ST. JOHN’S UNIVERSITY QUICK FACTS

2017 RED STORM LACROSSE GAME NOTES

• Stony Brook boasts an experienced and strong midfield, including preseason All-American selection Jeff Reh and All-America East First Team (2016) member, Alex Corpolongo, brother of the Red Storm’s own Justin Corpolongo. • In the team’s season-opener, Stony Brook topped Sacred Heart, 12-11, on the road. Freshman Tom Haun led the way for the Sea-wolves with four goals and Alex Corpolongo added three goals and two assists.

UP NEXT • The Johnnies hit the road for the first time in 2017 as the team travels to take on High Point in the first-ever meeting between the programs. • The game will be played on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 1 p.m., at Vert Stadium. A live stream of the event will be available on the Big South Network.

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE • As has been the norm during the Jason Miller regime, the St. John’s lacrosse team has to navigate one of the toughest schedules in NCAA Division I and in program history this year. • The Red Storm will take on four teams that competed in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, three conference champions in Syracuse, Yale and Marquette, and seven teams ranked in the final 2016 USILA Coaches’ Poll. • At the end of January, the two preseason polls were announced, further confirming the difficulty of St. John’s 2017 slate. In the 2017 Maverik Men’s DI Preseason Media Poll, nine Red Storm opponents were either ranked or received votes. Three of these teams cracked the top-10, all of which will visit the Johnnies at home this year (Denver, Syracuse and Yale).

RED STORM IN NATIONAL STATISTICAL RANKINGS • Last season, Eric DeJohn cracked the NCAA Division I top-20 in a couple of different offensive statistical categories. • DeJohn ranked 14th in points per game with and even 4.00, and sat at 17th in assists per game with 1.91. • Returning junior Jason DeBenedictis finished the year as the nation’s 30th-leading goal scorer, with 2.36 per game. The junior also added six man-up goals throughout 2016, which ranked 23rd in the nation.

TALK ABOUT A SMART BUNCH • The Red Storm placed 30 student-athletes on the BIG EAST All-Aca-demic Team for 2015-16 after having 27 selections in 2014-15.• In 2016, 2015, 2013 and 2012, the BIG EAST Conference recog-nized the St. John’s lacrosse team with a Team Academic Excellence Award, given yearly to the team that posts the highest collective grade-point average in its respective conference sport. During that span, the team’s cumulative 3.27 (2016), 3.25 (2015), 3.13 (2013) and 3.14 (2012) GPA ranked the highest of the BIG EAST member schools.• In 2015, Graduated Senior Mark DiFrangia garnered Scholar All-America accolades from the Unit-ed States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association and was also a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award. ST. JOHN’S LACROSSE & ESPN: SIX GAMES TO BE FEATURED ON ESPN3• St. John’s lacrosse fans across the country will have the opportunity to watch the Red Storm in H.D.-quality this spring as the St. John’s University Television Network (SJU-TV) will produce six Red Storm lacrosse home games that will be carried live to more than 99 million homes on ESPN3 as part of a production agreement with ESPN.• The ESPN3 broadcast schedule includes the home-opener against Rutgers (Feb. 11), non-confer-ence games versus Syracuse (March 11), Drexel (March 18) and Yale (April 4), and the Red Storm’s

WELCOME TO OUR HOUSE: DASILVA MEMORIAL FIELD GETS TURF UPGRADE • The St. John’s Athletic Department completed the installment of a new turf field for DaSilva Memorial Field, home of the Red Storm lacrosse team this summer. LandTek, an on-site general contractor that specializes in sports facility design and construction, completed the construction. • “We are excited about the renovation of DaSilva Memorial Field, and the installation of a brand new state-of-the-art FieldTurf surface,” said Senior Associate Athletics Director John Diffley. “This project will result in a top-quality field that will greatly benefit our student-athletes for practice and competition.” • LandTek installed a Multi40 turf, which features ballast layers of sand and top layers of perfor-mance infill for proven playability. The turf is complete with a separate underpad for proper player safety. • The new FieldTurf surface features both St. John’s and BIG EAST branding. The upgraded turf playing surface complements a modernized six-lane track that was installed at DaSilva Memorial Field in 2014.

