Dear readers, As I am sure you are aware, we are approaching a new industrial age. “Industry 4.0” was a forward-thinking project the German federal government initially introduced at the 2011 Hanover Fair. Four years later, Industry 4.0 is on everyone’s lips and has become a real mega trend. It is a vision with revolutionary potential, not only for Schreiner Group.

Industry 4.0 is defined as the complete reorga-nization and fully networked control of value creation processes. Smart components com-municate with their tools thanks to integrated chips, allowing them to be addressed and identified. Machines interact with each other along the entire value chain, which opens up awesome possibilities.

As a high-tech company, Schreiner Group has also extensively been looking at how Industry 4.0 can help make manufacturing processes more flexible, transparent and efficient.

› 1833 England, conveyor belt is introduced

› 1834 Moritz Jacobi, electric motor

Industry 4.0 Will the fourth revolution come?

Late stage customization, a topic we covered in last year’s winter issue of Forum, is an example of this. It means that we produce large volumes of functional labels on conventional printing presses. These labels are subsequently cus-tomized in a final process step on a digital print-ing press. As a result, we can make functional labels available in small batches or quickly respond to requirements for different types of labels.

Still, there will be no factories without people. Fully automated and highly flexibilized mass production would reach economic limits. The automation of subsystems, which would make the work of employees on the shop floor tre-mendously easier, seems to be a more realistic prospect. So, the role of people in the context of Industry 4.0 will change from an operator to one that is more of a coordinator. Instead of playing the “violin in a concert,” people will be “conducting the orchestra.”

But not only our own manufacturing operations are in focus, as Industry 4.0 has major signifi-cance for us on the product level as well. We already have the ability today to manufacture labels with integrated RFID storage chips as a prerequisite for actively controlling machines. Thanks to such RFID labels the entire value chain, from the manufacturer, to the processor, to the assembler, is consistently provided with the information it requires—in real time and without any need for specifically programmed software.

Thanks to our more than 15 years of experience as a top supplier in the field of RFID we are per-fectly poised to make a contribution to Industry 4.0.

Yours,

Ritrama S.p.A. is Supplier of the Year

For the third time, Schreiner Group has recognized a supplier with the best annual Quality, Logistics, Collaboration and Cost Development rating. This time, Ritrama S.p.A. won the “Supplier of the Year 2014” award. Ritrama primarily supplies self-adhesive films to Schreiner Group and, in addition to receiving a very high overall rating, showed an impressive overall per-formance improvement in all relevant criteria.

Norbert Kreitmeir, Team Leader Purchasing Raw Materials at Schreiner Group, presented the award to Ricardo Rink, the CEO of the family-owned Italian company, in March 2015. At a meeting at Schreiner Group’s Oberschleiss heim headquarters, both parties agreed to intensify their cooperation. Norbert Kreitmeir is convinced that by taking this step Schreiner Group will be able to supply even better products to the pharmaceutical, auto-motive and electronics industries in the future, as the materials from Ritrama are used for these sectors. “We need partners that, in addi-tion to supplying materials of the right qual-ity, superbly cooperate with us so that we can offer our customers optimum solutions for their specific applications,” Kreitmeir said.

The aspect of cooperation was rated in criteria such as contractual situation, transparency of quotations, defect correction processes and development collaboration. In total, 50 suppli-ers of production materials—from films, paper and ink through to production-related tools such as dies—were compared with each other. The companies were selected by delivery vol-ume and strategic importance. In Purchasing, Schreiner Group pursues the overall goal of continually optimizing the cost structure in the supply chain through close collaboration, early involvement, contribution of know-how and a lean procurement strategy.

For the first time, Schreiner Group also presented

a “smaller” but extremely capable supplier with

a special award. “Performer of the Year” went to

TOP 100 Companies: Schreiner Group is Innovator of the Year

Lucky Winner: Roland Schreiner

6 Schreiner Group

A tremendous success for Schreiner Group: in the prestigious “TOP 100” inno-vation competition, it was recognized as the most innovative among Germany’s mid-sized companies.

