The Beauty and Glory of the Christian WorldviewEDITED BY JOEL R. BEEKE

description“I once was blind, but now I see” is the glad confession of the Christian’s heart. However, what is it that a Christian now sees that so transforms his life? It is the Christian worldview. This is not an abstract philosophy so much as biblical doctrine for life. The Word of God establishes God-centered think-ing, engages faithful living, and energizes ardent feeling for the kingdom of Christ in this world and the world to come. In this volume, several pastors and theologians band together to explore aspects of the Christian worldview such as God’s Trinity, supremacy, and loving sovereignty over all of life; the Christian’s identity in Christ, sexuality, and suff erings; and the Christian life as both earthly mission and heavenly pilgrimage.

Contributors include Derek Thomas, Michael Barrett, Joel Beeke, Paul Smal-ley, Mark Kelderman, Brian Cosby, Charles Barrett, and Gerald Bilkes.

endorsements“A worldview, while often unspoken and even unrecognized, is powerful and subtle enough to shape the entirety of a culture’s thought and speech. The singular claim of these various essays, which originated in the annual con-ference of the Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, is that Christianity entails a distinctive worldview. This worldview is the source of true beauty (there is such a thing!) and, when grasped and lived out, brings great glory to our triune God. A timely set of practical and helpful refl ections.”

MICHAEL A. G. HAyKIN, professor of church history, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“How are Christians to think in a world that increasingly pressures and perse-cutes them? However precisely that question is answered, the papers given at the 2016 PRTS Conference will undoubtedly provide the substance of a biblically faithful answer. The Beauty and Glory of the Christian Worldview begins by rooting our thinking in the theological and practical riches of the Holy Trinity, and ends by directing our thinking to the promised coming of Christ and the eternal glory that is the blood bought possession of all God’s people. PRTS is to be thanked for providing for the church a book that will help Christians engage less apprehensively and more confi dently with the thinking of this fallen, anti-Christ world.”

All That Is in God: Evangelical Theology and the Challenge of Classical Christian TheismJAMES E. DOLEZAL

endorsements“All That Is in God: Evangelical Theology and the Challenge of Classical Christian Theism off ers an exceptionally clear, concise, and compelling presentation of what, until recently, Christians have always believed and confessed regard-ing the being and perfection of the triune God. It also off ers incisive analysis of much contemporary evangelical teaching about God, concluding that both conservative and progressive ‘theistic mutualists’ share common assumptions and fallacies regarding the being and activity of God. I know of no other con-temporary book that makes both of these contributions together in one place, and certainly not with the degree of clarity, charity, and persuasiveness that Dolezal’s book exhibits. A worthy book that deserves a wide readership!”

SCOTT R. SWAIN, Professor of Systematic Theology and Academic Dean, Reformed Theological Seminary

“The road to doctrinal decline is not a steep cliff but a gradual descent. Before we realize it, we have altered or abandoned long-cherished beliefs and doc-trine. James Dolezal sounds the alarm on the important but forgotten doctrine of divine simplicity. He calls the church back to its traditional understanding and creedal affi rmations not because he fears change, but because they are biblical. This book is well worth the time to read, digest, and reinvigorate our understanding of the simplicity of God.”

J. V. FESKO, Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology, Westminster Seminary California

“All That Is in God is a fi ne sequel to the author’s God without Parts (2011). The chapters provide an excellent guide to the main contours of classical theism. Dr. Dolezal also sounds a timely warning to those who have been tempted to modify this theism in the interests of what he aptly calls ‘theistic mutualism.’ The result is an excellent, up-to-date reminder of the Christian doctrine of God as understood by the conciliar statements and by the mainstream Reformed confessions.”

PAUL HELM, Teaching Fellow, Regent College

“This is a signifi cant book on a topic that could hardly be more important. What we believe about the nature of God matters, and we dare not risk having an underdeveloped or sub-biblical understanding of such a central Christian con-cern. To put it as plainly as possible: I want every one of our students to read this book and to refl ect deeply on its teachings, since what Dolezal seeks to explain is nothing less than the historic doctrine of the Christian church.”

about the authorJAMES DURHAM (1622–1658) served as minis-ter at Black Friars church in Glasgow, a chaplain to King Charles II, and a minister at the Inner Kirk of the cathedral in Glasgow. Known for his piety, wisdom, and scholarship, Durham stands as one of the great Scottish Presbyteri-ans of the seventeenth century.

