LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
As we near the end of the Together in Mission “Though we are many, we are One cam-
paign and excitedly approach Together in Mission 2017 “Be The Light of Christ” on behalf
of the Annual Appeal staff, I want to sincerely thank you for all your untiring efforts and ded-
ication to this annual appeal.
Over the course of the last few months, I have had the pleasure of speaking with many of
you in our parish communities and have heard firsthand of your successes as well as chal-
lenges that you have encountered through the course of the year. We are very appreciative
of your patience and professionalism and ALWAYS want you to know that we LOVE hearing
from you and assisting you in every way. Heraclitus, the Greek philosopher, is quoted as say-
ing that “the only thing that is constant is change.” And I think many of you would agree that
we live in a world in which this is more apparent than ever.
With this wise adage shared, 2017 will be another fulfilling year of improved change whereby
we will continue to take steps in streamlining the data processing component of the Archdi-
ocese’s largest appeal.
The largest administrative step that Together in Mission 2016 took was the processing of
Pledge payments through a DIRECT LOCKBOX. We will continue to benefit from our trusty
Lockbox system, but we also will be embarking on receiving ALL Together in Mission Di-
rect Mail in our office to even facilitate and expedite all payments EVEN faster. Why settle
for 48 hours when we can achieve 24?
2017 is going to include some additional quantum leaps in terms of technology. For example,
the Together in Mission office is going to be enlisting Constant Contact to assist us in thank-
ing our donors at least twice through the email process: once when a pledge is established a
“thank you for your pledge” and a “thank you pledge complete” email when they have com-
pleted or paid in full their pledge.
Second, we realize that we need to make it easier for our generous donors to give. TIM will
be introducing Mobile Cause’s Text to Donate. Mobile-friendly online forms increase sub-
missions by 34%. Mobile giving will allow donors to make one-time gifts as well as pay off
their pledge on their mobile phone using their DONOR number. This is just one more effec-
tive way that TIM will make the process of paying off a pledge easy.
Finally, we are continuing to improve our database by incorporating a service to assist us in
identifying, filtering, reviewing and merging duplicate donor records on a weekly basis. Our
database will be more accurate as a result and this will potentially even decrease our postal

and printing costs not to mention collective improvement of time management.
Please know that we are here to help you at every stage of this exciting appeal and we welcome
you calling us each and every day. No question is too obvious or insignificant. I cannot stress
enough that in this time of electronic communication, the old fashion way, the telephone call,
can often be more efficient, personal and rewarding, so please consider calling us directly.
TOGETHER, we can continue to help those who are in great need and YOU are the essential
catalyst of this appeal’s success. Thank you for letting us be a partner with you in Together in
Mission.
With sincere gratitude,
Dee Smith, Director
Annual Appeals

BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENTS
February 4th & 5th Announcement Sunday
Title: Together in Mission Campaign Launch “Be the Light of Christ”
Next weekend, the Together in Mission annual appeal will launch. This a great opportunity to put your
love into action. At every Mass we will hear from an insightful speaker that will tell us about the im-
portance of sharing our gifts with others. We are in this together—the mission of helping our fellow
brothers and sister and we are all asked to share the light of Christ with others. For those of you that
have made gifts in the past, be on the lookout for a special mailing from our Archdiocesan leaders asking
you to renew your gift.
Please mail in your gift directly to the Together in Mission office to ensure that you’re counted among
those that have answered this vital call. Our parish has been tasked with raising YOUR PARISH GOAL I
am confident that each of you will prayerfully consider sharing the abundant gifts that God has shared
with each of us.
February 11th & 12th Commitment Sunday:

Title: Answer the call to shine brightly for others.
Today God calls upon each one of us to share our gifts with our brothers and sisters in Christ that are in
need. Through Together in Mission we can share our mighty deeds and give healing and faith to the
communities that simply would not be here without your support. Though our Church is large, our
strength lies not in our numbers but in our compassion and ability to respond to the call for help.
Every gift, regardless of the size, matters so long as we give what we can and answer the calling of our
faith. For those of you that have already committed to a gift, I heart fully thank you. For those of you
that have yet to make a gift this year, there is still time to participate in this vital appeal.
Together we can make sure God’s love and presence are felt by all, especially those in need. God
bless you for your generosity.

