Wagga Civic Theatre Season 2015TRANSCRIPT
WAGGACIVICTHEATREseason
“From Australia’s major performing arts companies to world-premiere local shows, 2015 Civic Theatre Season brings the best of the best to Wagga.”rod kendall mayor, wagga wagga
It’s a great privilege to be able to program a theatre season. You get to see the best new shows in development and work with
some of the great arts companies. From this I get to decide what to share with the people of Wagga. What do I want them to feel when they walk through the door? Does this show excite me? Is it exceptional? Does it say something particularly new or does it capture the zeitgeist? I think about the kind of show that I would take my kids to and the kind of show that has ideas that are likely to set the cat amongst the pigeons. I always look for shows that surprise me, shows that question the nature of theatre and I love shows that are huge and dazzling.
In 2015 we have, in many ways, a classic season; the symphony, the circus, Shakespeare, musicals, dance, theatre – but all with a twist. So that is how I would describe this year - classics with a twist.
The 2015 Civic Theatre Season has a bit of everything that drew me to the theatre. I hope it draws you in too.
Carissa Campbell Manager, Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre

n 360 ALLSTARS is a phenomenal physical performance exploring all
forms of rotation. Boasting a stellar cast, including world champion athletes, world class dancers and world renowned musicians, the production connects the street with the elite to deliver a radical urban circus!
A performance like no other, 360 ALLSTARS reinvents the traditional circus by presenting contemporary performance styles instead of conventional circus art forms. Replace acrobats with break dancers, substitute a basketball freestyler in place of a juggler, swap the unicyclist for a BMX flatlander, and exchange the hoop act for a Roue Cyr artist, and you get an exhilarating circus performance like nothing you have seen before! And with live
music from award-winning master musicians and “ringmasters”, Gene Peterson and Sam Perry, 360 Allstars is as aurally exciting as it is visually astounding.
Fusing amazing physical skills with the extraordinary artistry that emerges from urban culture, 360 ALLSTARS is a revolutionary production that will leave you dizzy with excitement!

Piazzolla’s great tango, this is a concert that will have you smiling and tapping your toes. Ravel tells classic fairytales in orchestral Technicolor: Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb, Beauty and the Beast – they’re all there.
For the main event of the evening the SSO plays Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony, composed at the end of World War II.
This was meant to be a victory symphony by the Soviets’ celebrity composer. But don’t expect anything ponderous or grandiose: this symphony is like one big sigh of relief – good-humoured and a delight from beginning to end.
The SSO will also present engaging, interactive concerts for schools on Thursday 21 May, 10.00am and 11.30am. More information and tickets available from [email protected]

“This provocative, engaging play may become our next Australian classic.” stage whispers

ed Kelly sits in his prison cell. Tomorrow he is going to hang. A wounded beast in a cage, defiant till the end. A priest enters
to give him his last rites and it is revealed to be Dan Kelly - Ned’s younger brother believed burnt to death at Glenrowan. Dan is desperate and needs one last thing from his older brother and Ned stands firmly against him.
History tells us that Dan and Ned never saw eye to eye and there is also myth that Dan escaped the fire and disappeared to Queensland. This makes for a brilliantly charged premise, explored beautifully on stage in 80 gripping minutes, weaving Kelly fact, theory and myth while exploring masculinity, brotherhood and the dangerous dynamic of mateship.
Kelly boasts a brilliant cast of three of Brisbane’s finest actors - led by the Matilda Award winning Steven Rooke who plays Ned Kelly in a powerhouse performance with humour, heart and depth.
This new Australian play, Kelly, written by young Queensland playwright Matthew Ryan, was produced by QTC for their 2012 mainstage season. Intimate and compact in design yet a theatrically ambitious drama, which is both contemporary and accessible as it wrestles with themes surrounding one of our country’s greatest historic icons.

he Annual Alice Springs Beanie Festival is fast approaching and Tilly Napuljari is running out of time to finish her new
creation and enter it for judging. Nessa Tavistock, a Sydneysider, has run away to the Red Centre to escape her own problems back in the big smoke.
With time and talk, they realise that despite their differences in language, surroundings and upbringing, they are not so different after all. In making their beanie together, Tilly and Nessa’s stories become entwined and made into a thing of beauty - row by row, colour by colour, yarn by yarn.
Head Full of Love is the story of these two remarkable women and the unlikely but inspiring friendship which forms between them. It invites you to look differently at the possibilities of the humble beanie: a much-loved everyday item, and an extension of ourselves and the everyday lives we wear.
Wesley Enoch directs this intricate, warm and wisely told tale by Australian playwright Alana Valentine (Run Rabbit Run, Parramatta Girls).

What if women told the truth a little more, to ourselves and each other? What if we
admitted marriage can be tough, motherhood is a challenge and doing it all is exhausting. What if, instead of the Hollywood version of marriage and motherhood, we saw a depiction of how it really is - relentless, exhilarating, infuriating, hilarious, complicated.
Mother, Wife and the Complicated Life is the new hit Australian musical that’s wowing audiences and critics alike. Chosen for the New York Musical Theatre Festival it’s received rave reviews both here and abroad, with full house standing ovations for its New York shows. Recently staged in New York at the United Nations, for
the Commission for the Status of Women Conference, there is also a Norwegian production premiering in 2015.
Written by and starring Amity Dry, well known from Channel Nine’s hit TV show The Block as well as her top 10 Gold album The Lighthouse, this musical is truly a home grown success story. With successful seasons and tours in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney it has played for thousands and has audience members coming back to see it again and again.

the country town of Coriole is getting ready for Australia Day – a time to crack open a frothy, stick a snag on the barbie
and celebrate what it means to be a true blue Aussie.
The Australia Day committee is gearing up to put on the town’s biggest party – but they have a few issues of their own to sort out first. With everyone from the Greens to the local mayor to the CWA wanting a piece of the party pie, it’s proving hard yakka to work out what an Aussie celebration should look like. Nothing is sacred as the national identity is put through the ringer in this thoroughly modern ripper of a comedy!
Will the day be fair dinkum after all? Or are there too many roos loose in the community hall?
Written and directed by acclaimed playwright and Sydney Theatre Company satirist Jonathan Biggins (The Wharf Revue), Australia Day returns in a brand new touring production for 2015.

