Message from the President & Board Chair

Capacity. Skill. Value.At The Women’s Center, we know that every person has capacity. Every person has skill. Every person has value. But the clients who come through our doors have experienced devastating trauma, have faced any combination of physical, psychological and financial distress, and—all too often —have lost who they are in the process. They no longer know that they are worthy, or that they have skill, capacity and value. Given their circumstances and the adversity they face, it seems impossible that they could overcome such daunting obstacles, let alone take back their lives and gain back their self-worth. Our job is to help them regain who they are, empower them to believe in themselves, inspire them to see a better future, and ultimately, to know they can achieve it.

One of the ways we talk about our work is through the concept of “efforts to outcomes.” We collect data to understand the impact of our services on the women, men and children who seek our help. That data also shows us the efforts or resources required to help people change their lives—resources such as staff, volunteers, funding and program partnerships.

While our outcomes are certainly quantifiable and we celebrate the metrics that point to our effectiveness, equally meaningful are the things that can never be measured:• the happiness of a child being restored after abuse;• the dignity of a parent who gains several paychecks and is able

to move her family out of a shelter;• the optimism of a once isolated older adult who now participates

in weekly activities with friends and family.

We are proud to share our efforts and outcomes with you in this Annual Report. We know that the collective engagement of our staff, volunteers, Board of Directors and community remain a critical component of The Women’s Center work and the success of our clients. And we know the greatest success for each of us is when our clients remember who they are, and recognize their capacity, skill and value.

1,833 people called the Rape Crisis and Victim Services Hotline.

132 children, 533 adults and their 587 parents or significant others were counseled at local hospital rape exam sites.

222 abused children, 393 adult victims of sexual assault and other violent crime, and 182 significant others received therapy

to overcome the trauma of violence.

104 victims received legal assistance by our in-house attorney.

16 children and adults were accompanied through the criminal justice process.

95% of clients who

completed therapy achieved

their treatment goals to heal

from the effects of violence.

232 disclosed their current or past abuse to a Women’s Center trainer. This does not include children who may have

disclosed to another trusted adult.

5,554 adults received sexual assault prevention training.

2,065 professionals were trained in issues regarding sexual assault and child abuse.

2,275 people called the Helpline for crisis counseling and problem solving assistance.

195 people received therapy to address crisis and improve emotional well-being and healthy functioning.

282 homeless children and their 144 parents living in shelters received support to meet emotional and physical needs.

109 people received assistance through the Legal Clinic.

42 older adults received in-home support through the PEARLS Program to reduce isolation and depression.

98% of homeless children and

their parents who received case

management resolved barriers

and were prepared to transition

out of homelessness.

100% of older adult clients who

completed the PEARLS program

improved their depression evaluation

score by at least 50%, with the

average improvement at 83%.

Karen S. Perkins Legacy SocietyElizabeth Ray: A Legacy of Service

In the early 80’s, Elizabeth Ray’s mother started every Monday morning volunteering at JPS. Elizabeth recalls her mother saying, “If you start your Monday morning at JPS, you realize you have no problems!” It was a quote that impacted her life for years. “My mom created a legacy of service—especially for taking care of women. She actually served on the

very first board of The Women’s Center with Karen. It’s an example I’ve followed. I’m lucky to be able to give back and serve in my community.”

Elizabeth has been actively involved at The Center for many years—starting as a board member in the 80’s. Throughout the years, she’s served several terms on the board including two terms as board chair, led the agency’s annual fund drive, chaired several special events and led the capital campaign—which raised the funds for the new facility completed in 2009. She currently serves on the agency’s Foundation Board.

“This is such a unique agency, and I can’t imagine what clients would do if they didn’t have it. It’s been very rewarding to see where the Center started to what it’s become. I love how all of the programs work together, and how the staff is always looking ahead at the trends to see what they can do better. There is great work taking place at the Center, and I love to give others the funds to do great work! I mean, what better place to invest? After so many years affiliated with the organization, I know the return!”

When asked what she would say to others who are considering joining the Legacy Society, Elizabeth responds, “Proper counseling changes lives. Being employed changes lives. Your support ensures that the agency prospers and continues to change lives.”
