Dear Parents and Students

Welcome to November! On the way to school early yesterday morning I noted the first early wisps of fog and was reminded of the need to ensure that families remain alert to the possibility that it may soon be necessary to call a Fog Day. I therefore want to once again remind you to keep your Emergency Telephone Tree close at hand, and to ensure you understand the process (the following link provides details: https://www.istianjin.org/our-campus/school-emergency-procedures/emergency-procedures). If you do not have your tree please email Christina Song at [email protected] so that she can email you a new one.

Please also remember that fog does not settle uniformly across the city and it is possible that your area may be experiencing heavy fog when many others are not (and similarly I might call a Fog Day when there isn’t a wisp in sight at your home). Regardless of the conditions in your own areas, once I call a Fog Day we will proceed with the two hour delayed start to school. If I do not call a Fog Day, and you are concerned, please err on the side of caution and keep your child home until you feel it is safe to send them to school.

You will all be aware that our school is guided by a series of philosophical statements that outline our beliefs and values about education and specifically in our unique context here in Tianjin. At IST these statements are the Vision, Mission, Philosophy, Motto, Learner Outcomes, and Definition of International Mindedness. We periodically solicit feedback on the school’s and community’s commitment to these statements and feedback has consistently been almost unanimously in favour of them. Nevertheless, as part of our commitment to continual improvement we do review the statements every five years and I recently convened a large committee of teachers, support staff, parents, and students to review the statements and make suggestions for possible improvements.

The committee once again endorsed the statements but did come up with several minor edits that are felt to enhance the overall message. Please take a few moments to review these edits in a dedicated ‘IST Guiding Statements Review’ section immediately following this page. If you wish to share suggestions, please do not hesitate to email them to me at [email protected] and I will review them with other committee members to see whether or not we feel this to be a broadly enough supported suggestion to warrant the committee making the changes. We will also be reviewing the statements as a staff, with students, and at an upcoming PFO meeting. Thank you!

Finally, this week I wish to share Domain F of the school’s Community Safeguarding Framework, ‘DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP’.

Digital citizenship guides students to be kind, respectful and responsible agents in the digital world. Students learn about the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal and ethical. The digital citizenship curriculum is the responsibility of all teachers.

Mission and Objectives

1. Our Students learn to engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behaviors when using technology, (including social interactions online or when using networked devices) through our Responsible Use Policy.

2. Our Teachers develop in students, the agency, skills and knowledge to exercise responsible digital citizenship.

IST SCHOOL GUIDING STATEMENTS REVIEW: COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONSEDITING NOTES: • Red = new text• Strike outs = delete original text

OBSERVATIONS/JUSTIFICATIONS:• All community surveys over the past several years have indicated near unanimous positive support for IST’s guiding

statements, both in terms as genuine and meaningful reflections of the school’s stated beliefs and values about education, and as true representations of the school’s own efforts to honor the commitments outlined in the statements. CIS/WASC/IB accreditation visits have been similarly fulsome in their recognition of the statements as authentic drivers in the school’s ongoing commitment to its community and its learning programmes. As such the committee determined that there was little evidence to suggest the need for extensive editing or reworking of the statements.

• The committee believed the term ‘self-esteem’ to be somewhat outdated, and believed the terms ‘resilient’ and ‘self-confident’ to be more accurate reflections of the ambition of developing this sense of self-belief and self-worth. These terms are also consistent with the terminology embraced by the IB (e.g., see the IB Learner Profile disposition for ‘Courageous’)

• The increasingly pervasive presence of various technologies in social life, teaching and learning, and work, necessitated the inclusion of a reference to technology in both our references to teaching and learning and our definition of international mindedness.

• ‘Balance’ in learning and lifestyle is an IB learner Profile disposition central to safeguarding student wellbeing. The committee felt explicit reference to these fundamental states of being to be necessary in order to ensure their prominence in our thinking, planning, and actions.

• As an international school, IST necessarily brings together a wide range of languages and cultures. In recognizing the richness of language and cultural diversity within our community IST must necessarily celebrate and promote multilingualism as a fundamental driver in each student’s sense of self-worth and ultimate international mindedness.

• The lead sentence of the IST philosophy references the principal role that ‘friendliness’ plays in creating a positive and inclusive environment for learning and for drawing our international community together. As such, the committee determined this to be a disposition of equal value to the original ten IB Learner Profile dispositions, one that ultimately makes an internationally educated person an internationally minded one.