The judges’ decision was based on the results of a comprehensive questionnaire in the cat-egories of “Innovation-Encouraging Top Man-agement,” “Innovation Climate,” “Innovative Processes and Organization,” “Innovation Mar-keting and External Orientation” and “Innova-tion Success.”

During a company tour, the members of the judging panel chaired by Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Franke from the Department of Entrepreneur-ship and Innovation of the Vienna University of Economics and Business received a first-hand impression of Schreiner Group’s innovation management—an impression that obviously had a lasting effect, as the judging panel of pro-fessionals stated in the justification of its selec-tion: “Schreiner Group impressed the TOP 100 judges as an agile, strong-growth mid-size company with a comprehensive and holistic understanding of innovation.”

In addition, the TOP 100 judging panel recognized “the smooth transition from the second to the third family generation at the helm of the company that gave new impetus to innova-tion.” In the judges’ opinion, Schreiner Group had done an exemplary job of manag-ing this change, as the tran-sition was also used to con-tinue driving the evolution of the innovation processes:

“The conceptual basis for this is provided by ‘Strategy 2020,’ which Roland Schreiner devel-oped together with the members

of top management. In pursuing this strategy, the company succeeded in expanding its inter-nal, innovation-related communication, which further improved its positive innovation climate,” the judging panel added in its justification.

“Innovation is a company value that is being lived at Schreiner Group. All employees are consis-tently encouraged to think outside the box and to contribute new ideas. Therefore, the TOP 100 award is tremendous confirmation of our striving for innovation,” said a pleased Roland Schreiner at the awards ceremony held at the

“German Mittelstand Summit” in Essen where he was presented with the accolade by mentor and science journalist Ranga Yogeshwar.

In the FINAT Label Competition 2015, Schreiner Group was among the award winners honored at the FINAT Congress in Amsterdam as well. In the Marketing/End-uses-Security group, our

“Parts Marking Label with Authentication Fea-tures” was 1st. The marking label is directly applied to a molded plastic part or a painted metal cover. It is equipped with a covert Bit-Secure copy protection feature. This feature can be read by a smartphone for reliable prod-uct authentication by inspectors, customs offi-cials and distributors.

Julia Klampfl is being trained as an office admin-istrator, now in the third and final year of her apprenticeship. In an interview with Schreiner Forum, the 19-year-old looks back on her expe-riences to date and explains how she managed the change from school to the office.

Why did you want to become an office administrator?Julia Klampfl: My training provides a very good foundation for many career paths. I wanted to gain insight into office processes and get to know different functions within a company.

What makes a good office administrator in your opinion?Working in a conscientious and well-structured way is very important. My supervisors have to be able to rely on me. So I have to adjust to their requirements and wishes because that’s the only way I can best support them.

What are your daily tasks? At the moment, I’m spending a year in our accounting department. I check invoices, scan them for our accounting system and refer them to the appropriate recipient. Initially, I spent two years in HR management and assisted our training manager, Ms. Piplak-Föhl, in organizing events for apprentices and man-aging apprenticeship applications. Whenever the candidates that came for interviews were nervous I clearly remembered how I felt at first. I think being nervous is totally normal.

So, what do you do as an Apprentice being trained as an Office Administrator?

“It’s totally normal to be nervous at first”

What has been your personal highlight in your apprenticeship so far?My vocational school, with support from Schreiner Group, gave me the opportunity to gain some experience abroad in a London company. There, I helped arrange appoint-ments, received visitors and installed phone connections. And all of it in English! That was a tremendous experience for me.

What has been your greatest challenge so far?For me, switching from school to work at the beginning of my apprenticeship was a huge change. I was fresh out of school and not used to being at the office all day. Expecta-tions and the large number of tasks were a pretty big challenge for me, too. Ms. Piplak-Föhl really supported me during this time and showed me how important it is to always think positive.

Has ‘sticking it out’ been worth the effort?Yes, absolutely. I’m happy that I successfully struggled through the difficult early stage and have gotten as far as I have. Thanks to my apprenticeship I not only developed my skills but also my personality in the past three years. Today, I have a lot more self-confidence and courage.