Collected Sermons of James DurhamEDITED BY CHRIS COLDWELL

descriptionEnglish Puritanism and Scottish Presbyterianism in the 17th century had many bright and shining lights. Of these, James Durham (1622–1658), ranks alongside the greatest for his theological depth, faithful preaching, and particularly for his moderate spirit at a time of great controversy. “No Scotchman of that age was more profoundly venerated” (Walker). Dur-ham, whose father and grandfather served the king as Clerk of Exchequer, was seemingly destined to the life of a Scottish laird, yet through several remarkable providences he came to study for the ministry under David Dickson, and did so well that it is said he could have served as a professor of divinity in any university. Yet, Durham’s brief ministry was spent preach-ing for the most part in the Inner-Kirk of Glasgow Cathedral. He came to excel in ‘case divinity’ or ‘cases of conscience,’ and it was thought that he poured so much of himself into his preparations that it brought about his early death.

Durham’s sermons and expositions left an impression that lasted for cen-turies, and while he was mostly overlooked in the resurgence of interest in the Puritans in the 19th century, in the late 20th century publishers brought renewed attention with various editions of some of works. Most of his lec-tures (Ten Commandments, Song of Solomon, Job, John’s Revelation, andTreatise on Scandal) have been published in new editions. The remaining works are sets of sermons, many of which have not seen new editions since the 18th century, and original editions are extremely rare. The publishers are pleased to off er for the fi rst time all the sermons of James Durham in these two uniform volumes.

Collected Sermons of James Durham: Sixty-one Sermons. This volume con-tains sermons series on “The Blessedness of the Death of Those That Die in the Lord,” “The Unsearchable Riches of Christ” (communion sermons), “Heaven upon Earth” (on conscience), “The Great Gain of Contenting Godliness,” “The Great Corruption of Subtle Self,” as well as miscellaneous sermons that appeared in various publications. The last includes a recent transcription from manuscript of one of Durham’s most important ser-mons preached at the beginning of the Protester-Resolutioner schism in Scotland. All have been uniformly edited, crossed referenced as needed, and a new, invaluable introduction covering the life and works of Durham is included.

Collected Sermons of James Durham: Christ Cruci ed: or, The Marrow of the Gos-pel in 72 Sermons on Isaiah 53. Last published in 1799 and fi rst republished in 2001 by Naphtali Press, this new critical edition has been collated anew against the earliest editions, and the text signifi cantly corrected and aug-mented with editorial notes. Spurgeon says of these sermons “This is marrow indeed. We need say no more: Durham is a prince among spiritual exposi-tors,” and inscribed his personal copy with “much prized.” The same can be said of all Durham’s sermons.

endorsement In an early sermon Spurgeon said, “If I had lived in his [Durham’s] time, I should never, I think, have wanted to hear any other preacher; I would have sat, both by night and day, to receive the sweet droppings of his honeyed lips” (sermon 172).

Glorious Remembrance: The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper as Administered in the Liturgy of the Reformed ChurchesRAY B. LANNING

descriptionRay B. Lanning provides helpful refl ections on the Form for the Administration of the Lord’s Supper in the liturgy of the Reformed Churches. Part one is a guide for those preparing to come to the Lord’s Table, something for each day of the week prior to the Lord’s Day appointed for administration of the Sacrament. Part two further explores the Form in meditations on the purposes for which Christ instituted the Sacrament and the manner of its celebration. These meditations can be read before or after partaking of the Lord’s Supper. Appended to this is a study edition of the Form for the Administration of the Lord’s Supper. Here is instruction and encouragement as you seek to make ever more diligent use of the “glorious remembrance” of the death of Christ as a means of grace.

“The brevity of this booklet belies the valuable resource it is. Through clear explanation and varied biblical, catechism, and Psalter references, Ray Lanning encourages careful prepa-ration for the sacrament. God’s children who refl ectively and prayerfully use this in their devotions the week prior to the Lord’s Supper will fi nd it a blessing.”

Doctrine in Development: Johannes Piscator and Debates over Christ’s Active ObedienceHEBER CARLOS DE CAMPOS JR.

descriptionDoctrine in Development examines the doctrine of the imputation of Christ’s active obedience with a focus on the thought of Johannes Piscator. Challenging earlier schol-arship that regarded the doctrine as clearly present in the Reformers, Heber Campos shows how Piscator’s exegetical and theological arguments generated responses that brought together several other doctrines to support the imputation of Christ’s active obedience in a way that Reformed theologians had not previously done. Viewing Pisca-tor’s objections to the imputation of Christ’s positive righteousness as a turning point in the Reformed understanding of active obedience, Campos highlights the process of doctrinal development regarding Christ’s satisfaction.

