INTRODUCTION TO HIKING SAFETY SEMINAR OCTOBER 12 Learning how to be safe in the backcountry is a major reason many members join the CMC and the RMOTHG. So we’ve developed a one-evening seminar especially for members who want to learn the basics of hiking safety. The Introduction to Hiking Safety seminar will teach you: • the many aspects of safety you need to be aware of, including subjects such as lightning, avalanche, animal

encounters, getting lost (or staying found) and being stranded over night, • how to avoid, prepare for, and how to respond to safety challenges, • an introduction to the extensive program of in-depth, hands-on safety training offered in the CMC Denver Group’s

adult education curriculum. The price is just $5.00 for members and $10.00 for non-members. To learn more or to register for the seminar, go to http://www.hikingdenver.net/schools/introduction-to-hiking-safety

FRIDAY LUNCH JAZZ JAM DAZZLE JAZZ CLUB

OCTOBER 7, 11:00

Join us for a tasty lunch accompanied by top notch live music. Purnell Steen, a local and beloved jazz pianist and his band will be featured.

The performance begins at 11:30, but lunch is served at 11:00. There is no admission charge. Three-course lunch specials are offered for $11.00. Visit

dazzlejazz.com or call 303-839-5100 for more information. Since Dazzle is a listening room, we will need to get our socializing in before the performance.

Dazzle Jazz is located at 930 Lincoln Street in Denver. Street and metered parking is usually available in the immediate area. There are also a few parking lots in the area. Two options are the Civic Center Cultural Complex Garage (at 12th

Ave. and Broadway) and a parking garage at 10th and Grant (a few blocks east of Lincoln).

Please sign up for the event on the CMC website before Wednesday, October 5. Contact Joanne at [email protected] if you have questions.

DENVER GROUP’S ANNUAL DINNER The Annual Dinner of the Denver Group of the Colorado Mountain Club will be held Sunday evening OCTOBER 30 at CMC’s Headquarters in Golden starting with Social Hour at 5:00 PM followed by a catered dinner from Romano's Macaroni Grill and an entertaining presentation by Kevin Cook of the Rocky Mountain Conservancy entitled 'Secret Places in Rocky Mountain National Park'. September - ahhh, a great month for the mountains… get out on a hike or bike to relish this month's opportunities: cooler temps, glorious colors, and hints of snow coming for you ski lovers!

Thank You to our 3 board members whose terms expire at the end of the month: John Pearson - membership coordinator for 2 years, set up electronic voting for our membership Cindy Johnson - secretary for 3 years Martha Delporte - RMOTHG chair for 2 years; prior membership coordinator

John, Cindy and Martha: Thank you for your time, effort, and commitment to the RMOTHG. We all very much appreciate your service as board members these past 3 years.

Thank You to Colleen Landy and Joanie Broder, coordinators for the Turquoise Lake campout. Colleen reports: "Turquoise Lake was a big success. We had 29 campers along with 8 kayaks, and we had a wonderful time paddling on Turquoise Lake as well as taking a beautiful hike to the Native Lake overlook and cycling on the Mineral Belt Trail. The wild flowers were beautiful as was the weather. We enjoyed great food, wine & beer, and most important, good companionship. We are already planning next years' outing and hoping for the same success!"

Thank You to Joan Cloud, social committee, for arranging the Denver Botanic Gardens Tour on August 13th. Attendees were very impressed with the tour's knowledgable docent. In addition to the garden's current Walker Art Center sculpture exhibit, the docent explained the architectural perspective design of the Denver Botanic Gardens and the new Steppes Garden designed to replicate the world's only 4 geographic steppes.

Bobcat News - Due to the ever-growing popularity and increased trip offerings, the Bobcats, under the leadership of Bob Collins and Robbie Monsma, requested and were granted their own section by Denver Group Council beginning October 1st. The RMOTHG wishes the Bobcats continued success in their future mountain adventures.

Annual Dinner Mt. Vernon Sept. 18th - See the details elsewhere in this newsletter. (Sign up now - great people, great speaker, great venue, heavenly desserts - yum!).

Enjoy those mountains!

UPDATE ON RMOTHG JERSEYS

AND JACKETS ~ Kathy Kurtz

I received the shipment of jerseys and wind jackets on August 18. I distributed about 30 of them on the OTHG bike ride the following day. Some of you have contacted me to come pick them up at my house, and any of you may do so. I will also bring them to the Friday Aug. 26th bike ride which starts and ends at Pete’s house. I will not be in town from Aug. 31st – thru Sept. 14th. I will give them to Martha Delporte during that time and you can contact her ([email protected] ) if you want to pick them up from her. And if you haven’t been able to get them by then, I will have them at the

RMOTHG annual meeting/dinner on Sunday Sept. 18th. I have heard from a few of you recently who would like to order, but weren’t in on the first order. Please email me at the address in the last line of this article with your order or questions. From now on, we can order at the wholesale price, however I need to have a total of 20+ orders each time I submit an order. I still have the sample jerseys and jackets I ordered in a variety of sizes. I highly recommend trying before ordering because this is custom made clothing and cannot be returned.