Up to ten percent of all recipients of organ transplants in Germany are

children. The risks involved in such surgery continually decrease and

the survival rate is 90 percent. But the long wait for a donor organ is a

great burden. “Children’s Aid Organ Transplant” assists families in need

with money, rest & recreation, and good advice. The charity, for instance,

organizes seminars for parents, summer camps for children or family

vacations, and assumes the costs for travel, hotels and household help.

If you’d like to help as well, you’ll find further details at

www.kiohilfe.de.

Schreiner Group’s beach volleyball community is growing! For the first time, two teams of our Schreiner Hot Volleys competed in the 2015 KiO Beach Cup in Lohhof. 30 teams were pit-ted against each other in the event held on July 4 in Unterschleissheim as a fund raiser for the KiO “Children’s Aid Organ Transplant” charity. Besides Microsoft and Team Robinson Club, the mayor of Schleissheim, Christoph Böck, competed with his “City Council” team.

The volleyball enthusiasts among our colleagues already had plenty of fun during the regular practice sessions before the tournament. By now, the employees from various parts of the company have gelled together as a great team.

In 2007, Schreiner Group’s Happy Runners put on their running shoes for the first time. By now, 58 employees who enjoy running compete in a total of seven events. The “Munich Marathon” in fall is the highlight on the running calendar. Nine runners have already registered for this mammoth challenge. In total, the Happy Runners are going to cover another impressive 1,300 kilometers in competitions this year, which equates to the distance between Munich and Barcelona.

Many of the company’s employees only took up running due to the Happy Runners. The joint competitions encourage and motivate them to regularly train. Running is for everyone: whether you run by yourself, in a group or even with a baby buggy! Plus, running is good for you: it trains the cardiovascular system, activates the immune system, causes fat cells to shrink, strengthens the muscles and works off stress. In a nutshell: running makes you feel better.

Six apprentices from Schreiner Group will be waging a campaign against energy hogs. As “energy scouts” they are going to hunt down potential savings, document them and actively contribute to improve-ments.

In collaboration with the Munich and Upper Bavarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce, a qualification workshop was held at our Bruck-mannring site in April to prepare them for this mission. 27 apprentices from 13 companies were taught fundamentals about energy, from production through to consumption. The partic-ipants learned how to efficiently use energy and how to handle the relevant measuring equip-ment. Subsequently, they tried out their new skills and the devices at three different stations.

“At Schreiner Group, saving energy is not just up to me as the company’s energy represen-tative but a responsibility assumed by every single employee. I’m happy that, together with the CIC, we’ve been able to engage our young people in this important topic as well,” said Dr. Thomas Gulden, Sustainability Representative of Schreiner Group.

A final exchange of experience at a large round-table concluded this action-packed day at Schreiner Group.

Following the theoretical part about efficient

energy usage …

Guaranteed to be eco-FriendlyFrom 2016 to 2018, Schreiner Group will exclusi-

vely be using green electricity at its headquarters

on Bruckmannring in Oberschleissheim. The new

three-year power supply agreement guarantees

the supply of electric power from renewable

energy sources that have been certified by TÜV

Süd. 100 percent of this energy is generated by

certified hydropower plants. For Schreiner Group,

this amounts to a reduction of CO2 emissions by an

impressive 50 percent.

Teaming up for Energy Efficiency

Billed as “Energy Efficiency in Planning,” the 5th Energy Efficiency Workshop of the Net-work Munich-Upper Bavaria was held at Schreiner Group on March 5. Sustainability Representative Dr. Thomas Gulden welcomed 19 representatives of renowned companies and institutions to Bruckmannring.

The participants initially reviewed the machine specifications of Schreiner Group and HAWE Hydraulik SE, as well as facility specifications of Hilti GmbH. All of these focal topics were looked at under the aspect of energy-efficient plant & equipment planning. Schreiner Group, for instance, commits its suppliers to the pro-duction of energy-efficient machines and com-ponents and checks their energy consumption when the equipment is commissioned. The 2014 monitoring results were subsequently presented in a review session. Nearly ten per-cent energy savings achieved since 2010 are an impressive success!

