Do Great Good Through Federation!TRANSCRIPT
2 Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties
The Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties is the umbrella organization of the area's Jewish community, bringing together agencies, organizations, and communities to support and
fulfill the needs of the Jewish people. The Federation raises funds to coordinate services, and helps support agencies that touch the lives
of Jews in Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties, in Israel, and throughout the world.
Through Federation, you touch more Jewish lives than through any other organization. Whether it’s providing much needed social
services to the most vulnerable in our tri-county community, offering programming and support to enhance Jewish life, or empowering
and ensuring the safety of Jews here, in Israel, and around the world, together we can do good everywhere from anywhere.
2015-16 Annual Report 3
Dear Friends,
It is our pleasure to write about the accomplishments of the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren
Counties and our community this year. We are continuing with the new initiatives we began last year and have begun
others. Here is some of what makes us proud to be associated with the Federation:
The Blank Leadership Development Program graduated its first cohort of Blank Leadership Fellows. The Fellows had
the opportunity to learn together about being the best and most effective Jewish leaders they can be for our entire
community. They became a very tight-knit group during their week-long mission to Israel, and will be assets to all of us
going forward. We are very proud of their accomplishments.
The Women’s Philanthropy Division, co-chaired by Alissa Fox and Laura Boretz, took up the cause of disabled veterans
in New Jersey and Israel. As usual, the women have raised significant funds to help those who protect us here in the
U.S. and in Israel.
The Community Relations Council, chaired by Eric Lavitsky, brought former Israeli Ambassador to the United States
Danny Ayalon to our community to discuss the relationship between the U.S. and Israel and the world-wide threat of
terrorism. The Council also successfully lobbied our State Legislators to pass anti-BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanc-
tions) legislation in New Jersey. During the national debate about the Iran Nuclear Deal we provided opportunities for
members of our community to hear from NJ Senator Corey Booker, the U.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz, Vice
President Joe Biden, President Barak Obama and even Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Whether you agree
or disagree with the plan, the Federation was committed to making sure everyone had the information necessary in
order to decide for themselves.
The Jews Around the World Lecture Series was launched by its chair Jeffrey Schiller. Talks on The Jews of Sicily and The
Jews of Greece were enlightening and entertaining. The Jews of Ethiopia is in the works for next year.
There are many more things coming down the pike for next year as well. The Men’s Division has begun planning its
second annual event, the Missions Committee is planning a trip to Israel, Women’s Philanthropy , is considering its next
project and the Community Relations Council is planning for its next speaker.
We are so pleased to have shared the successes of this past year with all of you, and we look forward to more success-
es for our community in the year to come.
Sincerely,
Steve Lieberman Robin Wishnie

IMAGINE TWO JEWISH ADULTS. One of them has
been bar miztvahed. The other rarely sets foot in a
synagogue. Both of their lives changed forever this
year.
Through Federation, George and Harriet Blank
created the Blank Leadership Development Program
to ensure the future and growth of our Jewish
community.
With the help and guidance of existing leaders and
Rabbis, 17 young leaders, all residents of Somerset,
Hunterdon and Warren Counties, were chosen to
undertake this year-long journey. They attended
monthly education sessions focusing on topics such
as Jewish history, Jewish leadership, the importance
of fundraising, tzedakah and social justice, as well as
an overview of Israel. As each month went by, the
fellow’s bond with each other grew stronger, in turn
strengthening our community.
But nothing was as powerful as experiencing Israel
firsthand, which is what the Fellows did this past
February.
6 Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties
They traveled around for a week and saw
what an awe-inspiring country Israel is.
They saw everything from high-tech
industry to an entire village built for
disabled members of the community. They
learned at every stop how their
commitment to Federation makes possible
so much of what they saw.
Upon their return, the Fellows decided to
make their first initiative to raise funds to
save the life of a child through an
organization called “Save a Child’s Heart”.
They provide free heart surgery in Israel to
children from all around the world.
We look forward to seeing what the
Fellows will do next as they also turn their
attention to our tri-county community.

