On the 6th December, Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 were treated to a thrilling trip to the pantomime to see the magical Snow White.

First everyone travelled by coach to get to Basil-don Towngate Theatre. When they arrived at the theatre, Buttsbury took over the whol auditori-um – both upstairs and downstairs!

Lorcan, Fraser, Dom and Bray in Year 5 quot-ed, “We were really, really excited about the panto coming up. We were near the top of the theatre which meant we could see everything!”

The cast were amazing and were very confident to perform in front of approximately 500 chil-dren. It was very funny because it made every-body laugh, it also was very dramatic! They also let everybody join in with a dance and song to go with it which included lots of FORTNITE dance and the song that featured the one and only Mrs Pai!

As a result, everyone thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to go again next year to see Peter Pan. Jaime Obery from Year 5 even told us that she was really excited and wanted to see Snow White again!

Year 3 Christmas

Production

By Ruby Toll, Aisha Sarfraz and Kesia Crees

On the week beginning, Monday the 3rd of December 2018, the Year 3s did their school play (Scrooge at School), which they have been per-forming most of the week.

Miss Miller, the director and Head of Year 3, told us that she was very ex-cited about the play and that everyone in Year 3 had a part.

The play was about a Headmaster called Mr Humbug (played by Tom Pierce and James Ferris), who hated Christmas; he even banned it!

After a few visits from the spirits of Christmas past, present and future, he finally saw the light!

“I thought it was absolutely amazing; I loved the singing, the dancing and the acting!” Mrs Robinson quoted. “In fact, I loved it all!”

It really got everyone in the Christ-mas mood; the acting was amazing and now everyone has high expecta-tions for next year’s play.

Well done Year Three! We are all sad it finished so soon.

BYT Anti-bullying

Week By Edward Dickinson, Olivia Smith and Zachary Liggins.

From 13th November to 18th November, Buttsbury Junior School participated in anti-bullying week. The children learnt about different types of bullying (cyber, verbal, phys-ical and indirect), how to handle bullying situations and how to prevent them from happening again, to ei-ther themselves or the others around them. Luckily at Buttsbury, bullying is non-existent on the playground and in the classroom.

In addition to anti-bullying week, BYT (Basildon Youth Theatre) representative Les-ley spent either a morning or afternoon with each and eve-ry year group. The whole school was entertained by Lesley’s hysterical yet educa-tional talks - even the teach-ers were amused!

Year 6 student Ebony quoted, “It was amazing and I can’t wait for the next!” Addition-ally, Henry described the ses-sion as inspirational.

Everyone had a fantastic day and it was a worthwhile ex-perience for the whole school.

Children In Need By Yahia Asfour and Lana Bailey

On the 10th of November, Buttsbury Junior School showed their monumental kindness by raising £726.34 for Children in Need during an incredible day (there even was a cake sale!)

First of all, the children got the chance to come in in their spotty clothes, Pudsey clothes or even their pyja-mas!

Oliver (5M) told us, “It was very amusing and very fun-ny, especially seeing the teachers in school uniform!”

“I enjoyed the Pudsey things and it was very comfortable in my pyjamas,” said Harry (5T).

Not only did everyone get to enjoy non-uniform, but there was lots of Pudsey merchan-dise, like wristbands and badges, plus a design a friend for Pudsey competition. Con-gratulations to all the win-ners!

3PR By Adam Havis, Cem Mu-sabak, Harry Jones In September, Buttsbury Junior School launched a scheme to prevent parents parking in restricted areas. The 3PR project was creat-ed by Chelmsford County Council who sent a repre-sentative named Claire to give us an introduction on the brand new 3PR project.

The 3PR scheme was put into action on Tuesday 25th of September. If a child walks into 1 out of the 3 3PR zones, then they re-ceive a token to put in their class pot. Each class has a 3PR pot and the class that has the most tokens in their class pot wins the 3PR tro-phy which they get to keep for the week. The Core 5, part of the School Council, started handing out the tokens with the help of teachers but

since then each week it has changed to other leadership roles that children have ac-complished in Year 6. This includes House Captains and other School Council representatives. Adam, a writer of this arti-cle, said “It’s really fun to be giving out the tokens but a downside is that I have to get to school early.” Miss Unite said, “I think this is a fantastic initiative. It raises awareness of lots of different issues such as parking and environmental problems. It also gives chil-dren time to talk to their parents about the day ahead on their way to school. Plus, my class won the trophy in the first week which was great!” Buttsbury is hoping to con-tinue this project for the whole of this year and hopefully will continue it into future years as well!

