Our Mission:
“Growing in Love in the Spirit of Christ for the benefit of all.”
Our Vision:
Our Vision at St. Joseph’s Catholic School is to put Christ at the centre of all
we do. We provide a happy, secure and caring environment in which
learning, prayer and personal and community growth form the basis for
lifelong education.
“Every Child has the right to learn, every teacher has the right to teach.
Every Parent has the right to be involved in their child’s education” Our Aims:
• Value everyone in the School, Parish, Local, National and International
communities in which we live.
• Nurture the development of the whole child.
• Create a secure and stimulating learning environment, both indoor and
out where all are motivated to achieve their best.
• Provide opportunities that enable children to co-operate and work
harmoniously.
• Provide a broad and balanced curriculum relevant to the individual
learning and social needs of children living and growing in the area of
Boughton and New Ollerton in the 21st Century.
• Provide a successful partnership between home and school.
• Use assessment to plan for each child’s progression and next steps to
learning.
• Ensure that all children have equality of access to education and that
individual differences are celebrated and support learning.
• Promote good manners and respect of all.
• Make prayer a meaningful experience within the life of the school.

on our records) is available for all parents to view in the Schools Main Reception. If any parents
require a copy please enquire at Reception.
Holidays During Term Time
Holidays during term time will be referred to Nottinghamshire County Council for consideration. In
most cases a fixed penalty notice will be issued. For guidance of the cost of penalty notices visit
www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk.
Medicines and Inhalers
We request parents complete a short form (health care plan) giving us details and permission to
administer medicine during the school day.
Pupils suffering with asthma should have their inhaler with them at all times stored in the
classrooms and are accessible to the children and all members of staff. Parents with children who
suffer specific allergies are also required to notify the Head Teacher. Please update us on new
medical conditions which may emerge.
Uniform
Order forms are available from Reception. Book bags and ties are available from the school office.
First Aid and Safety
All staff have received emergency First Aid training. If your child is injured he/she will be treated
by trained staff and incidents are logged. Accident information will be passed onto parents and
carers by Teachers or with an accident information slip. If your child is seriously injured you will be
informed by a phone call and may be asked to attend school and pick up your child. Accident
information will be sent home following head injuries or other serious injury.
Dinner Money
Dinner money needs to be paid in advance each Monday for the week ahead (or ½ termly/termly
in advance if parents wish). Please make it clear which days your child requires a meal. Please be
aware that Nottinghamshire County Council does not allow dinner debts to develop. Children in
Key Stage 1 (Owls, Year 1 & Year 2) will receive a free school meal under the new Government
Universal Free School Meals Scheme.
Free School Meals
Ask at the school office if you are in receipt of certain benefits and think you may be entitled to Free School Meals. They will help in completing any application. Please register even if your child does not take up the meal as this generates important funding for the school and all our children. If your child is in Key Stage 1 and receives a Free School Meal through the new Scheme it is still vital that you claim for Free School Meals as this again generates important funding, plus they will also receive Free School Milk as part of the same claim.
Milk
Milk is free to all under 5’s and to all children under 7 in receipt of Free School Meals (registration
is required). Subsidised Milk is also available for all priced 21p per day. Register online at
www.coolmilk.com , email at [email protected] or by registration form from the school.
Contact the school office for more details.
Fruit
Children in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 receive a daily piece of fruit as part of the National
Fruit Scheme. Children at Key Stage 2 are encouraged to bring in a piece of fruit or vegetable to eat
at break time. No other snacks are permitted.
Swimming
Swimming this year will take place on Thursday afternoons between 1.30 p.m. and 2.15 p.m. at
Retford Swimming Pool during the second half of the year. Year 5 & 1 – March/April, Year 3 & 4 –
April/May/June, Year 2 & 6 – June/July. A voluntary donation is requested to help towards the
total cost of swimming. Parent helpers are also very welcome.
Child absence
If your child is absent from school it is important that you inform the school office on the first
morning. This can be done by phone (01623 860392) Option 1 on the answerphone service or by
text 07797800068. If you do not inform school of the reason for absence, it will be recorded as
unauthorised and could over time, attract a penalty notice.
Playground safety
Please encourage your child to dismount cycles and scooters before entering the playground. All
dogs should be tied up on the external railings to the playground away from entrances being used
by parents and children. Please discourage your children from using equipment in the playground
before and after school when it is particularly busy. Please walk around the playground if it is being
used at the end of the day for P.E.
Parking Please be aware of safety and respect our neighbours when parking at the beginning and
end of the school day. Please adhere to road markings and parking restrictions whilst supporting
our Patrol Officer in her work.
Headlice
All schools have incidences of Headlice from time to time. When this does happen we will contact you as Parents / Guardians and ask you to treat your child as soon as possible so that we can minimise the spread. The website www.onceaweektakeapeek.com/ contains practical advice on checking your child, treatment and other information. The most important message being that if everyone in the school community checks regularly and treats immediately then incidences can be kept to a minimum.
Jewellery
Only stud ear- ring and watches are allowed to be worn in school. To avoid wasting time during
lessons and / or items being misplaced or stolen we ask that no jewellery items are worn on P.E.
days. Our policy falls in line with local secondary schools in asking that only one earring per ear
should be worn. Parents should ensure that any new piercings take place during the summer
holidays so that ear rings can still be removed for P.E.
Educational visits Teachers plan educational visits throughout the year to support the children’s
learning. We attempt to keep any costs to parents to a minimum but we need a voluntary
contribution towards the cost, which includes transport to and from the venues. The Governors
reserve the right to cancel trips if insufficient funding is available. Unfortunately due to transport
and pre-booking costs we cannot offer refunds to children missing trips through absence.
Emergency School Closure Procedure
Any decision is made through consultation between the senior management of the school, the
chair of Governors, the school site Manager and other local establishments.
The decision is immediately posted onto the school website – www. stjosephsschool.net BBC radio
Nottingham are informed and announcements made during their morning programme.
Website www.bbc.co.uk/news/england/nottingham also lists all school closures in Nottingham.
Text messages will be used to inform parents of any School closure. Remember to inform the
school office regarding any change in contact numbers and emergency details.
Child Protection
St Joseph’s actively seek to safeguard all children within its community. A set procedure of
referring to children’s social care for advice and action it as a concern is raised about the welfare,
health or care of a child. Parents will be notified if this happens. For more help or information go to
the schools website: www.stjosephsschool.net, alternatively contact Mrs Dillon – Safeguarding
Lead at St Joseph’s, or Gala Middleton – Safeguarding Governor at St Joseph’s.
If you think a child is at risk of danger, contact M.A.S.H (it can be anonymous) on 0300 500 8080.
Home/School Relationship
Should you have any concerns about your child’s education or wish to discuss any aspect of your
child’s schooling or development, please make an appointment with the Class Teacher. In the
interests of the children and class routines, please try to meet teachers informally at the end of the
School Day. A copy of the School’s Complaints Procedure is available on our website or from the
School Reception.
Parent View
If you are a registered parent or carer of a pupil at school, you can give OFSTED your views about
the school by completing their online survey called Parent View at: http://www.parentview.ofsted.gov.uk
