Thanks 2011 Winter Camping School InstructorsThe 2011 Winter Camping School completed another great year of teaching and camping adventures due to the many tireless volunteer instructors who are willing to give of their time, their extensive winter knowledge and their sense of humor. This combination is what always leads to a successful session and positive responses from students who complete this school. I personally want to thank each of these instructors, both those with many years of contribution to WCS as well as our new instructors who make the school so much easier. Thanks to the following for all their time and effort: Tim Kish, Gyorgy Kereszti, Peter Sustr, Ken Gurvin, Dave Covill, John Aldag, Brian Jones, Sarah Thompson, Lisa Roth, Dan Glatterer, Boyd Reyburn, Chuck Porter, Andy Westmeyer, Kent McCreary.

Wilderness Trekking School (WTS) is for those looking for adventure – AND – for those who just want to enjoy the scenery. WTS is a great introduction to the Colorado Mountain Club and a place to meet new friends. WTS is Colorado Mountain Club’s largest school, a comprehensive course on mountain hiking. Students are all ages, from 18 to 80. If you’re new to hiking, WTS gives you the opportunity to learn how to travel safely – and with confidence – in the backcountry. If you’re an experienced hiker, WTS gives you a chance to review, to enhance your skills, and possibly to fill in some gaps. WTS also fulfills one of the requirements to obtain a Denver Group C hiker classification and to attend Basic Mountaineering School. The course consists of five Tuesday night lectures, four field days, and a graduation hike. Students are divided into groups of 10-12 people, based on hiking pace, conditioning, and prior experience. Instructor teams consist of a senior instructor and two assistant instructors. Students have the opportunity to learn techniques of safe backcountry travel and to practice in a non-competitive, non-confrontational setting. Students plan and complete a graduation hike with their field group. WTS is a great place to learn and practice new skills, make new friends, and become a safe backcountry traveler.

Call for Wilderness Trekking School InstructorsThe Wilderness Trekking School Committee (WTSC) is looking for instructors for the Fall 2011 session that begins on Tuesday, September 13th. Butch did his first ever bank job down in Telluride. When things with the law got a little too “hot,” the boys often would head up to remote and beautiful Browns Park to lay low until the “heat” died down. Local folks there described the pair as being “perfect gentlemen.” Here’s your chance to see some of the same places visited by Butch & Sundance as we do our annual stewardship & trailwork weekend with the Craig office of the BLM. We drive up on Friday for a car camp in Irish Canyon (located 80 miles west of Craig & 80 miles south of Rock Springs, WY). If we have time, we’ll drive over to Sandwash Basin to look for wild horses. On Saturday, we will work with BLM staff in & around Irish Canyon. We’ll do a hike in the area on Sunday morning before returning home. For more information and to signup, visit the Home Page of the CMC web site. Click on Programs and then on Service Projects. Then scroll down. For other information, you can also contact Lisa Cashel at: [email protected].
