How toChoose a Garden Center

Although the perfect looking pictures can make your mouth water, not everyone wish-es to start their spring garden from seeds. There are many other options to consider when planning the garden of your dreams.

In many cases you will have more than one choice for a garden center in your area. Choosing the right one for you may be con-fusing.

Ask yourself what features are important to you. It is simple to become familiar with the industry as long as you pay attention to a few key things.

HOW LONG HAVE THEY BEEN IN BUSINESS?

The longer a garden center has been in busi-ness, the more likely they are to have great service and offer quality plants.

Even if the greenhouse or garden center has changed ownership, it is likely that there has been a continuation of business practices. While the length of time in business isn’t nec-essarily the only thing to be considered, it is a good indication of sound business practices.

Many times when a business is sold the origi-nal owners stay on to provide training to new employees and owners to help with a smooth transition. This process of a smooth transi-tion can often be a good indication of good management as well.

IS THE GARDEN CENTER LOCAL OR NATIONAL?

Sometimes this can be difficult to determine. In many cases, garden centers may belong to a franchise and get their plants from other ar-eas while having a local management team. This can make it more difficult to have control over the final product that you may buy.

A greenhouse that grows all of their own plants from seeds has full control over their inventory. The closer the plant is grown to where it will eventually be gardened, the bet-ter the end results will likely be.

It is important to understand that plants are shipped in very small containers for long dis-tances. This can cause the plants to be sub-ject to more plant diseases, most of which

won’t be apparent until the plant is already in your garden.

OPEN POLLINATED, GENETICALLY MODIFIED OR ORGANIC?

Anyone who has spent any time digging in the dirt knows the meaning of these buzz words. Recently they have made it to the top of all gardening organizations.

Open pollinated designates a seed or plant that will reproduce itself purely if seed is properly saved from the fruit of the plant. An organic seed or plant has been produced without artificial or chemical pesticides. Genetically modified plants are created by laboratory technology that manipulates the plant’s genes. For example, instead of mix-ing two different kinds of corn to create one that is more resistant to diseases, they may combine genes from corn and a totally un-related tomato plant. These modifications do not happen naturally in the breeding process.

People are very wary of genetically altered seeds and plants. The truth is that there are many advantages to this type of plant. On commercial farms, this type of plant can give distinct advantages over those that are not genetically modified. In a backyard garden however, this is usually not necessary.

When shopping at a garden center, you should know what types of plants are be-ing offered. Many will have identifying points listed on the tag. If not, you should check with the staff to get information. Generally, com-mercial crops are more likely to have genetic modification done on them.

There are many other points to consider that will help you make the right decision about a garden center or greenhouse. All else being equal, spend some time visiting all of the op-tions. You may find a combination from sev-eral provide you with the best results.

It’s important to feel free to shop around and compare prices. Customer service is also very important. Generally, gardeners are friendly and knowledgeable and always hap-py to give you pointers. You should find that the garden center you choose is informative and friendly.

As spring draws near, the birds start to come out of hiding and many people begin to turn their attention to gardening. Starting in January, mailboxes throughout America begin to be stuffed with seed catalogs.

Hartman’s Towne & Country Greenhouse dates back to the mid-1960s, when the

business started as a hobby greenhouse. This hobby soon attracted the interest of

otherswhowere interested in flower and vegetable transplants for their own gardens.

The good word apparently spread, and in 1985 Hartman’s built a facility at its

current location on Nagle Avenue and today has an immense 45,000 square feet of

greenhouse space.

Spring is prime time at the greenhouse, sporting a wide and ever-changing variety of

flowers and vegetables for yard and garden. Summer and fall bring customers looking

for perennials, mums, and ornamental kale; and the holidays burst into a colorful

CERTIFICATION

Every state has a different certification or licen-sure process for hearing aid dispensers. Your doctor or audiologist should be able to direct you to a qualified dispenser in your area, and you can also check with your state government to verify that the dispenser is certified to oper-ate in your state.

