The National IllnessMany Republican leaders are leery

about having their name attached to the GOP’s replacement for Obam-acare, a health care overhaul they have demonized since it was passed seven years ago. But they’re having a devil-ish time coming up with one of their own that doesn’t make things worse.

It’s hard to blame them for preferring not to be identified with their Ameri-can Health Care Act, which is the official title of their slapped-together replacement. They have to come up with something now that they have a lock on our government. After all, they promised incessantly to repeal the Affordable Care Act. In fact, they are actually repealing overall about a cen-tury’s worth of progress, but let’s focus on how they are gutting health care.

This concoction was prepared under the guidance of House Speaker Paul Ryan, who is really into arcane policy. He’s also into maintaining the myth that there are ways to deliver health care in the United States, given our bought-and-paid-for politicians, that are more effective and less expensive than Obamacare. So he’s come up his own convoluted plan. Apparently he doesn’t want it to be called “Ryan-care,” but it is his baby, so how about something like the Speaker’s Con-trivance for Access to Medical care: SCAM?

It is a scam. While it’s presented as a more effective approach, it really provides health care coverage to fewer people and will be more expensive with most of the financial benefits going to the wealthy.

But that seems to be the direction they are heading government-wide. Washington is now a conservative’s paradise. Plans are being developed to cripple nearly all domestic programs, the ones that have been fought for over decades, the ones that provide food and shelter for those who need such things. Meanwhile, the regulations that often are the only barrier to stop the greedy from stealing even more are being shredded.

Much is being made about the Trump administration’s coziness with Rus-sia, a ruthless adversary of the United States. As dangerous as Vladimir Putin’s apparatus is, the bigger dan-ger might be from the many operating parts of Donald Trump’s government.

What’s equally pathetic is watching the opposition dither. We all recognize the ridiculous bungling that marked the Democrats’ election campaigns, but it’s also obvious that they learned absolutely nothing from their dismal failures. They’re still running around, crashing into each other with their slapstick turf battles. Even when they do draw blood on egregious issues, like the Russia connection, they fail to follow up in effective ways.

Worst of all, Donald Trump, as presi-dent, has shown himself to be a buf-foon largely surrounded by extremist incompetents. Have Democrats been able to exploit that? Not really. The only accountability that President Twitter has had to endure comes from the media and the courts, because nei-ther has been intimidated by his hate-ful bluster. But even those institutions have been splattered by his mindless mudslinging.

Millions of Americans continue to passionately support Trump, deter-mined to exact revenge on his politi-cal enemies, those they see as “elitist.” They are so angry that they are blind to the fact he is acting against their inter-ests. There is no health care plan for this pervasive national sickness, and no sign of recovery.

The Worst Argument for Trumpcare

Of all the arguments to make for repealing and replacing Obamacare, the very worst is that people don’t need health insurance.

Yet this is a Trump administration talking point. White House press sec-retary Sean Spicer recently told report-ers, “When we get asked the question, ‘How many people are going to get covered?’ that’s not the question that should be asked.” Pressed on the mer-its of the bill by George Stephanopou-los on ABC’s “This Week,” Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney shot back, “You’re worried about getting people cov-ered.” As if that’s a woeful mistake.

This is a strange rhetorical tack for officials in an administration led by a president who pledged to cover every-one. Nor is it substantively or political defensible. Repealing and replacing Obamacare will require every ounce of persuasiveness that Republicans can muster, especially with the Con-gressional Budget Office now estimat-ing that under Trumpcare, 14 million fewer people will be insured in 2018. The early signs aren’t encouraging.

It is true that health insurance isn’t a panacea. There is an academic debate about whether having health insurance leads to longer lives, and all sorts of factors besides insurance affect health and the quality of medical care (geog-raphy, for instance, can have more of an impact on care than whether some-one is insured).

Still, there is abundant evidence of the benefits of insurance. Research has found that Romneycare in Massachu-

setts improved measures of physical and mental health. A Rice University study of the Houston area found that people with insurance report being in better health than those who lack it. If nothing else, insurance is protection against catastrophic health expenses and provides a sense of security.

Republicans obviously shouldn’t accept the premises of their detractors. By all means, they should hit the dubi-ous methodology of the CBO, which vastly overestimated how many people would be covered on the Obamacare exchanges in the first place. And they should point out Obamacare’s manifest failings, including an overreliance on the deeply flawed Medicaid program and insurance exchanges that are shaky at best (the executive of Aetna recently said they are in a “death spiral”).