Happy Shoesday By Yahia Asfour, Harry Weston , Albert Longlade , Aisha Sarfraz

On the 25th of September, it was Happy Shoesday, when the students were allowed to go to school in their choice of shoes. This marked the second day of Walk to School Week where the pupils are encouraged to think about keeping healthy and the impact of pollution in our local area.

Everybody enjoyed showing their shoes off to their friends which ranged from giant slippers to tiny trainers. Harriet Rowe-Goody in 5S (a slipper wearer) quoted, “I loved the experience of wearing my slippers to school. I think it was brilliant to see everyone’s funky shoes.”

Mr Graves, Deputy Head of Buttsbury Junior School ex-plained, “There were lots of different types of shoes. Some

were light up trainers, some were slippers, some people were even wearing what looked like Narwhals on their feet!”

Overall, Happy Shoesday was a total success and we are look-ing forward to having it again next year.

C o l c h e s t e r ’ s Castle By Ruby Toll and Kesia Crees

On the 9th of October, Year 4 went to Colchester Castle to find out more about when the Romans ruled Britain. The Year Fours were super excited. Emily in 4U explained, “I felt excited, happy and puzzled about going!” before leaving for her school trip. After the trip, Miss Unite quoted “The best thing about the day was the story tour where we travelled back in time and walked through the caves under the castle. Our guide was a fantastic story-teller!” The school trip was a great success and was highly educational. Thank you Col-chester Castle for giving Year 4 a fun, educational and brilliant experience!

Young Shakespeare Company By Jaime Obery and Lila Eve

On the 17th of October, Year 6 were treated to the Young Shakespeare Com-pany coming in and putting on a perfor-mance of Shakespeare’s well known play, “Macbeth”. They very much en-joyed it and didn’t want it to end, even the teachers loved it!

There was a lot of audience interaction to keep the children entertained. Eva in 6A explained, “It was great fun and I would love to see it again!” Emma in 6C said “I really loved it and loved them letting us join in.” All of Year 6 learnt a lot from the play because all the different people played different parts, showing them how they felt and how they acted. Mrs Abbot in Year 6 told us that she thought it was fantastic and very engaging for the Year 6 pupils.

Playing Victorian By Aisha Sarfraz and Fatima Ahmed On the 11th and 12th December, Year 5 performed their fantastic show. It was a new production at BJS and it was all about The Little Match Girl. It was a thrilling experi-ence for all of Year 5, with everyone in Year 5 took part in the produc-tion. It was a great success and considering they only had 3 whole year-group rehearsals, the final performance really impressed Mrs Robinson and the parents. The show had turned into something spectacular!

Ruby in 5T stated, ‘ I loved my part as an angel and eve-ryone was amazing at their part!’ “Everything was great and I thought The Little Match Girl was phenomenal!” quoted Harry

Although the story was a little sad and had an important message. everyone who watched and participated was amazingly happy after the show and it was a great op-portunity to share everyone’s acting skills.

Harvest Festival! By Tayla James and Laila Walton

On Friday 5th October, Buttsbury Junior School travelled to Christchurch to enjoy a spectacular morning performing in front of friends and family. The students sang songs and recited poems to celebrate Har-vest. They then listened to Reverend Fowler and she told us about Kenya and the Kenya blessing. We do this blessing to thank those around us and God. Every year, Buttsbury Junior School donates gifts to the Basil-don Community Resource Centre to help those who are less fortunate. All the food we donate gets eaten by homeless and those with no home or money. The day was a massive hit and we will never forget it. Harvest festival will always be a pleasure for everyone.

WAT A TRIP! By Edward Dickinson and Zachary Liggins

On the 18th September, Year 6 went on a school trip to the na-ture reserve Wat Tyler. They did many exciting activities and had lots of fun. The activities included bug hunting in the meadows; mini beast hunting in the woods and pond dipping in the lakes. They learnt lots of amazing facts about wildlife and saw many interesting insects that they had never seen before. Year Six student James quoted, “It was a very fascinating experience.”

