LAST GAME: Gunning for its first 3-0 start since 2004-05, the Miami women’s basket-ball team struggled shooting the ball in a 77-43 loss at Morehead State on Saturday afternoon.

The RedHawks drop to 2-1 with the setback while the Eagles are now 3-1.

Both offenses struggled in the first quarter with Miami only hitting three field goals and just one after scoring the first four points of the game. The Eagles hit a couple of threes to grab a 10-6 lead late in the frame, but Lauren Dickerson connected on a trifecta of her own to cut the deficit to 10-9 after the first quarter.

The Eagles came out strong in the second quarter and eventually ballooned their lead to 24-17 with 3:20 to go until halftime. A pair of Kristen Levering free throws along with a Kayla Brown layup pulled the Red and White within three, but Aaliyah Wells converted a layup with 1:42 to go to up the lead to 26-21. Abbey Hoff countered that with a three-pointer with 1:21 to go until the break to make it 26-24, which is where the score remained at halftime.

Miami’s shooting didn’t get on track in the second half as Morehead State scored the first five points of the third quarter and led by as many as nine before MU trimmed the deficit to 43-37 after 30 minutes. The Eagles continued expanding their lead in the fourth, opening the period on a 9-0 run to go on top by 15. MSU led by as much as 34 in the fourth quarter, scoring 27 of the first 29 points in the frame to put the game away.

MSU hit 18-of-32 shots in the second half to finish with a 41.2 percent clip from the field overall while MU struggled to the tune of 25 percent shooting. The Eagles also held a 52-37 advantage in rebounding. Turnovers didn’t play much of a factor with Miami committing 12 while Morehead State had just nine. Individually, Dickerson led the Red and White with 10 points.

ABOUT CINCINNATI: The Bearcats have gotten off to a 2-1 start on the season. After defeating Southeast Missouri State and Bowling Green on the road, they dropped their home opener to Indiana State, 63-55, on Saturday. Junior forward Shanice Johnson has been the star for Cincinnati, averaging 22.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Another key player has been junior guard Ana Owens, who averages 18.0 points per contest.

SERIES WITH CINCINNATI: The series between Miami and Cincinnati is tied at 15 wins apiece. The RedHawks have won the last three meetings, including a 74-69 win in their last contest on Dec. 17, 2011. Courtney Osborn led the way with 23 points, while Kirsten Olowinski scored 19 points and brought in 16 rebounds.

MIAMI VS. AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE: The AAC is made up of 11 schools located all throughout the eastern half of the United States. Within the conference is Connecticut, which has won four consecutive National Championships. Miami is 18-21 all-time against members of the AAC, with most of those games being the 30 they

have played against Cincinnati. In addition, the RedHawks are 1-0 vs. USF, 1-1 vs. Houston, 1-2 vs. Temple, 0-1 vs. East Carolina and 0-2 vs. Tulane. Miami has never faced SMU, Connecticut, UCF, Memphis or Tulsa.

UP NEXT FOR THE REDHAWKS: Miami heads to Wilmington, North Carolina after the Thanksgiving Holiday to participate in the UNCW Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic. The RedHawks will take on La Salle on Saturday at noon and Providence Sunday at noon. Both games can be heard live on WMOH and on Miami College Sports Live for those who have a subscription.

HOME OPENERS: This is the 43rd season of women’s basketball at Miami. The Red and White are 24-18 all-time in their first game of the season at Millett. Last season, they dropped a 71-57 decision to NKU in their opener. This is the second time the Bearcats have been Miami’s home opening opponent. On Dec. 3, 1988, UC earned a 60-46 victory at Millett.

DICKERSON LEADING THE WAY: She may be only 5-3, but freshman point guard Lauren Dickerson is leading Miami in nearly every major statistical category. She is the RedHawks’ leader in scoring (13.0 ppg), rebounding (5.7 rpg), assists (2.0 apg), steals (5 total) and minutes played (29.7 mpg).

BROWN SCORING OFF THE BENCH: Junior Kayla Brown has come off the bench and provided an offensive spark the first three games. She is second on the RedHawks, averaging 11.0 points per game. She also is averaging 3.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals in 26.0 minutes per contest. Brown’s high this season came at NKU (Nov. 15) when she put in 15 points.

PUTTING DOWN THE CLAMPS: Miami won its first two games due in no small part to its effort on the defensive side of the floor. In wins over Austin Peay and NKU, the RedHawks allowed a mere 54 points per games. MU held those teams to just 33.6 percent from the field while forcing 30 turnovers and recording 14 steals.

REBOUNDING THE BASKETBALL: Miami had 48 rebounds in the win at Austin Peay on Nov. 11. Lauren Dickerson and Megan Galloway led the way with 10 each. Kendall McCoy had six, while Kristen Levering and Kayla Brown each had five. It was the first time since Feb. 17, 2016 at Ohio that the RedHawks had five players with five or more rebounds in a game.

