You read, write, and speak Spanish well—so why not take your education to the next level? Live and study
in Buenos Aires, where the local people are open and interested in speaking Spanish with you and helping
you learn their language, history, and cultures.
Specially designed for students with advanced Spanish language proficiency, our program allows you to
build on your language skills as you immerse yourself in the culture of Argentina. You also can participate
in the Center’s academic symposium, giving you the opportunity to write and present on a topic of your
choosing, and have your work published!
You can enroll in courses at local universities, including the Universidad Torcuato di Tella, Universidad
de Buenos Aires, and the Pontifica Universidad Católica Argentina, where you’ll experience the Argentine
educational system first-hand and enjoy access to local student activities. Maybe you’ll make some
Argentine friends while you’re at it.
Buenos Aires will be your classroom. During your semester in Buenos Aires, you’ll participate in more than
30 cultural events and trips, taking you in and around the city to experience life as a local resident does and
better understand the city’s cultures. Perfect your Spanish skills and make new friends while chatting with
local students in between classes. Enjoy social events at the IES Abroad Center with language partners
and Argentine students. In Buenos Aires, you can add international work experience to your résumé while
earning credit by participating in an internship placement and accompanying academic seminar. You can
also enroll in a service learning course that helps you understand some of Buenos Aires’ most pressing
social issues, while contributing your skills toward a community-driven solution.
We want you to feel at home in Buenos Aires, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into life in
the city. From housing to cultural events, our job is to make sure you have the most authentic study abroad
experience possible.

Because Buenos Aires is in such a great time of transition, now is the time to study abroad here and
witness this change first-hand. Buenos Aires isn’t just the capital city of Argentina, it’s also the financial,
industrial, and commercial hub of the country. As a growing global city, Buenos Aires also has one of
South America’s busiest ports, is a UNESCO City of Design because of its fashion influence, and is a
major tourist destination in Latin America.
Designed for Business and International Relations students, this program allows you to learn about the
contemporary politics and business in Latin America, as well as Argentina’s relationships with other
Latin American countries and the world. You’ll also gain the tools you need to become a global leader,
with courses like Leading Across Cultures and Managing Behavior in Organizations. All courses are
taught in English.
Buenos Aires will also be your classroom while witnessing the city’s rich European influences.
Explore El Centro, the city center, which is home to several of the most important sights in Buenos
Aires, including the gorgeous Teatro Colon (one of the best opera houses in the world), as well as the
beautiful Plaza de Mayo. The Plaza de Mayo is surrounded by the Casa Rosada (the presidential home),
the Cabildo (the old town hall), the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Congress Building, and much more.
Wander around the city’s many eclectic neighborhoods, like La Boca, San Telmo, and Recoleta, to see
how the Argentineans live. And enjoy our many free events in and around Buenos Aires to learn about
the city’s great people and their culture.
We want you to feel at home in Buenos Aires, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into life
in the city. From housing to cultural events, our job is to make sure you have the most authentic study

If you’re ready for an urban adventure, Buenos Aires is your city. With endless city districts and
neighborhoods to explore, you will get lost in the sights and sounds of Buenos Aires. Tango the
night away as you learn the country’s popular dance, attend one of the many soccer games, and
browse the local art scene—all this and more awaits you as a study abroad student in Buenos Aires.
Open to students of all language levels, the Latin American Societies & Cultures Program allows you
to improve your Spanish language skills while taking courses in Business, Humanities, and Social
Sciences, all of which feature an academic emphasis on Latin America.
If you have beginning- or intermediate-level Spanish language skills, you can choose from a wide variety
of English-taught IES Abroad courses in areas such as Literature, History, Anthropology, International
Business, and Political Science. If you have advanced-level Spanish language skills, you have the option
to choose from Spanish-taught IES Abroad courses and courses through the prestigious Pontificia
Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA). You’ll take an Argentina Today course at UCA to learn more
about the people, customs, and traditions of your host country. You can also participate in the Center’s
Academic Symposium, which gives you an opportunity to present your research paper (in English or
Spanish) and have it published!
Buenos Aires will be your classroom. During your term, you’ll enjoy more than 30 cultural events and
trips with IES Abroad. Learn about visual arts in the city and then meet with local graffiti artists before
seeing their work. Study the impact of globalization in Latin America, and then enroll in an internship,
which includes time spent working at your placement in addition to an academic seminar that helps you
contextualize what you’re learning.
We want you to feel at home in Buenos Aires, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into life
in the city. From housing to cultural events, our job is to make sure you have the most authentic study
abroad experience possible.