Clinical trials are often conducted inter-nationally and require high accuracy, reliable processes as well as efficiency and speed. Therefore, it is particularly important that trial drugs are reliably marked and provided with all important information.

Among other things, the EU’s new Falsified Medicines Directive 2011/62/EU requires a security seal for the outer packaging of medicines. Pharmacists can then only access the package insert after destroy-ing the seal which is meant to form a bar-rier and indicate tampering if destroyed. Together with the packaging manufac-turer Edelmann, Schreiner MediPharm has developed a convincing solution that makes important product information accessible without opening the pack.

The international family-owned company Edel-mann based in Heidenheim, Germany, is a leading manufacturer of folding boxes, and the healthcare sector is one of its main business segments. In a joint project with Schreiner

MediPharm as a leading manufacturer of spe-cialty labels for the pharmaceutical industry, both companies collaborated to develop a packaging solution combining a folding box with a Booklet-Label applied to the outside.

Applied to the outer packaging, the multi-page Booklet-Label makes even multi-lingual pro-duct information easily accessible and readily visible without damaging the original pack. It reliably adheres to the pack and is easy to open and close again with the top layer of the film. The Booklet-Label developed by Schreiner MediPharm for this purpose is additionally equipped with a security color-shifting ink for integrated protection against counterfeiting.

“The solution that has been jointly developed with Edelmann maintains the integrity of the pack, while allowing easy access to the pack-age insert,” says Robert Unglert, Senior Sales Director at Schreiner MediPharm. The patient benefits from the booklet applied to the pack as well, because it is easy to open and close again. Since the booklet is firmly attached to the pack, it is also less likely to be misplaced.

The solution by Schreiner mediPharm and edelmann:The package insert is easy to access by pharmacists and patients without affect-ing the first-opening protection of the pack.

Innovative labels. Smart solutions.

As one of the world’s leading manufacturers of diesel injection systems Bosch also attaches utmost importance to top-quality repairs. Schreiner ProTech supplies a plastic clip with a laser-inscribed code and human-readable text, as well as two silver-colored labels made from Color Laser Film (CLF), to provide appropriate proof. With Bosch QualityScan, the company now offers repair centers and end users convenient and transparent documentation of common-rail component repairs by autho-rized repair centers via the internet.

Certainty through Transparency

16 Schreiner ProTech

To provide customers with proof that original components and certified repair processes were used for their repairs of common-rail injec-tors and pumps, the components are marked with an individual code at Bosch Diesel Centers and Bosch Diesel Services. The end user can subsequently scan the code on a smartphone by means of an app and will immediately receive confirmation that the repair job was performed according to the manufacturer’s instructions and with original spare parts.

In the case of common-rail injectors for specific commercial vehicles, the code is located on a plastic clip for which Schreiner ProTech, together with Bosch, has developed a laser inscription with a code and human readable text. For mark-ing other components with ID labels, as desired by Bosch, Schreiner ProTech was able to draw on its CLF silver solution, which has been suc-cessfully used in mass production. Schreiner ProTech produces and delivers both the laser-inscribed plastic clips and the ID labels to Bosch in customized forms of packaging.

“This provides us with exactly the two solutions we need from a single source,” says Dirk Schoenfeld, Engineering Project Manager Auto-motive Aftermarket at Bosch, in commenting on the innovative proof of quality that is progres-sively being rolled out in Europe this year. Key Account Manager Axel Müller from Schreiner ProTech emphasizes: “We always strive to offer industry customers like Bosch an efficient total solution. By using our tried-and-tested Color Laser Film and the new development for laser-inscribing the plastic clips we quickly and suc-cessfully achieved a solution for two markedly different requirements.”

Smart meters provide exact consumption data for electricity and gas. For marking the corresponding gateways of the world’s leading manufacturer Landis+Gyr, Schreiner ProTech has developed a new manufacturing technology and specialty labels based on a solution using the tried-and-tested PreScript film.

