For most banks, success is about how many accounts they can open, how quickly they can move customers through the teller line, or how many loans they can close. We’re different than most. And, we have different measures of success. Did we do all we could to make every customer interaction a pleasant one? Are we making this community better? Are we making a difference to this area? These are lofty goals, but they are ones we’re always striving for because, as a true community bank, we know these are our responsibilities. You’ll get great financial tools when you bank with us, but we don’t stop there. We’re more than just a bank.

Some homes in Hinsdale near 55th Street are served by sewers owned and maintained by the Flagg Creek Water Reclamation District (a separate govern-mental agency). (630) 323-3299. The Flagg Creek Water Reclamation District also levies a sewer use charge that is billed to each home in Hinsdale served by the district. That sewer use charge is used to pay the cost of collection and treatment of sewer wastes. (630) 323-3299

Hinsdale’s air pollution control ordinance prohibits all open burning, including backyard incineration in a container of any type or burn-ing leaves or any other materials on private or public property. Fires for the purpose of barbecuing or fires in indoor, private fireplaces are permitted provided the smoke coming from these fires does not exceed the limits of white or very light gray smoke as set forth in the ordinance. Smokestack and chimney emissions from stores, institutions, apartment buildings and one or two-family residences are also regulat-ed by the ordinance. To report a violation of the air pollution control ordinance, call the Air Pollution Control officer at (630) 789-7030.

Hinsdale Historical Society 15 S. Clay St.Hinsdale, IL 60521(630) 789-2600hinsdalehistory.org

The idea of forming an His-torical Society grew as a result of the Village’s celebration of its centennial in 1973, and The Hinsdale Historical Society was incorporated as a not for profit or-ganization in 1975. The Hinsdale Historical Society bridges the past, present and future by engaging the community with its archi-tecture and history. The Society maintains three historic properties in Hinsdale: The Hinsdale History Museum, Immanuel Hall, and the R. Harold Zook Home and Studio. The Hinsdale History Museum, constructed in 1874, was donated to the Society by School District 181. It was moved to its present location on village owned prop-erty adjacent to Eleanor’s Park in 1981. With private fundraising and volunteer efforts, the building was restored as a period house museum depicting life in Hinsdale circa 1874-1900. Visitors can tour the restored interior of the museum every Friday and Saturday from Noon-4p.m., and groups are encouraged to make advanced appointments. There is no admission charge, but donations are greatly appreciat-ed. The museum also presents changing exhibits on local history in a small exhibit room and oper-ates a small gift shop of Hinsdale

memorabilia. In 1999, the Society, in a cooper-ative effort with the Village of Hin-sdale and state grant assistance, saved 100 year old Immanuel Church at 302 S. Grant St. from certain demolition. Renamed, Immanuel Hall, the property was deeded to the Historical Society in 2001. The Hall contains the Roger and Ruth Anderson Architectural Center and the Society’s archives of local history materials. The archives are open to the public every Wednesday from 10 a. m. - 2 p.m., and the Society answers hundreds of inquiries annually through its email address [email protected]. Immanuel Hall is also available for use by the public. Community meetings, not for profit fundrais-ers, classes and seminars, music and voice recitals and member events are just some of the events held each year. For additional information on requirements and fees, please visit the Society’s website at www.hinsdalehistory.org. In 2005, the Society saved the Cotswold-style cottage designed by Hinsdale architect, R. Harold Zook for his family. The home and studio (garage) were moved to Katherine Legge Memorial Park and situated next to the Zook designed Lodge. The buildings are still in the process of being restored, but visitors can enjoy viewing their unique architectural style in a lovely park setting. The Society is a not for profit

organization supported entirely by memberships, donations and fund raising. The Society offers edu-cational programs for both adults and children on a variety of topics throughout the year. For more information about the Society, Programs and Exhibits, Archives Assistance, Immanuel Hall Usage and Volunteer Opportunities, please call (630) 789-2600 or visit our website, hinsdalehistory.org.

