• This week, FAMU checks in at #4 in NCAA FCS Total Home Attendance, with 94,631 through fi ve (5) home games, trailing Montana, which has drawn 121,556 through fi ve (5) games; North Dakota State (#2 at 111,380), and Jackson (Miss.) State (#3 at 99,079).

TERRY SIMSHead Coach, Fourth SeasonKnoxville, 1994

In just three seasons as the head ball coach of Bethune-Cookman University, Terry Sims has experienced very few things that his predecessors endured before him. Now entering his ninth year overall at the Daytona Beach based institution, it will be his fourth year at the helm of the Wildcats program.

In 2017, the Wildcats completed a “resurge” by winning their last four and six of their fi nal seven games. BCU fi nished 6-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, and was just a combined six points away in two road setbacks from an undefeated conference record. The ‘Cats defeated rival Florida A&M for the seventh consecutive season, remained undefeated at North Carolina Central with a SportsCenter Top 10 win, and became the fi rst MEAC program to win on the road against a Southland Conference opponent with a Sept. 11 victory at Southeastern Louisiana. The Wildcats put together a perfect 4-0 mark at home with victories over Savannah State, South Carolina State, Hampton, and Morgan State.

BCU saw eight different Wildcats earn postseason All-MEAC honors including three First Team spots with safety Diquan Richardson, offensive lineman Dwayne Brown, and placekicker Uriel Hernandez.

Following the season, wide receiver Jawill Davis signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants, while quarterback Larry Brihm and offensive lineman Phillip Norman signed with Calgary and British Columbia, respectively, of the Canadian Football League.

The Wildcats also performed well in the classroom as tight end Demetrius Weaver was one of two MEAC student-athletes to receive the 2018 Nike Post-Graduate Scholarship

His sophomore season of 2016 saw the Jesup, Georgia native face diffi culties that not even he could imagine. Injuries plagued the Wildcats, while weather forced three games to either be delayed signifi cantly, cancelled or moved to another date altogether. Sims saw a total of 16 starters out of the rotation – all through the fi rst fi ve games of the campaign

Despite all of those setbacks, the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman were able to bounce back to win four consecutive games down the stretch, including the Florida Blue Florida Classic contest in Orlando at newly-renovated Camping World Stadium. The win over rival Florida A&M was the sixth of its kind consecutively. BCU concluded the season with a 4-6 overall mark, but collected three of those wins away from Municipal Stadium for a 2-3 overall mark on the year – with one loss coming at FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) opponent North Texas.

Following the campaign, junior safety Diquan Richardson would be named to the All-MEAC First Team on the defensive side of the ball under the guise of Sims, while Kevin Thompson would be selected to the third team on defense. Frank Brown would be named to the second team on offense. And it was running back Jamaruz Thompkins on the third team for offense, rounding out four total Maroon and Gold student-athletes named to the postseason all-conference team.

In the winter of 2017, Sims and his staff signed one of the best classes in school history, including a number of star-ranked performers by various recruiting outlets nationally.

During his rookie season as a head coach in 2015, Sims continued the positive success enjoyed by Bethune-Cookman with the school’s fourth consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) title. He led the Wildcats to a 9-2 record in his fi rst season and a 7-1 mark, including a share of the MEAC title.

While 2015 marked his fi rst year as head coach of the Wildcats, it was his sixth season overall with the program.

Under his guise in 2015, Sims was named MEAC Coach of the Year after matching South Carolina State (1980-83) for the second-longest streak in MEAC history with the run of four MEAC crowns on the spin.

The Wildcats were victorious over in-state rival Florida A&M, 35-14 in Sims’ debut at the helm in the annual Florida Blue Florida Classic, securing their stake in the conference title. BCU led the MEAC in several statistical categories, including scoring offense (31.4 avg/g), total offense (445.0 avg/g), rushing offense (191.8 yds/g), pass offense (253.2 avg/g), and pass effi ciency (164.1 effi ciency). The Wildcats also held top 10 positions statistically in the FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) in passing yards per completion (6th) and team passing effi ciency (3rd). BCU entered the STATS FCS Top 25 poll in the fi nal ranking of the season (25th), slowly climbing the FCS Coaches Poll to reach 21st nationally following the last game of the regular season against FAMU.

Sims had a total of 10 student-athletes named to the All-MEAC fi rst-, second- and third team, respectfully. The list included quarterback Quentin Williams, receiver Jawill Davis, offensive lineman Dariusz Bladek, linebacker Robert Way and defensive back Marquis Drayton – all named fi rst team selections.

In his fi ve years prior to accepting the head coaching position with BCU, Sims served as assistant head coach. He oversaw a variety of the day-to-day duties of the BCU program, as well as working ext5ensively with the safeties, and serving as special teams coordinator. He helped to coach a number of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) all-league performers, in addition to 2013 All-America safety Nick Addison.

In 2014, BCU once again captured no less than a share of the school’s seventh MEAC crown all-time, as well as the fourth title in the last fi ve seasons. The defensive unit fi nished atop the FCS for total defense and rush defense. The Cats allowed just 237.5 yards per game to their opposition, while also allowing just 79.9 yards per game on the ground. The team would go on to fi nish second in the FCS for fi rst downs defense, and seventh nationally in passing yards allowed (157.6 p/g).

During the 2013 campaign, safety Nick Addison would fi nish second in the league for interceptions, while going on to receive First Team Associated Press All-America honors following the year. He also collected First Team All-MEAC accolades.

Before arriving in Daytona Beach, Sims spent four seasons serving as recruiting coordinator, special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach at Howard University. Prior to that, Sims coached cornerbacks at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for two seasons, working to improve passing coverage, and aiding the Ragin’ Cajuns in attaining top-25 national pass defense rankings.

Sims previously served in the secondary at Prairie View A&M. While working with the Panthers, Sims coached the defensive backs, in addition to kick returners. He was also in charge of breaking down fi lm and preparing opponent scouting reports. Additionally, he was active in the planning of recruiting weekends, organizing on-and-off campus recruiting, while serving the role of academic and compliance liaison.

Prior to joining the PVAMU staff in 2004, Sims was the defensive backs coach at Texas Southern University in Houston.

During his four-year term with the Tigers, Sims coached some of the top defensive backs in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, including Santino Hall, who fi nished the 2001 season leading the conference in pass breakups with 20, and Oliver Celestin, who led TSU in interceptions and broke the school record for yards on an interception return. Both players went on to play professionally (Celestine: NY Jets, Hall: Saskatchewan Roughriders).

Before coaching at TSU, Sims worked with the running backs at Austin Peay for three seasons. He produced the 1997 Offensive MVP, Chris Black, and DeAunta McAffee, who tied the school touchdown record.

Sims began his coaching career as a student assistant in 1994, working with the linebackers at his alma mater, Knoxville College. His next stop was at the University of Louisville, where he assisted the defensive backs as a graduate assistant in 1995 and had the opportunity to work with Sam Madison, who set the school record for interceptions (16) and passes defended (44), going on to be a four-time Pro Bowl selection with the Miami Dolphins and tie the NFL interception record (21).

Sims is a 1994 graduate of Knoxville College, where he was a team captain as a defensive back on the gridiron, while also patrolling center fi eld in baseball. He would go on to earn his Master’s Degree from Louisville in 1997. Sims is married to Joyce. The couple has two children: daughter Sierra (a freshman softball student-athlete at Bowie State University), and son Xavier.