2017 RED STORM LACROSSE GAME NOTES

SWEET SENIOR DAY• Boasting one of the largest senior classes in recent memory, the Red Storm celebrated the eight-man senior class with an on-field pregame ceremony that was attended by family, friends, teammates and St. John’s Athletics administrators. • Goalie Harry Burke, midfielder and co-captain James Bonanno, midfielder Ricky Cotton, attackman Eric DeJohn, midfielder Chris Hughes, LSM/defenseman and co-captain Mike Paoline, defenseman Eric Moosbrugger, and defenseman Anthony Oddo have contrib-uted to some of the most memorable moments in program history. As freshmen, this group played a part in the Red Storm’s historic 2013 campaign which saw the team post the most victories since program reinstatement in 2005 and upset the top-ranked Irish in South Bend. This season, while playing seven NCAA top-20 RPI ranked teams, this group has led the Red Storm to halftime leads over then-No. 3 Yale and then-No. 18 Villanova.• Donning the red and white one final time, the seniors once again led the way for the Red Storm who came away with a gritty 8-5 victory over visiting BIG EAST rival Georgetown. Harry Burke stifled the Hoyas attack with a career-high 15-save game with St. John’s leading the entire contest.

ERIC DEJOHN JOINS PRESTIGIOUS 40-40 CLUB• In the Red Storm’s thrilling, last-second victory over Siena on March 5 of last year, graduated senior Eric DeJohn wrote his name in the St. John’s history books as he became just the eighth member of the 40-40 club (40 goals and 40 assists throughout a career).• Needing only two assists to accomplish this feat, DeJohn notched his second assist of the afternoon in the second quarter. The Syra-cuse, N.Y., native tallied a 44-point season last year, scoring 23 goals and adding 21 assists. With his 44-points last year, DeJohn ended with 63 goals and 52 assists in his career, making him just ninth player in program history to eclispe the 100-point mark in a career.

THREE JOHNNIES INK ALL-BIG EAST TEAM HONORS• A trio of Red Storm student-athletes in Eric DeJohn, James Bonanno and Jason DeBenedictis were named to the 2016 All-BIG EAST Teams. DeJohn earned first-team honors while Bonnano and DeBenedictis both found themselves a spot on the second-team. • This marks the fifth season in a row that at least three members of the St. John’s lacrosse team have been named to the All-Confer-ence teams.• DeJohn makes his second appearance on the All-BIG EAST First Team in as many years, as the attackman became the fourth player in program history to earn All-BIG EAST First Team accolades in 2015. Bonanno and DeBenedictis collect their first all-conference accolades after impressive campaigns as important members of the Red Storm’s offense. • DeJohn’s senior campaign was a memorable one as the attackman successfully penciled his name into the St. John’s record books. In three years and 38 career-appearances, DeJohn scored 115 points on 63 goals and 52 assists. During St. John’s thrilling last-minute vic-tory over Siena on March 5, DeJohn became just the eighth player in program history to join the prestigious 40-40 club, scoring 40 goals and 40 assists throughout a career. DeJohn’s 115 career-points puts him eighth all-time in school history and his 52 assists rank fifth. In January the attackman became just the sixth St. John’s lacrosse player to be selected in the Major League Collegiate Lacrosse Draft as the attackman was selected by the Rochester Rattlers in the seventh round. • As a speedy, aggressive midfielder, Bonanno played the role of “quarterback” for the Red Storm’s attack for much of 2016. The red-shirt senior co-captain tallied the third-highest point total on the team this season (22) on 14 goals and eight assists. Bonanno made his impact on the team since his first day on campus, as the redshirt season appeared in every contest throughout his four years, including starting every game this season. The Wantagh, N.Y., native made his impact both on and off the field, and was honored by the St. John’s Athletic Department with The Francis A. McCall Memorial Award during the 2016 Athletic Awards Banquet. This award is given to the player on the men’s lacrosse team that is looked upon as the biggest role model both on and off the field. • DeBenedictis, a attackman, enjoyed a breakout 2016 campaign in which he led the Red Storm in goals scored with 33 and was second on the team in points with 40. The Holbrook, N.Y., native added seven assists and led the team with six man-up goals. DeBenedictis notched 2.36 goals per game throughout his sophomore campaign, which ranked fifth in the BIG EAST and 29th in NCAA Division I. His three man-up goals in conference play placed him tied for first in the BIG EAST. While playing an important role in the offense as an explosive shot taker in front of the net, DeBenedictis notched seven hat tricks and enjoyed two career-high six-point games. In March, DeBenedictis was named to his first-career BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after registering eight goals and two assists during a 1-1 week for the Johnnies. He also enjoyed a career-high five goal game against Villanova on April 23.