Service LearningParticipating in a service learning experience in Buenos Aires is an
opportunity to give back to the community while gaining a much
deeper understanding of the city’s culture and society. Working

first-hand some of the social issues that affect Buenos Aires while
contributing your skills toward a community-driven solution.
A service learning experience consists of time spent with a local
organization, accompanied by an academic, for-credit service
learning seminar. Through the seminar you have structured time for
reflection and discussion, and even research, on the issues of your
host community.
Possible placements may include organizations focusing on advocacy
for the disabled, community health, at-risk youth, homelessness, and
other social issues unique to Buenos Aires.

With a population of more than 5 million people, Santiago is both the capital of Chile and its largest city.
Its residents have a community-centered public health system, one that you’ll be able to observe and
experience first-hand when you study abroad in Santiago.
Designed for advanced Spanish students in health-related majors such as Pre-Med, Nursing, and Public
Health, as well as students in other health-related fields, this program offers valuable insight into
Santiago’s health care system. You will develop health care-related experience while improving your
communication skills through a Spanish course for health practitioners.
Courses offered include:
• Spanish for Health Care Practitioners – This course is designed to help you develop Spanish
language skills for a career in health. It stresses the acquisition of medical vocabulary, as well as
health-related and intercultural communication skills.
• Health Studies Seminar – This unique course includes a seminar that provides a background and
context for health care in Chile, as well as an observership that includes 80 hours of relevant
experience. You have two options for the practicum:
• Clinical Observation - Visit private and public clinics/hospitals and interact with different
health care professionals.
• Community Health – Work with a not-for-profit organization that works in underprivileged
neighborhoods to promote health education and improve living conditions. You will be
matched according to your skills and experience.
Santiago will be your classroom. Don’t just observe the Chilean people—live like one when you explore
the vibrant craft markets; enjoy Chilean cuisine like asado Chileno, paila marina, and almejas a la
Parmesana; and visit local photography, sculpture, and paintings at Galería AFA and other nearby
museos. All while practicing your Spanish language skills, of course.
We want you to feel at home in Santiago, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into life in
the city. From housing and cultural events, our job is to make sure you have the most authentic study
abroad experience possible.

InternshipsParticipating in a service learning experience in Santiago is an opportunity to give back
to the community while gaining a much deeper understanding of the city’s culture and
society. Working alongside local people toward a common goal, you experience first-
hand some of the social issues that affect Santiago, while contributing your skills toward
a community-driven solution.
A service learning experience consists of time spent with a local organization, accompanied
by an academic, for-credit service learning seminar. Through the seminar you have structured
time for reflection and discussion, and even research, on the issues of your host community.
Interning while you study in Santiago gives you a rewarding job experience with a

As the capital of Chile, a country with one of the strongest economies in Latin America, Santiago is the
industrial and financial center of Chile and home to more than 5 million people, making it an ideal place to
observe rapid development and its effects on culture and society. Experience first-hand how historic and
modern architecture, fine and folk arts, a dynamic business sector, and fascinating history come together
in this electrifying metropolis.
Our Politics, Social Justice & Language Program allows you to fully immerse yourself in the daily life and
culture of Chile while studying the Spanish language and political topics. Explore the intricacies of the
Chilean sociopolitical landscape: student activism, the arts as a form of resistance, human rights issues,
and an impressive literary culture (via world renowned authors like Pablo Neruda and Isabel Allende).
Your studies and extracurricular adventures will without a doubt allow you to embark on a real-life case
study of Chile's thriving society.
Courses are taught in Spanish by distinguished professors, most with primary appointments at one of IES
Abroad’s partner universities. You can also enroll in an internship or service learning placement during
your time in Santiago, which will help you add international work experience to your résumé or help you
understand the city’s social issues first-hand.
Santiago will be your classroom. Imagine practicing your Spanish as you tour local neighborhoods or visit
local business organizations as part of your study of Chile’s regional and global trade. Wherever possible,
our courses take advantage of the city’s many historical, artistic, and cultural sites, and several courses also
include a hands-on, practical component.
You can enroll in courses at local universities, including the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and
the Universidad de Chile, where you’ll experience the Chilean educational system and enjoy access to
local student activities. Maybe you’ll even make some Chilean friends while you’re at it.
We want you to feel at home in Santiago, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into life in the
city. From housing and cultural events to our Club Chileno Program, our job is to make sure you have the
most authentic study abroad experience possible.

