Proud Member of
2016
Welcome to the Club! Every year we ask SEESA members to nominate members whom they feel are deserving of special recognition for their outstanding volunteer service to SEESA and its members.
Members are nominated in 2 categories: Leadership - someone who has taken a leadership role, either as a board member or activity liaison, perhaps someone who has started a club, organized a special event or chaired a committee, and someone whose service has gone above and beyond. Then there is the category of “Behind the Scenes contribution” to SEESA - someone who has been less visible, but no less important, to the day to day operations of SEESA.
The winners are chosen by a committee that includes the chair of the membership committee, a former winner, and the Executive Director. This year’s Honorary Lifetime Membership recipients are:
Al Thomas - Leadership Walter Klepechek - Behind the Scenes
Congratulations to both of you!

From the President’s Desk…
A very good April to everyone. Thank you to all the members who took the time to come out and help us at the AGM. We updated the bylaws, accepted a new budget, (almost) learned how to conduct an assembly meeting and introduced our new Board members. Everyone enjoyed the wine and cheese afterwards and I got to talk with many of the participants. I’m looking forward to bringing the new board forward and continuing to position SEESA at the forefront of Centers in Edmonton. Many of you were influential in your business lives and we could use your knowledge to help make SEESA even better. Volunteer to work on one of the numerous committees that enable the running of SEESA, or (gasp) help decide the directions we take by working on the Board. New ideas are what help keep us young. Share yours.

money
get a charitable receipt for $91.25
If all 1400 members did this we‘d have $127,750
We could have our roof in time for the rainy season

Thanks to everyone who attended
our AGM. It is always nice to see everyone
working together to make our association
great.
Welcome to our new Board
Members, Joan Brady, Norma Marion,
Linda Smeland and Marlen Shustov — I
look forward to working with you all.
The new bylaws have been sent to
Corporate Registry for approval. As you
know I sit on several committees and I
have never enjoyed a committee as much
as I enjoyed the bylaw committee. We
had wonderful discussions, we did
research, we agreed, disagreed and
came out with a really great document.
Truly my hat is off to these dedicated
members for a really wonderful job.
Congratulations and thanks for a job well
done Lois Gangl, Eric Solash, Sheila Clifford-MacKay & Gordon Block.
Back in the Fall the
Board of Directors decided
to rename our Dining Room.
I am pleased to share with
you that the Dining Room
has been renamed—The Tillie
Poulsen Dining Room (or Tillie's Café). Tillie
was a member of the founding board and
was SEESA’s first female president! Even
after she moved away she always returned
for special events. Sadly Tillie passed away
a few years ago. May her spirit of good
works and laughter continue to reign!
Congratulations to our newest
Honorary Life Time Members: Allan
Thomas and Walter Klepachek. Thanks for
all your very hard work and dedication.

You may have noticed in the Spring Program Guide the Card Makers and
the Quilters & Crafters have been
reclassified from Clubs to Community Contributors.
These groups, while socializing, meet to make goods for SEESA to sell. As
Community Contributors they give as they are able for the good of our
SEESA community.
For example: Marcelle makes Teddy Bears with materials she provides and we sell them for $25 each. Sometimes
we sell 5 bears per month - that’s $1875 per year. Wow!
How are you contributing to your centre?
A team is not a group of people who work together. A team is a group of people who trust each other. Simon Sinek

