MOVING TOWARDS THE SOUTH AFRICA WE ALL DESERVE
WELCOME
w w w. v i s i o n 2 0 3 0 . c o . z a
SOUTH AFRICA IS AT A VERY DELICATE MOMENT IN ITS HISTORYWe have already suffered two downgrades by international ratings agencies, with another one putting us on warning. The politics of our country has gone into accusatory mode, with most people in the ruling ANC eyeing the elective conference of the party in December, where a new leadership will be elected. All political parties are also looking forward to the national elections in 2019 and positioning themselves in the best possible way.
At a time of crisis, it is important to have safeguards and a plan. The Constitution is our safeguard. The National Development Plan is our plan. The Constitution, which celebrated the 20th anniversary of its adoption last December and its implementation in February, acts as the conscience of the nation as we navigate troubled times. Yet we need to have an idea of where we are heading and the NDP is our guide.
The NDP is still the only viable plan to produce a much-improved South Africa by the year 2030. Critics have been quick to point out its shortcomings, but have not been able to come up with realistic alternatives.
The NDP was drawn up by the National Planning Commission, a group of independent experts under the leadership of former Minister of Finance and Minister of Planning, Trevor Manuel. Since the NDP was adopted almost unanimously by political parties, business and civil society in 2012, there is a perception that not much has happened.
But this is not the case. The NDP today forms the backbone of everything that government is doing. All government plans are informed by and meant to ensure the successful implementation of the NDP. Communication is the one thing that has not been up to standard. The Vision 2030 Summit and Awards is one way of plugging the information gap. Through our annual gatherings and publications, we help to promote the work done by government and the private sector, with regards to pursuing the aims of the NDP. It is important, especially in a situation where we are surrounded by frequently bad news, to inform citizens of the good things that are happening and which are moving our country forward. We hope you enjoyed the summit, and these awards, and that those making a difference in our society will feel that their work is deeply appreciated.

Entrepreneurship Development
Topic: Entrepreneurship: The Backbone of our developing economy
Session Sponsor:
Entrepreneurship Development (sponsored by PMI) – the key challenges we face in South Africa are leadership (in public and private sectors) and the structure of our economy. Does it mobilise entrepreneurship? We have a collective responsibil ity to make this work – all hands on deck – “we can meet the NDP goals”.
Training & Skills Development
Topic: Unlocking the Potential of SMEs for Radical Economic Transformation
Session Sponsor:
Training and skil ls development (sponsored by AMSCO) – this session looked at radical economic transformation and determined that we need to change the way we look at things, how we think. An integrated approach is needed to address the skil ls gap across the country and the continent – transforming the economy through the human capital lens.
TRANSFORMING OUR WORLD: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable DevelopmentHow do we transform our world by 2030 to alleviate poverty, inequality and joblessness?Five key takeaways from day 1 of the Vision 2030 Summit: 1. Collaboration, cooperation and communication are key if we are going to achieve the NDP goals. This includes the private and public sectors; employers and employees and the three tiers of government 2. To succeed we need a capable developmental state 3. Appropriate skills development and training is crucial to prepare us for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) – and the e-economy 4. ICT is an economic driver 5. The time is now we are all in this together
DAY 1 – 21 JUNE 2017
BREAKAWAY SESSIONSThe five breakaway sessions covered entrepreneurship development; training and skills development; improving economic production by investing in people; construction and economic transformation. Their key takeaways:

w w w. v i s i o n 2 0 3 0 . c o . z a
Construction Topic: Construction and Infrastructure Development as Key Contributors to Economic Growth
Session Sponsor:
Construction and infrastructure development (sponsored by Basil Read) – 2030 is only 13 years away. Time is not on our side. Planning, or lack thereof, is a key roadblock to being where we should be. Our road network is good but needs to be better. Funding is a key issue – if needs be we should borrow – South Africa has a 60% debt ratio to GDP. We need to get moving – we need to build, we can build, we need the bricks and mortar.
Economic Transformation
Topic: Transforming South Africa through Quality Education and Entrepreneurship
Session Sponsor:
Economic transformation (sponsored by Old Mutual) – we need to re-imagine education. How do we prepare people for the digital economy? Let’s include the excluded and support marginalised schools – many of which are in rural areas – in this way we will be mainstreaming the rural economy.
Improving Economic Production by Investing in People
Topic: Productivity: The Secret 2% Growth Opportunity
Session Sponsor:
Improving economic productivity by investing in people (sponsored by MMI holdings) – productive employees are essential for the realisation of Vision 2030 and a thriving economy. Ensuring productive presenteeism (when staff are both physically and mentally present because they are not stressed) means ensuring employee financial wellness. Caring for staff in good and bad times results in lasting loyalty and increased productivity. The Forbes top 100 companies are all seriously concerned about their employees – and have realised there is an interaction between financial wellness of their staff and the financial wellness of the business.

Agriculture & Rural Development
Topic: Radical Economic Transformation in Agricultural Sector
Session Sponsor:
Hosted by:

DAY 2 – 22 JUNE 2017
EXECUTION! EXECUTION! EXECUTIONThe opening address by Professor of Robotics and Megatronics, President of the African News Agency and former Deputy Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, Arthur Mutambara was a clarion call to South Africans to execute the vision of the NDP. How do we do this? How do we move from A to B? Execution is strategy and for strategy to work it must have:
1. A unique value proposition 2. Distinctive activities linked to the value proposition 3. Trade-offs – what will you do differently? What will you give up to achieve your strategy? 4. Mutually reinforcing activities which enable delivery 5. Long term continuity – you need continuous improvement but the direction will not change
The NDP must be linked to the continental vision – Agenda 2063. We have 1.1 billion Africans – a great market
for Russia, China and the US. We need to think continentally. Think Africa!
The keynote address by Dr Mathews Phosa took us back to our foundations and our roots – the Freedom Charter. He emphasised the need to work together to solve our problems and achieve the South Africa we all deserve.
The keynote address by Deputy Minister in the Presidency Buti Manamela detailed the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals which reflect both the NDP and Agenda 2063. A vibrant panel discussion listed the must-haves for execution of Vision 2030 – these included the reduction of the public sector into a lean agile servant leader; the alignment of business and government; a sense of patriotism; the mobilisation of SMMEs; developing the rural economy and transformation of the education system.
We are running out of time – there are only 13 years to go to ensure the eradication of poverty. Delegates left revitalised with a renewed sense of purpose – because the NDP will only work if we all pull together.

Advanced Manufacturing Breakaway Session
Topic: Aerosud Aviation - Tomorrow’s Technologies Taking Flight
Session Sponsor:
Advanced manufacturing – sponsored by AerosudThe key message that came from this session was that we have the technologies ready to implement today. South Africa is building world class products for export – and execution is the name of the game.
Healthcare
Topic: Eliminating Stumbling Blocks to Achieving Healthcare Objectives
Session Sponsor:
Healthcare – sponsored by SANBSSouth Africa has the highest degree of genetic diversity in the world. We suffer from a quadruple burden of disease and an AIDS epidemic. How do we turn these disasters into opportunities? We will become the epicentre of research in the world and if the HIV virus can be used to defeat Leukaemia then we can defeat poverty and inequality and achieve Vision 2030.
ICT
Topic: Driving SMME Development and Inclusive Economic Growth in ICT
Session Sponsor:
ICT – sponsored by SENTECHHow can we drive SMME development in ICT? We need:• A centralised database• Personalised incubators• Policy which does not inhibit growth• Collaboration• Relook at procurement policies• Research and development
Execution is about focus and follow through.
