With more than 100 lakes and over 1,300 beach-side campsites and cabins, offering 70 per cent of Alberta’s Class A beaches, the Lac La Biche region is naturally rich. With a variety of lakes in our region, there is enough surface area for those looking to hit the waves for some fast-paced water sports, or reconnect with nature during a tranquil paddle in the back-country of Lakeland Provincial Park.

Visitors come annually to our pristine surroundings for camping, boating, fishing, bird watching, canoeing, cross country skiing, archery, and many other outdoor activities. No matter what the weather is, there are activities for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy the sun, mud, or snow.

For cultural explorers there is always something new to discover. Our region takes pride in its cultural diversity. We celebrate and honour our past through interactive museums, rodeos, pow wows, and community gatherings featuring our culinary backgrounds and performing arts.

Regional EventsRain or shine, hot or cold, it seems like there is always something going on in the Lac La Biche region!

To beat the winter chills, visitors can take part in hay rides, fun ice fishing tournaments, cross country skiing in the afternoons, and community hockey games that take over rinks carved on Lac la Biche. There are several annual curling bonspiels and hockey tournaments for teams to register and compete.

During the warmer months, residents and visitors alike partake in several summer festivals in the region, including various rodeos, traditional pow wows, cultural community celebrations, and more!

The firework displays for Canada Day, the 54th annual Lac La Biche Pow Wow Days during the August long weekend, and the annual Kikino Silver Birch Rodeo & Celebration Days in mid-August are always memorable. These bright displays are not only in the sky, but also reflected back onto the lake.

If you’re looking to see traditional Aboriginal dancing, the Heart Lake and Beaver Lake Pow Wows are two events that proudly showcase the culture, talent, and artwork that go into the extravagant costumes.

The annual rodeos in Lac La Biche, Kikino, and Buffalo Lake invite professional riders and ropers to compete, providing entertainment for all fans. Kikino also hosts its pony chariot and chuckwagon race the same weekend as their rodeo.

And don’t forget you’re always welcome to get dirty at the Plamondon Mud Bog, where getting a little muddy is only a small part of the weekend activities!

non-serviced sites to suit your camping preferences. campsites are available in a variety of sizes and locations, whether you are bringing your Rv or looking for a backcountry tenting experience.

Beaver Lake

The campground has a range of facilities for visitors including showers, a boat launch, a playground, an on-site store, a day-use beach, and a swimming area. Firewood is available for purchase.

Just past Beaver Lake Provincial Park Campground, 6km east of Lac La Biche on HWY 663. There are 5 sites with water and power hook-ups available. Firewood is provided at no cost, and there is a boat launch, with some group sites having easy access to beach and swimming areas.

The campground resides within Beaver Lake Cree Nation, 6km south from Lac La Biche on HWY 36, then continue following the signs another 12km to get to the campground. Offering 271 sites with a variety of water and power hook-ups and a dumping station on-site. Shower facilities, boat launch, playground, with beaches and swimming areas at various points throughout the campground.

Just 1km west and 2km north of Caslan, which is 46 km west of Lac La Biche on HWY 663 A first come, first served, community-maintained campsite. A trail system just outside the campground offers some of the best ATVing trails and berry patches in the area.

Beaver Lake

Only 2km east along HWY 663. Turn south onto Young’s Beach Road and follow for 2km to the campground. You will find 85 sites with water, swage, and power hook-ups available. Firewood is provided at no cost, with amenities like showers, a playground, boat launch, boat rentals, and a large beach and swimming area for everyone to enjoy.

Found in Lakeland Provincial Park Recreation Area, this campground is 16km south and 32km east of Lac La Biche. There are 20 non-serviced campsites; firewood is provided at no cost, with a boat launch, swimming area, and water-pump services available. It is a tranquil lake with an abundance of birds and wildlife.

With access points northeast and southeast of Lac La Biche, Lakeland Provincial Park offers one of Alberta’s only canoe circuits and a backcountry camping experience. With trails for hiking and biking, you can traverse through this area by foot, biking, or swimming. There are 38 rustic campgrounds available throughout the trail and canoe network.

Just 13km northeast of Lac La Biche of HWY881 is the only island Provincial Park campground in Alberta with full amenities. There are 72 sites, some with power hook-ups and a dump station on-site. Firewood is available for purchase, with several other amenities on-site including showers, playgrounds, a boat launch, an on-site store, trails available for hiking and biking, bird watching platforms, and several beaches and swimming areas around the island. New in 2015, the park now also has cabins for rent year-round.

