message

mission

Donald Rosenblitt, MD

Dear Friends,I am often asked: ‘What is it that is unique about Lucy Daniels Center?’. I suspect my usual answer comes as a surprise to some. I don’t answer by noting we provide the only Triangle school dedicated to the education and treatment of children with emotional challenges, nor that we are the Triangle’s largest agency provider of mental health care for children. Rather, I speak about the great division in mental health over what it means to provide responsible care, and how we position ourselves in that great debate.Consider the following illustration: There are many children who have aggressive behaviors. One side of the division would limit the treatment goal to reducing these children’s acts of aggression. Such an approach tends to privilege the use of medications and techniques that shape outward behavior or troubling thoughts. Treatments tend to be short and relatively formulaic compared to how we approach these situations. We are on the other side of this division of clinical approach. We believe effective and sustained help results from both reducing aggressive behaviors and in addressing the root cause of the aggression. These causes are individual and particular to every child, and involve the child’s genetic constitution, experiences in life, family structure, and unique ways of organizing and understanding the world. Whether it is aggression, distractibility, depression, anxiety, or any of the other many symptoms that parents consult us for, we will often find ourselves working with children and their parents within sustained treatments where the answers are based on exploration and the individuality of the child and family. The search for individual meaning, grounded in the depth of relationship with our teachers and therapists necessary to accomplish this search, is what makes the Lucy Daniels Center special in today’s mental health world. While not alone in this approach by any means, such individualized help is hard to find in a world oriented toward “quick fixes.” We are proud to have carried this torch for over a quarter century on behalf of the children and families of the Triangle, having provided direct mental health care for over 10,000 Triangle families during this time, in our school, clinics, and in their homes. We are endlessly indebted to all who have joined us and supported us in this journey.

Thank you.

y Lucy Daniels School moved from part-time to full-time kindergarten. Adding afternoon hours helps with the transition from preschool to elementary school.

y Lucy Daniels Center presented a special screening of the award-winning documentary “For Grace” at the Marbles IMAX theatre, chronicling the career of Chef Curtis Duffy, founder of internationally-known restaurant, Grace.

y Potter Ben Owen III hosted our students at his studio in Seagrove, NC. The kids toured his workshops, and were instructed by Mr. Owen in creating their own pottery. These pieces were exhibited at Expressions VI.

y Expressions VI, featuring Seagrove pottery artist Ben Owen III was held at The Umstead Hotel and Spa in October of 2016, led by Executive Chef Steven D. Greene, pastry chef Jonathan Fisher, and guest chefs Curtis Duffy of Grace and Chef/Owner Mike Lata of FIG and The Ordinary from Charleston, SC.

y Our association with The Kaleidescope Project continued:

o   First Lady Kristin Cooper and staff visited the Kaleidescope site Beginning and Beyond childcare center in August 2017;

o   LDC led workshops together with Marbles Kids Museum and Project Catch (Salvation Army) staff at Beginning And Beyond followed by two Family Fun nights at that center

o   We worked with Families Together (housing for homeless families) creating resource binders related to child development for families.

y First Friends afternoon social skills group held two 8-week, 16-session programs, and our First Friends Summer Camp in summer of 2017.

y The Lucy Daniels Center, with funding received from John Rex Endowment, further engaged in its organizational development, assisted by Maggie Clay Love and the assessment team. A final report was prepared to reflect the assessment team’s priorities and presented to the board of directors in December with recommendations for next steps.

y The First Annual Cooking for A Classic chef's competition was held over the course of six weeks in February, March and April of 2017. The event featured a classic car as grand prize for the winning chef, and represents one of two new fund raising events for LDC. This event raised almost $85,000.

