Vocational Education and Training [VET] in Schools is a program delivered to secondary school students as part of their Western Australian Certificate of Education.The courses delivered in this program provide credits towards nationally recognised VET qualifications within the Australia Qualifications Framework. The training that students receive reflects specific industry competency standards and is delivered by a Registered Training Organisation or a school in partnership with a Registered Training Organisation.

A key feature of VET in Schools program delivered is the integration of vocational options within traditional academic studies at senior secondary school level.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Schools courses delivered to secondary school students allow Year 11 and 12 students to:• Develop industry specific skills

• Gain nationally recognised VET qualifications and units of competency while completing Western Australian Certificate of Education

• Develop employability skills, and

• Gain an understanding of the world of work, providing them with valuable experience to assist with planning and pursuing their career pathways.

How to register for a VET in Schools programNorth Metropolitan TAFE offers VET in Schools courses to all secondary schools throughout the Perth metropolitan area.

Application must be made online through the North Metropolitan TAFE website at:

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships enable students to begin an apprenticeship or traineeship while studying Years 10, 11and 12.A School-based apprenticeship or traineeship is a combination of school, on the job training (with a Registered Training Organisation) and paid work (with a host employer); this could provide students with credit towards a nationally recognised qualification.

Students generally spend one day per week in the workplace, however during school holidays, students may be able to work extra hours by mutual arrangement and negotiation between the student and the host employer.

How to register for a school-based apprenticeship or traineeshipThe College delivers the training and assessment component of school-based apprenticeships and traineeships to all high schools throughout the North West metropolitan area.

It is the responsibility of the student to obtain an employer before a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship can commence.

North Metropolitan TAFE is the premier training organisation servicing the inner city and northern metropolitan area of Perth, with campuses in Northbridge, Mount Lawley, Leederville, East Perth, Nedlands, Joondalup, Clarkson, Balga and Midland.

Attending a VET in Schools program:Students are responsible for their own transport arrangements to and from the North Metropolitan TAFE campuses and training centres.

Attending all designated training days, including those that may occur on a school designated pupil free day.

Student ResponsibilitiesSecondary school students attending a VET in schools program at North Metropolitan TAFE have the opportunity to learn in an adult environment with students of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

There is an expectation that when attending classes students will assume a greater responsibility for their own care and safety than may be the case when attending school.

As with all students enrolled at North Metropolitan TAFE, school students are expected to adhere to the Student Code of Conduct.

While attending North Metropolitan TAFE, students are under the supervision of the lecturer taking the class.

Students will not be supervised during break times.

Students are expected to remain within the College grounds unless they provide the lecturer with written notification from a parent or the school that they intend to leave the College earlier then the advertised class finish time.

Work experienceSome programs may involve workplace experience to support the learning program. Students will be given information about any workplace experience prior to the commencement of the program. The individual student will be responsible for arranging their own transport to and from the workplace.

In some cases it is the responsibility of the school to organise work experience. The schools will be notified in writing of these requirements prior to the final acceptance of a student’s enrolment.

CLARKSON

This state-of-the-art facility is the main campus for trades training in Perth’s northern corridor and is accessible via bus service from Clarkson train station.

This campus offers training programs in bricklaying, plastering, tiling, carpentry, joinery, metal fabrication and electrical trades.

The design includes dedicated training workshops and open spaces for each trade. It delivers trades training in a real world environment to ensure our students have exposure to different disciplines and learn to work collaboratively on projects.

EAST PERTH

The East Perth campus is located close to cafes, shops and public transport, and the free city CAT buses.

The East Perth campus is TAFE’s Resources Industry precinct and offers programmes of great importance to West Australia’s development including: sustainability and renewable energy, building and construction, mining, surveying and science and technology.

Other programs also located at East Perth include Digital Content, Science, Resources and Environmental, and an important segment of our large number of Engineering programs - Electronics, Computer Systems Engineering and Networking as well as Electrical Trades.

JOONDALUP (INJUNE WAY)

This Automotive Training Centre delivers pre-apprenticeships and an apprenticeship (automotive electrical technology).

The modern workshop and facilities act as a live‘mechanic department’ where students service vehicles using equipment you would expect to find in any automotive workshop.

