    IMPOUTANT RAILWAY EXTENSION

It will bo in the recollection of our j -cadcrs that ,nt a ppecial meeting of the shareholders of theLimerick Railway, held nt their offices in thiscity, on the 2nd of April inst., a resolution wasunanimously adopted, empowering that companytosubscriboa aum .uotoxcccding £'50,000, towardsa proposed extension of th« lino now conatructing between Clonmel and'l'burlcs , to Cashc]and mining districts in the neighbourhood , andfor this object it is necessary tho Southern (ornew) Company, should obtain the sanction ofParliamen t in the present session. With a viewto this end , a Bill is now beforo tho House ofCommons, which , with tile true spirit of mono-poly or obstructiveness, characterising most oftheir proceedings, tho Dublin Board of the GreatSouthern and Wcstorn Kailway havo resolved onopposing, as they believe it would open up o'newand valuable district for the trado of Wnterford ,and interfere with the cross channel traffic, whichthey wish to bring by the port of Dublin , as wellfor the interest of a great English railway com-pany with which they are allied as for their own.We are glad to notice that the district betweeuWatcrford and Cashcl is already nlive to its owninterest, and knoiving the advnntago of bcinrrconnected with this port , have resolved to appearbefore Parliament by petition in favour of thonew railway, and its alliance with the Waterfordand Limerick. On Monday a demonstrationwas made in Cashel , at which tho Town Commiasionors assisted; and on Tuesday, a specialmeeting of the Town Council of Clonrael was heldthe MiroR in tho chair , with a similar object Mr*Kiii.VACiu.v.the very intelli gent and respectablesolicitor of tho company was present, and ex-plained^ sorno length tho legal technicalitiesraised by tho Great Southern arid Western to thoproposed oxtension to Cashel. Ho said that se-veral years ago tho above company obtainod thetransfer of powers conferred by tarliament uponanother ocal line, who wero authorized to makoa somowbat similar line of railway to pass near

to the coal district ; this they did not, however, accomplish ; and. though frequently nrged tofulfil Jthcir former undertaking, did not do sonntil their powers (under tlio Act) expired. Atgome period antecedent to the foregoing, theybad obtained leave to construct a railway to tho.city of Cashel, which had been , as in beforecited case, abandoned.

Tho Watcrford und Limerick being disposedto aid the construction of the line , the SouthernCompany had made working arrangements withthem,,buti tlio Great Southern and Western Com-pany wero opposed in tola to the whole project. They stated they had no ri ght to do so with anyeompany save themselves, nnd in the sp irit ofopposition , objected to having the bill for theconstruction of tho line passed on technicalgrounds, tlie standing orders not having beencomplied with at the required time ; and in casethey succeeded , n delay of twelve months woult]be the result. The Corporation of Clonmel una.nimonsly resolved in faivmr of tlie line; and wearc glad to sec that the Mayor of Wnterfurd hasconvened a special mowing of out- Council, fo,-Monday next " To consider, and, if doomed advis-"able, adopt a petition to Parliament in favour"of tlio Southern Railway (No. 1) Bill fromThur." los to Olonme) , with branches to C'nshtl and the" Slicvanlng h Collieries in connection with tl.c" Watcrford and Limerick Railway Company."This is a most, import ant and essential project, and therefore we are .sure the Corporation (,|Wiitcrfonlj 'will adopt the petition unanimou sl y.The Corporation of Cushel , and other publi cbodies, have likewise passed similar petitions. Atpresent a passenger from Waterford going t .i;Thurles by Railway has to proceed about, i::miles out of his way by the Limerick Junction. The new Railway (the Southern) wi ll cut on"at,the Junction rontr-, and shorten the distanc; In-exactly tlic same number of miles. Well , Cushc-ICiinuuc bo reached at present by Railway, iliunearest approach to it from Waterford beingGoold's Cross, on tho Great iSoiul:ern and Wes-tern linci- The opening up of the great collieriesof Slicvarciagh not onl y to Waterford but to allIreland, will in itsel f be a great national work, especially as coals are now more valuable thanever they were bffore. The Watcrford andLimerick Railway Company are very picporl vbacking thu new project in a liinincial point olview. They will have the workin g of it , and ith expected. to be open for trallic within two years,These are facts which ol thumselvrs art; suiheiemto induce the citizens of the Cr/m tuttictn to ;ti. ]this truly great national undertaking Iiy everymeans in thier power.