Portals to the Past Year 6 By Harry Jones and Adam Havis On Thursday 8th November, Year 6 had a Vi-king day where they could learn about how Vi-kings invaded England and play Viking games, a lot of fun! A man came in (who was dressed like a Viking) and taught many Viking facts, like where the Vikings came from. Furthermore, they got to dress up as Vikings and pretend to be Vikings with swords and shields. One group stayed in the main hall and learnt more about a Vikings daily life and learnt about what Vikings used to cook, iron and lots more. Some of the objects were a Viking iron, cup, drinking horn and coin. Lots of the children en-joyed looking at all the objects. The second group did a quiz that had twelve sections in it. They found the answers because there were 12 boards (one for each section). They were given a quiz paper and they had to walk around the room to find the answers that were on the boards. The final group played a Viking game called 5 men’s Morris and it was very fun. It was a bit like Connect 4. The children had to get three counters in a row and they had to trap their op-ponent’s counters. After the first two activities, everyone paused so that they could have break. All the groups swapped around until they had all had finished everything. Connor stated, “I really enjoyed finding out about the Vikings and I learnt so much, like in previous years. The man who taught us was great again!” Even the teachers learnt some-thing! Everybody really liked doing all the Viking ac-tivities and the rest of the school are looking forward to doing it in years to come. All in all, it was a super day.

Year 3 Chelmsford

Cathedral By Harry Weston and Aisha Sarfraz

Chelmsford Cathedral was the first trip for the Year 3 students in Buttsbury Junior School. It took place on the 24th and 25th of September. This was because Year 3 were learning about churches and cathedrals in R.E. The children did lots of activities but people’s favourite was when they pre-tended to be monks. They were silent as they made their prayers to God because monks take vows of silence. One of the activities was learning about stained-glass windows. Year 3 learnt how the stained glass can tell a story. They also drew pictures of the things they liked and learnt about religious objects. They also used wooden blocks to build a church and cross. “We loved dressing up as the kings and learning about the Bible,’’quoted

Louise in 3M.

Science Dome By Albert Longlade and Yahia Asfour

Year 5 experienced an amazing time when they went into the science dome. and enjoyed the amazing experience of discovering our solar system. You went inside where there would be a camera in the middle that projects all the imag-es explaining in great detail. Michael quoted “It was very interesting and exiting.” Fraser and Bray quoted “We liked it because it’s cool and we like science” Mr. Tweedie (a year 5 teacher) quoted that it was amazing and even though it was the second time he had seen it, it was interesting even as an adult! First, they taught Year 5 about the Earth and its movement around the sun and its axis and the coordinates of countries around it. Then they learned about all the discoveries made on the moon. Year 5 were in for a treat as at the end, they learnt about the Sun, its flames and magnetic fields, and how it created our solar system. At the afternoon, some lucky children were picked out for another session about the solar system’s planets and their mysteries. It was very interesting as the facts had a special sprinkle of amusement and spe-cialness, for example, did you know Jupiter’s Red Spot was a storm that went on for centuries? Jack in 5S quoted, “It felt like I was in space!”

Sandford Mill By Daniel Tanner

On the 10th & 11th of November 2018, Year 5 travelled to Sandford Mill, a place of sheer impressiveness. It was a.m.a.z.i.n.g!

The students carried out many fun activities. Some of the highlights were making their own rivers, playing Pooh stick races and observing gushing waterfalls.

Mr. Tweedie who participated in the visit explained, “I en-joyed that trip so much, learning about rivers all over again,” he told us.

“This trip ruled!” said Kyle, 5F.

Overall, this was an amazing trip!

YEAR 3 MAGIC SHOW! By Daniel Tanner and Lana Bailey

On Wednesday 14th November 2018, Year 3 had a day of magic, laughs and a TON of Abra, Kadabra and Alakazams! From dazzling dice tricks to confusing calendars, Year 3 saw it all – and had a blast learning about arithmetic!

Some of the magician’s mind-boggling tricks included cup tricks, dice tricks and calendar tricks.

Year 3 explained,” His tricks were brilliant. He left us really confused!”

Miss Miller, who teaches in 3M, told us that the magic show was all about mental arithmetic. Everyone enjoyed it!