“We opted for labels instead of direct marking because this gives us greater printing flexibility and the injection points resulting from plas-tics injection molding are covered. In addition, direct marking would have required a higher initial investment. The solution by Schreiner ProTech optimally meets all our requirements,” says Klaus-Jürgen Leiting, Senior Project Man-ager at Landis+Gyr.

To ensure maximum process reliability, the Competence Center Schreiner Services was contracted to recommend a printing/dispens-ing application system that is used as a semi-automatic workstation in the prototype stage and can subsequently be integrated into the automatic production line. To apply the label on the slightly curved surface, a special stamp had to be produced. In addition, tight print-ing and application tolerances have to be

Innovative solutions—economically attractive

Innovative Cooperation:Schreiner ProTech together with Siemens has developed the first production-level UHF RFID label

with a 4K chip on the market.

High Storage CapacityThanks to High RFID Expertise

18 Schreiner ProTech

Right on time for this year’s Hanover Fair Siemens was able to unveil its new Simatic RF600 reader generation together with an equally new UHF RFID label with a 4K chip (4 Kbytes). It was developed in coopera-tion between Siemens, Schreiner ProTech and the Competence Center Schreiner LogiData.

The new UHF RFID label with a 4K chip is designed for end user applications requiring an elevated chip storage volume. Examples include complex processes in production con-trol or the permanent storage of production-relevant data on the product or transport con-tainer across the product’s lifecycle in sectors like the automotive or the process industries.

The technology corporation had opted for Schreiner Group as its development partner due to Schreiner ProTech’s industry-specific process knowledge and Schreiner LogiData’s specific RFID label manufacturing know-how and knowledge of suitable suppliers and coop-eration partners.

The challenging functionalities specified by Siemens were already achieved after the initial measurement results, as well as the targeted market launch at this year’s Hanover Fair. “As a result, we managed to present the first pro-duction-level UHF RFID label with a 4K chip on the market together with a new Siemens reader generation, as planned,” says Klaus Müller, Product Manager RFID at Siemens.

For Michael Drollmann, Senior Sales Manager at Schreiner ProTech, this is another project that proves the company’s high in-house expertise in RFID solutions: “For years, we’ve intensively been driving proprietary developments in this field together with our Competence Cen-ter Schreiner LogiData. We’re delighted that we’ve now been able to successfully leverage this expertise in an important contract develop-ment for a leading technology corporation like Siemens as well.”

Parking in big cities can be pretty tedious. Once you’ve found a garage with vacant places, approaching the gate to pull a ticket may involve some awkward maneu-vering. Before exiting again, you have to go to a machine to pay your parking fee. But parking can be a lot more convenient!

evopark, a start-up company based in Düs-seldorf, Germany, now makes parking a lot less complicated with an innovative applica-tion. After registering on the evopark website, drivers can use an app on their mobile phone to show them all the available public parking places in the city and how to find them. Fur-thermore, registered users will receive a per-sonal “evotag” by regular mail. It comes with an RFID chip that uses wireless communication technology to automatically open the gates of participating parking facilities. This eliminates the need for awkward maneuvering in front of a gate and pulling a parking ticket. As the evotag automatically enables cashless payment, there is no need to go to a pay station either. Instead, users can just get back into their cars and drive out once they’ve finished shopping or other business in the city. In addition, partnering with the local retail and catering trade reduces the parking fees for evopark customers, as the par-ticipating companies provide credits to absorb part of the fees. The remainder of the fees are transparently billed and collected at the end of the month by direct bank account debit or credit card charges.

The technology that makes this driver-friendly innovation possible includes the evotag, a windshield label that the Schreiner PrinTrust business unit has developed jointly with the Competence Center Schreiner LogiData for evopark. “Due to our expertise in the field of automatic vehicle identification for parking facil-ity management and toll fee data acquisition we were able to quickly offer evopark a suit-able solution,” says Dr. Kai Schnapauff, Head of Strategic Marketing and Business Development at Schreiner PrinTrust. “From our perspective, the windshield labels from Schreiner PrinTrust work perfectly,” Tobias Weiper, CEO of evopark GmbH, is pleased to confirm. “Recognition of the tag at the gates is very reliable and fast. Most customers only have to briefly stop when entering the garage.”

