GROSSE POINTE YOUTH NAUTICAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION | 2016 ANNUAL REPORT

THE YEAR IN REVIEW2016 was another successful year for the Grosse

Pointe Youth Nautical Education Foundation. The Foundation takes pride in the growth of

junior sailing in Michigan, the fastest growing high school sport in the state. Close to home, University Liggett School now joins Grosse Pointe North and South high schools in varsity high school sailing competition.

The Foundation works closely with the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club to provide a “home base” for the high schools sailing teams, that use Club facilities for practice and regattas, Spring and Fall.

GPYNEF financial grants support teams and individual sailors with equipment, maintenance, travel and regatta expenses helping high school sailors develop their skills and hone their competitive edge.

College scholarship applications continue to grow. For 2016, eleven $1,500 scholarships were awarded to area student/sailors, based on academic and sailing accomplishments. Thankfully, the number of funded perpetual scholarships has grown to eight.

Funding for Challenge the Wind, Sailing for Autism and seeding for the Pontiac Sailing Foundation are examples of the GPYNEF’s impact throughout the area sailing community.

On the water (and in classroom sessions), GPYNEF-hosted training included nationally recognized sailing instructor Dave Perry. A regional qualifier for the Mallory Cup, high school sailing’s oldest trophy, event was held at GPYC in May. The Foundation also sponsored the 2016 US Sailing Junior Olympic Festival, attracting sailors from throughout the Midwest. The competitive season closed with the MISSA’s High School State Championships at the GPYC in October.

THE YEAR AHEADThe momentum generated by the success

of the 2016 programs provides the basis for the Foundation’s 2017 plans.

Consistent with its mission, the Foundation’s support will be directed to programs proven to bring young people in to the sport of sailing, helping them grow as sailors and students.

Planned investments include continued funding for High School Junior Sailing programs; providing opportunities for training and coaching and offering 50% cost reimbursement for equipment or travel to competitive events. Those high school programs, along with the Foundation’s Scholarship initiative, represent the bedrock of the Foundation’s annual efforts. At least ten $1,500 college scholarships to be awarded to students in 2017, with eight of those now funded by Perpetual Scholarship donors.

Continued support for the successful “Challenge the Wind” program at the Grayhaven Sail Club includes plans to donate Optimist prams to enhance their sailing program, particularly among the youngest junior sailors.

Sponsorship of the USODA Great Lakes Championship for Optis on June 23–25 is in place, and support of the US Sailing Junior Olympic Festival in September is planned.

Finally, as in previous years, individual grants supporting specific sailings events, teams or individual participants will be evaluated and funded as deemed appropriate throughout the year.

The coming year represents an ambitious program. And once again, the Foundation looks to its community for support. Successful fund-raising is critical to the GPYNEF’s mission, providing the wind that powers the Foundation’s sails.

GROSSE POINTE YOUTH NAUTICAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION | 2016 ANNUAL REPORT

An important principle of the Grosse Pointe Youth Nautical Education Foundation is the unwavering belief in the importance of education and training, both on the water and in the classroom. The GPYNEF Scholarship Program is a shining example of this belief.

This commitment to higher education is facilitated by the support of generous donors. As a result, young Detroit-area sailors can receive tuition assistance in the form of $1,500.00 grants. High school seniors and currently-enrolled college/university students are eligible to apply.

Young sailor/scholars qualify for consideration by having participated in organized junior sailing or high school sailing programs within the DRYA-area, which stretches from Toledo to Pontiac. Their Junior sailing participation does not have to be in the current year.

With that “ticket of admission”, the sailor/scholars can apply for a GPYNEF’s Scholarship through the process described at www.gpynef.org/scholarships.

The assessment uses three criteria found in the Application Form: two original essays (topics provided), the applicant’s resume of sailing experience and documentation of their academic accomplishments. Applications for the 2017 Scholarship Program must be received at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club by April 2, 2017.

In 2016, eleven such grants were presented to deserving young Detroiters, the largest group of scholarship awards in the Foundation’s history.

FUNDING THE SCHOLARSHIP GRANTSThe annual GPYNEF Scholarship grants

represent an important portion of the Foundation’s annual budget. Generous donors have stepped forward to make funding this important initiative possible.

The program began in 2012 with five, $1,000 scholarships, in comparison to 2016 where eleven $1,500 scholarships were awarded.

PERPETUAL SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENTAt the close of the 2016 GPYNEF fiscal year,

eight Perpetual Scholarships have been funded: Commodore James and Patricia Anderson (2012), Commodore John and Marlene Boll (2012), Manuel J. and Nora Moroun (2012), Benno Steinborn (2014), TransAxle/Commodore James and Sandra Morrow (2014), W.W. Williams Company (2015), Edwin and Felicia Shaw (2016) and Commodore Tymon C. and Sheri Totte (2016).

These scholarships, funded in perpetuity by a $45,000.00 donation, are acknowledged by a commemorative plaque displayed in the Grosse Point Yacht Club’s main lobby, as well as paver bricks inscribed with each donor’s name, at Sailor’s Point overlooking the Club’s Harbor.