• IST’s definition of International Mindedness (IM) is drawn in large part from the IST Philosophy Statement and the IB Mission Statement. Given the significant part that these statements play in our definition, it was determined that the statements should be formally referenced.

• The IM definition was previously one long sentence. The committee decided to bullet the key outcomes to make the statement easier to read and understand.

• While enriching the updated statement through specific references to the critical relevance of technology and sustainability (i.e., ‘responsible lifestyles’) in making our world a better place, the committee also felt it necessary to reference the fundamental building blocks of ‘literacy’ and ‘numeracy’.

SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY Our school is a friendly place where the needs of the student come first. We all agree that the school and the family must work closely together to help each child achieve his or her unique potential. We help our students develop self-esteem resilience and self-confidence, expecting them to be respectful of others and to recognize that everybody is entitled to his or her own point of view.

Our students love to learn. They learn to think for themselves, but they also understand the benefit of working together in teams. Our students learn how to think creatively and critically, how to make sound judgments, and how to apply their knowledge in real life situations. Teachers and parents have high social, moral and academic expectations of our students. Together, they challenge students to make the most of their abilities, and help them to make meaningful connections between the different branches of human knowledge. Our teachers appreciate that individual students learn differently, so they provide a variety of learning experiences and use a wide range of teaching resources, technologies, methods, and assessment strategies. Our Mission The IST Library is a friendly place where our community is inspired and challenged to think critically, read widely, act ethically, value creativity, and defend the right to access information.

Middle Grade Spine Poetry Ms. Lewis’ Grade 6, 7, and 8 classes visited the library to create Spine Poetry. The objective, make a poem using books from the fiction section of the library. We discussed word choice and how a poem is words to you. Each student, after creating their poem wrote a little blurb about what their poem meant.

Parent Book Club Thank you to all the parents that attended our Book Club on October 31. We discussed The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows; enjoying pastries from Le Crobag, fruit, coffee, and tea.

For the month of November, the book selected is Perfume: the Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind. The library currently has two copies in English and are looking at purchasing other language in the very near future. Date and time for the next book club will be decided soon, so stay tuned.

Athletics News

The U11 Girls and Boys Football teams enjoyed a beautiful day in Beijing for the annual ISAC championship on October 27th. The girls team played a fantastic tournament, proving to be quite the challenge for the bigger schools in their pool. Despite having a small bench, they went 5-1-1 and brought home the 3rd place and sportsmanship trophies. Their awards were much deserved and it was great to hear our IST families cheering from the sidelines! The boys A & B teams faced similar strength in their opponents and fell short in a few matches with a narrow one goal difference. Our boys worked hard and represented IST with admirable skill and passion for the game. We are very proud of all three teams, who have shown exceptional commitment throughout the season. Thank you again to IST parents for your support, to Ms. Liu for joining the girls this weekend, and to our coaches, Mr. Akhtar, Mr. Lobsey and Mr. Akov for your inspirational leadership! The final CCA football session will run on Monday, November 8th.

Our Cross Counry team will have their final run around the Lake at Meijiang Scenic Area on Tuesday, November 6th. The bus will depart IST at 3:10 and the event will finish at 4:30pm. Please be sure to return the permission forms no later than Monday morning if you have not done so already. Good luck and best wishes for a sunny afternoon of running! Thank you to all volunteers who will assist Ms. Herewini in marshaling the course.

A final good luck to our High School Boys’ and Girls’ Volleyball teams as they depart for the annual ACAMIS tournament next week. Our students have shown exemplary commitment and teamwork and we will be cheering loud and proud from Tianjin! A reminder to all players to submit your travel documents to the Athletics Office by Monday morning. GO BLAZE!!

WHAT DO WE OFFER?

MS/HS food offer

A retail concept oriented environment as MS/HS students

are young adults who need choices, brands/concepts and

freedom in deciding the composition of their lunch.

We propose a different service concept that blends and

merges the “A la Carte “and “Set Menu” offers

into one single frame.

Students will have several stations to choose from, each

station serving daily dishes bound into a concept

(e.g. Grill, Wok, Western, and Asian, etc.). As such,

each customer can chose between paying the basic fare

for the main dish (A la Carte) or upgrading the chosen

main dish into a Set Menu or a Deal price lower than the

sum of the different components. The upgrade allows a

drink + dessert or Fruit + salad or Soup in a separate plate.