Sweet Communion: Trajectories of Spirituality from the Middle Ages through the Further ReformationARIE DE REUVER, TRANSLATED BY JAMES A. DE JONG

descriptionSweet Communion introduces scholars and interested Reformed readers to the spiri-tuality practiced during the Further Reformation, a seventeenth-century movement that strove for a contemporary application of the sixteenth-century Reformation. The book is organized around leading fi gures of the era, including Willem Teellinck, The-odorus à Brakel, Guiljelmus Saldenus, Wilhelmus à Brakel, and Herman Witsius. Sweet Communion examines the quality, form, and roots of this period’s spirituality. De Reuver determines that each of the Further Reformation authors promotes a spirituality in which the heart experiences communion with God by the Word and Spirit. In examin-ing the roots of this spirituality, de Reuver reaches back to the Middle Ages and the spirituality of Thomas à Kempis and Bernard of Clairvaux.

endorsements“Interest in Reformed spirituality has been growing in recent years, particularly with ref-erence to the English Puritans. In this volume Professor de Reuver opens up the world of the Dutch Nadere Reformatie, of such theological luminaries as Teellinck and Wit-sius, for an English-speaking audience, thus off ering some of the riches of this tradition to the Anglo-American world. Dr. de Reuver is well qualifi ed to do this, having spent a lifetime studying and teaching this material. This book is warmly recommended to all who want to deepen their understanding of the catholic dimensions of Reformed spirituality.”CARL R. “This book highlights a fundamental but neglected fi eld of research in Reformation and Post-reformation studies. With superb scholarship, lucid argument, and masterful historical perspective, Joel Beeke presents an indispensable contribution to the understanding of the doctrine of double predestination in the era of the Protestant Reformation. A historically informed and contemporary relevant study.”

SERIES EDITORS: JOEL R. BEEKE AND JON D. PAYNE

descriptionIn his letter to the Ephesians, Paul elaborates on, in a most wonderful way, the God-given, Christ-secured, Holy Spirit-applied privileges of the Christian life. Here, perhaps more than anywhere else in the New Testament, we are brought face to face with the “unsearchable riches of Christ” (3:8). Step by adoring step, Paul introduces us to the spiritual blessings that are the predes-tined, blood-bought privileges of all who have put their self-abandoning trust in Jesus Christ. His letter to the Ephesians is a spiritual Mount Everest, turn-ing us away from ourselves and placing the spotlight of God’s great salvation wholly on Christ.

series endorsements“There are so many fi ne commentaries available today, but it’s great to have a reliable author you can turn to for solid Reformed refl ections on Scripture. In this case, there are sixteen of them—friends and fellow shepherds who have given me great insight into God’s Word over the years. I’m looking forward eagerly to each one of these sermonic commentaries!”

MICHAEL S. HORTON, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Apologetics and Sys-tematic Theology at Westminster Seminary California, host of the White Horse Inn radio show, editor-in-chief of Modern Reformation magazine

“Those of us who have promoted and practiced lectio continua expository preaching through the years eagerly await the volumes announced in The Lectio Continua Expository Commentary on the New Testament. We are equally eager to read such a series written by pastors who have practiced the method in their churches. The international and interdenominational character of the series will only add to the richness of its insights.”

And this new one on Irenaeus is no exception. We know his thought well because of his literary works, but much of his life is in the shadows. The Works of William Perkins, Volume 5EDITED BY RYAN HURD

JOEL R. BEEKE AND DEREK W. H. THOMAS,

GENERAL EDITORS

descriptionThe Works of William Perkins fi lls a major gap in Reformed and Puritan theol-ogy. Though Perkins is best known today for his writings on predestination, he also wrote prolifi cally on many subjects. His works fi lled over two thou-sand large pages of small print in three folio volumes and were reprinted several times in the decades after his death. However, his complete works have not been in print since the mid-seventeenth century. This modern, typeset edition of the Works includes four volumes of Perkins’s expositions of Scripture, three volumes of his doctrinal and polemical treatises, and three volumes of his practical writings.