Heavenly king, we thank you
for the blessings you bestow
upon us. We pray that stewardship
may become a way of life for us so that
we can share the many gifts you have
bestowed upon. Guide us to be generous
in our thoughts and actions. We offer
you today the fruits of our labor
that they may become beacons of hope
for others. Let us be reminded of the
gift of light we received at the baptismal
font and help us to reflect that light
on to others in need.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

GETTING READY
Bringing the Campaign to Life at Your Parish
Our goal is to have 100% of parish families make a gift to Together in Mission, this requires
an enthusiastic and impassioned appeal to all parishioners.
Enlist parish volunteers to distribute and collect campaign materials during every Mass.
Prepare the materials in-pew envelopes, bulletin inserts, and pencils, should be divided
and distributed for every Mass. For easy transition between Masses, use clearly labeled
bins.
Utilize all resources to enhance the “ask”. Use, Homily notes, Altar and Bulletin an-
nouncement samples to enhance your own talking points about the campaign.
Conduct the in-pew process using the in-pew script.
Reach out to new potential donors. Invite those who specifically have never made a
gift to the campaign to do so this year.
Follow-up—submit timely batches, review your Parish Detail Reports, connect with TIM
Office staff for Parish-Based mailings and additional support.

parish and/or school speak to your parish. Or have a parishioner speak about why making
a gift to TIM is important for them.
Show the Together in Mission campaign video. (During Mass if possible, or by
showing it in the parish hall during Announcement Weekend to prepare your parishioners
for Commitment Weekend. Also consider embedding the video on your parish website.
Speak passionately about the campaign utilizing TIM-provided resources. Include your
parish’s specific 2017 goal and share with your community past results..
The Importance of the In-pew process
Everyone needs to be asked
The in-pew process is the personal invitation every attendee receives by the Pastor during
Commitment & Follow-up Weekends to participate in the campaign.
Commit to make a gift
Stress the importance that every parish family make a pledge and/or gift at the designated time

GUEST SPEAKERS
What the speaker is expected to do?
1. Connect with the parish the week before they are to speak.
2. Make sure that there is a point of contact and a meeting place upon arrival.
What the parish is expected to do for the speaker?
1. Inform the speaker when they are speak. (Preferably during the homily immediately
preceding the in-pew process)
2. Provide them with space for respite between Masses.
3. Provide them with basic essentials - including snacks, drinks, and a restroom.
While it is our goal to facilitate speakers from recipient parishes & schools for all of
our donor parishes during both Announcement and Commitment Weekends, it’s
not always possible to accommodate all parishes. Your parish can also invite a mem-
ber of your community to speak about the importance of making a gift to Together
in Mission. TIM staff can provide you with speaking notes for such a case.
The most important aspect about the in-pew process is to make sure that
someone in your parish community invites parishioners to make a gift.
during Mass using the supplied pledge envelopes. Ensure that parishioners understand that
they are able to make a pledge that they can pay over the course of several months.
It takes a village
Consider inviting those who make a pledge to step forward and deposit them into a designat-
ed basket in front of the Altar to enhance their in-pew process and make your congregation
feel reminded that they are a PART of something bigger and collectively, this goal can be
achieved.
Follow-Up Weekend is vital
Not everyone is present in the same Mass each week. To ensure that as many of your parish-
ioners participate in the campaign as possible, be sure to conduct the FULL IN-PEW process
during both Commitment & Follow-up weekends.

2. Leave before the end of the day or as agreed upon in advance.
3. Solicit gifts on behalf of their own parish and/or school.
What the parish should NOT expect:
1. Their assigned speaker to be available for BOTH the Saturday Vigil and all of Sunday.
2. The speaker to conduct the in-pew process.
What the Together in Mission staff is responsible for:
1. Assigning speakers
2. Providing training opportunities for speakers