In our local community, we supported the fabric of
Jewish life by
Funding another year of educational programming
and bus subsidies for the Institute for Holocaust and
Genocide Studies at Raritan Valley Community
College.
Funding PJ Library, a children’s book program for local
Jewish families, to teach and engage young families
about Jewish values and traditions.
Funding and providing our print and online Jewish
community newsletter, The Speaker, and frequent
e-blasts.
Holding quarterly Business Networking Group events
to bringing local business leaders together.
Creating an entirely new lecture series on the History
of Jews from Around the World.

WHAT IF YOU COULD REACH across the world and touch a
life? Imagine you’re reaching out from your own kitchen
into an empty kitchen of an elderly couple in Ukraine.
You’re putting bread on their bare table and vegetables in
their empty fridge. Or imagine reaching out a helping hand
to a veteran that has fought to make us safe.
The Women’s Philanthropy Division of The Jewish
Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties
focused their efforts this year on helping disabled Veterans
both in our own community and in Israel through 52
Reasons to Love a Vet and The Zahal Disabled Veterans
Fund .
The Women’s Philanthropy Division held two major
fundraisers during the 2015-2016 calendar year, their
annual Imagine event in the fall and a night of theatre in
the spring. The events provided a platform for these two
wonderful organizations to raise both money for and
awareness of our veterans in need.

The Jewish Federation of
Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties
will endeavor to educate, engage and
energize the women of our community so
that they may have a positive impact on the
lives of Jewish women and children in need
locally, in Israel and throughout the world.
We salute the women in our community
who through their passion and
commitment, donate at the Pomegranate
or Lion of Judah level. These women
embody the leadership needed to
accomplish our mission.

EXPAND YOUR VISION FURTHER. See yourself as an ally, standing
shoulder to shoulder with Jews everywhere. You’re offering
support in places where—even a decade ago—none of us thought
it would ever be needed.
You’re in Europe, where after feeling secure for three generations,
Jews are experiencing attacks on schools and businesses. You’re
on North American college campuses—places where young
people are meant to discover themselves. But today, if a student is
Jewish, all too often what they’re discovering is a hostile
environment .
You’re preparing them to stand up against hatred and bigotry. So
they know what to do if they encounter a slur about wearing a
kippah, or find a swastika on the wall of a Jewish sorority, or
encounter an anti-Israel discussion in the classroom.
You’re in France & Denmark, England & the former Soviet Union.
Through Federation, you are anywhere & everywhere in the world
where Jewish communities are in need of support, protection &
solidarity.
14 Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties
Here are some of the ways JFedSHAW shows solidarity:
JFedSHAW ensures that Jewish needs in our local community are met by organizing
our largest community outreach of the year, Super Sunday, raising thousands of
dollars and bringing together community members from across our tri-county area
for a day of tzedakah and tikkun olam.
Continuing for a 10th successful cycle our dollar-for-dollar community challenge
grant for new and increased gifts, Kehilat Achat.
Community Relations Committee brought several great events to the community.
Crossing the Line – event detailing the rise of subtle and not so subtle
anti-Semitism on North American campuses, disguised as a critique of Israel.
That taught our college age students how to handle these situations on
campus.
Ambassador Danny Ayalon gave us an insider’s perspective on Israel’s foreign
policy (pictured above)
We stand with Rutgers Hillel in combating anti-Semitism at Rutgers and promoting a
positive image of Israel on campus
Overall support of partner groups that work on our behalf in and around the world.
World Ort – provides educational services to underserved communities
worldwide

Ambassador Danny Ayalon Addressing the Community
Secure Community Network – Federation non-profit exclusively dedicated to
security concerns of Jewish communities around the world
Jewish Agency for Israel – Facilitates Aliyah to Israel from across the world and
facilitates integration of immigrants into Israeli society
American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee—Worlds’ leading humanitarian
organization for Jews and others in need. Serves the disadvantaged, the poor,
and those affected by natural disasters and wars.
The Community Relations Council (CRC) is
the Israel Advocacy and Public Affairs committee of the Jewish
Federation. It brings Israel programing to our community that
covers a variety of topics from speakers on Israeli politics, cul-
ture and society, to anti-Semitism and the Boycott, Divestment
and Sanctions movement on campuses around the country. It
also does advocacy work with our State Government as well as
the Federal Government on issues of relations with Israel as
well as housing for the elderly, or food programs for the poor,
among other issues of import to the Jewish community.
