PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Huff Saved His Bacon
She’s a treasured part of SALSP history and one of its earliest members, hailing from Hartville, Missouri.
I’m talking, of course, about Marilyn Huffman.
Huff’s father, MJ, was a colorful and legendary political leader in Wright County. Huff says that he was the most influential person in her life. She adored him. So when MJ told his daughter that the practice of law was “no place for women,” Huff complied, switching gears slightly to pursue a teaching career. Time went by, and when her little brother Phil (who would grow up to be a lawyer, a lover of college basketball, and also my friend) enrolled in Law School at Mizzou, MJ told Huff that “times had changed” and that he had changed his mind and was willing to pay for her to attend Law School. Alas, Huff had moved on with her life and no longer had the burning desire to pursue a law degree. By then she was working as a Secretary at the Neale Newman Law Firm in Springfield, doing work for Jean Paul Bradshaw and his son, Paul Bradshaw. When Paul became a State Senator, Huff acted as his political confidant and right hand. If you wanted to deliver a concern to Senator Bradshaw, the road went through Huff. Huff was wicked-smart and politically astute. She still is. She has been active in Republican politics in Greene County, and served as President of the Greene County Young Republicans and as a National Young Republican Committee Woman. She avidly follows and loves and lives the political life. Following Senator Bradshaw’s death, she became the Manager of the newly opened Republic License Office, only to be promptly relieved when a Democrat Governor was elected. She then worked for Judges Shrum and Scott at the Court of Appeals and in the Greene County Circuit Clerk’s office for Mike Carr. Jerry Redfern recalls how Huff, though having no children of her own, would entertain the children of the Neale Newman attorneys at Christmas, with their very ‘own’ Christmas dinner. Each attorney and their children would individually be feted at Marilyn’s
To be successful in the practice of law, a lawyer needs a solid support team. An important component of such a team is legal training and education, even for the non-lawyer members of that team. Simply learning on the job is not an adequate or efficient means of growing competent team members. The support team at my office are all proud and engaged members of SALSP, the Springfield Area Legal Support Professionals. Since SALSP is the premier (and only) organization addressing the issue of legal education for my support team, and this year marks their 60th year in operation, I’ve decided this article should feature a prominent SALSP member. She’s a treasured part of SALSP history and one of its earliest members, hailing from Hartville, Missouri. I’m talking, of course, about Marilyn Huffman. Marilyn’s nickname is “Huff.” When she was a little girl, her father, “MJ” Huffman, was the Prosecuting Attorney of Wright County. In Wright County, in the days before 911 service, victims of adult abuse would often go directly to the house of the Prosecuting Attorney and pound on his door in the middle of the night, instead of going to the Police Department or Sheriff ’s Office. Little Huff’s bedroom was next to the front door, and whenever a woman in trouble, often bloody and beaten, came looking for the Prosecuting Attorney, Little Huff would be the first to answer. This made a lasting impression on her. Huff attended SMS and graduated with a degree in Political Science and Music. She worked through college, singing at funerals and weddings all over Missouri, though she made it a point to never sing the famous George Beverly Shea song “How Great Thou Art”. You should ask her about that. Back when Huff went to college, graduating with a degree in Political Science was essentially a one-way ticket to law school and she dearly wanted to do just that. Unfortunately, when she broached the law school question to her father, his answer was a firm “no”. continued on page 23...

