OPENING TIP } Year four of the Dana Ford era begins with a road test at #4/3 Kansas, which made a run to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament a year ago. } The Tigers - coming off back-to-back winning seasons - are looking for three consecutive winning seasons for the first time since four in a row from 1992-96. } Ford has built the program on defense and rebounding, leading the OVC in scoring defense (67.7 ppg) and defensive field goal percentage (.407) a year ago.

LAST TWO SEASONS AT TSU } Over the last two seasons, the Tigers have gone 37-24 (.607 winning percentage) - 20-11 in ‘15-16; 17-13 in ‘16-17} It was the ninth time with back-to-back winning seasons since moving to D1 prior to 1977-78.} The 37 wins are tied for the third most in a two-year span in TSU’s D1 era and tied for the third most among OVC schools in that stretch. } In the two years prior, TSU went a combined 10-51 (.164 winning percentage) - 5-25 in ‘13-14; 5-26 in ‘14-15} Tennessee State received one vote in the AP Top 25 poll on Nov. 21, 2016 and two votes in the AP Top 25 poll on Nov. 28, 2016.

THE RETURNERS } TSU brings back nine players from last year’s team, including eight who saw the floor. } 46.9 percent of the team’s scoring is back (1,000 / 2,134), led by Darreon Reddick (9.0 ppg) and Delano Spencer (8.4 ppg) - TSU’s third and fourth leading scorers in 2016-17. } 46.9 percent of the team’s rebounding is back (481 / 1,118), highlighted by Ken’Darrius Hamilton (4.0 rpg), who was the team’s fourth-leading rebounder.

DARREON MY WAYWARD SON } Darreon Reddick enters his senior season with 674 points -- 326 points away from 1,000. } Reddick would have to average 11.3 points per game in TSU’s 29 regular season games to reach the milestone. } TSU has had three players reach 1,000 career points under Head Coach Dana Ford (Keron DeShields - ‘15-16; Tahjere McCall - ‘16-17; Jordan Reed - ‘16-17), but Reddick would be the 1st under Ford who played all four years at TSU - the other three transfered from other D-1 programs. } Reddick would be the 29th player to join TSU’s 1,000 point club. } Reddick was Head Coach Dana Ford’s first TSU commitment, signing his NLI in May of 2014.

THE CAPTAINS } In June, Head Coach Dana Ford announced that senior Darreon Reddick, and redshirt juniors Christian Mekowulu and Samson Oyediran will be captains for the 2017-18 season.

NEED TO REPLACE } TSU graduates three starters from last year’s team in Tahjere McCall (14.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 5.1 apg), Wayne Martin (14.4 ppg, 9.2 rpg, 0.8 apg) and Jordan Reed (8.1 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 0.9 apg).} McCall, who broke his own school record for single-season steals last year with 76, earned Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-OVC in each of the last two seasons. He now plays for the Long Island Nets (Brooklyn Nets’ G-League). } Martin was TSU’s top rebounder (9.2 rpg) and a Second Team All-OVC selection in 2016-17. He now plays professionally in Kosovo.

OUT OF THE GATE } The Tigers are 3-0 in season openers under Head Coach Dana Ford. } 11/14/14 - Reinhardt - W, 97-66 } 11/13/15 - Loyola (MD) - W, 86-71 } 11/11/16 - UC Davis - W, 78-64

TSU VERSUS THE BIG 12 } Tennessee State is 0-11 versus teams that currently make up the Big 12. } In games versus Big 12 opponents at the time of the game, TSU is 0-8. } TSU’s last game versus a Big 12 opponent was a 60-40 loss at TCU on 12/29/14.

TSU VERSUS TEAMS RANKED IN THE AP TOP 25 } Tennessee State is 1-34 versus teams in the AP Top 25 since moving to Division I prior to the 1977-78 season. } TSU is 0-2 against the AP Top 25 under Ford (79-36 loss at #8 Virginia - 11/24/14; 65-55 loss at #5 Duke - 12/19/16). } TSU’s lone win over an AP Top 25 team was a 72-68 victory at #9 Murray State - 2/9/12. } Since the win over Murray State in 2012, TSU has lost six in a row to ranked opponents. } TSU is 0-3 versus teams ranked fourth or better in the AP Top 25. } Last time TSU faced a top four team was Nov. 22, 2011 - a 102-69 loss at #1 North Carolina.

TIES TO THE SUNFLOWER STATE } TSU Head Coach Dana Ford worked for Gregg Marshall at Wichita State as a graduate assistant for the 2007-08 season before returning as an assistant coach for the 2011-12 season. } Senior guard Delano Spencer played his first two collegiate seasons at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. } Legendary coach John McLendon, who is in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach and as a contributor, is a Kansas graduate. McLendon led Tennessee A&I to NAIA National Championships in 1957, 1958 and 1959.
