2017-2018 DRAFT (OPTION 2)
CHARLES COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS CALENDAR (Option includes full spring break week after Easter to accommodate marking period window, three inclement weather days built in to the calendar
to end school for students by June 15, and usage of spring break days and Presidents Day as inclement weather make-up dates)
Important considerations – inclement weather closure history for the past five school years
2011-12 school year – schools were closed for three days during the first two weeks of schools for conditions caused by Hurricane Irene. To
enter the winter weather season with more than one inclement weather day left, the Board approved opening on Fair Day/Teacher in-
service day in September, opening on a scheduled day off in October for students and teachers, and converting a staff in-service
day/student closure day in November to a two-hour early dismissal attendance day for students. CCPS did not close any additional school
days for winter weather during this school year and ended the school year with four weather days intact.
2012-13 school year – schools were closed for four days from winter weather; four days were built into the calendar; no additional make-up
days needed.
2013-14 – schools were closed for ten days from winter weather; four days were built into the calendar; system able to use Presidents Day
as one make-up date (four closure dates between Dec. 2013 and Jan. 2014), leaving five days to make up. State approved a modified waiver
request for three days (initially denied waiver for five days); schools opened for two first two days of spring break (break fell week before
April 20 Easter). System modified four two-hour early dismissal days to add instructional time; however instructional hours do not count as
student attendance days.
2014-15 – schools were closed for seven days from winter weather; four days built into the calendar; schools opened for first three days
during spring break (break fell week before April 5 Easter).
2015-16 – schools were closed for five days from winter weather; six days were built into the calendar.