HOMILETICS
Be the Light of Christ!
Every time scripture is proclaimed Christ speaks. The readings assigned for the 5th-7th Sundays in Ordi-nary Time leave the homilist with a wonderful preaching plan renewing our commitment to the Arch-diocesan program Together in Mission. Even when a video is presented, a guest speaker shares their story, or pledges are being asked for, a brief one to two minute homily will help the parishioners hear God’s word in light of Together in Mission.
February 5---Announcement Sunday (5th Sunday in Ordinary Time) Video Shown
Is 58:7-10 makes it clear that we are to notice the needs of others, not simply because it is a kind
thing to do, but because God commands it. Isaiah, the prophet calls us to stop looking at our own
struggles, which leads to darkness, but rather look out into the world and see the hungry, the naked,
and the homeless. Who needs our help? In serving others we are raised out of our own darkness and
become light for “other nations to see.”
According to Paul’s letter to the Corinthians (2:1-5) this is wisdom. True wisdom is not human, but
rather Christ crucified and raised. We share what we have with others not because it will help our
bank accounts or retirement plans, but because our true hope rests ultimately on Jesus. God’s wisdom
often contradicts human wisdom.
In our Gospel (Mt 5:13-16) Jesus speaks as a prophet and more. He calls his followers to be salt and light. It’s not good enough for Christians to speak only, but they also must act. Parishioners and

preachers alike become Christ’s light. Participating in the good works of Together in Mission is one way that every Catholic in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles becomes light for the world to see. How bright the light would be if everyone participated!
February 12—Commitment Sunday (6th Sunday in Ordinary Time) Guest Speaker
On this Sunday we are inviting our parishioners to make a commitment to Together in Mission. This
Sunday’s scriptures give us the foundation on which to commit.
Sir 15:15-20 reminds us that God has given us freedom to make choices. We are not puppets. We
have God’s freedom to decide what is best, but there is clearly a right way and a wrong way. “Before
man are life and death, good and evil, whichever he chooses shall be given him.” Wisdom is loving God
and making choices that are directed toward God’s justice. Sirach invites us to choose wisely!
Paul reminds us (1 Cor. 2:6-10) that Christian wisdom is mature, “not a wisdom of this age, nor of the
rulers of this age who are passing away.” Christian wisdom is knowing Christ, and doing his will.
Christian wisdom is making mature decisions based on our love of Jesus because He is our foundation.
Jesus then (Mt. 5:17-37) invites us to righteousness which “surpasses that of the scribes and Phari-sees,” who made choices based on the letter of the law. Jesus takes us beyond the letter to something deeper. Killing gives way to anger, adultery gives way to lust, false oaths give way to saying ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ Committing to Together in Mission is more than being ‘nice’ to someone in need. It is righteous wisdom. Giving to others helps us become Christ’s light!
February 19—Follow-up Sunday (7th Sunday in Ordinary Time)
Together in Mission offers Catholic parishioners a concrete way of living mature faith, by becoming
light for others. When Moses speaks to the Israelite community (Lv. 19:1-2, 17-18) he reminds them,
and us, that we are to be holy just like God, who created us, is holy. Holiness is an action, a way of
living out one’s life. Simply put, “you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” God’s holiness is not about
taking care of oneself only, but helping those in need. This is authentic love. We love because God
loves us first.
Paul points out (1 Cor. 3:16-23) that God’s creative Spirit lives within us. Through prayer we can dis-
cern God’s wisdom. Paul calls us to be worldly fools, but wise in the ways of faith. “Taking care of
number one” is considered wise by worldly standards, but not for Paul. He invites us to be fools for
Christ.
Put simply, being a fool for Christ (MT. 5:38-48) is turning the other cheek, loving one’s ene-mies, giving away both cloak and tunic, going the extra mile, and giving generously to those who ask. Jesus’s words are clear and direct. They are also hard to fulfill! Yet, step by step, through the good choices we make, by being light for others to see, we are becoming “perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

After the Speaker
The following prayer calls everyone to reflect on the importance of making a gift or a pledge to Together
in Mission.
Campaign Prayer or Petition
That we learn to be generous with the gifts that God has given us. And may we open our hearts to serve our
Catholic brothers and sisters in need through our contributions to this year’s Together in Mission appeal.
Read the In-Pew Script
Good (morning, afternoon or evening) . First, I want to thank all of you who have given generously to To-
gether in Mission in the past. It is only because of your support that the doors remain open at many of
our parishes & schools throughout the Archdiocese.
For those of you who are new to the Archdiocese or have not made a gift in the past, I hope you are struck
by the impact and the importance that your gifts can make in the lives of those supported by Together in
Mission.
I ask that everyone present here today prayerfully consider making a true offering to this campaign. Each of
us is called to share of his or her gifts with our neighbors. Your gift today becomes a beacon of hope for
others tomorrow.

