Welcome to our Secondary Awards Evening special edition.

Principal’s Address

2019 is a historic year in a number of ways. It marks the graduation of our Year 12 cohort who were our first year of students in Prep, our last Year 7 in Primary school and the last Year 12s to use OPs and fully school based assessment to determine their final academic achievement and university scores. This year staff have worked to develop and implement the new Year 11 Senior Assessment and Tertiary programs, writing new assessment items, having them endorsed and preparing students for external exams next year while at the same time teaching our Year 12s on the old programs. It has been a huge effort but staff in this school have done this successfully and as parents you can have confidence that your students have been well taught whether they are on the old or new system. 2019 has again been an interesting and challenging year in other ways as well and we have achieved a number of important objectives over the year. At the start of the year it was announced that we had been selected to run the first Remote Kindy in the North Coast Region opening in 2020 so much time has gone into training of staff, developing programs, purchasing resources and facilities development that is scheduled to start in the next week and be completed by the end of November. Children aged 4 by the end of June 2020 will participate 5 days a fortnight in a free kindy program as part of a composite P – 2 class. It is an exciting opportunity that will benefit our families who have not been able to access Kindy programs due to distance and cost. If you would like to know more about the program please contact Peter Jordan.

This year we have completed the NAPLAN Online trial in preparation to moving to NAPLAN On line in 2020. This primarily involved groups of students logging onto the NAPLAN system to test how well our technology coped with the demand. As well as testing the technology it also allowed us to learn what skills we will need to ensure our students have prior to the test next year. It also allowed students and staff to explore the program which is a more individualised testing program giving different students different levels of tests.

In Week 10 of last term we had our Full School Review. Every four years a team of external reviewers visits the school and talks with staff, students and parents. They then provide a written report at the end of the review that will help us to develop our next Four Year Strategic Plan by the end of this term. This Plan sets the direction for us to follow in our continuing journey of school improvement. Thank you to those parents and community members who spoke to the Review Team we appreciate your feedback. The Executive Summary outlining Key findings and Key improvement strategies will be uploaded to our new website that has recently been released. As well as all of this one of the most important tasks that will be achieved by the end of this year will be the finalisation of a new admin team with the appointment of Peter Jordan Deputy Principal overseeing Primary and Junior Secondary, Warren Creighton Head of Department Junior Secondary and Anthony Holt Head of Department Senior Schooling. I will also be finalising the Head of Department for Special Education Services within the fortnight to replace our current HOSES Trish Gibson who is retiring after 38 years of teaching in Education Qld. This team along with Josh Morris Deputy Principal for Senior Schooling and I are keen to lead the next stage of our school improvement journey into the future.

Congratulations Year 10 Hospitality class and volunteer

students for ourstanding food preparation.

I would like to acknowledge the contribution Trish has made to the education and well being of students with learning difficulties and students with disabilities. Trish has been a passionate advocate for these students and their families not just in our school but across our cluster for many years.

Another person who I would like to acknowledge as he heads towards retirement at the end of the year is Ross Coates our Senior English teacher. Ross returned to our school after teaching here in the mid 1990s and was greeted with great enthusiasm by parents whom he had taught previously. We have appreciated Ross’ skill and expertise in the Humanities subjects and have seen a marked improvement in student outcomes due to his experience. Thank you to both Trish and Ross and on behalf of our school community I wish you both a wonderful and well deserved retirement. Last year was my tenth year at this school and I had intended to look back over our achievements in those ten years. We talk all the time about our improvement journey but sometimes we lose sight of where we have come from and what we have already achieved in the hectic rush of the day to day. Because I was not at the school for most of last year I thought tonight is a suitable time to reflect on those past achievements and highlights.