It should be noted that these Scholarships will be presented in the donor’s name in perpetuity. These endowments can be funded in a variety of ways; lump sum or funded over time to optimize the tax benefit.

ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP GIFTSAnnual scholarship gifts are also available.

For a donation of $1,600 to the GPYNEF Scholarship Fund the donor’s Scholarship will be presented in his or her name at the GPYNEF Scholarship Awards Brunch. The Brunch is held at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club annually on the Sunday of the Great Lakes Boating Festival. The donor will also receive permanent acknowledgment with an inscribed, commemorative paver brick on Sailors Pointe as well as an acrylic trophy memento.

Additional information concerning endowments is available on-line at www.gpynef.org or by contacting Foundation President, Commodore James Morrow via email: [email protected].

GROSSE POINTE YOUTH NAUTICAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION | 2016 ANNUAL REPORT

When Grosse Pointe’s Klaasen family donated their Tartan Ten racing sailboat, Macho Duck, to the Grosse Pointe Youth Nautical Foundation (www.gpynef.org), they never imagined their gift would have such far-reaching impact in the Detroit sailing community.

That impact was the result of the Foundation sharing the donated Tartan 10 with a deserving local Detroit sailing organization, Challenge the Wind. They, in turn, made the sailing dreams of young Detroiters come true.

Challenge the Wind, founded in 1994, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based at Detroit’s Grayhaven Sail Club (http://grayhavensailclubdetroit.org/index.html). Dedicated to providing young Detroiters the opportunity to learn to sail, the CTW program has enjoyed remarkable growth.

One result of that growth is a need for additional training aids, in this case boats, to allow more Detroit girls and boys to gain hands-on sailing experience. But there is another factor which is a direct result of the program’s popularity… and a sure sign of success.

Specifically, as CTW participants became better sailors, they became more enthusiastic about competing in regattas at the high school

level and beyond. Unfortunately, Grayhaven’s dated fleet of training boats (Flying Scots) is no longer raced in organized competition.

This situation precisely fit the mission of the GPYNEF, which is dedicated to community out-reach and the growth of junior sailing. When CTW students expressed their desire to compete with other clubs and schools, they needed access to 420-class sailboats, the boats used in organized competition by virtually all high school, club, and college sailing programs.

To address this need and expand its involvement in Challenge the Wind, GPYNEF partnered with the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club to identify two Club 420s which would be donated to the organization. The boats, well used, required serious repairs before they could be sailed competitively. At this point, the GPYC took on the refurbishing of one of the 420’s.

EAGLE SCOUT TO THE RESCUEThe renovation of the second 420 was under-

taken by Dominic Dulac, an Eagle Scout with a passion for the sport… and in pursuit of a merit badge for community service.

Through hours of work, Dulac completed the restoration of the now-new 420, learning a great deal about fiberglass, rigging, and all that was needed to bring it up to speed.

Having mounted a fund-raising campaign to pay for the materials required, there was money left over when the restoration was complete. As a result, Dominic would be able to present a $400 check, along with the 420, to Harry Jones, Director of the Challenge the Wind program.

Right: Dan Klaasen lends his expertise to Dominic Dulac.

On the first day of Summer, the two refurbished 420s were delivered to an elated CTW team, who immediately added the boats to their fleet for the season.

Now capable of preparing its students for high school competition and Summer DRYA Junior Sailing Regattas in these newly acquired 420s, CTW looks ready to double the size of their program.

Visit their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/challengethewind) to see them in action with the boats “that launched a thousand dreams,” presentation of the refurbished boat and check representing funds raised by Dominic Dulac.

TACTICS AND CROWDS, A LEARNING EVENT

With the support of the GPYNEF, the 2016 Junior and High School sailing season got off to a seamless start in March with a seminar held at the GPYC featuring renowned sailor and author Dave Perry. This three-hour session was open to all area sailors for a modest fee. The evening event brought together a room full of competitive sailors eager to learn winning tactics for starts and marks from a master.

RECOGNIZING THE CLUB’S SUPPORTThe Foundation’s financial support to the three

High School Sailing teams makes it possible for boats and equipment to be well maintained but could not have been accomplished without the support and facilities of the GPYC. Our combined backing has placed the GPYC at the very top of area Clubs dedicated to the growth of junior sailing.

SUPPORT FOR THE SCHOOLSThe Foundation recognizes the development

of high school sailing as high priority, knowing that these young men and women represent the future of the sport.

In 2016, funding to assist high school teams to travel to regional and national events has not only increased interest among students, it has also sharpened their skills, giving them the opportunity to compete with some of the country’s finest young sailors.

The Foundation, in partnership with the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, was also able to provide a “home” for high school sailing in the Spring and Fall. With the GPYC providing twenty 420-class sail boats for their use, five high schools used the Club as their base beginning in mid-March through June and again in the Fall.

The schools also hosted two Regattas at the Club, including the regional Mallory Regatta, which was a qualifier for the National Championships.