JOONDALUP (KENDREW CRESCENT)

North Metropolitan TAFE’s headquarter campus enjoys a tranquil lakeside location in the heart of Joondalup, one of the fastest growing regions in Western Australia.

It is only a short walk from Joondalup’s rapidly growing central business district, Lakeside Shopping Centre and very conveniently, Joondalup Bus/Train Station, connecting you to Perth City in less than 25 minutes.

JOONDALUP (MCLARTY AVENUE)

This Health and Wellness Training campus features an $11 million simulation hospital which gives students an understanding of what it’s like to work in a live hospital environment; as well as two lecture theatres and a fully operational training gym for fitness students to develop their personal training skills.

LEEDERVILLE

Leederville campus is located in the heart of Leederville, a vibrant, inner-city suburb minutes away from the Perth city centre, close to cafés, restaurants, shops, recreation facilities and public transport.

Leederville houses the Community Learning Centre, the centrepiece for our Human Services precinct.

The Centre is located in a light-industrial, heritage building and provides training to over 4,000 students annually in a range of programs including Community Services, Children’s Services, Aged Care, Disability Services, Youth Work and Mental Health.

The warehouse building, a dynamic learning space can be transformed into a variety of learning environments. Also known for its focus on music, the campus houses an industry standard professional recording studio and live performance venue with full staging, lighting and sound production.

MOUNT LAWLEY

Mount Lawley campus is conveniently located near the Beaufort Street cafe strip and close to public transport. The campus is known for its focus on health services, and houses a simulated hospital learning environment.

ORAL HEALTH CENTRE (NEDLANDS)

All of our dentistry courses are run from the Oral Health Care Centre of Western Australia (OHCWA) The Centre is an alliance between North Metrpolitan TAFE, the University of Western Australia and Curtin University.

OHCWA is part of the University of WA site and provides state of the art training equipment, facilities and expertise in the field of dentistry.

Our students gain hands-on experience in a modern simulated dental surgery setting.

PERTH (NORTHBRIDGE)

The vibrant Perth campus is located in the centre of the cultural area of Northbridge and close to the heart of the city.

The Perth campus has seven buildings all located in and around Aberdeen Street, just off William Street, Northbridge.As the largest campus, Perth comprises of four main buildings, each with excellent facilities. Known as the Knowledge Industries Precinct, the campus houses centres of specialisation in:

Building and Engineering, Creative Industries, Travel and Tourism and English Language and other languages.

The building houses training portfolios for the key skill areas of engineering, architecture design and building and programs for the lifestyle industries including high tech massage and beauty therapy treatment rooms.

This two-year course is aimed at students looking to gain an apprenticeship in the Construction industry to become a bricklayer; plasterer; tiler; carpenter or joiner.

In Term 1 of Year 1: students gain an introduction to the construction industry – its culture, occupations, job roles and workplace expectations. They learn to apply OHS requirements; carry out measurements/calculations; communicate in the workplace; plan and organise work; read and interpret plans and specifications; and work effectively, sustainably and safely in the construction industry.

From Term 2 of Year 1 onwards: students choose one of the following trade streams where they learn the specifics of the trade and participate in a work placement. Each trade stream leads directly into the Certificate III trade qualification and students gain credit for the competencies they complete.

BRICKLAYING/BLOCKLAYINGStudents learn to apply basic levelling procedures, carry out basic concreting, setting out and demolition, erect and dismantle scaffolding, handle and prepare materials, lay masonry walls and corners and use tools and equipment.

SOLID PLASTERINGStudents learn to apply basic levelling procedures, erect and dismantle scaffolding, handle materials, prepare surfaces for plastering, use tools and equipment and work safely at heights.

WALL AND FLOOR TILINGStudents learn to use levelling devices, waterproof internal wet areas, concrete simple forms, handle tiling materials, prepare surfaces for tiling application, use relevant tools and lay tiles.

CARPENTRY AND JOINERYStudents learn to carry out levelling operations, construct wall frames, erect and dismantle scaffolding, handle materials, install flooring systems, use equipment and explosive power tools and work safely at heights.

2nd year: Wall and Floor Tiling

As part of this qualification you will learn how to lay bricks and stone and how to structure tiles, marble, concrete blocks and other masonry materials to build or repair walls, partitions, fireplaces, arches and other structures.

On successful completion of the first year, students will be able to complete a second Certificate II pathway in Wall & Floor Tiling.