Graue Mill, located off York Road, one half mile north of Ogden Avenue, is the only oper-ating water-wheel gristmill in the greater Chicago area. Fred Graue built the mill in 1852 to serve the surrounding countryside of Brush Hill (Hinsdale), and it served the community until the turn of the century when modern milling methods rendered the old mill obsolete. Graue Mill and Museum is a not-for-profit volunteer organiza-tion supported entirely by admis-sions, memberships, and dona-tions. The buildings and grounds are owned and maintained by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. Today, thousands of visitors annually view the basic milling process, explained by a miller

in a white apron, and purchase fresh stone-ground cornmeal in old-fashioned cloth bags. After browsing the museum store on the ground floor, they may also stroll the museum’s upper stories, which contain an old-fashioned barn, a nostalgic child’s room, a Victorian drawing room, an early American kitchen and sitting room and an old country store com-plete with genuine rock candy and high-button shoes. In the basement, said to have been an Underground Railway station, the visitor can view the large and fascinating wooden gearwheels. Spinning and weaving demonstrations are held daily, and artisans and events are regu-larly held on weekends when the mill is open.Season:Mid-April to mid-NovemberTuesdays through Sundays. Hinsdale Humane Society22 N. Elm St.Hinsdale, IL 60521(630) 323-5630 hinsdalehumanesociety.org

For more than 62 years Hinsdale Humane Society has been finding forever families for homeless dogs and cats throughout our area while also offering enrich-ment programs for the entire community. What started as six local women wanting to make a difference in 1953, has grown into a well-respected shelter with more than 300 volunteers and nearly 1,000 adoptions annually. Whether you’re looking to add a furry friend to your family or you need help preparing your pet for the arrival of a new baby, Hinsdale Humane Society is here to assist. Located just across the street from Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, the animals that stay at HHS are well fed, exercised and cared for until they’re matched with that perfect fit owner. Nine police departments from throughout the Western Suburbs bring lost animals here, and our doors are always open for pets that can no longer stay with their families due to financial restraints, allergies or other reasons. After careful health screenings and temperament testing, they’re ready for adoption. We also take additional dogs and cats from

other animal welfare agencies and relocate them to HHS for adop-tion. This helps relieve crowding in other Illinois shelters and saves these animals from possible eu-thanasia. In addition to adoption ser-vices, HHS offers a wide variety of outreach programs. If your pet has behavioral problems, call our hotline or enroll in one of our obe-dience classes to work on good canine manners with that pet. Additionally, we reunite lost pets with their owners, handle stray care, offer a reduced-fee micro-chip service, and we are a proud member of Pets for Patriots. And if you have young children, chances are they’ve had experi-ence with our Humane Educator, who brings programs such as Dog Bite Safety, Caring for Pets and Character Education into the local public schools and preschools. Those youngsters with a strong love of animals can participate in one of our three week-long camps during the summer where they get first-hand experience with animals. The shelter is also open for tours with scout groups, community service organizations and more. Our Pet Therapy teams serve a special population of our commu-nity. For 30 years therapy dogs have been bringing calm and com-panionship to the elderly through our Pet-a-Pet program. They’ve also helped children struggling with reading through our READ program. And in the past few years they’ve begun making a

huge difference in the lives of chil-dren with special needs through our Canine Assisted Rehabilitation (CARe) at Adventist Paulson Pedi-atric Rehabilitation Center. With help from the dogs, these children are working through their therapy at a faster pace and making great emotional and social strides. If you love animals, Hinsdale Humane Society is a great place to get involved. We provide a wide variety of volunteer opportunities including walking dogs, socializing cats, fostering animals that are too young for adoption, answering phones, helping with mailings and events and more. If you’re inter-ested in volunteering or would like to learn more about HHS, visit www.hinsdalehumanesociety.org or stop in and say hello. Who knows, maybe you’ll find your forever furry friend! The Robert Crown Center for Health Education21 Salt Creek LaneHinsdale, IL 60521(630) 325-1900robertcrown.org

