With more than 100 lakes and over 1,300 beach-side campsites and cabins

offering 70% of Alberta’s Class A beaches, Lac La Biche County is host to many recreational activities.

You can hit the waves for some fast-paced water sports, walk or bike over 22 kilometres of paved-trails, tour the backcountry trails by cross-country skiing, bike, or ATV, or just kick back and relax for an evening around a warm campfire.

Annually, visitors come to our pristine surroundings for camping, boating, waterskiing, fishing, hiking, bird watching,

and many other outdoor activities.

We are a community that takes pride in our cultural diversity, celebrating it through various activities and events throughout the year with several rodeos, pow wows, and community gatherings.

For those who are looking for an adrenaline-rush, we have open events for individuals to register in such as the Winter Festival of Speed hosting on-ice car, sled, and ATV races, and in summer Plamondon hosts their annual Mud Bog competition where the tires spin and the mud flies.

Young’S BeaCh CamPground2km east along highway 663 east of Lac La Biche, turn south onto Young’s Beach Road and follow for 2km to campground. 85 sites with water, sewage, and power hook-ups available. JaCkSon, kinnard, BLaCkett, mCguFFinWith access points northeast and southeast of Lac La Biche, Lakeland Provincial Park offers one of Alberta’s canoe circuits and backcountry camping experiences. With trails for hiking and biking you can traverse through this area by foot or water. 38 rustic campgrounds are available on a first-come basis. create a prime habitat for a spectacular at variety of birds offering the best of bird watching opportunities.

Designated a Bird Sanctuary in 1920 by the Government of Canada, Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park and its islands are home to over 190 species during high birding season. Lac La Biche Lake has become a popular staging and nesting area for its various shorebirds, waterfowl, geese, swans, American White Pelicans, Double-crested Cormorants, Herring gulls, Ring-Billed Gulls, Great Blue Herons, Commons Terns, Black Terns, Foster’s Terns, Red-necked Grebes and Eared Grebes.

Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park is located on an island accessible via a 2.5 kilometre causeway and provides many lookout points, 7 kilometres of walking trails throughout the old growth forests on the island, and a viewing scope for birding. Pelicans and Cormorants are visible on Pelican Island. The shoreline of Birch Island and Currant Island, a short distance from the north shore of the Big Island, are another popular gathering area for shorebirds.

On calm summer mornings bird watchers can rise with the sun and gain access by canoe to the isolated islands designated as Natural

Areas, Black Fox Island and High (Shorty’s) Island, on the lake which separate the west and the east arms of the lake. Home to many neo-tropical migrants, these birds are most watchable when displaying their mating behaviour: showing off their vibrant plumage and voicing their numerous bird calls.

Annual counts are held in May and December, you can join the counting in Lac La Biche, and find out how many of the species you can see, hear, and name.

will help to ensure that Lakeland Provincial Park remains a great place to visit.”

The Lakeland Provincial Park boasts over 45 kilometres of trails for biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing. Shaw Lake has a looped circuit system so you can plan to extend or minimize your route throughout the day.

If you’re looking for some motorized fun, the Lakeland Provincial Park Recreation Area has over 140 kilometres of shared trails for motorized ATVs and snowmobiles. Many of these trails have been upgraded so that ATV use does not degrade the trails and the landscape.

By staying on the designated trails and practicing responsible operation of ATVs, you will help to ensure that Lakeland Provincial Park remains a great place to visit. Maps of the Lakeland Provincial Park & Recreation Area are available at many local tourism offices to help plan your backcountry experience.

Where else are you doing to find over 100 lakes in one region for all your

paddling needs?

Within a 50 kilometre radius of Lac La Biche, outdoor enthusiasts can find over 100 bodies of water perfect for a secluded float or paddle under the summer sun, a kayak trip into the back country or race around a series of remote islands.

These paddle-friendly waters have enough coves that are perfect for beginners to practice paddle boarding or canoeing and take in a

new experience. On days with a breeze the challenge may arise for avid kayakers or paddle boarders to take on some whitecaps that will form on larger lakes like Lac La Biche and Beaver Lake, providing some technical wavelets and hours of paddling fun.

With so many lakes in the region there is still plenty of room for those looking to zip around on motorized boats leaving space and quieter areas for those looking to float or paddle along with the waves and just enjoy the scenery.

Sleep under the stars at one our 1,300 campsites, whether it is a serviced sites or the backcountry, nothing makes you be more at one with nature than gazing at the stars.

Bike the backcountry trails in Lakeland Provincial Park – traverse over 40 kilometres of back-country trails in the park.

Build some castles in the sun when you visit one of the many white sand beaches. If you’re looking for more of a challenge try building it along the shoreline, and see how long it can withstand the waves.

Visit Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park and watch for the flocks of pelicans that arrive during the warm summer months from one of the lookout points.

Have a front seat viewing as the sky comes alive with the Northern Lights, usually the best show times are on crisp winter nights.

Get dirty in Plamondon during the annual Mud Bogs this August.