The fi fth volume contains Perkins’s foundational book of Christian doctrine (Foundation of Christian Religion) as well as his classic expositions of the Apos-tles’ Creed and the Lord’s Prayer. All three titles in volume 5 are full of biblical, doctrinal, experiential, and practical truth on the basics of Christianity.

endorsements“On the broad shoulders of William Perkins, epoch-making pioneer, stood the entire school of seventeenth-century Puritan pastors and divines, yet the Puri-tan reprint industry has steadily bypassed him. Now, however, he begins to reappear, admirably edited, and at last this yawning gap is being fi lled. Profound thanks to the publisher and heartfelt praise to God have become due.”

J. I. PACKER, Board of Governors’ Professor of Theology, Regent College, Van-couver, British Columbia

Anthony Tuckney (1599–1670):Theologian of the Westminster AssemblyYOUNGCHUN CHO

FOREWORD BY JEFFREY JUE

endorsements“Anthony Tuckney has been overlooked down the years by all but a few scholars. In his day, however, he was a highly regarded theologian, infl uential in the delibera-tions of the Westminster Assembly, and particularly on the Larger Catechism. I am delighted to see Dr. Cho’s fi ne dissertation published, and I hope it will prove to be a signifi cant resource for further work on the theology of this important period.”ROBERT LETHAM

“Love it or not, the Westminster Confession of Faith is one of the enduring theologi-cal statements of seventeenth-century Puritan England. But relatively little is known about the individuals who contributed to the theology of this confession. For the fi rst time, Youngchun Cho has provided rich theological insight into one of the key shapers of the Westminster Confession, Anthony Tuckney (1599–1670). In his Anthony Tuckney: Theologian of the Westminster Assembly, we are treated to fi rst-rate research into Tuckney’s treatment of the doctrine of the union with Christ, which locates jus-tifi cation in proper relationship to sanctifi cation. This is not only superb scholarship but also a study with direct spiritual benefi t. Read it and be stimulated and blessed at the same time.” FRANK A. JAMES

Reservoirs of Strength: James’s Map of Still WatersGERALD M. BILKES

descriptionThe epistle of James opens with a command to count it all joy when we face life’s trials. But how can we speak of joy when diffi culties bring so much sadness? In Reservoirs of Strength, Gerald M. Bilkes surveys James’s letter and directs us to eight quiet streams that can strengthen us when things get hard: the truth of God, the lordship of Christ, the friendship of God, the wisdom of God, the grace of God, the will of God, the justice of God, and the ear of God. If the weight of the world has worn you down, come study the book of James and fi nd an inspired map to reservoirs of strength in testing times.

The Spirit of the Age: The 19th Century Debate Over the Holy Spirit and the

Westminster ConfessionJ. V. FESKO

descriptionIn 1903, the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America revised the Westminster Confes-sion of Faith because they thought it was defi cient regarding the Holy Spirit. In The Spirit of the Age, J. V. Fesko explores the diff erences between the pre-Enlightenment theology that formed the original Westminster Confession and the post-Enlightenment theology that called for its revision. This study reveals that the pneumatology of the original Westminster Confession is marked by catholicity, whereas the revisions of 1903 represent a doctrine of the Holy Spirt that departed from the com-mon Christianity of the ages. It also reveals that some of the underlying issues linked to the 1903 revisions are still alive today, even among Presbyterian fellowships that did not adopt the twentieth-century revisions to the Westminster Confession.

Counsel to Gospel Ministers JOHN BROWN OF HADDINGTON

endorsement“John Brown of Haddington is one of the great evangelical lights that shone in a dark time for Scottish Presbyterianism. The eighteenth century saw the rise of moderatism in the Kirk, but God raised up many great men in those days (Thomas Boston and the Erskines, for instance), and Brown was one of them. Brown, a Seceder, not only faithfully pastored but faithfully pre-pared pastors for the ministry. It shows in this correspondence. These letters to pastors and those preparing for the pastoral ministry of the church off er a wide range of counsel relating to preaching, life, and character and are fi lled with gospel wisdom and truth. I have been personally edifi ed by reading gems from Brown, and I am glad that ministerial students and fellow pastors will be able to do so more readily. Do not miss this book!”

Exodus (2 volume set)978-1-60178-551-0, Retail Price: $30.00

“Exodus is a great book to write out in full due to its strategic importance in God’s redemptive history. It builds upon Genesis as God’s continuing history of mighty works to bless His covenant people, reveals the God of Israel’s awesome glory in His defeating the false gods of Egypt, shows His righteous hatred of and sovereignty over sin, and richly typifi es and points to the Messiah to come through His presence and worship in the tabernacle and through the ministries of Moses and Aaron, particularly in His offi ces as prophet, priest, and king. Read and write out Exodus thoughtfully and prayerfully, and you will be richly rewarded.”