BRIAN GAFFNEY: LATE GAME HEROICS • Brian Gaffney used some late game heroics to secure the Red Storm’s first victory of 2016, as the midfielder netted a game-winning goal with 1.9 seconds left in regulation to lift St. John’s over Siena, 10-9. • St. John’s retained possession with just 22 seconds left in regulation after the defense successfully blocked a shot from Siena’s at-tack. Nick Heller, who added two goals in the contest, scooped the ground ball and began the St. John’s run towards goal. Heller dumped off a lead pass to TJ Marron in the attacking unit as the clock fell under 10 seconds. Marron, who was credited with the game-winning assist, heaved his pass towards to the middle of the field near the top of the crease, finding Gaffney. The St. John’s co-captain short sticked this pass into a bouncing shot past the Siena netminder.

For the second-straight year, the St. John’s lacrosse team dedicated the month of November to the growth of facial hair, particularly moustaches, for an oustanding cause: raising money and awareness for various men’s health issues.

Dubbed “Movember” by the Movember Foundation, the charitable organization works with its global men’s health partners and academic institutions to ensure the programs ac-celerate improvements to some of the biggest health issues faced by men. In two years, #SJULAX has raised more than $40,000 for the cause.

St. John’s Lacrosse Participates in Charitable “Movember

“We’re proud to support this again in 2016. This or-ganization has funded over 1,200 projects worldwide to address issues that threaten men’s health, in par-ticular prostate cancer, testicular cancer and suicide,” said Head Coach Jason Miller. “We welcomed other athletic staff members, coaches, and administrators to join our team for this fight and are happy to help

in whatever way possible.”

PRONUNCIATION GUIDE

2017 RED STORM LACROSSE GAME NOTES

Last season the Johnnies received a number of team and individual accolades for its hard work on and off the lacrosse field. Coach Miller’s squad earned three All-BIG EAST Team selections in graduated attackman Eric DeJohn (First Team) graduated midfielder James Bonanno (Second

Team) and rising junior Jason DeBenedictis (Second Team). Off the field, the Red Storm domi-nated in the classroom once again under the tutelage of Coach Miller as the team captured its fourth BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award for lacrosse in the past five seasons. Thirty lacrosse student-athletes were also named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team.

In recent years, Miller has helped St. John’s climb to national relevance while posting record-breaking campaigns in 2012 and 2013. The 2013 campaign was the most successful year in program history as St. John’s finished 9-4 (3-3 BIG EAST), posting the most wins since program reinstatement in 2005 and the second-most ever for a lacrosse team in University history.

Since Miller’s arrival in Queens in 2007, six St. John’s players have been selected in the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft and his student-athletes have garnered such distinctions as Tewaaraton National Player of the Year nominee, USILA All-America and All-BIG EAST first team selection, NCAA statistical champion, BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winner.