Wholesale pricing: Unisex (Men’s) & Women's SHORT sleeve $43 Unisex (Men’s) & Women's LONG sleeve $49 Unisex Windjackets $51 For detailed information and for the design on the jerseys and jackets, refer to the April RMOTHG newsletter and/or the company website address at http://www.freespiritwear.com/ Remember! Order or contact me at [email protected]

Scotland’s West Highland Way and Optional Ben Nevis Climb Hike Scotland’s West Highland Way for 95 miles beside lochs, waterfalls, and craggy mountains in the Scottish Highlands. This famous route is walked by over 50,000 people each year, making it the most popular long distance walk in Scotland. The path uses ancient roads, including drovers’ roads, military roads and old coaching roads and we will walk the traditional route from south to north to the foot of Scotland’s (and the U.K.’s) highest peak, Ben Nevis. Weather permitting, options after completing the West Highland Way include a climb to the summit of “the Ben” (4,409 feet), or an excursion on the West Highland Railway/Ferry to Mallaig and Armadale. While hiking will be the trip’s focus, the group will also tour medieval Edinburgh, Stirling (famous for being the home of William Wallace), the Eliean Donan Castle in the Scottish Highlands, and a Scotch distillery.

Mt. Kilimanjaro & Mt. Meru Climbs, Tanzania This will be a new variation on previous CMC trips to Kilimanjaro. First, we will warm up and acclimatize with a four day climb of Mt. Meru, 14,968’, 4562 M. Mt. Meru is just West of Kilimanjaro, near Arusha, Tanzania and there we will see amazing views of Kilimanjaro. Then for the main event, we will climb Kilimanjaro (19,340’), during a 6-day climb on the Rongai Route on the North side of the mountain.

CYCLING

Hill Topics SEPT 2016 P of 5 9

September is the last month of the regular RMOTHG cycling season. We’ll have “spontaneous rides” on Fridays through the fall season as the weather allows. This summer we have had fun with new and old friends.

Our rides are usually about 20 to 30 miles at a speed of 10 to 12 mph in the mornings and finish with an optional lunch at a nearby restaurant. Occasionally, we’ll have a leader for a slower group of riders. Watch for notification of this slower rider group in the weekly emails. Most of our trips are on paved, level bike paths. Occasionally we encounter some hills and gravel trails.

The essential items for participating are plenty of water, necessary tools to repair a flat tire (replacement tube for your tire size), appropriate clothing for changes in the weather, ID and a medical card. The wearing of a helmet is mandatory.

Email notices are sent out several days prior to the excursions to describe the weekly ride. The meeting time is usually 8:30 am with departure at 9:00 am. An optional lunch follows at a nearby restaurant. Guests are allowed with the signing of a waiver form. Guests may participate in two of our activities before joining the RMOTHG section and the Denver group of the CMC.

If you are interested in riding, please contact Pete Spandau by email at [email protected] requesting to have your name added to the cycling list. Only RMOTHG members will be added to the list and you’ll receive weekly email

reminders to sign up at www.cmc.org.

See you on the trails, Pete Spandau

September is here which means aspen hikes, cooler temps, September glow! This month, we offer our annual Classic Kenosha trips to both sides mid-September for aspen dazzle, but you’ll see aspen on other hikes, too. We still hike a casual pace for about two hours, enjoy lunch and warm sunshine in a pretty spot, preferably under golden aspen, return, and relish our day at optional after-hike snack stops. Cooler conditions means adapting our packs and gear to fit the weather, but after hiking hard all hot summer, mellow September sounds wonderful!

If you’re new, & want to receive the Friday emails listing the following Wed hikes, email

[email protected]. Jeff sends emails Friday evenings, 5 – 6 p.m. with links to CMC where you read trip descriptions, see what trip best fits your skills/interests, and sign up for trip you want. Feel free to call leaders if you need more trip details. Hiking in Colorado autumn is one of the best experiences ever, so hope you join us on the trail!SEPTEMBER HIKE SCHEDULE:WED, SEP 7: 1. FROM THE BOBCATS ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITTEE:

We are grateful to the RMOTHG Board and members for their support and encouragement. They caught our vision, recognized the unmet need, supplied our budget, and encouraged us every step of the way during our start-up year. Thanks, friends!

As before, our mission remains to coordinate participating leaders to ensure as many difficult B and C trips as possible each month for our mostly age-50+ constituents. We prefer mostly weekday "B Difficult" and “C” Hikes and Difficult Snowshoes, and trips with 12 or fewer participants.

Although the Section will have “members,” our trips are non-exclusive. We will continue to welcome all CMC members, regardless of age or Bobcats membership, to sign up for any Bobcat trip. This is the last time the Bobcats trip list will appear in Hill Topics. If you on the RMOTHG Bobcats Mailing List, you will remain on the Bobcats own Mailing List unless you opt-out. If you receive the monthly Bobcats Newsletter, you already ARE on the mailing list. If you are not on either list, but wish to be, or if you have any questions or thoughts about any of this news, please let us know at [email protected]