DR. JOEL R. BEEKE, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids

“I really enjoy this resource because it causes me to slow down and to think about what I’m reading and writing, to meditate on aspects of the Word that I otherwise might just skim. It’s true that I don’t have time to read as big a chunk of Proverbs every day that I usually do, but what time I do have is rich with new insight and meaning.”Jasmine, homeschool student and daughter of Voddie and Bridget Baucham, Spring, Texas

“The Journible I am currently using covers the books of James, 1 and 2 Peter, 1–3 John, and Jude. I have spent the last two weeks slowly making my way through James, and it has opened my eyes to the Scriptures like never before. Not only am I reading the Scripture, but I am writing it, meditating on it, answering thought-provoking ques-tions, and refl ecting on how my life should change to refl ect what the Scriptures teach.”Jeremy, pastor from Jacksonville, Florida

The Doctrine of Fasting and Prayer, and Humiliation for Sin ARTHUR HILDERSHAM

endorsement“Arthur Hildersham (1563–1632) was a major Puritan fi gure who was deeply respected by his contemporaries for his wisdom, learning, and piety. Although Hildersham’s works have been out of print since the seventeenth century, with this reprinting of his sermons from the 1625–1626 plague epidemic in England, Hildersham is no longer silent. During this ‘heavy visitation’ (as his son Samuel described it), Hildersham delivered eight sermons on Psalm 35:13—‘But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled myself with fasting: and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.’ Hildersham’s aim was to encourage God’s people to cultivate a genuine heart of repentance for sin through prayer and fasting. Undoubtedly, Fast-ing, Prayer, and Humiliation for Sin will rouse readers out of spiritual complacency and guide them to the mighty God, who uses even severe providences to humble His people and draw them back to Himself.”GREG SALAZAR, assistant professor of historical theology, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

about the author ARTHUR HILDERSHAM (1563–1632) was an English Puritan who trained at Christ’s College, Cambridge, and served as minister of St. Helen, Ashby.

The Reformation HeritageKJV Study Bible

“This monumental production is surely destined to be of immense help to countless users for years to come. Its scope is extraordinary, its guiding prin-ciples are rock solid, and it is remarkably readable. I know of nothing like it, and I commend it warmly.”

JOHN BLANCHARD, internationally-known author, evangelist and Christian apologist

“The King James Version remains unsurpassed in the dignity, beauty, and infl uence of its Elizabethan cadences. That it is now available in a Reformed study version, packed with textual, theological, and practical helps, is an event to be celebrated. Its publication will help facilitate exposing the present generation to the greatest of all English Bibles.”

Complete in Him: A Guide to Under-standing and Enjoying the Gospel

MICHAEL P. V. BARRETT

endorsement“Barrett correlates what the whole Bible teaches about the gospel in a way that is organized, clear, faithful, and edifying. As he says over and over, right thinking about the gospel pro-duces right living in the gospel. The better you understand the gospel, the better you can enjoy it.”

ANDy NASELLI, assistant professor of New Testament and theology at Bethlehem College and Seminary in Minneapolis

about the author MICHAEL P. B. BARRETT is vice president for academic aff airs/academic dean and professor of Old Testament at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Reformation Women: Sixteenth-Century Figures Who Shaped Christianity’s Rebirth REBECCA VANDOODEWAARD

descriptionIncludes chapters on Anna Reinhard, Anna Adlischweiler, Katharina Schutz, Mar-garethe Blaurer, Marguerite de Navarre, Jeanne d’Albret, Charlotte Arbaleste, Charlotte de Bourbon, Louise de Coligny, Catherine Willoughby, Renee of Ferrara, and Olympia Morata.

endorsement“The modern resurgence of Reformed theology, publishing, and ministry is not just for those with beards. Nor has it ever been, for a healthy Calvinism has always seen women making incredible contributions. With crisp prose showing how biblical femininity resulted in a strength among a dozen Reformed women that was both “tough and ladylike,” Rebecca VanDoodewaard has done all the church—both men and women—a tremendous service in providing this work. She brings the lesser-known ladies from Good’s original Famous Women of the Reformed Church alive for a new generation.”

BARRy yORK, professor of pastoral theology and dean of faculty, Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary

about the author REBECCA VANDOODEWAARD is a wife, mother, and author of several books. She and her husband lived many places before moving to Grand Rapids.