ATVs are not permitted to be driven in the campground; however a staging area and miles of trails are available just outside of the campground entrance.

There are 93 sites, with a water-pump available, and an on-site dumping station. Firewood provided at no additional cost. There is a playground, beach, and swimming area, along with free life-jackets. ATVs are not permitted to be driven in the campground, however a staging area and miles of trails are available just outside of the campground entrance.

Whitefish Lake

This campground is 43km south of Lac La Biche on HWY 36, and 7km east from the turn-off. There are 206 seasonal stalls with 30 available for reservation anytime. Firewood is available for purchase with other amenities like showers, a playground, a boat launch, an on-site store, and a large beach and swimming area. ATVs are permitted in the campground, with several trails outside of the campground. For more information on the trails, ask the on-site managers.

Located at the intersection of Highways 36 and 55, approximately 220 km northeast of Edmonton, the hamlet of Lac La Biche is the regional centre for business, offering many services such as a number of hotels,

restaurants, banks, retail, grocery, and unique boutiques and clothing

stores. Although the population is approximately 3,000 within the hamlet boundaries, this increases to 6,000 during business hours due to people coming to work and school. The hamlet of Lac La Biche is one of the main urban centres in Lac La Biche

County.

The hamlet also hosts a majority of events in the region, such as National

Aboriginal Day in late June and the annual Lac La Biche Pow Wow and Fish Derby during the August long weekend.

The Lakeland Agricom on the Arthur and Anita Cadieux Ag Grounds is home to the Lac La Biche Agricultural Society’s outdoor rodeo grounds, where several rodeos are hosted each year and the weekly farmer’s market is held.

Located off Highway 55, 30 kilometres west of Lac La Biche, the hamlet of over 300 people serves as a service centre for the surrounding agricultural community. In 2013, Plamondon was designated the first bilingual community in Alberta and recognized for its Francophone heritage and French culture. Plamondon has an active retail trade and recreational, cultural and educational services.

Plamondon has a unique cultural history, which you can see at a small museum in the hamlet itself. The Plamondon Museum is full of artifacts, antique instruments, and much more.

Plamondon hosts a variety of cultural and historical events throughout the year that are packed full of fun, activities, and musical entertainment! The local radio station, Radio Plamondon 92,1, organized by the l’Association de Tous les Francophones de l’Alberta (ACFA) Régionale de Plamondon – Lac La Biche, hosts several francophone musicians in the community throughout the year.

Be sure to check out the Hockey en Fête celebration in March and the Plamondon Mud Bogs for a fun, down & dirty experience in late August.

Plamondon


Traditionally this area was settled by trappers and hunters, and later progressed to have logging and agricultural-based economy. To this day, it’s a popular destination for hunting, trapping, fishing, and outdoor recreation. This tight knit community’s Agricultural & Recreation Society hosts annual rodeo events for local and professional cowboys and cowgirls of all ages. Each event is a great time, complete with family activities.

For cultural explorers looking to find out more about the Rich Lake area’s history, the Rich Lake & District Pioneer Museum has much to discover. Showcasing the history of trapping and homesteading, a log cabin is dedicated to the early trappers of the area, complete with a set of snowshoes inside donated by Herbert Erickson that have been around the world with 2000 miles to spare.

Other notable displays at the Pioneer Museum include the original first gas pump and Post Office from Rich Lake, the Parker family stove, salt rocks and a bear tooth. Some of these natural historical pieces date back to 150-200 million years ago with human artifacts dating back to the early 1900s. The museum is open May to September annually and welcomes all visitors to see the antiques, collectables, historical preservations, restorations, and dedication mural for the trappers and loggers.

Hylo/VeniceThe first settlers of the Hylo/Venice area arrived from Edmonton in July 1914. Bringing only a few tools and tents, and enough supplies to last three weeks, the Italian pioneers decided to stay in the area and registered their homesteads.

In 2014, Hylo and Venice celebrated their centenary, with the Italian ancestry still prevailing in this rural Alberta area. To date, the area still hosts several community events. Every March there is a Quad Rally followed up in June with the Venice Picnic that offers a traditional home-made spaghetti supper.

At the end of August is the Hylo-Venice Harvest Days that has a pig catch and the King and Queen of Harvest Days competition. With several active community groups, the area continues to celebrate their unique culture and share it with visitors!


Buffalo Lake &Kikino Metis Settlements

Buffalo Lake and Kikino Métis Settlements are two of eight Métis Settlements in Alberta. These two areas are in the heart of a vibrant agricultural zone, offering plenty of natural resources and Métis culture.

Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement hosts several annual community events featuring the artists, musicians, dancers, and culinary tastes of their settlement. Rodeos are a popular event in the region. The Buffalo Lake Riding Club organizes a rodeo qualifier for the Northern American Indian Rodeo Association Finals.

Kikino Métis Settlement also hosts an annual rodeo – which includes Chuckwagon Races and ends with a magnificent firework display over Whitefish Lake. Another unique event hosted at the settlement is the Triple ‘R’ Triathlon, featuring the traditional skills of running, rowing canoes, and riding horses. This event is a solo and team competition offering various competing classes for different ages of competitors. Experience spending the night in a traditional teepee or log cabin, or bring your own camping supplies to enjoy the outdoors.


Beaver Lake Cree Nation & Heart Lake First Nation

Beaver Lake and Heart Lake Cree Nations are full of traditional Aboriginal cultural celebrations throughout the year.

Both First Nations host an annual traditional Pow Wow competition with dancing and drumming.

The grand entries to both events are very moving: you feel the vibration from the drums beating, hear the jingling of bells from the dresses, all while the sights of vibrant hand-made costumes dance around you.

Other popular events held at both First Nations include the annual quad rallies where riders and drivers from across the province come to ride trails through the countryside. With plenty of pristine vistas and good mud spots, you may need and extra hand from other riders to pull you through!

The rallies always include local entertainment and a tasty traditional supper.

The Aboriginal Artifacts collection is housed at the Portage College campus, established in 1968. The College is situated in the beautiful County of Lac La Biche, Alberta which offers the chance to explore some of western Canada’s oldest history. We are extremely proud of our Aboriginal roots and we count ourselves fortunate that we are able to promote Aboriginal art and culture.

For those wanting more home-grown flavor, a trip to the Lac La Biche region is in order.

The Farmer’s Market in Lac La Biche is held weekly on Friday afternoons at the Lakeland Agricom (on the Arthur and Anita Cadieux Ag Grounds) just east of the Lac La Biche County Rural Office along HWY 881 bypass. It runs from mid-March until mid-December. Each Saturday throughout the summer, the community of Plamondon also hosts a market at the Philip Menard Cultural Centre. Come and check out the homemade goodies such as homemade preserves, desserts, breads, selection of meats, fresh flowers, crafts and much, much more! There really is something for everyone at the Farmer’s Market. We look forward to seeing you there!

Some farms and u-picks in the area, like Shady Lane Berry Farm, invite visitors to come visit and experience the freshness of organic, hand-picked produce. Whether you want to pick your own, or purchase some fresh berries, this is a great opportunity to see how and where our food comes from!

In 2015, the first bottle of beer was sold from our local craft brewery, based near Plamondon. Fat Unicorn Brewery is building its name and reputation for its small batch, fresh brewed craft beers. The beers from Fat Unicorn Brewery are available for sale in many stores and restaurants in Alberta, and they will begin tours and tastings on-site at the brewery in 2016.

Whether you are looking for a one-day hike or for a week-long canoe voyage, the Lakeland Backcountry offers several unique outdoor experiences with guaranteed adventure and miles of pristine vistas to sooth your soul. Just make sure not to forget the essentials, as it’s only you and Mother Nature during your visit.

With the only canoe circuit in Alberta, the 38 kilometre paddle through Jackson, Kinnard, Blackett, and McGuffin Lake is an exceptional experience. Whether you decide to conquer all the portages or paddle out to a remote island and camp for a few days, the lakes’ clear water allows you to float along while watching the fish swim below. Most days camping in this area start with the call of a loon and end with the flapping wings and splashing feet of a pod of pelicans landing on the water for a night’s rest.

The Lakeland Provincial Park boasts over 45 kilometres of trails for biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing. Shaw Lake has a looped trail circuit system so you can plan to extend or minimize your route throughout the day.

If you’re looking for some motorized fun, the Lakeland Provincial Park Recreation Area has over 140 kilometres of shared trails for motorized ATVs and snowmobiles. Many of these trails have been upgraded so that ATV use does not degrade the trail and the landscape.

By staying on the designated trails and practicing responsible operation of ATVs, you will help to ensure that Lakeland Provincial Park remains a great place to visit. Maps of the Lakeland Provincial Park & Recreation Area are available at many local tourism offices to help plan your backcountry experience.

Nestled along the southeastern shores of Lac la Biche, the public golf course offers 18 holes of challenge and picturesque beauty. It is one of northern Alberta’s most pristine golf courses: a true marriage of recreation and the environment.