There’s a reason why many of the world’s most famous scientists have visited the Galápagos Islands—now it’s your turn to discover one of the world’s most beautiful and biologically diverse island locations. It’s here that you will get hands-on experience studying topics such as Biology, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Marine Ecology, and Sociology.
This direct enrollment program is organized through the Galápagos Academic Institute for the Arts and Sciences (GAIAS), a remote campus of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) located on the island of San Cristóbal.
Before you head to the Galápagos, the program will begin with a month in Quito, where you participate in an orientation, a 1-credit Spanish class, and the first course in your academic track at our Quito Center and USFQ Cumbayá campus, as well as course-related excursions. The remaining months are spent on San Cristóbal in the Galápagos Islands. Additional course-related excursions allow you to spend time in other locations, based on your course enrollment. Choose from courses in three tracks:
• Evolution, Ecology & Conservation; • Marine Ecology; or • People, Politics & the Environment.
The Galápagos Islands and Quito will be your classroom. Witness the famous land iguanas and giant tortoises as you study the evolution of these unique species. Visit indigenous and traditional Andean communities to better understand the relationship between humans and their environment. Dive into the Pacific to get close to the marine life you learn about.
We want you to feel at home in Quito and the Galápagos Islands, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into student life. From housing to cultural events, our job is to make sure you have the most authentic study abroad experience possible. During your time in the city of Quito and the Galápagos, you stay with a host family or señora, which helps you familiarize yourself with the Galápagos, its people, and its cultures.

IES Abroad’s mission is simple: to provide
you with the best study abroad program
possible—which includes the highest
quality academic and cultural experiences.
That is why we partnered with USFQ,
which offers this program through their
GAIAS campus.
About the Galápagos Academic
Institute for the Arts and
Sciences (GAIAS)
GAIAS is a remote campus of the Universidad
San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) that
was established to further efforts in
conservation and sustainable development
in the Galápagos Islands. As a world-class
academic and research institution, GAIAS
attracts both local and international students
and scholars from around the world.
GAIAS offers unparalleled courses
that explore Ecology, Biology, and
Environmental Studies through an
in-depth and hands-on approach. The
university’s professors and course options
enhance your academic experience and
provide you with new perspectives each
day in class.
Program Tracks The program offers the following tracks,
which each consist of five course modules.
You must take your first two courses in
your selected track. After that, you can take
courses in other tracks as long as you meet
all prerequisites and there is space available.
• Evolution, Ecology & Conservation –
Examine first-hand how Ecuador’s
diverse ecosystems have been shaped
by evolutionary processes and the role
that distinct societies have played in
the protection or transformation of
these environments. Course-related
excursions bring you to bio-diverse
jungles, picturesque coastal regions, and
to one of the world’s tallest volcanoes.
To enroll in courses in this track, you
should have a background in Biology
and Ecology.
• Marine Ecology – Examine the
importance of marine conservation
and the social aspects of marine
management by combining coursework
and fieldwork on the Pacific Coast
and in the Galápagos Islands. You
visit mangroves, wetlands, intertidal
ecosystems, open oceans, and coral
reefs as you study animal habitats and
communities. To enroll in courses in this
track, you should have a background in