But the best response to criticisms that Trumpcare doesn’t cover enough people is simple and more fundamen-tal — to get the coverage numbers up. If the headline-grabbing numbers from the CBO don’t prompt the GOP to realize this, nothing will. Mak-ing the tax credit in the Republican plan more generous further down the income scale would be a start. Presi-dent Trump’s promises about univer-sal coverage aren’t achievable, but to lurch in the other direction and dismiss the significance of health insurance is politically poisonous.

At its best, the Trump phenomenon pointed to a GOP more grounded in the economic realities of working-class life. It is remarkable, then, that the first major legislative priority out of the box is being sold, in part, in ste-reotypically Republican terms, and by Trump’s own team.

Before going further down this road, they should think about why Trump, with his keen gut-level political instinct, never told audiences or inter-viewers that he’d be fine with fewer people having insurance, and adjust their rhetoric and their plan accord-ingly.

MOMENTS IN TIME

Find out what went down this week in history with this

summary of important national and world events.

• On April 5, 1792, George Washing-ton exercises the first presidential veto of a Congressional bill, which pro-posed a new plan for dividing seats in the House of Representatives. Wash-ington decided that the bill would have resulted in a higher number of repre-sentatives than that proscribed by the Constitution.

• On April 3, 1860, the first Pony Express mail, traveling by horse and rider relay teams, simultaneously leaves St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sac-ramento, California. Ten days later, the westbound rider arrived in Sac-ramento, beating the eastbound mail packet by two days.

• On April 8, 1916, at the Boulevard Race in Corona, California, an early racing car careens through a barrier and into a crowd after a wheel breaks, killing the driver and two others. “Wild Bob” Burman had previously set a world speed record for hitting 129 mph.

• On April 7, 1920, Indian sitar leg-end Ravi Shankar is born in India. Shankar’s “discovery” by the Beatles’ George Harrison in 1965 made him a household name around the world and changed the music sound of the ‘60s.

• On April 4, 1933, a dirigible crash-es in New Jersey, killing 73 people in one of the first air disasters in history. The Akron was the largest airship built in the United States.

• On April 6, 1970, Sam Sheppard, a doctor convicted of murdering his pregnant wife in a trial that caused a media frenzy in the 1950s, dies of liver failure. After a decade in prison, Shep-pard was freed following a re-trial. His story is rumored to have inspired the television series “The Fugitive.”

• On April 9, 1987, U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz states that he is “damned angry” about possible Soviet spy activity in the American embassy in the Soviet Union. Soviet officials called the espionage charges “dirty fabrications.”

STRANGE BUT TRUE

By Samantha WeaverA compendium of weird and wonderful factoids.

• It was the 32nd president of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, who made the following sage observa-tion: “Government by organized mon-ey is just as dangerous as government by organized mob.”

• You might be surprised to learn that Helen Keller, best known as the first blind and deaf person to earn a bach-elor’s degree, loved performing. She spent years on vaudeville tours, and in 1919 she starred in “Deliverance,” a silent film about her life.

• In the Canadian town of Churchill, Manitoba, most people don’t lock their car doors. The primary motivation for this practice isn’t trust (although, of course, trust is required), but public safety: A pedestrian who unexpectedly encounters a polar bear will be able to find refuge in any car along the street.

• With warmer weather approaching, you might want to consider heading to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to witness an annual rite of spring. Students at Lake Superior State University gather on (or near) the first day of spring for the annual Snowman Burning. Started in 1971 by a campus club known as the Unicorn Hunters, the tradition involves setting alight a 12-foot-tall “snowman” — usually built of recy-cled paper, wood and wire — to cel-ebrate the end of winter.

• If you haven’t listened to any new music in a while, chances are you’re over 33. Those who study such things say that’s the age at which Americans would rather stick to what they know than try out new tunes.

• If winter seems to be dragging on endlessly, be glad you don’t live on Uranus; there, winter lasts 21 years.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Be careful about doing someone a favor when you don’t know the full story behind the request. Don’t rely on someone’s unsubstantiated assuranc-es. Insist on all the facts before you act.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That workplace problem still needs your attention before you finally can close the book on it. Meanwhile, a long-anticipated reunion gets closer to becoming a happy reality.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might be demanding more from others than they can give. Best advice: Have a long and frank talk to determine what the facts are. Tensions should abate as the week winds down.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Aspects are favorable throughout this week for making contacts that could be important to your career plans. Meanwhile, an old friend offers the advice you’re seeking.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s time to stop licking your wounds from past mistakes. Get up and get going toward your future. Loyal friends will be there to help the Lion get back into rip-roar-ing shape.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Take time out to go over what’s expected of you before you begin your new project. Otherwise, you run the risk of pushing yourself harder than you need to.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An unusual request could put you in an awkward position. Best advice: Deal with it immediately. The longer you delay, the more difficult it will be to get out of it.