The New Way to Park

Customers can have credits granted by retailers booked directly to their evopark account.

The gates automatically open for cars with an “evotag”—most customers barely have to stop when entering the garage.

Parking can be so easy: the QR code takes users to a brief video which vividly illustrates the driver-friendly innovation that has been created through the coopera-tion between evopark and Schreiner PrinTrust.

Schreiner Group as an innovative high-tech printing company operates according to the highest security standards. This is a prerequisite for security-relevant con-tracts being awarded by banks, govern-ment authorities and certain customers from the pharmaceutical and automotive sectors. Numerous certificates confirm the quality of the company’s professional security management and its seamless implementation across all processes.

The condition that confidentiality and access protection of data and products across all pro-cess stages of the value chain must be guaran-teed one hundred percent is the driver behind Schreiner Group’s security commitment. Spe-cific measures include a security fence, doors, gates and windows protected by alarm sys-tems, permanent video surveillance, employ-ment of guards in production operations and special security doors that only provide access via biometric identifiers. All these systems are permanently connected to the control center of the security service, which guarantees that no unauthorized personnel have access to restricted areas. The processing of sensitive information is subject to numerous rules and the IT Security Policy.

“The interaction between technical and orga-nizational measures is decisive for the effec-tiveness of a security concept. All employees involved in these processes at Schreiner Group are aware of the great responsibility they have for the security of the company and its prod-ucts,” says Security Manager Torsten Lucht. In addition to the secure production environment, this includes the seamless protection of stor-age, transportation and shipping of the security products. Assigning security classifications to the products, recording numbered products in a tracking & tracing database and complete transparency of the production and distribution process play a crucial part in this as well. Numer-ous certifications, such as the one awarded by the particularly strict North American Security Product Organization (NASPO), confirm that Schreiner Group meets these stringent require-ments. This certification has been awarded to the Schreiner PrinTrust and Schreiner ProTech

business units, and to the Competence Center Schreiner ProSecure. The certification of the NFC-Sticker from Schreiner PrinTrust by the exacting credit card company MasterCard® is another example. Independent organizations such as DEKRA, FOGRA and the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) test whether the products conform to the security specifications of the customers. In addition, vendors of high-security products and customers periodically conduct audits to check the company’s compli-ance with all security-related requirements.

The KeySecure code can be scanned with a smartphone for authentication. As the authenticity of the gold bar is checked several times throughout the process the customer determines in advance the number of queries for which the code is to be valid. A green check mark indicates a valid query. When the number of valid queries is exceeded a red check mark appears.

Precious metals are valuable. Therefore, the anti-counterfeiting marking and serial-ization of gold and silver bars or coins is important. The combination of various security features offers maximum protec-tion against counterfeiting.

MünzManufaktur has been producing coins, medals and bars for over 30 years and con-tracted Schreiner ProSecure to develop a secu-rity marking. “We want to deter counterfeiters from copying our gold bars or coins based on inferior materials with such a marking,” says Managing Director Tobias Dalacker.

Ideal marking solutions combine visual anti-counterfeiting technology with a modern serial-ization solution such as the KeySecure system by Schreiner ProSecure. KeySecure offers a complete solution for authenticity protection of products together with other value added ser-vices, as well as track & trace applications, and is easy to utilize by the end user without any tools.

In the field of precious metals, the KeySecure system links security features on a label with others that are directly embossed on the bars or coins on a common web platform. Every end user, such as anyone involved in the lifecycle of the precious metals, bank employees or buy-ers, can scan the KeySecure code on a smart-phone for easy and fast authentication via the ProSecure security server. At the same time, the end user receives an explanation of the security features to be checked on the web portal.

