Fundraising for the 80,000 square-foot Mountaineer Center, a modern recreation and athletics facility, is underway with a $1 million gift from the Floyd A. & Kathleen C. Cailloux Foundation.

“The Mountaineer Center will be tangible evidence of Schreiner’s recognition that educating the whole person includes providing quality facilities for recreation, wellness and athletics,” said Schreiner’s president, Dr. Tim Summerlin.

“It is one element not yet realized in the amazing renaissance of campus facilities of the last seven years. But we have made this commitment to our students, present and future, and we have the exciting challenge now to deliver on that commitment. The students deserve nothing less,” he said.

Chairman of the Mountaineer Center Campaign and current Schreiner trustee, Rick Cree ’67, of Dallas, said the center is the next step in the evolution of Schreiner’s infrastructure.

“This is leading Schreiner even further on the way to having a world-class campus,” he said.

Scheduled for completion in 2009, the center will prove to be an essential recruiting tool for athletes and non-athletes alike, and offer current students a safe and attractive place to gather.

Schreiner University has announced its 2006 Distinguished Alumnus and Athletic Hall of Honor inductees. Peter W. Baldwin and Wendell Mayes Jr. have been named Distinguished Alumni. Tom Ball Jr. will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Honor. Rex Kelly, William G. Gillis and W. C. Weir will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Honor posthumously. The six men will be honored at a banquet on April 1 during Recall, Schreiner University’s annual homecoming event.

Peter W. BaldwinPeter W. Baldwin ’47, a former member of the board of trustees (1966-2004), played an instrumental role during Schreiner’s transition to a

baccalaureate institution and co-chaired Schreiner’s successful $70 million comprehensive campaign.

“He has a vision of achievement for Schreiner that encourages and motivates others to join with him in making that vision come true,” said Karen Kilgore, Schreiner’s consultant for planned giving, who nominated Baldwin.

It is that vision that continues to inspire him and those he comes in contact with.

“Schreiner has played such a big part in my life. I am very proud of the school and the progress it has made,” Baldwin said. “I know my entire experience with Schreiner has been rewarding to me. Even when walking the old bull ring, I probably would have argued the point. Their personal attention to each student is part of the

reason that Schreiner is successful today in making responsible adults out of children.”

Wendell Mayes Jr.Wendell Mayes Jr. ’42 is not one to rest on

his laurels. After a long and distinguished career in broadcasting, Mayes decided to return to college and pursue a bachelor’s degree from St. Edwards University. He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in computer science, 50 years after earning his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University.

“People always ask me why I decided to go back to school,” he said. “The honest answer is that I just want to learn some more things. I didn’t want to sit around and do nothing all day, and there are an awful lot of things I don’t know that I would like to learn.”

That insatiable appetite for knowledge, which began at Schreiner Institute, has led Mayes through an extraordinary life marked by his commitment to helping others.

At the age of 10, Mayes’ son was diagnosed with diabetes, and since that time he has remained steadfast in his dedication to furthering diabetes research.

He served as the chairman of the American Diabetes Association (A.D.A.) for three years and as president of the International Diabetes Foundation, the first non-medical person to hold the position. That honor lead to the A.D.A. creating the group’s highest non-scientific award in his name.

Spencer Blocker ’52 said of the man he nominated: “He is the most giving person that you will ever meet.”

Tom Ball Jr.When Tom Ball Jr. ’42 entered Schreiner Institute in 1940, he was already a celebrated high school football player. To this day he is remembered

throughout East Texas as a versatile triple threat running back, who was strong on both offense and defense.

In his freshman year at Schreiner, Ball excelled as half-back and punter. According to the 1940 Recall, the team, under coach Rex Kelly, began the season with the motto, “Nothing less than the conference championship.” On November 22 that dream came true as Schreiner defeated Kilgore Junior College for the Texas Junior College Championship.

Of that season Recall modestly states, “Tom Ball’s punting….. was worthy of mention and commendations.”

He was named captain of the 1941 Mountaineers, and although the season record reflected four wins and three losses, Ball once again made a name for himself on the field.

After having his education disrupted to serve in World War II, he finished his education, receiving his B.B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1948. He also went on to distinguish himself in his professional life, retiring as a vice-president with Paine-Webber Investments in 1999.

In his nomination, Gene Marshall ’52 said, “I can only believe that were Coach Rex Kelly here today, he would be the first to second the nomination.”

W. C. (Heinie) WeirW.C. (Heinie) Weir ’45 was Schreiner Institute’s head football coach and athletic director from 1937 until 1945. After that he served in

a variety of other roles at Schreiner, retiring as academic dean in 1971.

Weir served as captain of the Texas A&M football team in his senior year there, wrote Sam M. Junkin ’51, former Schreiner president, in his nomination.

