Mayor’s MessageAs the Mayor, I have the

opportunity to work with many of our youth in the community; just this past week we swore in a new Youth City Council who will serve the community this coming year. In past years we have had over a hundred members of this elite group of kids. They meet reg-ularly to do leadership training activities and give service to the community. After being sworn in to office I saw them in action as they volunteered to serve the din-ner at the annual Police Awards Banquet and then showed up on a rainy Saturday morning to help set-up, take-down, and cook hot-dogs for the “Bike with the May-or” event. You will also see them during Art City Days helping with the Fun-A-Rama and the Chil-dren’s Art Festival.

Another group of youth serving our community is our Youth Court. This is a legally rec-ognized court system for juveniles who are first time offenders that can come before a group of their peers and receive sentences of community service so the offend-er can maintain a clean juvenile record. This court is made up of volunteer youth age 14-18 and hold positions of mentor, clerk, bailiffs, and judges.

through installing “Buddy Benches” at Sage Creek Elementary. Katie was nominated for May’s Mayor’s Recognition Award by SJHS Principal Ryan McGuire. He writes

Residential SolicitorsThe summer months usually brings

solicitors to the doors of Springville City residents. If a solicitor comes to your door, ask to see their City-Issued License. If they cannot produce one, please instruct them to go to the City office to obtain a license and turn them away. If you have a “No Soliciting” sign posted, you may also immediately contact the Springville Police Department at 801.489.9421.

Please Mow Weeds

Springville City Community Development Department would like to remind all citizens, as the Spring and Summer seasons are upon us, that weeds are considered to be a nuisance and must be abated to keep them from spreading throughout the community.

Springville City Code 12-2-113(j)Noxious Weeds. Noxious weeds located on vacant lots or other Property, along public sidewalks or the outer edge of any public street, or weeds in any other location which constitute a fire hazard or are unsightly. Undeveloped lots which have weeds, grass or other growth which constitute an existing or potential fire hazard shall be abated by the owner of the Property.

Weed abatement compliance shall be accomplished by pulling, discing, plowing or mowing weeds within 4 inches of the ground. The City shall survey properties within the City and identify those needing abatement and then serve notice in writing upon the owner or occupant of such land in person or by mailing notice, postage prepaid, addressed to the owner or occupant at the last known post office address as indicated by the records of the County Assessor.

The notice shall require the owner or occupant as the case may be to abate the weeds by a specific time, which shall not be less than ten (10) days from the date of service of such notice. One notice shall be deemed sufficient on any lot or parcel of Property for the entire season of weed growth during that year.

Please be courteous to your neighbors and do your part to keep the weeds from becoming a nuisance. Code Enforcement will be on the lookout, citing property owners who do not abate and maintain the weeds growing on their property and adjoining public right-of-way. Thank you for your cooperation in maintaining a clean, attractive and safe community.

400 South Lane Improvements

Beginning in late summer 2016, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and Springville City will be working on a joint project to improve traffic movement along 400 South between 100 West and 400 East. This section of roadway currently carries over 15,600 vehicles per day along this congested corridor.

The 400 South Roadway Widening project will initiate street modifications on 400 South to allow improved traffic flow beginning at 400 East and extending westward to 100 West.

Of significance will be the removal of all on-street parking and the introduction of an additional vehicle travel lane in each direction on 400 South between Main Street and 400 East. The improved street cross-section will have two eastbound and two westbound vehicle travel lanes with a two-way left-turn lane in the center of the roadway.

Traffic signal coordination will also be emphasized in the 400 South Roadway Widening project. The City is partnering with UDOT to synchronize the traffic signals on 400 South from 400 East through Main Street.

When available more information and updates will be included on the City website and social media.

Notice to Springville Residents

Fire Works Restriction

Due to the extreme fire danger, some areas of Springville City are closed to all fireworks. This is the same boundary as in years past, with no change in restricted areas. All fireworks are banned on the northeast foothill boundaries of Springville, effective immediately. The fireworks ban is designed to prevent any fireworks being used within 1000 ft. of the US Forest boundary near the foothills.

The boundary is defined as follows: Starting at Main Street and 1400 North, east up through Millpond Dr.; east on 400 North and winding its way over to 1300 East and up Canyon road to 2450 East, including all areas east of 2400 East to the City limits. (See the boundary map posted a t s p r i n g v i l l e . o r g / w p - c o n t e n t /uploads/2011/12/Fireworks_Zone_Detail.pdf.)

Legal fireworks may be used in other areas of town from 11am to 11 pm, between July 1st and July 7th and July 21st and July 27th extending to midnight on July 4th and July 24th of this year, per Utah State law.

With your help we can have a fun and a safe firework season.