SCORPIO (October 23 to Novem-ber 21) You should feel recharged and ready for whatever your workaday world holds for you. The same posi-tive energy spills over into your per-sonal relationships.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A prospect might be less than it appears to be. Like the Archer in your sign, you always aim for the truth. And this is no time to set-tle for less than full disclosure.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Start doing some seri-ous thinking about a career move that could entail more than just changing job sites. Some lifestyle changes also might be involved.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to Feb-ruary 18) With tensions easing at the workplace, a more positive environ-ment once again encourages the free flow of ideas so typical of the always-innovative Aquarian.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Show some of that usually hid-den steel-strong Piscean backbone, and stand up for yourself if you hope to make a case for that promotion you know you deserve.

BORN THIS WEEK: You enjoy doing new things and staying ahead of the crowd. You would make a fine sports coach or military leader.

Cat’s Bad Breath Defies Treatment

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Sheena” has had horrible bad breath for the past six months, and nothing seems to help. She is almost 14 years old, spayed and in good health. I supplement her diet occasionally with a pill — brewer’s yeast and garlic — crushed up in her food. I also use special dental-care dry foods and dental-care treats. I brush her teeth (when she lets me) and massage her gums. I also put parsley in her wet food occasionally. What else can I try? —Deborah W., via email

DEAR DEBORAH: From your email it appears that Sheena sees the vet regularly, which is important for senior pets in particular.

While bad breath (halitosis) often is due to dental problems like gingivi-tis — where bacteria builds up in the mouth around the gums and contrib-

utes to a foul odor — other conditions like diabetes, digestive disorders, cancer and even sinus inflammation have bad breath as a symptom. So make sure cats with chronic halitosis get a complete exam to rule out other underlying issues.

As for home solutions to simple halitosis: You’re doing all the right things. However, as Sheena ages, her immune system might make her more vulnerable to gum disease. Keep it up, especially massaging her gums and trying to brush her teeth. Instead of a brush, you could try swiping her teeth with a cotton ball or very soft cloth soaked in warm water, a gentle swipe from the gum line downward.

Additionally, be careful with the amount of brewer’s yeast and garlic you give her daily, because garlic is toxic to cats. Follow the right dosage for her weight.

Reverse Mortgages: Be Wary, Do HomeworkWhile in a very narrow set of cir-

cumstances a reverse mortgage can be a benefit in retirement, this path is not for everyone.

The way a reverse mortgage works is that a company gives you money based on the equity in your home, your age and the value of the home. The money doesn’t have to be paid back until you sell the house, move away or die. Your financial situation will be reviewed to make sure you can pay insurance, property taxes and mainte-nance on the house on your monthly income. If your loan is approved, you can expect a monthly sum.

However, there are sad tales every-where from people who didn’t under-stand all the potential pitfalls of reverse mortgages. The loan can be called for any number of reasons: fail-

ure to pay property taxes or insurance premiums, not maintaining the prop-erty and more.

Beware if only one of you is age 62 or older, and if that spouse is not listed on the deed. If only one of you signs for the loan, the other could be forced to move out of the home after the death of the signer, with the home being sold or foreclosed. Since 2014 the “non-borrowing spouse” has more protections, but there are time limits to establishing the right to stay in the home.

As a protection, you’ll be required to attend counseling to make sure you know about reverse mortgages. Don’t stop there, however. Get expert advice before you begin. To process the loan, only use a Certified Reverse Mortgage Professional.

Go online to the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association web-site (www.reversemortgage.org) and read how a reverse mortgage works, especially the Your Roadmap step-by-step information and the Reverse Mortgage Self-Evaluation.

Best bet: If you have any alternative to increasing your retirement income, use that option instead of a reverse mortgage.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Vanishes After 35 Years

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 77-year-old man in good health except for irritable bowel syndrome for 35 years. Six months ago, I start-ed taking two low-dose aspirins dai-ly as a preventive, and since then all IBS symptoms have disappeared. Stools and frequency are now nor-mal and without any intense cramp-ing, gas or urgency, which I had for all those years. Frankly, I’m pleas-antly shocked, since I thought IBS had no cure. I take no other medi-cations or supplements, so it seems likely that the aspirin has alleviated or maybe cured my IBS. I thought other readers might be interested. Any thoughts? — B.C.

