2018 MARQUETTE WOMEN’S LACROSSE GAME NOTES

HEAD COACH MEREDITH BLACK

The 2018 season marks the sixth for Meredith Black at Marquette. She was named the first head coach in Marquette women’s lacrosse history on Feb. 4, 2011.

Black took over the Marquette women’s lacrosse program prior to the 2012 season and oversaw its transformation into NCAA Division I varsity status before leading it into its first season in 2013. The Golden

Eagles went 2-15 during their inaugural season against a schedule that included six IWLCA ranked opponents.

The 2017 season saw the offense take another step forward. Despite a 6-11 overall record with a 4-5 mark in BIG EAST play, the team scored 42 more goals than in 2016 and raised the scoring average by more than five goals per game over the last two seasons.

A big factor in all of that was the production of senior attacker Julianna Shearer, who set numerous all-time program records including the single-season scoring mark with a BIG EAST-leading 55 goals. Shearer joined Grace Gabriel (unanimous selection) on the BIG EAST First Team and the All-Great Lakes Region Second Team, while Allison Lane earned all-league honors for the second consecutive year as a second team selection.

The women’s lacrosse program continues as a shining example in the community for the Marquette athletic department, volunteering countless hours and continuing to raise funds in an inspiring effort in the fight against pancreatic cancer. Since 2013, the program has raised nearly $50,000 for the organization.

In addition, the Marquette women’s lacrosse team was presented the IWLCA Team Awareness award in 2017, which recognizes outstanding contributions by one team from each division on their campus and in the local community. In 2017, MU recorded the most hours of community service hours (671.5 hours), spanning more than 20 service projects, than any team in Division I during the 2016-17 academic year.

During her playing career at Notre Dame, Black helped the Fighting Irish to the first two NCAA Championship appearances in school history in 2002 and 2004. She was also the school’s first student-athlete to be named an IWLCA First Team All-American in 2004, while setting the then-Notre Dame single-season scoring mark with 74 points on 46 goals and 28 assists. Black led ND to the NCAA Tournament that season and became the first ND player nominated for the Tewaaraton Award, honoring the nation’s top player.

She was also a two-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection (2003 and 2004) and was named the BIG EAST Attack co-Player of the Year in 2004.

The former Meredith Simon married Adam Black in October of 2010 and the couple has one daughter, Juliet, who was born in January of 2015.

OFFENSE SETS THE PACE• For the second time in three games, Marquette broke the single-game record for goals in following a 23-15 win over Niagara on March 3. It surpassed the previous-high of 22 goals set in a win over Stetson just six days prior. Prior to that, MU’s highest scoring output was 20 goals, accomplished in wins over Kennesaw State and Villanova during the 2017 season.• The current scoring trend during the team’s current five-game (4-1) stretch is quite impressive. MU is averaging 17.8 goals per game. Marquette is on pace for a remarkable 252 goals scored in 2018, which would shatter last year’s record-breaking season of 219 goals.• MU is outscoring opponents, 104-89 (+15), through seven games this season.

DRAW CONTROLS RECIPE FOR SUCCESS• MU has improved their draw controls average from 8.65 draws per game in 2015 - last in the BIG EAST - to a whopping 14.71 in 2017, which ranked second in the league and 15th in the nation. So far this season, the Golden Eagles rank fourth in the country (17.29 draws/game).• Additionally, the Golden Eagles have boasted the BIG EAST’s leader in draws per game in each of the past two seasons. Last season, Grace Gabriel set the Marquette record with 81 total draws and led the league with 5.67 draws per game following a 2016 campaign that saw Allison Lane lead the BIG EAST with 3.43 draws per contest.• This season, Lane and Gabriel are tied with 37 draws apiece through seven games, ranking tied for second in the BIG EAST and 38th-nationally.

AMONG THE NATION’S ELITE• Marquette leads the BIG EAST and ranks fourth in the country with 17.29 draw controls per game. MU recorded a whopping 24 in a record-breaking win over Central Michigan on Feb. 16.• The offense overall ranks 17th in scoring (14.86 goals per game), while ranking 12th in points per game (21.57) thanks to an average of 6.71 assists per contest, which is 13th in the country.• Individually, Grace Gabriel’s 26 goals scored ranks third in the country behind Sam Apuzzo of Boston College, who boasts 37 goals already. Gabriel, along with Riley Hill, rank tied for 13th-nationally with 29 points scored. Hill’s 15 assists rank sixth in the country.

HOME SWEET DOME• The Golden Eagles are off to a fast home start in the Valley Dome with a 4-0 record, outscoring opponents, 79-44, with an average of 19.75 goals per contest.• Marquette features a program-record nine home games in 2018, which is three more than last year and one more than its previous high of eight back in 2016 when it went 5-3 at Valley Fields. With non-conference play finished at home, MU looks ahead to five BIG EAST opponents set to make their way to Milwaukee, beginning with Cincinnati on March 18.

HILL OFF TO GREAT START IN 2018• Senior Riley Hill is off to a tremendous start to the season. Her 15 assists trails UConn’s Grace Nolan by one for the BIG EAST lead, and ranks sixth-nationally. Her 29 points is tied with Gabriel for the team-lead and ranks third in the conference and 13th-nationally.• She garnered BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll accolades in back-to-back weeks (Feb. 20; Feb. 27), while becoming the fifth member of the 100-career point club at Marquette following a seven-point performance against Stetson. She joined Hayley Baas (‘16), Claire Costanza (‘17), Julianna Shearer (‘17) and Amanda Bochniak (‘17) in the exclusive group. • The West Islip, NY, native needed just one point entering the Stetson game and recorded seven. She followed it up with an eight-point performance in a win over Niagara (March 3) and now has 116 career points on 68 goals and 48 assists.