Following the 2014 premiere in Melbourne under the Big Top, an action-packed national tour
including Palm Island, and a smash-hit international tour across America to Montreal, Circus Oz rockets into Wagga Wagga with their show But Wait...There’s More.
Performed within a spectacular large-scale set inspired by an abandoned theatre in tatters, the touring circus troupe arrive, with hula showstoppers, and unicycle jaw-droppers, they delight and entertain. The MC interacts with the audience: hip hop call and response coolness, this is LIVE and the audience can feel the authenticity. Circus Oz is a celebration of diversity. Tricks, flips and twists.
With an astonishing mix of stunt-jumping acrobatics, cutting-edge juggling, virtuosic unicycling, elegant flying trapeze, cheeky
impersonations, ridiculous knockabout and multi-skilled human physical exuberance, But Wait…There’s More is a circus, sometimes masquerading as pure entertainment, always celebrating the collective power of a group of fabulous humans, while at times playfully satirising the rising tide of reality television, consumerism, and today’s fast-paced thirst for more! All of this is entwined within original music performed by Circus Oz’s live and physically acrobatic band.

“A journey of seduction, jealousy, lust and revenge” dance australia
Spend the night with the definitive seductress of stage as she weaves her deliciously wicked wiles through one of
Expressions Dance Company’s (EDC) most loved productions.
Performed to Rodion Shchedrin’s gripping Carmen Suite by six EDC dancers, this iconic tale of Spanish heat and gypsy passion unravels when naïve soldier Don Josè has his heart ignited by the fiery Carmen.
Josè’s attempts to tame the freedom-loving beauty are futile, and when she leaves him for the famous matador Escamillo, all three are engulfed in the flames of jealousy and revenge.
Natalie Weir’s Carmen is a free spirit; dangerous, volatile and vulnerable, brought to vivid life by three dancers playing her different states of mind and alter egos.

Dark acts result in darker consequences. And there is little that’s darker and more complicated than the act of revenge.
A family torn apart by murder, a son burdened with the truth and the task of avenging his father, and a country on the brink of war.
Anguish, passion and desperation collide in this tragic telling of Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark who is tormented by the impossibility of his dilemma, and who remains one of theatre’s most fascinating characters.
Damien Ryan, returning to Bell Shakespeare following the critically acclaimed Henry V in 2014, will deliver a new production of Hamlet, infused with the passion, contemplation and emotion that Shakespeare’s compelling poetry cries out for. Josh McConville (Griffin Theatre Company’s The Boys and Sydney Theatre Company’s Mojo) and Matilda Ridgway (Sport For Jove’s A Doll’s House) will delve into the depths of the complexity, violence, philosophical reflection, madness and maddening seduction of Hamlet.

IER In 2014 Monkey Baa Theatre Company created a play and workshop series exploring the themes around The Unknown
Soldier. Who is he, what is he and what does he represent to Australians today?
Set on the battlefields of WW1 and in 21st century Australia, our play follows the dual journeys of a 16 year-old soldier fighting for King and Country, and a modern-day 11 year-old boy who questions how anyone can simply just disappear.
The common thread weaving through all Monkey Baa’s work is the belief that young people’s interests are valued and respected. They strive to ensure that young people, wherever they are located and whatever their economic circumstances, have the opportunity to share in fantastic theatre experiences that reflect their own experience of life in this country.

THE 26-STOREY TREEHOUSE
Well, what are you waiting for? Come on up! THEY’RE BACK!
Yes, that’s right. Andy and Terry had such a ball with their crash-landing entry into the world of theatre with The 13-Storey Treehouse, they’re back for more. 13 storeys more, in fact. AND YOU’RE INVITED!
You know what 13 more storeys means. More INVENTIONS – like the 78 flavour ice-cream dispensing robot and the brain bamboozling Maze of Doom (not to mention the self-inflating underpants) and more things to go WRONG – not least of which is the very real possibility that the entire show is a complete and utter disaster. Will Andy and Terry push their friend Jill to her absolute limits? And who is this shady Hector Houtkop, with a really bad pirate accent? And what about ALL THOSE PIRATES?

“Dahl delights and revolts. A treat for mums, dads and the littlies… the audience lapped it up... It’s old fashioned storytelling that stays true to the spirit of Dahl and it inspires us to rediscover his work.” The Courier-Mail

Don’t Shoot Me, I’m STILL only the Piano Player!
Arunaway success in the West End, at successive Edinburgh Festivals, at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and right across the USA, this is a hilarious send-up of classical music, which has established Australian pianist, David Scheel, as the successor to the legendary
Victor Borge.
Hear a familiar tune played in the styles of the old masters + an i-Pod; two famous pieces played simultaneously, one with the right hand, one with the left, plus his “translation” of the lyrics of Waltzing Matilda, already a comedy classic, as well as a special musical tribute to mark the centenary of Gallipoli.

Annie Get Your Gun, Top Hat, Easter Parade, Can Can and High Society.