Boat the 172 kilometres of Lac La Biche Lake following along the shoreline, the fifth largest lake in all of Alberta.

Start your engine, rev it up, and race on the ice of Lac La Biche Lake during the Festival of Speed, or check out the motorized trails of Lakeland Recreation Park in summer months.

Take a walk along Lac La Biche Lake – the 22 kms of paved walking trails around Lac La Biche Lake leading you all the way to Sir Winston Provincial Park, with other trails leading you out to Beaver Lake too!

Regional Events

To beat the winter chills, visitors can take part in hay rides, fun ice fishing tournaments, cross-

country skiing in the afternoons, and community hockey games that take over rinks carved on our lakes. There are several curling bonspiels and hockey tournaments for teams to register and compete in every year.

With the warmer months, residents and visitors alike partake in several summer events in the region including various rodeos, pow wows, and Plamondon’s annual Mud Bog competition.

The firework display at the 50th annual Lac La Biche Pow Wow is sure to be memorable as the show is not only in the sky, but also reflected back onto the lake.

If you’re looking to see traditional Aboriginal dancing, the Heart Lake and Beaver Lake Pow Wows are two events that proudly showcase the culture, talent, and native artwork that go into the extravagant costumes.

The annual rodeos in Lac La Biche, Kikino, and Buffalo Lake invite professional riders and ropers to complete providing great entertainment for all fans. Kikino also hosts its Pony Chariot and Chuckwagon race the same weekend as their rodeo with Buffalo Lake hosting their Chariot and Chuckwagon race a separate weekend from its rodeo.

And just remember, you’re always welcome to get dirty at the Plamondon Mud Bog, where getting a little muddy is only a small part of all the activities going on there that weekend.

Unlike the bright nights in an urban centre, the bright nights of Lac La Biche

are fuelled naturally by the solar system. It may seem strange to promote things you can only see in the dark, but like thousands of others, once you’ve gazed up into a starry night sky above the Lac La Biche Region, you’ll see the light.

If you can get past the fact this promotion is the exact opposite of one for a tropical beach in the middle of summer at the height of a sunny day, then our Northern Lights await you.

The best time to see the Northern Lights is through the cooler months of November

to April, so put away your bathing suit and sunscreen at home and grab your parka for a winter visit to the Lac La Biche Region. Lucky for you, one of the best places to see the dancing lights of fantastic colours is the remote isolation of one of our many lakes.

If the Northern Lights aren’t dancing on the night you are looking for them, or you are visiting mid-summer, why not try to county shooting starts or satellites in the night sky or locate some of the constellations.

Away from the city lights and other metropolitan distractions, the sky looks closer, the stars seem brighter, and it sure looks like there’s plenty more of them.

For a glimpse into the lives of the region’s earliest inhabitants, visitors can visit

Portage College’s Museum of Aboriginal Art and Artifacts and see how old traditions are being carried forward with the Native Arts and Culture Program offered at the post secondary institution. For other opportunities to see the culture in action, be sure to attend one of the summer Pow Wows held annually at Beaver Lake or Heart Lake First Nations.

The Lac La Biche Mission (Notre Dame des Victoires), a provincial and national historic site, was the home of Western Canada’s first printing press and first production wheat field. Book a guided tour, May – September, and follow the guides into the past as they reinterpret historic events.

The Alkareem Mosque in Lac La Biche is Canada’s second, and North America’s third, mosque. It was built in 1958 to serve the local and visiting Arab community. Largely of Lebanese origin, the Muslim faith in the region has roots dating back to the early 1900s. The Mosque is open 24 hours a day for prayers and offers tours for the public.

There’s just as much fun to be had by playing on our lakes in the winter as

summer. Activities in our winter months take the chill out of the cold season’s air.

For those who love to fish year-round, there are plenty of great spots to go ice fishing; a line, a few hooks, and some bait are all you need to have tight lines all day and catch several keepers! For the land-lovers, there are plenty of snow covered trails of Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park and Shaw Lake Cross Country Skill circuit that offer miles of natural beauty.

If a little more speed is to your liking, the area’s lakes and back country trails of Lakeland Provincial Park & Recreation Area

have snowmobile trails for every type of rider.

The winter months also include several community events like curling bonspiels, hockey tournaments, the Carnaval d’Hiver with activities like Cabane à Sucre, the motor-revving Winter Festival of Speed, and the Lac La Biche Kinsmen On The Pond Minor Hockey

The Hamlet of Plamondon, located 25 kilometres west of Lac La Biche along

Highway 55, may be small – but that doesn’t mean it’s quiet! With several annual community events held in their venues, Plamondon is an excellent location to visit year-round.

The popular Cabane à Sucre in March is an annual French tradition in Plamondon where the community gathers to celebrate the end of winter. In the summer two of the most popular events are the Summer Jamboree in June and Mud Bogs in August.

If you are interested in the history and rich French and Russian culture that Plamondon boasts, be sure to visit the Plamondon Museum, which features wall-to-wall displays of the past, and Parc Heritage Park, which presents the history of Plamondon in miniature replicas.
