`TITLE : THE APOSTLE PAUL AND THE
COLOSSIAN CHURCHTEXT : COL 1:1-14, 24-29________________________________________________________________
INTRODUCTION
Colosse was a small city of Asia Minor, not too farfrom Laodicea (see 4:16). Paul had never visitedthere and so it is believed that it was Ephaphraswho founded this church while Paul was stayingin Ephesus (Col 1:7; 4:12-13; Acts 19:10). Heapparently wrote the epistle which he was inprison at Rome and sent the letter to them byTychicus (4:7), by whom he also sent theEphesian letter as well as that to Philemon.
A) Paul’s praise of the Colossian church (vs 1-8).1) How they received the Gospel (vs 1-6).
Paul commends the Colossian church inregard to three things:a) Their faith toward the Lord (vs 1-4a)
Col 1:3-4, “We give thanks to God and theFather of our Lord Jesus Christ, prayingalways for you, since we heard of yourfaith in Christ Jesus...”
b) Their love toward each other (v 4b)Col 1:4, “...and of the love which ye haveto all the saints...”
c) Their hope toward the future (vs 5-6).Col 1:5, “For the hope which is laid up foryou in heaven, whereof ye heard before inthe word of the truth of the gospel.”
2) From whom they received the Gospel (vs 7-8).Col 1:7-8, “As ye also learned of Epaphrasour dear fellowservant, who is for you a
faithful minister of Christ; who also declaredunto us your love in the Spirit.”
3) The result of the Gospel in them (v 6).Col 1:6, “Which is come unto you, as it is inall the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as itdoth also in you, since the day ye heard of it,and knew the grace of God in truth.”
B) Paul’s prayer for the Colossian church (vs 9-14).1) That they will filled with the knowledge of
God’s will in all wisdom and applications (v9).Col 1:9, “For this cause we also...do notcease to pray for you, and to desire that yemight be filled with the knowledge of his willin all wisdom and spiritual understanding.”
2) That they will please God (v 10a).Col 1:10, “That ye might walk worthy of theLord unto all pleasing...”
3) That they will bear fruit for God (v 10b).Col 1:10, “...being fruitful in every goodwork...”
4) That they be increasing in the knowledge ofGod (v 10c).Col 1:10, “...and increasing in the knowledgeof God...”
5) That they will be strengthened by God (v11).Col 1:11, “Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto allpatience and longsuffering with joyfulness.”
6) That they will be thankful to God (vs 12-14).Col 1:12, “Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers ofthe inheritance of the saints in light.”a) Thankful for what the Father did
Col 1:13, “Who hath delivered us from thepower of darkness, and hath translated usinto the kingdom of his dear Son.”
b) Thankful for what the Son didCol 1:14, “In whom we have redemptionthrough his blood, even the forgiveness ofsins.”
C) Paul’s ministry to the Colossian church (vs 24-29).Paul has been chosen to reveal God’s secretplan for them.1) The particular mystery (vs 24-27).
Col 1:24-27, “Who now rejoice in mysufferings for you, and fill up that which isbehind of the afflictions of Christ in my fleshfor his body's sake, which is the church:whereof I am made a minister, according tothe dispensation of God which is given to mefor you, to fulfil the word of God; even themystery which hath been hid from ages andfrom generations, but now is made manifestto his saints: to whom God would makeknown what is the riches of the glory of thismystery among the Gentiles; which is Christin you, the hope of glory.”
2) The purpose (vs 28-29).Col 1:28-29, “Whom we preach, warningevery man, and teaching every man in allwisdom; that we may present every manperfect in Christ Jesus: whereunto I alsolabour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.”