y Telamon Corporation NC Head Start/Early Head Start Our Program Consultant began working with Telamon this year, and is responsible for providing early childhood mental health consultation support to Head Start & Early Head Start staff, children, and families, and supports Head Start staff as they help guide the social and emotional development of children. The main part of the job is helping teachers manage daily aspects, and the sometimes difficult situations they face in the classroom, and in helping parents understand how to offer kind and reliable guidance so their children will feel safe and confident. Our consultant often works directly with teachers, offering a third person’s point of view through in-class assessments, teacher training, and workshops for parents, as well as observing direct interactions between teachers and students. This year we served: 622 Head Start Children (ages 3-6) & Families; 366 Early Head Start Children (ages 0-3) & Families ; and 120 Classroom teachers and Home-Based Visitors across 11 Head Start and Child Care Partnership centers in Wake, Chatham and Caswell counties; and facilitated trainings in ‘Building Resiliency and Trauma Informed Teaching’ for all center administration, teaching, support staff and home visitors

FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS, the Lucy Daniels Center has presented a Gala unlike any other. Originally conceived by former Lucy Daniels board president Dean McCord, Expressions surrounded guests with the classic luxury of The Umstead Hotel and Spa while they enjoyed the artistry and award-winning cuisine of some of the finest chefs in the world. The sixth and final Expressions, held on October 23, 2016, featured a fabled team of chefs assembled by The Umstead’s Executive Chef and recent James Beard Award nominee Steven Devereaux Greene. In addition to Umstead colleague Pastry Chef Jonathan Fisher, the evening’s guest chefs were

Michelin Award winner Chef Curtis Duffy of Grace and James Beard Award winner Chef Mike Lata of FIG and The Ordinary in Charleston. Together they wove a culinary story further inspired by renowned Seagrove potter Ben Owen III, whose works are part of museum and private collections around the world.

“For Grace”On September 25, 2016, THE LUCY DANIELS CENTER presented a special screening of the award-winning documentary “For Grace” at the Marbles IMAX theatre. The film chronicles the career of Chef Curtis Duffy, who founded the internationally known Chicago restaurant, “Grace”. The film follows the building of “Grace” from concrete box to opening night, demonstrating the exacting standards required in luxury dining. It also revisits Duffy’s turbulent childhood: How a middle school home economics teacher recognized cooking talent in a troubled teenager, how an unimaginable tragedy made Duffy seek refuge in the kitchen, and how cooking ultimately exacted a price.

Cooking For a ClassicBeginning February 20 and culminating in a thrilling finale on April 10, sixteen chefs from the Triangle and beyond competed by pairs to win the grand prize of a restored classic ’69 Corvette. Guests enjoyed evening after evening of culinary competition, voting for their favorites. Each event featured celebrity judges such as local TV and radio personalities, chefs and restaurateurs, food writers, and executives from local government, businesses and arts organizations. Many in the crowd noted, “The real winners were the children”, whose mental, emotional and social struggles were at the heart of the fund raiser. HUGE thanks to the amazing sponsors and vendors whose underwriting of Cooking for A Classic enabled us to net more than $85,000 for the Lucy Daniels Center. Sponsors: MOJO Performance Marketing, Rocky Top Hospitality, WRAL Out and About. Vendors: ALSCO, Bauscher Hepp, f8 Photo Studios, Fresh Point, Inland Seafood, Jen Rhoton Designs, Libbey Glass, Locals Seafood, Neomonde Bakery, Pepsi, Prestige Farms, SPIN, TOPO, URECO, and US Foods.

Links For LucyOur inaugural Links for Lucy Golf Tournament was held April 3, 2017 at the beautiful Prestonwood Country Club in Cary (Fairways Course). We hosted 25 teams and 100 golfers for the event. Event sponsors MetLife, Tidal Electric, Banyan, Elliott Davis Decosimo, The Harborlight Group, Northwestern Mutual, Tego Data, ACHC, KCS, Etix, Full Steam Brewery, and a slew of other sponsors and donors helped raise nearly $24,000. Funds raised go to the Family Support Fund, enabling Lucy Daniels Center to provide support for families who cannot afford to pay the full cost of provided services, and to continue to help families whose children are dealing with emotional and mental health issues.