With a population of nearly 1.6 million people, Quito is a vibrant and modern city that is famous for its
beautiful colonial Spanish architecture. It is also the capital of Ecuador—one of the most biologically
varied countries in the world. Come to Quito and immerse yourself in the local language and cultures as
you focus your studies on Ecuador’s ecological and ethnic diversity and the challenges of development.
If you’re interested in improving your Spanish language skills, this program offers you the opportunity
to rapidly strengthen your Spanish through a rigorous language course taught by IES Abroad. You select
the remainder of your courses from options available at IES Abroad and prestigious local universities.
You can also enroll in a service learning placement during your time in Quito, which will help you
understand the city’s social issues first-hand.
Quito will be your classroom. Can you imagine visiting and observing Ecuadorian customs at a
traditional fiesta or visiting local markets and handicraft workshops with your classes? Wherever
possible, our courses take advantage of the city’s many historical, artistic, and cultural sites. All courses
include a hands-on, practical component.
You also take several field trips to exotic locations while you study abroad in Quito, including the remote
Galápagos Islands. Imagine yourself in an environmental haven of fearless sea lions, penguins, iguanas,
and tortoises 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. It’s not very often you’d get to be so near to nature and
see so many species up close—with IES Abroad, we’ll take you there.
We want you to feel at home in Quito, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into life in the
city. From housing to cultural events, our job is to make sure you have the most authentic study abroad

Designed for students interested in business, economics, sociology, and political science, this multi-location
interdisciplinary program offers a unique comparative perspective of two of the most notable emerging economies in
South America: Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Santiago, Chile.
The fall program begins with orientation in Buenos Aires, where the fi rst half of the program is held, followed by a
week-long, course-related trip to Peru, and the second half of the program in Santiago.
Learn about the accelerated pace of globalization and economic growth in these markets while experiencing two very
different cultures, complete with their own distinct institutions, laws, and business practices and cultures. Both serve
as models for both the pitfalls and opportunities surrounding economies in transition within the global marketplace.
The required core course, Emerging Economies: A Global Perspective of Opportunities & Challenges in Argentina & Chile,
runs the entire semester across both locations. The course not only provides the overall framework of the program,
but also includes a mock consulting project to help you put to practical use what you are learning in and outside
the classroom. You will also choose two of three courses offered in both locations to provide local context to your
overall study of emerging economies. Sample courses include Contemporary Argentine History: Politics & Culture in
the Construction of National Identity and Economic Transformation in Chile from the late 20th into the 21st Century. In
addition, an optional 1-credit basic Spanish course is available to support your integration into to the host cultures via
language learning.
The week-long, course-related trip to Peru—a country with one of the fastest growing economies in the world— will
provide yet another perspective of a key Latin American country emerging into the world market. You will also have
the unforgettable experience of visiting Machu Picchu. Optional fi eld trips to Valparaíso (a UNESCO designated World
Heritage Site) and Viña del Mar in Chile, and South America’s most progressive country, Uruguay, are designed to
enrich your learning experience.
Santiago and Buenos Aires will also be your classrooms. Imagine visiting Chilean local business organizations as part of
your study of regional and global trade. Or meeting business professionals in Buenos Aires, who can speak to you fi rst-
hand about how the city is poised to emerge as one Latin America’s strongest economies following the implementation
of new fi scal policies and restructuring of debt.
We want you to feel at home in both Santiago and Buenos Aires, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into
life in these cities. From housing to cultural events, our job is to make sure you have the most engaging and authentic
study abroad experience possible.

Orientation
The program begins with a one-week
orientation that introduces you to the
structure of the program and what to
expect. During this time, you will have the
opportunity to meet the IES Abroad staff,
your fellow students, and explore the city.
Topics such as academics, housing,
transportation, and health and safety are
covered during this time. You will delve into
local culture through activities to help you
make the most of your new surroundings.
Upon your arrival in the second city, your
two-day orientation after arrival will include
topics such as academic courses, housing,
transportation, and health and safety, as well
as a city tour.
Additionally, CORE™, IES Abroad’s
Comprehensive Orientation & Re-entry
Experience, begins during orientation and
continues throughout the semester with
activities focusing on cultural adjustment,
goal achievement, and preparing for the
return home.
Housing & Meals
You have a private, furnished room in the
home of a señora or family during your
time in Buenos Aires and in Santiago. Your
homestay hosts provide two meals a day.
Health & Safety
With 65 years of experience, we are proud
to set the standard for health and safety
in study abroad. Our Chicago-based and
on-site staff are all highly-trained and
experienced in the matters of health, safety,
and crisis management. We are here for you
from predeparture to your return, and are
ready to support you—no matter what time
zone you’re in.