The labels utilized for this solution are delivered in pairs. They consist of a special material with tamper indication, a so-called void effect. The KeySecure code is applied to a label in human-readable form and as a Datamatrix Code (DMC). A sister label bears the same KeySecure code, plus the customer’s logo in color-shifting ink. Additionally, the KeySecure serialization is linked with the “slot number” of the raw gold batches, which is not visible to the end user. One of the paired labels is directly applied to the gold bar at the customer’s site and the second one with the same encrypted serial number is applied to the outer packaging.

On the Trail of Gold and Silver

“With this solution, Schreiner ProSecure has again proved its expertise as a supplier of cus-tomized solutions that are precisely tailored to the specific application,” says André Siebe-neicher, Business Development Manager at Schreiner ProSecure. “We can provide the cus-tomer with independent advice because we are not committed to particular security technolo-gies. This starts with the right choice of adhe-sive for special substrates and extends all the way to selecting the suitable anti-counterfeiting features and incorporating KeySecure into cus-tomer portals that can be used to generate fur-ther value added.”

Intelligent marking solutions for technical protection against product piracy in mechanical engineering: this was the focal topic of Schreiner ProTech’s booth at this year’s Hanover Fair.

Together with the experts of the Competence Center Schreiner ProSecure, the team show-cased the latest security solutions there and provided information on how wear and spare parts in particular can be effectively protected. A live demonstrator breathed life into the buzz-word “Industry 4.0” and met with outstanding response by the trade fair visitors. “We marked power banks, in other words mobile cell phone chargers, with a Datamatrix Code and our Bit-Secure copy protection pattern and combined this pairing with a counterfeit- and tamper-proof packaging seal,” Thomas Voelcker, Head of Strategic Marketing and Business Development at Schreiner ProSecure, said, explaining this highlight at the trade fair booth. Visitors then had the opportunity to check the authenticity of the copy protection pattern and seal directly on site, using a handheld reader or a dedicated smartphone.

Schreiner Services + Schreiner PrinTronics 25

The Competence Center Schreiner Services offers extensive value-adding services such as consulting support, pro-vision of processing machines or convert-ing of customer material, be it for the launch of a new production series or to extend the customer’s capacities. As a result, customers are supported on-site with the required know-how and appro-priate means of production.

Schreiner Group is known for developing and manufacturing high-end functional labels for individual customer requirements. As these particular functional parts are becoming increasingly specialized, they make growing demands on the processing technologies to be used. The Competence Center Schreiner Services assists customers in closing any gaps that may exist in meeting these demands by contributing its experience and in-house tech-nical capacities.

Classic scenarios include the launch of new pro-cesses driven by the goal of accelerating time-to-market. While volumes may still be small at this point, the demands are high already and cannot be met yet by the production resources available in the customer’s operations. Or the customer’s capacities are already fully utilized but innovations cannot wait.

For these and similar cases, the Competence Center Schreiner Services offers comprehen-sive services from a single source that add sig-nificant value to the actual product a customer purchases from Schreiner Group. As a result, important innovations are not hampered by temporary bottlenecks and the customer can successfully implement them at the desired pace.

“RFID expertise com-bined with extensive know-how in printed electronics”

With RFID and printed electronics grow-ing together, “hybrid systems” will also be found in future solutions such as those for product and brand protection. Schreiner Group is already working on the develop-ment of such innovative label systems with multiple functions and benefits.

The term “hybrid” had its first origins in Greek and stands for something “bundled, cross-bred or mixed.” In the case of labels, it refers to the combination of RFID and printed electronics for example. This makes it possible to incorporate more and more functions in a single label—such as electronic first-opening indication in a label for product and brand protection. A printed sensor detects the first opening of a pack and the RFID chip that is applied to it transmits the data to a corresponding system or reader. If necessary, such a solution may be combined with additional functions such as a temperature sensor for pharmaceutical products.

“We combine the RFID expertise of Schreiner LogiData with the extensive know-how of Schreiner PrinTronics in the field of printed elec-tronics. As a result, we have in-house capabili-ties to fully develop and produce such innova-tive, multifunctional overall solutions, consisting of a printed antenna, capacitor and chip, plus an RFID chip applied to them as in the case of other RFID labels,” says Frank Linti, Busi-ness Development Manager RFID at Schreiner LogiData. “At the moment, we’re expanding our expertise in evaluating new product solutions and manufacturing options by purchasing a bench-mounted applicator for direct insertion of the relevant components,” Johannes Becker, President of Schreiner PrinTronics, adds.