ANSWER: Yours is a very unusual but not unheard of response to aspirin. Most people with IBS find that aspirin and other anti-inflammatories worsen IBS symptoms. I have read of others who have the same response you seem to, however.

Aspirin remains controversial as a preventive in people without heart disease, but I believe the benefits out-weigh the risks in people at high risk for heart disease, even if they are undi-agnosed. Always speak with your doc-tor before beginning a course of aspi-rin, even if it’s low-dose.

***DEAR DR. ROACH: I have taken

the same dosage of Synthroid for several years. Since this dose suc-cessfully maintains my thyroid lev-el, is it still necessary for me to have my bloodwork done once a year, or could I either stop having blood-work done or have the test per-formed every other year? — R.M.

ANSWER: In general, the dose of replacement thyroid remains roughly constant over the long term. Howev-er, the dose may need to be adjusted for several reasons, including weight change, other medication use, change in absorption due to gastrointestinal developments or pregnancy. Also, even normal aging alters the metabo-lism of thyroid hormone, so I’d rec-ommend continuing to check levels once yearly at a minimum.

The booklet on thyroid disorders provides insight into the various forms and treatment of this disease. Read-ers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 402W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipi-ent’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

***DEAR DR. ROACH: Several

weeks ago, I contracted a bad cold with much congestion.

I have received an antibiotic plus nasal spray, and most of the con-gestion is gone. I have no pain. My concern is that my ears are still partially blocked. I can clear them by pinching my nose and blowing, such as one does in an aircraft, but I must do this frequently. I am wor-ried about hearing damage. I don’t know what else to do. — R.F.

ANSWER: The Eustachian tube connects your middle ear with the back of the throat and equalizes the pressure in your ear. It is common for congestion to linger. Fortunately, it does not permanently damage hear-ing, and usually goes away by itself. Decongestants can help, but do not use a decongestant spray such as Afrin (oxymetazoline) for more than three days.

to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column when-ever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbma-mall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Porcelain Doll

Q: I have a little porcelain doll that was given to me about 30

years ago. I have looked in a num-ber of doll books to try to identify and get the value of it, but have not been able to find anything. Can you help me? — Cyndy, Barre, Vermont

A: Identifying dolls can be frus-trating, since so many were

made and many of the manufacturer’s marks are similar. One of the better doll books is the “Blue Book: Dolls & Values” by Jan Foulke and pub-lished by Holly House Books. This reference has been called the bible of doll collecting, and you might be able to find your doll referenced in it. If that fails, perhaps you might want to contact an expert. Sara Bernstein might be able to help you. Her contact is 732-536-4101, and www.sarabern-steindolls.com. There are more than 2,000 dolls referenced at this website.

***

Q: I have a salesman sample of a Kerr blue enamel wood-

burning range. It is in good condi-tion except that the temperature gauge is missing. How much is it worth, and where can I sell it? — Marvis, Albuquerque, New Mexico

A: Have you contacted antiques dealers in your area? That

would be my first thing to do. Richard

Richardson also might be able to help you, since he is an expert in stoves and related items. His address is Good Time Stove Company, P.O. Box 306, Goshen, MA 01032. When contact-ing dealers and experts referenced in this column, it is always good man-ners to enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Be patient when waiting for a reply.

***

Q: I bought a 6-inch ruler with a black velvet sleeve at a

yard sale about 20 years ago. It was made by Tiffany & Company and is sterling. I think it might be part of a set. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. — Cliff, Hartford, Illinois

A: Throughout the 1940s and ‘50s, Tiffany & Company

offered desk sets in their catalogs, and I think you are probably correct when you suggest it is part of a set. It is impossible for me to place a value on it. My suggestion is to show it to several dealers for their opinion.

Preschoolers Create Art Michelangelo-Style

What child doesn’t love to create art using colorful pencils, paper and pots of paint? As they grow, watch their enthusiasm blossom while they develop new tech-niques and get inspired by one another and the great masters. Yes, art-ists like Michelangelo.

Here’s a fun, unusu-al artsy activity to inspire your kids to consider art from an entirely new vantage point when they lie on their back under a chair and draw Michelangelo-style.

