But perhaps the greatest ofthesehasbeen thephenomenal in-crease in rentals, which in urbanareas have often been above 10%year-on-year and in some cases

monthly rentals, to give one ex-ample, are now saying to them-selves that the same outlay couldprovide them with a R800 000 toR900 000 bond provided they canfindadeposit ofR80 000. In the cir-cumstances it becomes illogical,indeed almost irresponsible, notto opt for home ownership.”Although the impact has in

many cases beenmore psycholog-ical than real, the average con-sumer also, says van Alphen, is

moving towards property owner-ship because he now anticipatesthe inflation rate settling fairlycomfortably below 6% and he ex-pects it to remain there. This, hesays, has come about largely be-cause of the unexpectedly low oilprice, which again appears tohave settled for some time belowUS $50 per barrel.“The knock-on effect of this,”

says van Alphen, “is that the con-sumer anticipates interest ratesalso remaining at low levels.”Van Alphen predicts that inter-

est rateswillnot risebymore than0,75% this year – an increase theaverage home buyer can contem-plate without too much anxiety.The greater willingness to in-

As part of Subaru SouthernAfrica’songoing commitment to the cycling fra-ternity, the event embodied the brand’spartnership with local cycling ace DarylImpey - the first African to wear the re-vered yellow jersey in the Tour deFrance.

Underpinned by founder Joel Stransky –who in his own right is also a South Africansporting hero after having scored the infa-mousRugbyWorldCup-winningkickin1995– the LumoHawk Foundation seeks to sup-port the educational and sporting needs ofpreviously disadvantaged children andtheir communities in South Africa.WiththeinvitationextendedtoSubarucli-

ents and cyclists alike, the event began atthe sereneKloofzichtLodge inMuldersdrift,where Impey and Stransky led the group on-to themajestic roadsof theCradleofHuman-kind, fora50kmride.Uponreturn,breakfastand a charity auction were lined up whichenabled the cyclists to mingle with the twosporting greats.