The Robert Crown Center for Health Education (RCC) is the nation’s first health education center. A leader and innovator in prevention education, RCC has been teaching science-based health programs for more than 50 years. Its mission is to motivate and educate children and youth to lead healthy, happy and safe lives. RCC educators teach a full spectrum of wellness programs that meet community needs, state learning objectives and national health priorities. Scientifically-ac-curate, age-appropriate programs are offered in three topic areas:• general health• puberty & sexual health• substance abuse prevention Every year, RCC has the oppor-tunity to teach students in 9 Chica-go-area counties. Many students are taught in the Hinsdale and North Lawndale centers and many more receive outreach programs. RCC professional educators travel more than 15,000 miles annually to deliver programs direct to the classroom. In its 50-year history, the Robert Crown Center has educated 6 million youth. Primary prevention programs

are created in response to emerg-ing health issues. In recent years, programs have been developed to target the special needs commu-nity, the non-English speaking population and to address the growing heroin epidemic. These innovative, interactive programs are proven to increase social-emo-tional skill building and scientific understanding of the sort of risk-taking behavior that can negatively impact health. Research shows that students are better prepared to make healthy choices after receiving these prevention programs. A 501c3 nonprofit organization, the Robert Crown Center for

Health raises $882,000 each year in order to offer health educa-tion to students in low-income communities where they could otherwise not afford it. One-hun-dred percent of the classes taught by RCC are subsidized by grants and donations in order to achieve the broadest implementation of its mission. The organization envi-sions a world in which all children and youth are equipped with the knowledge, attitudes and skills to positively impact the health of their minds and bodies. Visit the Robert Crown Center for Health Education at 21 Salt Creek Lane, Hinsdale. For more information about programs and community involvement, call (630) 325-1900 or visit www.robert-crown.org.

Wellness House envisions a community where all people affected by cancer thrive. Offered at no cost, and as a comple-ment to medical treatment, our programs educate, support and empower participants so they will improve their physical and emo-tional well-being. Programs are professionally

designed and facilitated to com-plement traditional medical treat-ment in an effort to help people live their fullest through and beyond a cancer diagnosis. Recognizing that cancer affects the entire family, participants can choose from programs such as nutrition classes, stress reduc-tion, exercise classes, individual counseling, support groups, and bereavement. There are also a variety of pro-grams which focus on specific cancers and issues that patients and family members (including young and adult children) may experience. Even when cancer patients have an established support network and are content with their medical treatment, Wellness House pro-grams can lead to:• a greater understanding of can-cer, its treatment and side effects and choices they may have• a reduced sense of isolation, fear, anxiety & stress• a greater sense of control• improved communication within the support network and family• a positive outlook • an extended support network For information on participating in Wellness House programs or on making a donation to honor a loved one, please visit our website at wellnesshouse.org.

Recreation — Hinsdale Community Guide 2016

Hinsdale Park and Recreation Services 19 E. Chicago Ave., Hinsdale, IL 60521 Phone (630) 789-7090

Hinsdale is fortunate to have a total of 132 acres of park land for use. Our parks provide facilities for tennis, baseball, softball, basket-ball, football, soccer, swimming, picnicking, children’s activities and just plain sitting or walking in scenic, open spaces. The village is committed to maintaining each of its parks in good condition and to providing a high level of recreational services to the community. The overall management direction, planning and support for this area of municipal services is provided through the village manager’s office and assigned to the director of park and recreation services. Please call (630) 789-7090 if you have questions or suggestions concern-ing Hinsdale’s Park and Recreation service.

Hinsdale has a total of 16 courts at five loca-

tions, all of which are equipped with racquet-ing boards. The racqueting procedure is used to control court usage and play and is in effect all year.

General Rules & Regulations 1. Persons playing on the courts are not per-mitted to racquet for further court usage until they come off the court at the end of their hour. 2. During school vacation the following court priorities will be in effect: Senior players (16 years and over) have priority over Junior players (15 years and under) on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 1 to 5 p.m. and weekdays after 5. (This rule does not prohibit parents playing with their children, however). 3. Tennis players should be aware that there are times when courts are reserved for specific programs such as lessons. 4. Tennis shoes are required on court sur-face. 5. Players using profanity or unsportsmanlike conduct will be asked to leave courts. Please note: This information is not provided

by the village of Hinsdale. Please contact Tom Lockhart at (630) 404-1256.