The front 9 is ideal for course newcomers, offering wide fairways and beautiful vistas. The back 9 poses a few more challenges with the rough squeezing both sides of most fairways, forcing accurate drives and approach shots.

After the round, shoot for the Pelican Grill, the 19th hole, located on the second level of the clubhouse. Here you can sit on the

The magnificent landscapes of the Lac La Biche region create a prime habitat for a spectacular variety of birds, offering the best of bird watching opportunities.

Designated a bird sanctuary in 1920 by the Government of Canada, Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park and its islands are home to over 190 species during high birding season. The shorelines of Lac la Biche have become a popular nesting area for its various shorebirds, including waterfowl, geese, swans, American White Pelicans, Double-crested Cormorants, Herring Gulls, Ring-Billed Gulls, Great Blue Herons, Commons Terns, Black Terns, Foster’s Terns, Red-necked Grebes, and Eared Grebes.

Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park is located on an island accessible via a 2.5 kilometre causeway and provides many lookout points, 7 kilometres of walking/biking trails throughout the Old Growth Forests on the island, and a viewing scope for birding. Pelicans and cormorants are visible on Pelican Island. The shoreline of Birch Island and Currant Island, a short

distance from the north shore of the Big Island, are another popular gathering

area for shorebirds.

On calm summer mornings, bird watchers can rise with the sun and access by canoe the isolated Natural Areas of Black Fox Island and High (Shorty’s) Island, on the lake, which separate

the west and the east arms of the lake.

Home to many neo-tropical migrants, these birds are most

watchable in mating season when showing off their vibrant plumage and numerous calls.

Annual bird counts are held in May and December. You can join the counting in Lac La Biche and find out how many of the species you can see, hear, and name.

Unlike the bright nights in an urban centre, the bright nights of the Lac la Biche Region are fuelled naturally by solar storms. It may seem strange to share things you can only see in the dark, but like thousands of others, once you’ve gazed up into a starry night sky above the Lac La Biche region, you’ll see the light.

If you can get past the fact this promotion is the exact opposite of one for a white sand beach in the middle of summer at the height of a sunny day, then our northern lights await you!

The best time to see the northern lights is through the cooler months of November to April, so put away your bathing suit and leave your sunscreen at home. Grab a parka for a winter visit to the Lac La Biche region.

Lucky for you, one of the best places to see the dancing lights of fantastic colors is from the vantage point of one of our many lakes.

If the northern lights aren’t dancing on the night you are looking for them, or you are visiting mid-summer, why not try to count shooting stars or satellites in the night sky or locate some of the constellations?

Away from the city lights and other metropolitan distractions, the sky looks closer, the stars seem brighter, and it sure looks like there’s plenty more of them.

There’s just as much fun to be had playing on our lakes in the winter as in the summer. Activities in our winter months take the chill out of the cold season’s air.

For those who love to fish year-round, there are plenty of great spots to go ice fishing. A line, a few hooks, and some bait are all you need to have tight lines all day as you catch several keepers!

For the land-lovers, there are plenty of snow-covered trails in Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park and and Shaw Lake cross-county ski area. They offer miles of natural beauty as you glide through the snow.

If a little more speed is to your liking, then the lakes and backcountry of Lakeland Provincial Park & Recreation Area has snowmobile trails for every type of rider.

The winter months also include several community events like curling bonspiels, hockey tournaments, the Carnaval d’Hiver with activities like Cabane à Sucre, the motor-revving Winter Festival of Speed, and the Lac La Biche Kinsmen On The Pond Hockey Tournament with eight rinks cleared on Lac La Biche lake. The Bold Center also offers snowshoe rentals that can be rented for daily usage or over the weekend to explore the trails and lakeshores in the area.


Visit this magnificent 230,000 sq. ft. multi-use recreation facility for all of your fitness, sport and social needs! The Bold Center offers twin NHL-size arenas, home to the Portage College Voyageurs and several teams from the Lac La Biche Minor Hockey League. There is always ice in Lac La Biche!

The facility also include twin fieldhouses, a four sheet curling rink, a 10,000 sq. ft. fitness/weight room, a 200-metre indoor track, a community hall, multi-purpose/meeting spaces, and a child mind space. Outside, there are two tennis courts and basketball courts for those who prefer to play in the sun.

Drop-in rates and select equipment are available. When you have exhausted yourself from activity, check out the various food outlets and relax with free Wi-Fi in the common areas or the Stuart McPherson Public Library.