First, talk to your children about Michelangelo and how it took him years (1508-1512) to paint the ceil-ing of the Sistine Chapel in the Vati-can in Rome. Thumb through pages in an art book from the library, or grab some images of the Sistine Cha-pel online to show them examples of one of the most famous painted inte-rior spaces in the world.

Here’s where the kids shine. Explain how Michelangelo would lie on his back on a scaffold facing the ceiling, and paint and paint and paint. In dim light. In the heat. In the cold.

Then pull over a kitchen chair and say, “Artists, it’s your turn!”

Here’s the stuff you’ll need:Kitchen chair or bench with a flat

seat, or low child’s play tableDrawing paperMasking tapeMarkers, pencils and crayons

Here’s the fun:Tape a sheet of paper to the bottom

side of a chair. Place markers, pencils and crayons

within reach to the side of the chair, then prompt your child to wiggle under.

Now go ahead, reach up and create a masterpiece.

Parenting note: The kids will no doubt be enthralled. Somehow there’s a real intimacy between the art and the creator that doesn’t quite happen out in the open with a desk

and chair. Try it. You’ll see! Tip: If your kids want to use paints,

here’s where you come in. Carefully wipe their brush off at the side of the paint container before they start painting the “ceiling.” Otherwise, they may be painting their heads!

VA Cemeteries Earn Top Rankings

The Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration (NCA) has bested corporations and federal agencies in a survey of cus-tomer satisfaction — for the sixth time. Since 1999, the government has used American Customer Satisfaction Index methods to gauge satisfaction with agencies.

Here is the most important stat this year: NCA was ranked at 96 points out of a possible 100, the highest score in public and private sectors, and 32 points above the average of 68 for federal agencies. (As a compari-son, the IRS received 58 points for individual paper filers and 67 points for small business and self-employed filers. The Weatherization Assistance Program of the Department of Energy netted 67 points.)

The National Cemetery Administra-tion was scored on maintenance of the national cemeteries, customer service and respectfulness of the service and interment. The customer service score was the highest since the survey first began and next-of-kin respondents indicated a willingness to recommend NCA to others.

Burial in a VA cemetery is open to those who meet the eligibility require-ments for minimum active-duty ser-vice, were discharged under other than dishonorable conditions and more. Spouses and minor children may be eligible, even if the service member or veteran is still alive. The VA provides headstones or markers, U.S. flag, opening and closing the grave and perpetual care of the site.

For the complete list of eligibil-ity requirements, go to www.cem.va.gov/burial_benefits/eligible.asp. Note the extra information links down the left side of the page.

The VA recently started providing pre-need eligibility determinations for early planning. Having this sorted out can take a burden off loved ones when the time comes. To apply, you’ll need VA Form 40-10007, available on the www.cem.va.gov website, along with your DD214 or similar docu-mentation.

• “Here’s my tip: Fasten all buttons, snaps, fasteners and zippers on your clothes before washing and drying. It will help them keep their shape. Turn socks insides out, too. It will help pre-vent them from getting fuzzballs.” — M.W. in Saskatchewan, Canada

• “If you are training a puppy or your fur baby has an accident on the carpet, here’s how to prevent a reoccurrence in the same spot: Blot up urine, then saturate the spot with club soda. Allow it to sit for five minutes, then blot with paper towels.” — S.S. in Arkansas

• “In this day of recycling and reus-ing, before I discard an item, I look to see if any part of it can be reused. I removed wire from a broom that can now be used to hang a picture on the wall. I also remove any reusable screws or nails from items I toss. I put them in plastic jars.” — B.B. in Maine

• Here’s one for hamster owners out there, from C.H. in Utah: “If your dwarf hamster makes much noise when running in its wheel (especially metal wheels), just lube it with a little olive oil. Just a drop or two will make the wheel turn smoothly and silently, without posing any harm to the little ones in case they lick it.

• “Put battery-operated lights on each wall in the main rooms for when there are power outages.” — M.W. in Iowa

• W.T. from “The Road” (he’s an RV traveler) is looking for suggestions to remove the smell from the lid of glass jars to make them reusable — say, sal-sa jars or peanut butter jars. If you have a solution for W.T., send it to me at:

Discovering Dr. CarverDr. George Washington Carver is

one of America’s most famous scien-tists. His work at Tuskegee University in Alabama included groundbreak-ing research on plant biology that brought him to national prominence. Dr. Carver’s scientific expertise made him one of the most famous African-Americans and one of the best-known black intellectuals of his time.

