Wendy Harris, CPA, CAPRESIDENT AND CEO

Chief Glenn Nolan of the Missanabie Cree First NationCESO BOARD CHAIR

Unparalleled expertise to support Indigenous communities

Since 1967, our focus at CESO has been to empower people with expertise, knowledge, and experience to navigate the complexities of economic development.

We understand that despite evolving global and Canadian priorities, economic growth is intrinsic to achieving a more inclusive and sustainable world where everyone can thrive. Our unique position to deliver services and programs that promote and sustain economic growth is driven by unparalleled expertise that operates at all levels of the organization.

We are proud of the work that we’ve achieved over this past year in all of our programs.

As we enter the final year of our five-year flagship STRIVE project, we are embarking on a period of reflection of our accomplishments and lessons learned, as well as anticipation as we look towards future projects. We are pleased to say we are on track to meet or exceed all targets.

CESO also celebrated the 50th year of our work with Indigenous communities this year, transitioning to the name “Indigenous Services” to redefine our value proposition as the economic development expert with a local and global network, and to help us align ourselves more directly with communities and partners.

Our MERIT program in Mongolia expanded its work to an additional three aimags (provinces) and prioritized knowledge-sharing opportunities and peer-to-peer learning among central and local administrations. The program continues to focus on gender equality and building capacity within the public sector.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all of you who help us empower people with unparalleled expertise. Our work is made possible by our expert Volunteer Advisors who passionately share the wealth of knowledge they’ve accumulated over their careers; our clients and partners for their continued trust in the work we do together to achieve economic growth; our donors and funding partners who generously support our work. We’d also like to thank Martine Normand for her dedicated and inspired service as Chair of the Board, and we warmly welcome Glenn Nolan to the position.

This report highlights our proud achievements over the last year. We encourage you to visit our website where you will find more stories to inspire you and inform you of what we can achieve by empowering people in Canada and around the world.

When the Truth and Reconciliation Report came out, Senator Sinclair asked all Canadians to stand up and work with Indigenous peoples and the Government of Canada to facilitate change. The change of inclusion, bringing Indigenous people into the Canadian society more completely in a more systematic way that will propel them towards real prosperous growth. That is what we are offering at CESO. We have experts with years of experience in their chosen professions who want to help. Building capacity takes time. For over 50 years, we’ve been able to build on and navigate changes while staying true to our goal of supporting businesses and communities with the right expertise to realize their economic development projects.

After attending a workshop led by a CESO gender expert

and hosted by our local partner AFEET, Los Girasoles Hotel in Peru

changed its policies to protect and ensure job security for its female staff members who are on maternity leave. They also

improved working conditions for all their employees by offering private healthcare insurance.

Zeyda Moussoukoro MBAYE is an accomplished entrepreneur,

a mother and a leader. She is determined to propel women as

leaders in the Senegalese business community. Since attending a

workshop on leadership and wom-en’s economic empowerment led

by CESO experts, Zeyda is pursuing presidency at her local chambers

of commerce in the Kaolack region.

After working with a CESO expert, Snuneymuxw First Nation

Administration in Nanaimo, B.C. designed a new business plan

to attract long-term capital financing to expand their

healthcare facility and services. The new infrastructure will help

their community and other neighbouring communities get

access to quality holistic healthcare.

Through the support of MERIT in Mongolia,

the team at the Fresh Water Resources

and Nature Conservation Center (FWRNCC) clarified their mission, vision, and

roles and designed a results-based work plan

using a gender lens.