8 : BAR NEWS
In June, Stage 4 of the tour began at the Springfield Municipal Courthouse on North Benton and Chestnut Expressway. New members saw first-hand how the Court serves our community and saw how people charged with violating Springfield’s Code of Ordinances have their cases heard in this division of the 31st Judicial Circuit. Matters range from traffic violations, and shoplifting to probation hearings and DWIs, and matters before the court encompass a variety of other city ordinance violations. Judge Thornhill invited the new members to sit in on a docket of “in-custodys” as he held hearings remotely for inmates who had been picked up over the weekend for outstanding warrants. New SMBA members got to see the direct impact the Municipal Court has on the lives of Greene County Citizens.
Stage 5, the Pelaton made a much needed pitstop for hotdogs and cold beer. This stage saw a strong turn out as our new members looked to refuel and relax with some of our local Judges and Lawyers. Crista Hogan and Abe McGull hosted new members at their home on Catalpa St. Plenty of SMBA swag was on hand and the hotdog roller was a big hit.
In August, new members joined the SMBA Board for a meeting at the SMBA. SMBA leaders shared their experiences with the Tour de Courts program and spoke about the impact staying active in the bar has had on their careers.
Thank you again to all our area judges, lawyers, and new members for making out 2018 Tour de Courts program a success.

2018 SMBA TOUR DE COURTS Final Stages Recap
Practice Pointers with Judge Todd Thornhill By Chantel Kelly
Chantel Kelly interviewed Judge Thornhill to find out a little more about him and offer a few pointers for practitioners in Springfield Municipal Court.
Q: What are the top three things every lawyer needs to know about practicing in Municipal Court? ?
A: 1. Utilize the attorney phone line (864-1374) to get your case reset to an attorney docket. Please, please do not come here at 9 a.m. for open arraignments. You don’t want to be here then, and we don’t want you here then.
2. Rule 37 and chapter 479 RSMo address municipal courts.
3. Be respectful to ALL court staff.
Q: Before becoming a judge, what is the best piece of advice a lawyer/mentor gave you?
A: If you want your citation of authority to be taken seriously and/or read, utilize pinpoint citations.
Q: Beyond the Bench: what are some of your hobbies and interests, and what do you do in your spare time?
A: Lunch hour is usually taken up with basketball or weightlifting at the downtown YMCA, and golf is the other addiction/hobby. Netflix (Ozark, Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Girlfriends Guide to Divorce, Peaky Blinders, Rectify, Making a Murderer, etc.) has become the latest spare time filler, especially during the winter months. Now that the dog died, less spare time is spent on cleaning, but we do miss her dearly.

The SMBA Tour de Courts program was one of four recipients of this year’s E. Smythe Gambrell Professionalism Award, presented by the ABA Standing Committee on Professionalism.
The selecting Tour de Courts for recognition, the awards committee stated: “Tour de Court offers a practical and thoughtful approach to introducing new lawyers to the local judicial system, the legal community and the profession, while providing them with an opportunity to interact with judges, bar leaders, court personnel and their colleagues early in their careers and establishing a strong foundation in the formation of their professional identity.”