    i'JiE WATER DABBLKltS

The cabal about water to the city at, the pre-sent moment , would be hi ghl y amusing, if thesupp ly of the dirtied li quid was not affecting tliohealth of the people. " Water, water, water. ''is an article iu which orators take full liberty toair their speech , and dabble with their hands. When the city was inundated with rain , thatwould change a parched desert into a broadlake, we were wisely told that Waterford wantedno water, aud that the Corporation should staytheir bauds in the project they had maturedafter years of di.scusHOti , and with the best ad-vico to ba got for money, stimulatin g them in anundertaking which is, beyond doubt , indis-pensable, for the health as well as the comfortnnd the cleanliness of the people. Then , whenearly summer hits signified its approach , andliving bodies, as well as putrid matter , arcvisible to the naked eye iu the scant supp ly, theCorporation is now assailed on the other side,as if they possessed Divine power to purif y tlieimpure. The Mayor has been publicly charged ,in n nice little electioneering speech at iliaWorkhouse , with not doing what lie had beenauthorised to do; but tbe fact is , that the Mayorhas shown amazing alacrity in a matter whichwill prove of litt le use except ir adding outlayto what has been alread y a costl y, and as yet, futile expenditure—namel y-, he had , at theearliest moment alter iie was authorised to doso, forwarded to Professor C.\MKHox , water from, dillerent fountains in the city for analysation .And rriuil will );o the rt-.i'iilt of thai inquiry .1Wh y, the same as it ha.i beun beforu —that tliuwater is dirty, if not impure , and that if thehealth of the city is any care to the public guar-dians of its interest , the onl y way to manage isLo throw away the foul water and "ret, clean. We are sorry to see an effort making to inducethe Corporation to re-enter upon the " tinkering"process, which wasted thousands of pounds be-fore the grea:. and only adcqtuue .scheme wastaken up. .Cl.u'OO was the sum estimatedfor the Lisduggan water, but we believe itcost nearer to iJ:'.,'Xii .> , and iu ori ginal plan ofan arched roof is not iu existence. Tfie lit-tle rivulets about this city were visited andrepotted on by the eminent eng ineers who fromtime to time have been broug ht here for tliepurpose--including Il\wKKM.e v , R .UEMAX amij\Ili.:."i:—and they all pronounced them not wurllihalf the money it would cost to bring them in.Then , whero would this water be put • Js il intothose fountains , situate in crowded pans of thecity, receiving the dirty oozings nf tlie surround-ing houses for twenty-three hours per day. anddistributing this accumulation , as at present ,for one hour in tho morning all over the city .1It is unreasonable and nonsensical for individualsto bo attacking the Corpoialion for not doingwhat they are unablo to do, and to be wrong lycharging-other." with neglecting what they hailshown their utmost vigilance , aud anxiety inperforming /orig, perhaps-, bef ore any kno wledgeof the mutter was in the possession of theirccnsor.H. The Mayor, as the head of the Corpo-ration , has been doing all it is possible to do withcontaminated water , and the members of theCorporation , as a body as well as in their indivi-dual capacity, arc just as sensitive about cleanli-ness, if not more so. nnd have as deep an interestin providing pure and health-g iving water , asany of their assailants; and those who wish todabble in water will best KIIOW the sincerity oftheir intentions iu giving a hearty support tothe Corixiration in their efforts to obtain theKnockaderry supp ly—the onl y pure and adequateone within reach—in the shortest possible time,at a fair and reasonable cost, jud ging of its certainndvnntages to thseky at lar.

Proposed by Mr. Clampett ,secouded by Mr. O'Shca, and resolved ,'that tho Veryltov.Dr. I- l yiin , I'.P.V.G , be re-electedVice-Chairnmu.It wan proposed by Aid. Jacob, J.P., seconded by Mr .Clampett , that Dr. G. I. Mackesy bo ru-nppointedlion. Sec. Agreed to. It was resolved that &00posters be printed and posted with names suit resi-dences of tho; members of tho committee. I n con-nection with these proceeding!, a report wasnlso scutup by tbo committee from Dr. Delaudre, M. 0., com-plaining of the pump iu Water-street ns supply ingbad water , anrl , there by, causing disease in tho city.Tho doctor forcibly asked the committeo to bringso vitally important a subject before tho properauthorities as speedily as possible, with u view toan irnmediato remedy.

llr. O'SIIEA taid that in reference to that para-graph ho would move, that tho subject of which ittreated should bu brought to tho serious attentio n oftho corporation , as tbo body having tho supervisionof those matters.

Tho CII .- 'J IMA .-.' sfnted to the board thut this veryimportant mutter wns one which hud been carefullyattended to by the corportion, and 110 Inter than tbolast meeting on Thursday it wna considered by themen-born present. Arising out of that action , IhoMayor had procured samples of tho water from eachof tho reservoirs in town , and told him tbo daybefore that ho hoped to send them up tbat eveninj,'to Dubliu to bo analysed (hear, hear).