Many of his early experiments focused on the development of new uses for crops such as peanuts, sweet potatoes, black-eyed peas, soybeans and pecans to replenish soil depleted by plant-ing cotton. The hun-dreds of products he invented include plas-tics, paints and dyes, and created a new source of revenue for Southern farmers.

Carver also worked as a consultant for Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company. Ford worked with Dr. Carver to find ways to use alternative crops such as peanuts and soybeans to produce a substitute for gasoline through the production of ethanol (or grain alcohol). In 1942, Ford dis-played a car with a lightweight plastic body made from a formula Dr. Carver developed from soybeans.

Carver studied several plants, but is best known for his work with peanuts. He also developed a soothing oint-ment and massage treatment using peanut oil that he called Carvoline. Carvoline brought relief to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and many others suffering from polio or limb pain. President Roosevelt traveled to Tuskeegee University to personally

thank Dr. Carver.Carver studied this legume because

he wanted to help poor cotton farmers in the South improve their depleted soil. He found that peanuts also are an inexpensive protein food crop. Carver discovered more than 300 uses for peanuts, although he didn’t invent peanut butter, he used peanuts to cre-ate everything from shaving cream and shampoo to wood stains and plastics.

Carver died in 1943 at the age of 78. His epitaph reads: “He could have added fortune to fame, but caring for neither, he found happiness and honor in being helpful to the world.”

Dry-roasted peanuts are an excel-lent source of magnesium, niacin and potassium. They’re also a good source of zinc, copper, thiamine and phosphorus, are high in fiber and contain iron, pantothenic acid and

vitamin B-6. Peanuts are high in fat — mostly unsaturated fat, which is a healthier choice than the saturated fat found in meat.

A half-ounce of peanuts or tree nuts or a tablespoon of peanut butter counts as the equivalent to 1 ounce from the protein group. Most older children and adults need approxi-mately 4 to 6.5 ounces from this food group each day. It’s also a good source of protein for children who don’t like to eat meat.

Try my recipe for Asian-Style Peanut Noodles for a new way to incorporate peanuts into your diet.

ASIAN-STYLE PEANUT NOODLES

1 pound whole wheat spaghetti

2 teaspoons olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger (or 1 teaspoon ground ginger) 1/4 cup smooth peanut butter 3/4 cup milk (whole, 2 percent, skim or soy are all fine), divided 1 (12 ounce) package broccoli slaw 1 cup frozen green peas 3 tablespoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper Chopped roasted peanuts, for garnish (optional)

1. Cook spaghetti according to package directions. Be sure to reserve at least 1/2 cup of the cooking liquid when you drain it.

2. Meanwhile, heat a large saute pan over medium heat and add olive oil. Add garlic and fresh ginger, and saute for 30 seconds.

3. Add peanut butter and 1/2 cup of the milk; stir well to combine and melt the peanut butter.

4. Add broccoli slaw and stir to get it well-coated. Reduce the heat to low and let simmer for 3-4 minutes, until broccoli slaw is softened.

5. Add frozen peas and soy sauce, salt, pepper, cayenne and the remain-ing 1/4 cup milk. Stir well to com-bine. Let simmer for another 2 to 3 minutes.

6. Add the spaghetti to the pan once it’s cooked, along with 1/4 cup of reserved cooking water to loosen the mixture and help the sauce adhere to the noodles, more as needed. Serve warm or cold with a wedge of lime.

Best Glazed MeatloafAdding ground turkey meat and

oats to the traditional ground-beef base makes this meatloaf lighter and healthier, but it’s just as hearty and comforting as any old-fashioned rec-ipe. 1 cup quick-cooking oats 1/2 cup fat-free (skim) milk 1 medium onion Salt Pepper 1 large red pepper 3 cloves garlic 2 teaspoons lower-sodium soy sauce 1/4 cup ketchup 2 tablespoons ketchup 1 pound 93-percent lean ground beef sirloin 1 pound ground turkey breast 3 medium carrots 2 tablespoon spicy brown mus- tard

A SELF-INFLICTED INJURY

In this deal from a club duplicate, only one North-South pair made four spades even though the contract was unstoppable with correct play.

At most tables, the bidding went as shown, and West led the jack of clubs. Declarer put up dummy’s king in order to try a spade finesse, losing the eight to West’s queen. A second club was taken by the ace, and the king of spades then lost to East’s ace. East returned a third club, ruffed by South with the nine.