Having coached ten full seasons for St. John’s, Miller is now tied with Villanova’s Michael Cor-rado as the longest tenured coaches in the BIG EAST Conference.

The 2015 campaign welcomed one promotion and one new addition to Miller’s coaching staff. In September, Coach Miller announced the addition of former Lafayette College head coach and 2010 Patriot League Coach of the Year Terry Mangan to his staff as an assistant coach. Mangan brought more than 20 years of collegiate coaching experience to the St. John’s side-lines, including 10 years as a Division I head coach at Lafayette College. Mangan also spent 10 years as a college assistant coach, as well as coaching at the high school and junior high school levels. Just a few months later, in November, the Johnnies saw the promotion of top assistant coach Dan Paccione to the position of associate head coach of the Red Storm program. Pac-cione, who arrived in Queens along with Coach Miller in 2009, was previously the third-longest

tenured assistant coach in the St. John’s Athletic Department. While serving as St. John’s offen-sive coordinator and recruiting director for the past eight years, Paccione has been instrumental in returning the Red Storm lacrosse team to national relevance following program reinstatement in 2005.

Despite facing one of the toughest schedules in program history, Coach Miller and his staff man-aged to employ a balanced and successful attack. Seven different players netted at least one goal in three games last season and 11 players recorded the first points of their St. John’s careers in 2015. The balanced Red Storm attack was led primarily by two Johnnies, Stefan Diachenko and Eric DeJohn, who both garnered All-BIG EAST selections after combining for a total of 110 points.

The 2014 campaign also marked the culmination of the most successful four-year span in the Red Storm lacrosse era, with Miller’s 11-member senior class graduating with 28 wins to their names, the most since program reinstatement in 2005. Most notably, senior attackman Kieran McArdle ended a storied career with a record-breaking campaign which saw him named a Tewaaraton National Player of the Year nominee and USILA All-America second team pick for the second-consecutive year.

The 2017 season will mark Jason Miller’s 11th year as head coach of the St. John’s lacrosse program.

Miller leads a team that features an influx of incoming talent (12 student-athletes) on top of seven experi-

enced returning starters and 23 returning letterwinners. The squad will look to improve upon late season

successes last year as the Johnnies finished the year with a gritty 8-5 victory over rival Georgetown. The Red

Storm finished 2016 ranked in the top half of the BIG EAST conference for a number of statistical catego-

ries including assists per game (third), points per game (third), ground balls per game (third), man-up goals

(t-first) and man-up scoring percentage (first).

2017 RED STORM LACROSSE GAME NOTES

JASON MILLERHead Coach • 11th Season • Springfield ‘93

Before Army, Miller spent one season as an assistant coach at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where the Tigers advanced to the quarterfi-nals of the 2000 NCAA Division III tournament.

From 1997-99, Miller served as a graduate assistant at Springfield College in Massachusetts while earning his masters degree in education with a concentration in athletic administration. In 1998, Springfield captured the ECAC Division III championship. Miller spent the first two years of his coaching career at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., from 1995-97.

A native of Rochester, N.Y., Miller played defense on the Springfield College lacrosse team and graduated in 1993 with a degree in sports man-agement.

Miller and his entire family have made a commitment to education. His father, Richard, served as the President of Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., and his mother, Barbara, is a former English teacher. Miller’s wife, Mary, has been a school teacher on Long Island and in Massachusetts. The couple lives in Rockville Centre, N.Y. and has three children, son Liam (11), daughter Maggie (10) and daughter Catherine (6).

Under the tutelage of Dan Paccione, the Red Storm’s offensive coordinator, McArdle repeated as BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and conference “Triple Crown” winner as he led the league in points (5.71), goals (2.86) and assists (2.86) per game. McArdle scored a single-season program-record 40 goals in 2014 and ended the year as St. John’s all-time leader in career points, goals and assists as well as the first player in pro-gram history to record 200 goals, 100 assists and 100 goals in a career. In August 2014, after being drafted fifth overall in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft by the Florida Launch, McArdle was named MLL’s 2014 Cascade Rookie of the Year.

