VISION/ESF & Island School’s vision for the new Island School provides a qualitative design framework:

• To ensure that the educational, personal and social needs of the students,

staff and community be met in a safe, secure, welcoming and inclusive environment;

• To create an environment which is flexible and can embrace the use of new technologies and different learning styles;

• To create a campus that is an exemplar of sustainable design, which can be used as a tool for teaching the principles of environmental conservation to students;

• To ensure our new campus reflects all that works so well about our current

one, that it supports ESF and Island School ethos and yet it benefits from all that is best about emerging ideas for school design from around the world.

Social/

• Hybrid of village & campus approach to create an extended social spaces between buildings

• This social approach focus on the spatial organisation to encourage social activities

Landscape/

• The building form adapt to the site topography, another landscape is re-created

• Greening area is maximised and more flexible spaces are created

Village/

• Conventional• Cluster with small footprints• Series of open spaces formed• Resemble existing IS arrangement

Loop/

• Hybrid of linear and folded approach to form a loop to maximise the use of site area

• Large internal social space is formed, Kellett School is an example of this type

Campus/

• Larger footprint with internal social spaces

• Encourage more social activities• More flexible learning spaces could be

enabled with larger footprints

• researching, analysing, questioning, creating and collaborating activities

• support both individual and group work• high level of porosity• division by architecural furniture and non-load bearing

“walls”

Processing Space (Zone B)/

• combined learning/ house areas• support more informal learning and social interaction• larger level of movement and link with main circulation