WHAT RETURNS: With nine returning letterwinners and four returning starters, Miami has a large majority of its statistical contri-butions back from last season. The RedHawks return 84.0 percent of their scoring, 81.3 percent of their rebounding, 81.9 percent of their assists, 88.3 percent of their steals and 76.3 percent of their blocks from last year’s squad. Their top returning scorer is junior guard Baleigh Reid, who averaged 15.3 points per game. However, she is still recovering from a season-ending knee injury suffered in late February and is out indefinitely. The top returning active scorer is sophomore guard Leah Purvis. She started all 30 games and averaged 10.7 points per contest as a freshman.

PURVIS SELECTED TO TEAM USA FOR WORLD MACCABIAH GAMES: Maccabi USA recently announced its team that will represent the United States in open women’s basketball championship at the World Maccabiah Games in Israel next July. Miami sophomore guard Leah Purvis will be a part of this 12-person team.

Purvis is believed to be the first RedHawk to represent Team USA in women’s basketball. The last Miami student-athlete to par-ticipate in the World Maccabiah Games was track and field sprinter Margarita Pogorelov, who represented Israel in 2009 and took home a bronze medal in the 5,000 meters.

The Maccabiah Games are the world’s third largest international sporting event and attracts elite Jewish athletes from around the world. The Maccabiah Games in 2017 will take place from July 4-18 and will be comprised of 9000 athletes from 80 countries. The Games provide Jewish athletes the opportunity to come to Israel and compete at an elite level while also building connections with their teammates, competitors and the people of Israel.

MIAMI PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH IN EAST: The Mid-American Conference announced its 2016-17 preseason women’s basketball poll on Oct. 27. The Miami was picked to finish fifth in the East Division after a vote by the league’s 12 coaches.

The defending MAC regular season champion Ohio Bobcats were picked to win the East Division by nine coaches. The defending MAC Tournament champion Buffalo Bulls were picked second and received the other three first-place votes. Akron followed in third, while Bowling Green placed fourth. Miami was picked fifth, while Kent State rounded out the division.

Central Michigan was the unanimous pick of all 12 coaches to win the West Division. Ball State and Toledo tied for second in the poll. The West Division was rounded out by Western Michigan, Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan.

Central Michigan was the pick of six coaches to win the overall MAC regular season title, while Ohio received five coaches support. The other vote went to Buffalo.

Cleve Wright Head Coach

Years as Head Coach: 15th SeasonOverall Record: 259-167

Years at Miami: Fourth SeasonAlma Mater.: Berea ‘89

Cleve Wright returns for his fourth sea-son in charge of the Miami women’s basketball program. Wright came to the RedHawks after a very successful 11-year run at Gannon that featured five NCAA Tournament appearances and two runs to the Elite Eight.

Wright holds a career coaching record of 259-167. His young Miami team last year saw 94 percent of all its available minutes played by freshman and sophomores. Despite that the RedHawks were 6-5 in non-conference play. Injuries and inexpe-rience caught up with the team in MAC play as it finished 9-21, but now with several veterans, combined with a pow-erful recruiting class joining them, Wright has the RedHawks ready to take the next step this season.

Wright won 70 percent of his games at Gannon (233-100), turning the Lady Knights into a Division II powerhouse. In his final season there in 2013, he led Gannon to a 31-5 record and an appear-ance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. The team finished the season ranked sixth in the country. Wright brought the Lady Knights to the NCAA Tournament in five of the his last seven seasons, with his best year coming in 2009-10 when he was named the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year after guiding them to a 37-1 record and an NCAA Final Four appearance. He coached seven All-Amer-icans and 37 all-conference selections.

Gannon’s women’s basketball program was extremely successful in the class-room as well under Wright. The Lady Knights were ranked among the top 25 teams in GPA in eight of his final nine years. In addition, 70 players earned all-

conference academic honors.

Wright joined Gannon after a three-year stint (1999-2002) as the top assistant at Northwestern under head coach June Olkowski. While with the Wildcats, he was responsible for the development of the post players and was the team’s recruit-ing coordinator. His recruiting class in 2001 was rated as the 35th-best in the entire nation by All Star Girls Report, and he was voted as one of the top 25 assis-tant coaches in Division I in 2002.

Prior to his time at Northwestern, Wright spent two seasons as an assistant coach with Olkowski at Butler. He also spent four seasons (1993-97) as the head coach at Southwestern High School in Som-erset, Ky., and was an assistant coach at Duke during the 1992-93 season.

Wright earned his bachelor’s degree from Berea College (Kentucky) in 1989. He competed on both the men’s basket-ball and track teams, while serving as a student assistant coach for the women’s team. He earned a master’s degree in athletic administration from Ball State in 1992, working as a graduate as-sistant coach there for two seasons (1990-92).

Wright served as a NCAA Division II representative to the Women’s Basket-ball Coaches Association (WBCA) Board of Direc-tors from 2010-13. He has

worked with the WBCA in various capaci-ties over his entire career.

Wright is married to the former Diane McKinley. They have two daughters, Chloe (20), who is a sophomore at Miami, and Emma (17).