Also earning individual acclaim in 2014 were senior attackmen Kevin Cernuto and Ryan Fitzgerald as well as junior defenseman Mark DiFrangia, who were selected second team All-BIG EAST. Cernuto scored seven hat tricks in 2014 and finished the season with 110 career goals, second most in St. John’s history, while Fitzgerald marked his final season by recording career highs in points (33) and goals (22). DiFrangia ranked second in the BIG EAST and 10th nationally in caused turnovers per game at 1.86. In all, five different Red Storm players were recognized by the BIG EAST with weekly awards in 2014 and seniors McArdle, Cernuto and Fitzgerald were selected to play in the annual DI/DII North-South All-Star game.

Coach Miller has overseen a program in recent years that has excelled academically in addition to its athletic successes. In both 2013 and 2012, the BIG EAST Conference recognized the St. John’s lacrosse team with a Team Academic Excellence Award, given yearly to the team that posts the highest collective grade-point average in its respective conference sport. During that two-year span, the team’s cumulative 3.13 (2013) and 3.14 (2012) GPA ranked the highest of all seven BIG EAST member schools. The Red Storm also placed 28 student-athletes on the BIG EAST All-Academic Team for 2013-14, the most by any team at St. John’s, after having 18 selections in 2012-13.

The Red Storm rose to as high as No. 14/10 in the national polls during a historic 2013 campaign and on March 30 shocked the college lacrosse world by claiming a 12-10 victory over No. 1 ranked Notre Dame at the Irish’s own Arlotta Stadium. That win would be one of three against ranked opponents on the year, as St. John’s would play the role of “giant killers” throughout the season by also downing No. 7/6 Hofstra on March 19 and claiming an early season victory over No. 17/20 Yale on Feb. 23. The win over the Fighting Irish overtook the 8-7 victory over then-No. 2 Notre Dame in the BIG EAST Championship semifinals on May 3, 2012 at Vilanova Stadium for the highest victory over a ranked team in St. John’s history.

The 2012 season was also a memorable one for Miller and the Red Storm. St. John’s finished 8-7 (3-3 BIG EAST) and advanced to the inaugural BIG EAST Championship against three-time conference champion Syracuse, defeating then-No. 2 and eventual national semifinalist Notre Dame in the semifinals two days prior in a nationally televised game on ESPNU. At the time, the eight wins in 2012 was the highest total for the Red Storm since the program was reinstated in 2005. The Red Storm also finished the 2012 campaign ranked No. 20 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll marking the first time in program history that St. John’s concluded the season ranked inside the top-20.

Miller came to St. John’s after spending three seasons as the top assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts lacrosse program. While on the sidelines for the Minutemen, he worked with the defense and face-off units, helping lead the team to its first ever NCAA national title game in 2006. During the NCAA semifinal contest, the UMass defense held Maryland, one of the nation’s strongest offensive teams, to just five goals. The Minutemen’s road to the national championship game was arguably the toughest in the history of the tournament, as Massachusetts defeated No. 2 Hofstra, No. 3 Cornell and No. 4 Maryland before facing No. 1 Virginia in the final, as an unseeded contender.

Under the tutelage of Miller, two Minutemen earned All-America honors, including Jack Reid, who was a finalist for the Schmeisser Award as the nation’s top defenseman. Reid was a first round pick in the Major League Lacrosse Draft in June 2006. He was also the first first team All-Amer-ica defenseman in UMass history.

Prior to his time at Massachusetts, Miller coached at the United States Military Academy from 2000-03, where he helped lead the Black Knights to a 24-20 record in three seasons. During that stretch, Army won two Patriot League titles and earned a NCAA Tournament berth in 2003 for the first time since 1997. Miller learned under one of the best mentors in the collegiate game’s history as he assisted National Lacrosse Hall of Famer, Jack Emmer, the NCAA’s all-time win leader with 326 career victories.