TOUR DE COURTS WINS NATIONAL AWARD
The E. Smythe Gambrell Awards are the leading national awards recognizing programs and projects contributing to the understanding and advancement of professionalism among lawyers. The annual awards aspire to recognize excellent programs and go further to promote initiatives that are worthy of imitation by other organizations. Jayne Reardon, Chair of the ABA Committee on Professionalism said:
“The Committee was impressed by the ease with which Tour de Courts can be replicated to serve as a model for other bar associations seeking to provide new lawyers with opportunities to foster mentorships that offer exceptional professional development resources and role models. The Standing Committee on Professionalism commends the Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association for establishing an innovative and effective program well worthy of emulation throughout the nation.”
The formal announcement and presentation of the award took place in conjunction with the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago at a luncheon on Friday, August 3, 2018. The award certificate was accompanied by a cash prize of $3,500.
WELCOME TO THE BARIf there are new members of the bar not listed, please email [email protected] so that we can extend an invitation to participate in Tour de Courts and other SMBA activities.
10 : BAR NEWS
I originally intended to write this article after my first week. I thought that after experiencing law school for five days, I would be able to adequately assess how I was feeling. However, one week passed, and I was far too overwhelmed to form any sort of coherent evaluation. Now, three weeks later, I feel much better positioned to report back on my experience so far. This month has mainly served to teach me how much I don’t know than exposing me to the law itself. Prior to coming to law school, someone told me that, “There’s nothing worse than a 1L who thinks they know it all.” After a month, I could not agree more. As to all the 1L students currently projecting extreme confidence, I admire their acting skills, but I don’t believe them. Right now, the law seems like such a messy web of interconnected judicial rulings, statutes, and administrative regulations rife with gray areas. At the moment, it is difficult to foresee how I will navigate through the quagmire to provide sound legal advice to future clients. Hopefully, at the end of three years, I will have learned how to do this through repeated practice and more exposure to the law. My day-to-day experiences have been extremely positive. I have already met several close friends and I have really enjoyed exploring Columbia with them. Since I went to high school in Nixa and then went to undergraduate at Missouri State, I am used to attending school with students of a very similar background to myself. I love being in a place where the students are not only from Missouri, but all around the country as well. This not only fosters good classroom debate, but also forces us to defend our own assumptions to those that did not grow up with the same mindset as those from rural or suburban Missouri. There is a good attitude in place at Mizzou, in that one perspective is not automatically rejected in favor of another.
Likewise, I have really enjoyed my professors. One of the reasons (besides proximity to Springfield) that I chose Mizzou was the strength of its faculty. So far, I have not been disappointed. They seem to care individually about each student in a way that was impossible in my undergraduate studies due to sheer numbers. I know that much has been made of declining law school enrollment in the last few years, but for the students who actually attend law school, smaller class sizes are a great benefit. For example, my Contracts professor is able to take four students out to lunch every Wednesday. This level of one-on-one mentorship has been above and beyond my expectations. One surprising thing I have noticed is the structural similarity of law school to high school. I definitely did not think I would have this thought, but I am continually struck by the parallels. For one thing, I travel to all of my classes with the same fifty students in the same building. Second, at orientation, we were all assigned a locker and a mailbox. It took me a while to remember how to use a dial combination lock again! However, the coursework remains quite different from my high school experience. One of the best things about this month is that I am continually reassured that I made the right career decision. I am definitely challenged by the coursework, but not buried under the weight of it. It is exciting to learn about things that I had very little knowledge of before. Given how much I currently do not know, it is easy to see how a career in the legal field equates to a commitment of lifetime learning. I look forward to continuing the journey.

home. The Redfern children, David and Greg, would have marshmallows and hot dogs. Jerry and Jeannie would have steak. As time went by, the tables were turned and when David and Greg grew older they would be the ones to take Huff to dinner to celebrate Christmas. “It just wasn’t Christmas without Marilyn.” Also, according to Jerry, “Not only is Marilyn one of the nicest people in the world, she’s also just a little ‘ornery’.” Around 1958, Polly Hunter, Vi Euell and Evelyn Roe and some others established the Springfield Chapter of the National Association of Legal Secretaries (NALS). Huff joined in 1960. Eventually, there was a strong push to distinguish the work of a Secretary from that of a Paralegal, and the local Springfield Chapter became the Springfield Area Legal Support Professionals (SALSP). Over the 60 years of their existence SALSP has fostered continuing legal education and certification for law office personnel. They meet monthly. They have taught law office personnel to understand professionalism. SALSP has become the premier educator for law office staff, encouraging its members to learn, and become invested with legal knowledge. Certification may be acquired in different legal areas of the law. They meet monthly and the SALSP network is invaluable. They are the go-to Legal Assistant organization in Southwest Missouri. There is even an annual “Bosses Night” which, if you are lucky and your SALSP member likes you, you might be invited to attend. Tom Millington was the most recent Boss of the Year. For information on how your staff can become members of SALSP, contact Lori Muetzel, President, or Kelly Angle-Markley, Membership Chair, at 417-869-9999. Attorney Joe Bohrer said it best: “When I practiced, Marilyn many times came to my office and very pleasantly inquired if I really meant to say what I had just written? Of course, she was always right. Marilyn Huffman saved my bacon many times!” Do yourself a favor! Get your staff involved with SALSP so that you, too, can have a Huff in your office to save your bacon!