Melody Singers!!
The Melody Singers are on the road again! We find nothing more enjoyable than making music with our friends, and to our friends! (apologies to
Willie Nelson)
The first stop was at the Jubilee Nursing Home where Alida Van Braiden did the honours as MC. Dee Litke, Linda Chernetski and Tom McGovern sang “ You Will Never Know” and “Sentimental Journey”. Jackie Rawson sang “Scarlett Ribbons” and clogged to “Sweet, Sweet Smile”. At Hardisty Nursing Home, we were chaired by Kay Yawarski, with the inimitable Tom McGov-ern singing “When I’m Sixty Four” and “Yellow Submarine”. Dee Turner introduced “The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane” - what a gal! We enjoyed Providence Center next. Vivian Lundgren was MC. The story “The Barn Dance” was read by Dorothy Munro. Johann and Alida Van Braeden sang “ What a Wonderful World” and “I Believe” . The next stop on our road trip was Shepard's Care Millwoods. Pearl Lauber kept things moving with her role as MC. Linda Chernetski, accompanied on the violin by Martin
Molzan sang “Lets Call the Whole Thing Off”. Vivian Lundgren and Ben Lauber sang “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” and “Don’t let the Stars get in Your Eyes” Laurel Heights was our last Roadhouse for this report. Tom McGovern chaired this presentation. At the breaks, Joe Browering played “Fairest Isle” and “To a Wild Rose” on the Flugel Horn. Lorraine Kalis and Walter Leckelt sang “Mansion Over the Hilltop” and “Daddy Sang Bass” with Lorraine accompanying on the omnichord. These breaks give the choir a chance to rest; but there is no rest for Anne Marshall who accompanies those who sing during those times; always a stellar performance! Last, but by no means least, we want to thank Ben and Pearl Lauber for transporting the keyboard to our performances over the last several years. Also kudos to Merrill Sandhal, who has taken over this task and also brings and sets up our sound system for each sing-out. This is appreciated by our audience as well. It has been a great road trip this time around.
Respectfully submitted; Elsie Combs

Home Services
We have had a number of new service providers sign up! This year I do actually have a number of window washers, as well as people willing to clean gutters and eaves!!
The other day someone called me for a service provider to do some yard work. I gave her the names and numbers of three providers. About an hour later the same person called me back to tell me all the service providers I gave her charged too much money for the service. She could find people on Kijiji who charged much less. This is often the case that you will find someone online who is willing to work for less and sometimes they do great work. It can also mean - They do not have insurance, they do not have references, they do not have proper training, etc. etc.
While not everyone on my list has insurance or train-ing, you know their references are solid, and while not perhaps the cheapest, they will be around to stand behind their work. You always have to make the choice that makes economic sense for you - but when shopping online be very careful. Celeste Nicholson Home Services

7 STEPS TO A SMOOTHER MOVE FOR SENIORS
OUTREACH News! Friendly Visitor Program Training is well underway, with three enthusiastic volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact me. Training sessions will be provided when there are at least 4 or more people interested. If you know someone you think is isolated and would benefit from regular contact, please let me know! The purpose of Friendly Visiting is to reach isolated seniors, help reduce their feelings of isolation, improve their mental health and may reduce the cost of medical care.
Social Circle We have welcomed several newcomers to Social Circle. A few of them come once a month, others have become weekly regulars! We have room for more participants and more ideas for discussion during Social Circle.
Home Visits Part of Outreach services is providing home visits to seniors needing help with forms, assessment for basic equipment, information and support. Please contact me if you, or

Local Food Matters! The Just Harvest emerges this spring in Holyrood
The Just Harvest connects people, local growers and innovative programming to increase food literacy and build community. They approached the Holyrood Community League, SEESA, and neighbourhoods Schools about ways to introduce locally grown food to improve health and as community builder. As a result of these talks The Just Harvest invites you to come and learn more about community food security and how citizens can make a difference.
Come share a meal and learn about a Holyrood Community Food Center which includes community kitchen programs, urban and local grow spaces, educational opportunities and a common space for connections and conversations to happen, bringing about solutions and effecting change from the ground up.
Join us April 19th as we celebrate together with local food, art, and music in the Holyrood Mennonite Church which has offered their lower level to hold this event. Highlighting the event is an African female acapella quartet along with other musical guests and a first exhibit of a local artist. Come and enjoy this celebration of local food and culture as we learn to grow the Just Harvest together. Everyone welcome!

You Have Earned Your
Home Equity!
If you're like many other 55+ Canadians, much of what you own fits into two categories—the equity in your home and the money you've saved. Chances are, the value of your home has grown over the years and makes up a good portion of your net worth. While having a home that has built value is a positive, you typically can’t spend that value unless you sell it. That is something many homeowners simply do not want to do.
That’s where CHIP comes in: A CHIP Reverse Mortgage lets you change the home equity and savings balance by turning some of your equity into cash. Unlike many mortgage-based financial products, you’re not obligated to make any payments until you choose to move or sell.
What makes this program work is that participants depending on their age can only ever take up to 55% of the value of their homes, which ensures you have access to the cash you want now and also the security you need for the future. Let me design a funding plan that works for you!