Points to consider after the in-pew process
Please ensure that there is a formal process in place to collect the pledge envelopes after the in-pew process
as well as at the end of the Mass. Given that they just finished hearing about the campaign, it is important
that all gifts are collected in order to ensure that you receive a strong response from everyone present.
Here are a few examples of this process
Have ushers pass around baskets to pick up pledge envelopes directly after the in-pew process.
Place a basket in front of the altar and have parishioners drop in their pledge envelopes.
Have students in school uniforms come by and pick up the pledge envelopes from the parishioners in the
pews.
Place baskets in aisles and have parishioners drop in their offerings.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER FOLLOW-UP WEEKEND
Does the campaign end upon Follow-up Weekend, when the in-pew process has been
completed?
Answer - NO! Communicating about Together in Mission at your parish is the most effective
means by which parishioners learn about Together In Mission. It is important to make sure that
your parish continues to keep your community updated about your progress toward completing your
goals as well as inviting parishioners that have not made a gift to do so.
Effective means of communication at the parish level:
Monthly Altar Announcements are a helpful way to keep parishioners informed about the cam-
paign and your parish’s progress.
Monthly Bulletin Announcements are a great way to publicize parish goals and campaign progress.
Social Media posts & Parish Website updates allow the parishioner to find the online giving re-
sources and keep the donor engaged throughout the year.
Follow-up from the TIM Office
There are MANY steps that will need to be implemented.
Steps will include:
Sending follow-up mailings to ‘lapsed donors’,
Sending Slow Pay No Pay reminders to those with outstanding pledge balances,
Writing special thank you letters to donors that have participated in the appeal.
What is a sufficient amount of pledges?
Answer - A general rule of thumb is that a parish must secure a minimum of 110% of their goal in
pledges, as annually between 10%-15% of pledges go unfulfilled.
What if our parish does not reach our goal in pledges after Follow-up Weekend?
Answer - Contact the TIM Office for additional support. The TIM staff exists to provide the neces-
sary support for the success of ALL parishes.
How can I monitor my parish’s progress?
Answer – Given that gifts can arrive at the TIM Office in various ways, it is important that the parish
track its progress accordingly. The TIM Office prepares a Parish Detail Report for every parish and is
sent via email. It is a valuable resource that provides each parish with detailed information about donor
participation, cumulative giving (Pledges & Paid), and overall progress towards achieving your parish’s
goal.
Parish Detail Reports will be emailed weekly starting February 17th - February through April and
biweekly thereafter. This report is available in PDF format as well as in spreadsheet format.

BATCH PROCESSING
The Together in Mission office will process Direct Mail returns and batches as they are received. Each
batch is verified against the transmittal to ensure that total number of items are enclosed and that the all
amounts stipulated on the transmittals are correct. Corrections will be made on the TIM Office Use Only
section of the transmittal. (See sample in the Appendix)
If the Batch is Complete
If the batch is complete and accurate, checks are deposited and all items are processed within 2 business
days. These items will be reflected on your parish detail report.
If Changes are Needed
Parish Check
If the parish check is “short”, the TIM Office will process as many items as possible and a representative
from the TIM Office will contact the parish and return the items that represent the short fall. These
items can be included in the next batch from the parish.
If the parish check exceeds the amount represented by the pledge cards in the batch, the TIM Office will
process the remaining funds as anonymous gifts on the parish’s record.
Check Gifts
If the check is not enclosed, the TIM Office will process the gift as a pledge and inform the parish of the
pledge card(s) in question via US Mail.
Credit Card
If there are issues with the credit number, expiration date, or payment schedule, the TIM Office will con-
tact the donor directly and the gift will be booked as a pledge with no payment.
Pledges
If the donor neglected to mark the appropriate fields on the pledge card stipulating an intent to pledge a
specific amount, the TIM Office will forward all pledge cards back to the parish for further follow-up
about the donor’s intent to actually make a pledge.
All batch discrepancies outlined above will be marked on the TIM Office Use portion of the transmittal
and e-mailed back to the parish for reference.
Parish Detail Reports
Parish Detail Reports will be emailed weekly from February to April and bi-weekly thereafter. These reports
will contain all processed items from parish batches, Direct Mail, pledge payments and online gifts. (See Ap-
pendix for a sample Parish Detail Report)