At this point, virtually all the declar-ers drew West’s last trump with the

jack and attempted to run the dia-monds. But when East showed out on the second diamond, the contract went down the drain. Although South could ruff a fourth round of diamonds in dummy, he would have no entry to the closed hand to collect his last two diamonds. So, after cashing the A-K-Q of diamonds, these declarers next led a heart toward dummy and finished down one, losing two hearts and two spades.

At one table, though, South saw a way to give himself an extra chance if the diamonds broke 4-1. After ruff-ing the club return at trick five, he reasoned that if the diamonds were divided 3-2, no harm could come from cashing the A-K before drawing the last trump. If both opponents fol-lowed suit to the A-K, he could then cash the jack of spades before running the diamonds. If the second diamond happened to get ruffed, the contract was doomed anyway.

The advantage of this approach can be seen in the actual deal. When declarer cashed the two top diamonds, East showed out, but was unable to ruff. South then led a low diamond and ruffed it in dummy to establish the suit. Dummy’s remaining trump was led to the jack, and the rest of the diamonds were run. West got his heart trick at the end, and South got a well-deserved top score.

HOLLYWOOD — What does earn-ing a best-picture Oscar nomination mean? Here are grosses, after the Oscars, for the nine films nominat-ed: “La La Land” benefited the most (thanks to best actress Emma Stone and best director Damien Chazelle’s wins), vaulting $28 million to $397 million. “Hidden Figures” won no big awards, but still climbed $23 million to $195 million.

“Moonlight’s” best picture and Mahershala Ali’s supporting-actor win afforded it a $16 million surge to $42 million. “Lion,” with best supporting nods for Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman, saw a $14 million boost to $103 million. “Hacksaw Ridge,” with Andrew Garfield and director Mel Gibson’s nominations, had a bump of $11 million to $175 million. “Manchester by the Sea,” despite Casey Affleck’s best actor and director Kenneth Lonergan’s original screenplay wins, rose only $8 million to $67 million, and Viola Davis’ supporting actress win didn’t help “Fences” beyond a $2.5 million rise to $61 million.

“Arrival” and “Hell and High Water” (with Jeff Bridges supporting actor nomination), are out of theatres but had their DVD and Blu-Ray sales elevated from the attention. The real reason for having nine best-picture nominees instead of five is because it pays to advertise, and the Oscars have the biggest audience to do that!

***Host Jimmy Kimmel, perpetuat-

ing his “fake news” feud with Matt Damon, claimed, on the Oscars, that Matt’s film “The Great Wall” was a flop. True, it cost $150 million to make and only earned $41 million in the U.S. and Canada, but it also made $279 million in China and oth-er territories worldwide, for a total of $320 million.

***“Feud: Bette & Joan,” the campy

eight-part series on FX, takes certain liberties with what actually happened, which sometimes makes for better drama. I got this straight from Bette Davis, who explained how her feud with Joan Crawford began.

“MGM dropped Crawford’s con-tract in 1944 because they were going younger with their contract people, and she slithered over to see Jack Warner, at my studio, Warner Broth-ers, under the guise of giving her ser-vices free for “Hollywood Canteen,” the film John Garfield and I were making to benefit the Hollywood Can-teen. She managed to talk Jack Warner into a four-picture deal. My people, in the script department, always tipped me off about books bought for filming, and when I asked Jack about “Mildred Pierce,” he told me he’d promised it to Crawford. I wasn’t thrilled and was less thrilled when she won an Oscar for it.”

We’ll have more on their famous “Feud,” next time. And you thought “Family Feud” was fun!

PICKS OF THE WEEKRogue One: A Star Wars Story

(PG-13) — A band of folks who’ve been kicked around by the evil Empire join up with the Rebel Alliance to secure secret plans revealing the weak-ness of the new imperial super-weap-on. Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) lost her father (Mads Mikkelsen) when he was kidnapped and forced to engineer the Death Star. Jyn and crew — including Diego Luna as a brooding Rebel cap-tain, Donnie Yen as a blind mystic and an endearing droid (voiced by Alan Tudyk) — go on a daring-but-neces-sary mission that sets up the events of the original “Star Wars” trilogy.

As a one-off story set in the “Star Wars” universe, but adjacent to the main heroes, this story has a darker-but-still-hopeful tone, and it works. “The Force Awakens” was fun, but felt cramped for following its predeces-sors too closely. I saw a thrilling and emotional sci-fi epic, a welcome addi-tion to the “Star Wars” canon, and one that doesn’t entirely revolve around Skywalker family dysfunctions threat-ening the galaxy.