Mr. Ct .AMl 'KtT seconded Mr. O'Shin's motion in asomewbat lengthened speech. Iu the course of hiaremarks Mr. CI.AS II 'KTT alluded to tho statementmado by i\ member of tho corporation (Mr. Graves)at 11 lato raccliug, to tho effect that owiug to tbobad water in town his men had to driok beer, midcouli 'iided that people should not bo forced to drinkiitipui 'i water. Althoug h that was not, perhaps , theplncij 10 discuss the question , he would still take theliberty of say ing (hat the corporation wcru acting inenor 'in seeking to obtain i;.'iO,000 or .CIi() ,U()O forwater works in the city. Il was not required , be-cause hi< opinion was there wns nn amp le supp ly iuthe city, if it was looked after (hear, bear). Amongstother ways of doieg so he (Mr. C.) quite approved oftho Mj f-jt-r.-tion made by Mr. Keogb, to change thereservoir iu Stephen-street from its present site toone at the opposite sido of that, street, and that couldbe done nt n -.mall cost. Mr. K KOUII : At a cost ofonly X'liOU. That motion of minu has been on tl .ocorporation books for tho past fifteen years. Mr.CLASH -KIT wuut on to argue very forcibly that thocnrporutiij*j in curryiug out their present course as tothe water would bu only doing what would begettingIho pi oplo a supply of impuro water, besides auaddition of taxation , aud as :> proof of tho eiistiDg-Fiippl y being of sufj icient quality, ho could mentionthnt in William-street , where ho resided for thopast eight or ten years , i lio wator he received at hishouse was excellent. Thu corporation ought not toput ruch.an 1111 amount of taxation on Iho rate -payers for what WHS not rcqnircd.

Aid. JtKDMo.M ) created much lnngbtcr, continuedfor several minutes, by jestingly rcmnrking that Mr.Clnmpctt wus nfter making an electioneering speech(The allusion was mado to tho vacancy in the TowerWard , caused by tho retirement from tho council ofMr. Harry K. Surgent). Mr. Clnmpctt hnd , severaltimes , sought to get into tho council through thoSouth Ward, but wns defeated ; ho tried tho TowerWin d also, and met tho sumo result (renewed laug h-ter). There was now n chance, he supposed ; ho wusf- biii it. to try il , and he (Aid . 15.) trusted ho (Mr. (J.)would huccccd , and if ho did , that ho would , 'erulon- r, sit in the mayor's chair (hear , hear) . As to hisobsi'rintionH on Iho water supply, be (Aid. K.) desiredto say it wasn subject which iiad engaged tho ecrioosnttcution of that body, certaiul y, since, bo bnilbccomi-a-number ol it , borne fifteen years ago. Through nilthat time the corporation spared no expeuso to im.provo it , nnd left nothing undono to benefit tho citi-7.uii8 in this important mutter (hoar , hear) . Thurocould not be a doubt of it, the present sources ofsupply wero bud, as bad1, almost, ns they could bo,nnd no improvement could make their Bupply good.In Mary-street thu reservoir could not give a purosupply, because it was tjuito close to n bacon cellar, with its level underneath it. Tho sumo wus ihocasout I'hili p-slreet , whilst that at Stephen-street was inas bad » position as could bo possibl y conceived.Thero was no doubt theio was ODO good EOUI-CO ofsupply in the city, tho Lisduggan reservoir , but therewua only ouo. Tbat was thu sourco from which Mr.Clampott received his present supply in William-at.(no said Mr. C. Yos, rejoined Aid. It., tho ncgalivoand nflirmutivc alternating for a futv seconds), but,Lhcro was uo question ,tho present Bourccs were ex.treirely bad (henr, hear).

Mr. KEOOU observed that if this discussion wasnot out of order be would liko to say a few words.Tho CIIA IIQIAN said it was out of order, but bu badallowed it becauso ho desired it to bo >ccu that thoCorporation had not neglected their duty in this im.portntit particular. Ho knew tbe Corporation hudtloti i ! much to improvo thu quality of tho supply, forhe remembered , some years ago, blood comiug throughthe pipe in Mnry -f .Kv t to liis jiouso there, u Ktato ofthings which was rumedied by tliu Corporation. Mr .K KOI . II Miid it was well known , he believed , ho tooka deep inn-rest in the water question many years ago,nud kq.l a lung tiiim at it (hear, hear) . Ho know , IIHa Tact, there was not a better supply in Ireland thanthero was at iho Sli p al i'erry bauk , running fortygallons 11 minute , procured at un outlay of i'-'W) only(hear, hear). J11 Nun-town , near tho i-'riuuds' .School, thero was another goud source, but thu pipiug ulougthere, which was put duwu ut two inches, in itselftwo small , had rusted duwu to half an inch , and thosupply, by that reason , .was checked (hear , hear) .Litiduj-guii was pure water, ;but it was a 6urfncusupply ; thero was no better water than Philip-utreot ,and Iho whole (unit lay not with thu supply itself butiu not clearing out the fountains and reservoirs (uo,no, horn Aid. lludmond) . As tbo chairman suid, bluod did go through tbo water ODO titno iu Mary -street , but that occurred through the pi pe gettiugbroken, uud tbo blood from Mr. Profasur 's cellarrunning iuto it. Tbat defect wus, however, soonremedied by tho Corporation.

Tho discussion hero ended, and tho resolutionBonding Iho mutte r beforo tbo Corporation wasagreed to.
