CENTERPIECE

THE BLOOM OF YESTERDAYDIE BLUMEN VON GESTERN

Sat. Feb. 10, 2018 6:30 p.m.Castro Theatre, San FranciscoSan Francisco PremiereIn Person: Lars Eidinger

123 min. Germany (2016). DCP.German w/ English subtitles.

Director/Screenwriter: Chris KrausStarring: Lars Eidinger, Adèle Haenel, Jan Josef Liefers, Hannah HerzsprungCinematography: Sonja RomProducers: Danny Krausz, Kathrin Lemme,Chris Kraus, Gerd Huber, Kurt StockerWorld Sales: Beta Cinema

Presented with the support of:

Grand Prix and Viewer's Choice Awardwinner at the Tokyo International FilmFestival and winner of the Guild of GermanArt House Cinemas Award.

Toto (Lars Eidinger, Personal Shopper,Clouds of Sils Maria) is an esteemedHolocaust scholar. He is also the grand-son of a Nazi war criminal. While organ-izing a conference, Toto takes on an internnamed Zazie (Adèle Haenel, BPM (BeatsPer Minute), The Unknown Girl), who’s thegranddaughter of a Holocaust victim. Aftera rocky meet-cute, the two bond, speakcandidly about their familial legacies, andstumble toward romance. Which may ormay not be a problem for the married—yet ostensibly impotent—Toto. The latestfilm from Chris Kraus, (The Poll Diaires,4 Minutes) the audacious The Bloom of Yes-terday wrings comedy from unfathomableatrocity. Yet the film’s lightness allows itsinherent gravity to settle fully once we ap-prehend its true message: that every gen-eration must find its own path to reckoningwith the daunting shadows of history.– Miami International Film Festival

Swiss filmmaker Alain Gsponer (Heidi, Rose)helms this new cinematic vision based onAustro-Hungarian-born writer Ödön vonHorváth’s enduringly popular, 1938 dark fableabout guilt, fate, and the individual con-science – “Jugend ohne Gott” (also releasedas “The Age of the Fish”).

In a dystopian, performance-oriented society, adolescents struggle for good grades whiletheir dreams are shattered by an indifferentsystem. In a not-to-distant future, in whichintegration serves to protect the elite andisolate the weak, the cities are hellholesand the countryside holds the fairytale prom-ise of a better life, a young school girl isfound in the woods during the annual grad-uates' assessment camp. Known for hisupstanding morals, a teacher breaks withhis own values on a quest for the truth –and is increasing entangled in a net of hisown lies. Suddenly someone confesses toa murder that they couldn‘t have commit-ted, and the fragile cohesion of a youthfulelite society is threatened to destroy itself.

Official Selection (In Competition) at the2017 Berlin International Film Festival.

An intimate look at a visionary artist, seenthrough a congenial montage of archivalsources he appeares more relevant thanever before. Joseph Beuys, the man witha hat, the felt, and the “fat corner”. Thirtyyears after his death he still seems to bea visionary, way ahead of his time. Backthen he was trying to patiently explain how“money shouldn't be a commodity.” Heknew that money trade would underminedemocracy. But there is more. Beuys boxes, parleys, lectures and explains pictures toa dead hare. He asks with a grin: “Do YouWant a Revolution Without Laughter?“ Hisexpanded concept of art leads him smackin the middle of socially relevant discourse, even today. A congenial montage of count-less, previously untapped visual and audiosources, director Andreas Veiel and histeam created a one-of-a-kind chronicle:Beuys is not a portrait in the common sensebut an intimate look at a human being, hisart and his world of ideas.