“When his leg was broken in a game, the A&M coach told the student body to be ready, that someone might be called from the stands during the game. Hence was born the 12th man tradition,” wrote Junkin.

He went on the say, “In many ways, Coach Weir was a stern man, one who did not rest easy with what he considered ‘nonsense.’ But he was respected and he served Schreiner admirably.”

William G. Gillis Jr. William G. Gillis Jr. ’37 distinguished himself while at Schreiner Institute, as the Best All-Around Cadet, a football and track letterman, and a

member of Phi Theta Kappa. He was from Cameron, Texas.

Maj. Gillis ’41 went on to glory at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he was a cadet lieutenant, captain of the 1940 football team and a three-year track letterman.

He was killed in action October 1, 1944 in Gremercy Forest in France during WW II. When he died, Gillis was married to Lenore Riley Mudge ’37.

Gillis received the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, Distinguished Service Order (British), Croix De Guerre, Silver Gilt and Vermillion Stars (French).

As a testament to his popularity and the legacy he left behind, West Point dedicated the Gillis Field House in his memory in 1989.

Rex KellyRex Kelly ’52 coached track and football and taught Spanish at Schreiner Institute from 1935 to 1952.

Sam Junkin ’51, who nominated Kelly, said,

“Rex was an outstanding track coach, but an even better friend. Often a friend to the least likely. Many are the stories of the young men Rex ’adopted’ when all others had given up. I have heard of those the administration voted to suspend, only for Rex to ask that they be given one more chance and that he be given responsibility. After his service to Schreiner, Rex became a full-time rancher, but he kept up his relationships with his athletes and other Schreiner students. He was a rare and wonderful man.”

I watched quite a few college bowl games over the holidays, much to Mary Ellen’s dismay, since she strongly prefers to view old West Wing episodes. I justify myself by turning the sound down to eliminate commentary and reading as I catch the action.

Did it seem to you that this year there were an abnormal number of games where one team captured an early, overwhelming lead and ended up either getting caught or nearly getting caught by its opponent? That was certainly my impression. One team gets up by 28-0 or 35-7, coasts along, and then has to hang on for dear life to win—if it succeeds in doing so.

How can this be so? Sometimes it is a matter of breaks evening out. Lucky bounces go the other way or the quarterback gets the wind to his advantage. But I believe something else was often at work as those leads evaporated late in the game. At times you could see the change on the screen. The winning team laughs on the sidelines. Defensive backs strut around as if they had only to show up to ensure success. Worst of all, players douse their coach with Gatorade while three minutes remain in the contest and their lead is only a precarious touchdown! Can’t we wait for Dandy Don to start “Turn Out the Lights?”

When we figure that for most of those competing, victory in a bowl game is an important goal, small wonder that we bang our heads (especially if it is our team involved) and ask, “Why? Why?” when we witness such foolishness. Alexander Pope would remind us that “What the weak head with strongest bias rules,/ Is pride, the never-failing vice of fools.” When I get so filled with my own superiority and truly believe the press clippings that I imagine will be produced the next day, then it gets easy to lose focus, become inattentive to task, and fail to remain true to the traits that got me where I am.

What is true in football games is true in many other endeavors. I’ve often thought that one of our greatest risks, when we are doing well at our work here at Schreiner, is that of losing our focus on mission and deluding ourselves that we can play our role out by rote. Fortunately, while the risk is always there, the evidence that I see in my colleagues on the faculty and staff is quite the contrary. Clock watching, self congratulations, and the tendency to forget why we are here in the first place—these are not traits commonly found among them. Knowing that makes it much easier to continue affirming the theme of “learning by heart” as reality rather than mere hype. And it makes me continually thankful to be working among such folks.

So for heaven’s sake, let’s stay away from that Gatorade barrel as long as the clock is still ticking!

Men’s BasketballThe Schreiner men’s basketball team (3-11 overall, 3-9 ASC) started the season slowly, but have showed significant improvement as the calendar turned to 2006. The team won two of their first four games in ’06: vs. Louisiana College and at Concordia-Austin. Even in the losses, Schreiner was in virtually every game going into the closing minutes. The best reason for optimism is that head coach Thirman Dimery’s team continues to improve and always plays hard. The challenge is that much of the remaining schedule is away from Kerrville and against the upper division teams in the ASC West.

The Mountaineers are led by juniors Jonathan Young (13 points, 4.5 rebounds) and Kevin Deans (13.5 points, 5 rebounds) and seniors Joseph Davis (8 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists) and Lance Hrncir (11 points, 4 rebounds).

Women’s BasketballFor the SU women’s basketball team, like the men’s team, 2006 has brought more success. The Schreiner women’s team

is 5-11 overall, 5-9 (at the time this went to press) in the ASC, and got hot in January, going 4-3. The Mountaineers started fast, winning in new head coach Jeanette McKinney’s first game (a 96-87 overtime road win at Texas Lutheran), then went through a winless streak, but bounced back in the new year. Not only are the wins starting to come, the really good news is that this very young team has three emerging stars that it hopes to count on for at least the next two years.