This two-year course is aimed at students looking to gain an apprenticeship to become an electrician. It leads directly into a Certificate III trade qualification and students gain credit for the competencies they complete. With a large work placement component, students obtain hands-on experience in the electrotechnology field.

Students learn to apply OHS practices in the workplace; carry out routine activities in an electrotechnology environment; identify and select components, accessories and materials for work activities; participate in environmentally sustainable work practices; solve problems in extra- low voltage single path circuits and in multiple path d.c. circuits; and use equipment/plant/technologies. Students learn to deliver a service to customers; maintain documentation; provide basic instruction in the use of electrotechnology apparatus and use basic computer applications.

This two-year course is aimed at students looking to gain an apprenticeship in the metal fabrication industry to become a welder, heavy welder, boilermaker (fabrication-heavy) or sheet metal worker (fabrication-light).

It can provide students with some credit towards the relative Certificate III trade qualification. With a large work placement component, students obtain hands-on experience in the metals and engineering area.

Students learn to carry out heat treatment, manual production assembly, manual production welding, sheet and plate assembly, manual soldering and use workshop machines for basic operations.

Metal fabricators and welders manufacture, assemble and maintain mining structures, heavy transport and earth moving equipment, bridge building, engineering components, building structures, refineries, oil-rigs, storage vessels, shipbuilding and agricultural equipment.

As part of this pre-apprenticeship program you will learn how to cut, shape, join and finish metal to make metal structures and products. You will also learn how to use tools, measure and calculate and draw and interpret sketches.

North Metropolita TAFE’s specialised metals and engineering workshops are purpose built. Coupled with our industry relevant equipment, they provide you with a realistic study environment so that you’re ready to work, in these high demand trades, upon graduation

MEM20105Certificate II in Engineering (Mechanical Fitter and Machinist Pre-Apprenticeship)

Fitters are often employed in engineering workshops. There are also a large number of skilled workers in the mining industry and on-off shore oil rigs, repairing and servicing heavy mining equipment. Fitters also work with pumps, hydraulics and pneumatics.

Machinists work from detailed drawings to create parts (made from metal and other materials) using lathes, milling machines and various power tools, to make and service machinery, pumps and other equipment.

This qualification will teach you the practical skills you need to make and repair machines, parts and tools. You will also learn about measuring and cutting, safety in the workplace, quality control, mechanical cutting and machining and how to draw and interpret sketches.

You will also be required to undertake work placement as part of the course.

This new qualification will be delivered in 2017 for VET in Schools students who wish to undertake a qualification related to health.

This qualification may be used as a pathway for a future career in health work. At this level, work takes place under direct and regular supervision within clearly defined guidelines. Students will gain an understanding of how to work in a population health context to share health information with a diverse range of clients in a safe and healthy manner.

Competent laboratory personnel are in high demand in a vast range of industries. You could see yourself working in laboratories in a range of dynamic fields such as biomedical, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, medical, mining, petroleum, agriculture, physics, chemical, environmental, food or forensics. Examples of the work of sampler/testers include:

• A field officer working in environmental monitoring may visit a catchment area to collect water samples

• Sampler/testers take air samples for testing for microbial monitoring of air conditioning or cooling towers.

This course will teach you how to create the right look for day, evening and special occasions as well as popular techniques such as smokey eye, classic eye and camouflage. You will also learn an introduction to retail operations and how to promote a range of beauty products Your training will take place at our Northbridge or Joondalup Campuses in North Metropolitan TAFE’s state of the art facilities, which includes an open to the public beauty salon, equipped to industry standards.

YEAR 12 PROGRAM, 2017North Metropolitan TAFE (formally Central Institute of Technology) established its Athlete Development Centre (ADC) in 2009, and has strong partnerships with the sports industry such as West Coast Eagles, Football West and Basketball WA among others.

In 2015, North Metropolitan TAFE launched a unique program for Year 12 school students. This included a Certificate III in Sport and Recreation (providing further assistance to some students to meet their minimum

WACE requirements). Graduates of the Year 12 program are guaranteed entry to the full ADC Program, a 12 month Diploma of Sports Development qualification (or other related courses such as Certificate III or IV in Fitness if that is their preference).

Due to the overwhelming success of the program over the past two years, this will be offered again in 2017.