Office Christmas Party (R) — When an uptight CEO (Jennifer Aniston) plans to shut down the fail-ing branch run by her braggadocious brother (T.J. Miller), there’s only one thing to do: throw a party to woo a wealthy client, but not just any par-ty — it must be wild, “buck wild.” That’s the general logic and tone of this film. Jason Bateman and Olivia Munn also are on the party-planning committee, but fail to cut memorable characters from the blank page. SNL’s Kate McKinnon managed to get some laughs out of me as the most uncool H.R. lady ever.

With the ensemble cast, and T.J. Miller’s ongoing success with “Sili-con Valley,” I had some hope for this one. Instead, it seems like directors Will Speck and Josh Gordon figured a solid combination would be to have funny people improvising in between crazy set pieces that keep the energy up. Solid logic, but it doesn’t really come together.

The Bounce Back (PG-13) — Mat-thew Taylor (Shemar Moore) is a hunky relationship guru pushing his new book about getting over the past and starting anew (just guess what it’s called). While promoting away, gorgeous therapist Nadine (Kris-tin Peralta) calls him out, refutes his philosophies and the two statuesque beings begin an amiable public feud. It’s a conventional and cute romcom — attractive people despise each other until they realize they’re in love, a funny friend (Bill Bellamy) gives

bad advice and a precocious child or matron (in this case, Matthew’s teen daughter, played by Nadja Alaya) cupids them along.

Paterson (R) — A bus driver (Adam Driver) named Paterson, drives the Paterson bus down Paterson Avenue, central line of Paterson, New Jersey. He has a beautiful supportive wife named Laura (Golshifteh Farahani), a journal full of original poetry, and an English bulldog. Directed by Jim Jarmusch, the film follows Paterson through his daily routines, observing life and articulating the beauty of it through his poetry. While Paterson’s days follow a clear track, Laura is driv-en to constantly explore new things — baking, painting, music. There isn’t a lot of high drama, but a lot of success showing the everyday in new ways, slowing things down for a while.

Q: I read that Lacey Chabert recently had a baby. How is

she doing, and will she be taking a break from acting? — Janet Y., via email

A: The “Party of Five” and “Mean Girls” alumn did indeed just

become a new mom. She and hus-band David Nehdar welcomed Julia Mimi Bella in September. However, earlier this year, Lacey was back at work — filming the Hallmark Chan-nel’s “Moonlight in Vermont” — with 4-month-old Julia in tow. I spoke with her recently about the being on set with her daughter.

“This was my first project back as a new mom, and my baby was only 4 months old when we filmed it. We are so attached; she was with me when we were in Vancouver and then on set most days, and it was a whole new experi-ence. Being a mom and carrying the movie and still not sleeping at night. It was definitely a challenge, but so worth it. It’s like I have a whole new energy now with her. And my work has become even more important to me. I want to do stuff that she can watch later and be proud of. She brings so much joy to our lives. I’m just madly in love with her.”

Regarding the movie, which pre-mieres April 8 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Hall-mark, Lacey could relate to the busy, career-driven woman that she played: “I’ve been working since I was 7 years old. I am very driven and very ambi-tious, but especially since having a baby. The baby has really taught me to take a step back, slow down a little bit sometimes, and really just enjoy the moment. It’s great to be ambitious and it’s great to be driven, but I think there needs to be a happy balance. If you’re constantly on the go and don’t ever sit back and enjoy what’s happening, then what’s it all worth?

***

Q: I am addicted to Tom Hardy’s new series “Taboo.” Please tell

me there will be another season. — Nick B., Port St. Lucie, Florida

A: Tom Hardy himself has con-firmed that there will be an

“explosive” new season of “Taboo,” which just completed its run on FX. Season two will pick up with Delaney (played by Tom) and his ragtag group of criminals as they head over to Amer-ica. For those of you who haven’t had the chance to watch it, you can stream it for free through your cable provider or you can purchase individual epi-sodes or the entire season to stream from Amazon.

***

Q: Will there be more episodes of “Making a Murder”? — Mike

R., via email

A: A Netflix representative has confirmed that series creators

Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi are currently in Wisconsin’s Manitowac County filming for the second season. She didn’t have an exact premiere date, but she does surmise that season two should drop before year’s end.