Freshman point guard Monica Enriquez leads the ASC in both scoring (20 points per game) and steals (5 per game) and is fourth in assists. Sophomore forward Vanessa Lopez is third in the ASC in scoring (19 points per game) and fourth in shooting percentage. Freshman forward Tasha Fennell is third in rebounding at 8.5 per game. The team has battled injury and illness and will be better off in the long run for what they’ve endured this year, said McKinney.

2005 Summer and Fall Graduates

A group of Schreiner University business students captured 12th place out of 1,694 teams in a recent global competition.

Team members who competed in the CAPSTONE Global Corporate Simulation Competition as team “Baldwin” are Mark Lenzo, Channan Cardella, and Amanda Brown, all of Kerrville; and Bradley McDonald of San Antonio.

Brown said the competition was an amazing opportunity to integrate all of the skills and knowledge she has accumulated in the past four years as a student in Schreiner’s Cailloux School of Professional Studies.

“In this simulation, we were able to see how decisions in each area of a business affect other areas and impact the success of the company as a whole,” Brown said. “We experienced conflicts in ideas and priorities within a management team and found solutions. We were able to see the importance of an overall company strategy and defined objectives for all members to be working towards. We formed a hard-working, dynamic leadership team with many talents. We are very pleased with the achievements of our virtual company, and hope we can use all that we learned through this experience to be successful in the business world.”

Mark D. Woodhull, instructor of business administration and the team’s faculty sponsor, said the competition is a business student’s culminating experience after four years of business studies.

“The corporate CAPSTONE simulation offered by Management Simulations Incorporated (MSI) provides our students with a challenging venue for exercising their business knowledge and skills and a global arena in which they can compete with over 1,600 other university academic and corporate executive teams,” Woodhull said. This is the third year Schreiner has competed.

Recall 2006 SFSA Second Annual Christmas GatheringOn December 7 the San Antonio Area Chapter held its 2nd Annual Christmas Gathering at the Fort Sam Houston Club. Forty-three people braved the elements and enjoyed a grand evening of informal fellowship and presentations by Lea Nye ’92, vice president of the Schreiner Former Students Association, Schreiner University athletic director Ron Macosko, and Schreiner president Dr. Tim Summerlin.

The scheduled appearance of the Schreiner Choir was prevented by the rain and ice, but the gathering enjoyed a Christmas carol or two.

In other chapter news: the presidents and leaders of other SFSA chapters would love to have gatherings in their areas this spring.

If you would like to support your area chapter, or if you would like to assist with the formation of a chapter for your area, please contact one of the chapter leaders.

Chapter contact information is available at: www.schreiner.edu/formerstudents/sfsa/events.html or by calling Allen Boatwright, Director of Alumni Relations at 830-792-7206, or email [email protected].

Members of the San Antonio Area Chapter of the Schreiner Former Students Association enjoy some holiday cheer during their 2nd Annual Christmas Gathering at Fort Sam Houston Club Dec. 7. About 43 members were able to enjoy the festivities in spite of the icy weather.

Donors have always played a vital role in helping Schreiner University to provide a first-rate education for our students. From Charles Schreiner’s donations of land and endowment in 1917 to establish Schreiner Institute, to the Cailloux family’s generosity that built our latest academic building, Kathleen Cox Cailloux Hall, the history of Schreiner University is a story of philanthropy and generous supporters. In these pages we salute you—you who supported the Hill Country College Fund, sponsored a student, provided funds for student scholarships, supported Campus Ministry or the Learning Support Services program, or made a donation to our comprehensive campaign building projects, or any of our many programs or projects on campus from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2005. Thank you!

Schreiner University does not discriminate in admissions, educational programs, extra-curricular programs or employment against any individual on the basis of that individual’s race, color, sex, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, veteran status or ethnic origin. Inquiries/complaints should be forwarded to the Director of Human Resources, phone 830-896-5411.

During February, Schreiner University students will be calling to simply say “thank you” to everyone who has donated to make Schreiner great! Students will also be calling those who have not yet had a chance to give to ask for financial support for Schreiner’s Annual Fund. Gifts to the Annual Fund provide scholarship assistance for students, money for campus improvements, funds to help Schreiner recruit the most talented faculty, and the support necessary to keep our library and technology up-to-date.

“I hope you enjoy speaking with our Schreiner students as much as their appreciate talking to you!” says Jennifer Farhoudi, assistant director of development and annual giving. “Our callers love to hear about your favorite Schreiner experiences and will be glad to tell you about upcoming events on campus.”

So talk to a Mountaineer and make their day.

Pick up the phone… it’s a Mountaineer calling!