The Midwest Inter Scholastic Sailing Associa-tion’s Michigan State High School Championships were also hosted at the GPYC this Fall. The Grosse Pointe South High School team captured the title for the third time in the past four years defeating largest field yet to compete for this award. Fourteen high schools sailing teams from through-out the state competed in the Regatta.

BUILDING A STRONG FOUNDATIONThe growth of competitive varsity sailing programs at area high schools is a strong testimony

to the success of the Grosse Pointe Youth Nautical Education Foundation. This growth signals the building of a strong foundation which ensures the future of the sport.

Varsity sailing programs at Grosse Pointe North and South High Schools have now been joined by University Liggett School, with all three schools offering varsity sailing programs.

COMPETITIVE SAILING GRANTSIn 2016 the Foundation provided financial

support to the sailing team of Matt Graham and Alex Hume, enabling them to actively pursue their goal of participating in the 2020 Olympics as members of the United States Olympic Sailing Team.

Similarly, Ryan Seago from the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club received a participation grant to assist his match race sailing team an opportunity to compete in the Detroit Cup international match racing series held on the Detroit River this Summer.

SET SAIL FOR AUTISMThe goal of Sailing for Autism is to demonstrate

to the public at large, and employers in particular, the ability of autistic young men and women to contribute in positive, meaningful ways in a variety of roles. Sailing is the medium that is used to demonstrate these abilities. The Foundation is proud to support this stirring (and successful) initiative with financial assistance.

PONTIAC SAILING EDUCATION FOUNDATION

The Pontiac Sailing Education Foundation has launched a series of programs to expand the educational and athletic opportunities offered by Junior sailing to high schools and individuals in Oakland County. The grant from the GPYNEF in 2016 will help them reach their goals and expand the role of Junior sailing throughout the tri-county area.

2016 GPYC USA JUNIOR OLYMPIC FESTIVAL

The Festival, part of a nation-wide series of sailing regattas for youth ages 8 to 21, was held at the GPYC September 17–18, attracting competitors from throughout the Midwest.

The Festival’s events mixed Olympic-style competition with elements of learning and fun for all levels — from beginners to those with Olympic aspirations. With Lasers, 420’s and two groups of Optis competing on four separate courses on Lake St. Clair, this Festival showcased Junior sailing at its best.

The Grosse Pointe Youth Nautical Educational Foundation works throughout the year to support a broad range of initiatives. We help hone the competitive edge of young sailors aspiring to the highest levels of competition, bring the adventure and challenge of sailing to young men and women typically denied the opportunity and assist organizations with strategies similar to the foundation. We do this to support their quest to introduce sailing as an educational and athletic opportunity to a new, wider audience.

GROSSE POINTE YACHT CLUB FUND RAISERS

There are two annual Grosse Pointe Yacht Club traditions that mark the arrival of a new boating season; the annual Summer Breeze party and the area’s premier in-the-water show, the Great Lakes Boating Festival.

These two great traditions are also essential components of the Grosse Pointe Youth Educational Foundation’s annual fund-raising efforts.

Come join the fun. Help raise the funds needed to keep the Foundation growing as fast as interest in Junior sailing is growing.

THE GREAT LAKES BOATING FESTIVALBeginning Friday, May 19 and continuing

through Sunday May 21, the Great Lakes Boating Festival will fill the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club harbor with the latest in boats, from center consoles to luxurious motor yachts.

While the harbor is full of the latest in boats, the GPYC’s east lawn is host to a variety of boat- related exhibits…not to mention delicious food.

With fund-raising raffles for boats, cars and Rolex watches going all weekend, the Festival is a great way to see your friends, get aboard the latest in boats and support the GPYNEF. This event is open to all and no admission charge.

The success of the Grosse Pointe Youth Nautical Education Foundation begins with the generosity of its donors and ends with the satisfaction of knowing that the efforts of the Foundation are enriching the lives of Detroit-area youth through education, both in scholastic and sailing skills. As a 501(c)(3) corporation, contributions to the Foundation, including stock gifts, boat donations and estate legacies are deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Additional information is available on-line at www.gpynef.org or available by contacting Foundation president, Commodore Jim Morrow.

A SPECIAL SUPPORTER MR. LARRY CHANNELL

Sailing lost a special friend this Summer when Larry Channell passed away at Mackinac Island after finishing the Great Lakes’ most important sailing event, the 2016 Bell’s Beer Bayview to Mackinac Race.

Mr. Channell, who was honored as Grosse Pointe Yacht Club’s Distinguished Yachtsman in 2015, was a great supporter of the GPYNEF. In his passing, Family asked that remembrances be made to the Foundation…

…45 fellow sailors generously responded.

THE SUMMER BREEZE Mark your calendar for Friday evening,

May 19, 2017. That is the date of the Yacht Club’s Summer Breeze party celebrating the opening of the season and the Great Lakes Boating Festival.

Enjoy great food and fun while bidding on fabulous items in a live auction and dance the night away. There isn’t a more enjoyable way to support the work of the Foundation than to be part of the action at the Summer Breeze event.

This event is open to all. For more informa-tion visit: www.greatlakesboatingfestival.com