This was the motto of LogiMAT 2015 held in Stuttgart this Febru-ary. Thanks to signifi-

cant growth in all areas this year’s event has been the most successful intralogistics trade fair in LogiMAT history to date. Schreiner Group was represented with a booth. Business Devel-opment Manager Frank Linti from Schreiner LogiData talks about his trade fair experiences in an interview with Schreiner Forum.

What impressions did you take home from LogiMAT 2015?

The trade fair has been recording continuous growth and is the most important one for RFID topics in the German-speaking regions. South-ern Germany is an important automotive loca-tion that is home to many major manufacturers and suppliers. Our booth attracted a large num-ber of visitors—particularly prospects who were specifically seeking us out due to our innovative products.

The trade fair was billed as “Mastering complexity-intelligent design for the future.” How do products from Schreiner Group contribute to this?

With our wide and innovative portfolio of RFID labels for marking metal products we’re unique in the marketplace. We can offer the appropri-ate solution for any requirement—be it for very high temperatures such as those in the paint shop or small label sizes. To name two specific

highlight products: Our ((rfid))-DistaFerr High-Temp label guarantees reliable data reading of about two meters even at high temperatures and directly on metal. It withstands several cycles of up to 230 °C. The ((rfid))-DistaFerr ESD on the other hand impressed the trade fair visitors with its small dimensions in combina-tion with about two meters of read range. This enables bulk reading of ESD containers on a forklift for example.

You held a presentation about innovative RFID data storage media for Industry 4.0 at LogiMAT. What was the response?

Industry 4.0 is currently on everyone’s agenda. It’s the central topic at the moment, so the auditorium was filled accordingly. Industry 4.0 refers to integrating products and machines in intelligent networks. For manufacturers of the smart storage media of the future this means the individual component will practically carry all of its information on a label and directly tell the machine how it has to be processed. RFID labels will play a crucial part in this. This is a revolution on unit level which the pioneers are gradually implementing. More than likely, it will take ten to twenty years to accomplish this transformation across the board. We’re at the beginning of an exciting production age at the moment!

Even the smallest components and objects must be able to reliably communicate with each other today: be it in asset manage-ment, for product marking or the increas-ing integration of systems in networks of

“smart factory” concepts. A new RFID UHF label from Schreiner LogiData featuring an extremely compact design adheres to smallest spaces even on metallic sub-strates and enables read ranges of up to one meter in spite of its small size.

With mere dimensions of 10 mm x 50 mm x 1.7 mm, the new ((rfid))-DistaFerr Mini label from Schreiner LogiData is currently the small-est UHF RFID label version which Schreiner Group’s competence center has developed for RFID applications on metal. The label is only about half as wide as the ((rfid))-DistaFerr SL label with 22.5 mm x 52 mm x 1.7 mm that adheres to metal as well. “There’s currently no smaller UHF RFID label anywhere in the world that’s suitable for use on metal,” says Frank Linti, Business Development Manager RFID at Schreiner LogiData.

((rfid))-DistaFerr Mini is powerful enough to achieve acceptable read ranges even on very small components or housings thanks to UHF. The label is suitable for on-site programming and variable TTR printing by the user.

The solution can automatically transmit pro-duction-specific data to a UHF RFID reader in a machine. As a result, it is perfectly suited as a service label or intelligent means of commu-nication between product and machine. Key-in-lock solutions of the kind that are already being achieved based on HF with maximum read ranges of 5 to 10 cm are now possible with read ranges of up to one meter based on UHF as well. An RFID antenna developed by Schreiner LogiData for this purpose ensures optimum read quality.

In addition to these possibilities, which are also very attractive for Industry 4.0 concepts, the solution is suitable for use in asset management for metallic and non-metallic objects, housings or components that provide only minimal space for an RFID label but are to be clearly identified by using handheld readers.