Keep in mind that certification is a minimum standard, though, and you’ll want to talk to your friends, family and neighbors to get ad-vice about which providers they’ve used and how happy they were with the experience. Just like hiring any professional, the more you know about their reputation, the better a decision you can make.

PRODUCT LINE

Most hearing aid dispensers offer products from several brands at a variety of price points. You’ll want to ask which brands the dispenser carries and what their prices range from.

With good quality hearing aids often costing several thousand dollars, you’ll want to make sure you have several to pick from that can meet your needs without wasting money on features or performance you don’t need.

PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE

Since most of us aren’t experts on hearing aids, you need to look for a dispenser who is. Not only should they have an understanding of the medical reasons behind hearing loss — since every hearing situation is different — but they should have in-depth knowledge of their hear-ing aid products.

Hearing aids can be complex devices, especially when you’re looking at high-end models that can be customized extensively to match your hearing needs. A good dispenser can take those technical terms and make them easy for you to understand.

TRIAL AND WARRANTY

Ask if the dispenser offers a trial period for their hearing aids. Some companies offer a 30-day

trial so you can make sure the product works exactly as you expect.

You should also ask about what kind of warranty the hearing aid comes with. Many hearing aids are available with coverage for loss or damage, almost like an insurance policy, which can be very important down the road. Make sure you understand what the warranty covers, how much it costs and whether there will be any fees if your hearing aid needs to be replaced or repaired during the warranty period.

FOLLOW-UP SERVICE

When you buy a hearing aid from a good dis-penser, one of the things you’re paying for is good service. And that includes service after the sale.

This is especially true when it comes time to have your hearing aid adjusted or repaired. It’s common for hearing aids to require several follow-up visits to make sure they are fitted and adjusted correctly for your ear, so you should look for a dispenser that is both technically pro-ficient and a good listener. They should be able to understand your hearing needs and make any changes necessary to fix any problems you find.

You should also ask about loaner devices if your hearing aid needs a repair. Most hearing aid dispensers will be able to do some repairs in-house quickly, but major repairs may require your hearing aid to be mailed off. This is when it’s good to know their policy about loaner de-vices.

In the end, if you shop carefully and investigate their reputation, you can find a hearing aid dis-penser that will help you find the right aid at the right price. And when you do, you’ll be much more likely to be happy with the results from your hearing aid.

Choosing the right hearing aid can change your life for the better, but the process actually starts with something more important: choosing the right hearing aid dis-penser. The dispenser, or the company that provides your hearing aid, plays a vital role in making sure you get the best results from it. They will not only help you pick the right device, but they’ll also help teach you how to properly use it. And a good dispenser will help you long after the sale, too. Here are some things to look for when choosing a hearing aid dispenser.

How toBuy a Diamond

How much should you spend? Choose a com-fortable amount that you know you can afford.

In the diamond world, the four Cs are known as cut, color, clarity and carat weight.

CUTCut truly is the craftsmanship applied when cut-ting the facets of the stone. A well cut diamond sparkles beautifully. Cut can also refer to the shape of the diamond. Several popular shapes are listed below.

• Round:Theclassic,traditionalcut.Themajor-ity of diamonds sold are round.

• Princess:Brilliant-styleshapewithsharp,uncut corners. Typically cut square, generally has 76 facets and has as much brilliance and fire as the round diamond.

• Emerald:Usuallyarectangularshape.Theflatplanes of the outside edges allow for a variety of side stone shapes.

• Pear:Abrilliantdiamondbasedupontheround brilliant diamond. A typical teardrop-shaped diamond will contain 58 facets.

• Radiant:astraight-edgedrectangularorsquare stone with cut corners, 62-70 facets.

• Marquise:Afootball-shapeddiamond.

• Oval:Averyromanticcut.

COLORThe color of a diamond has the second biggest impact on its price, after carat weight. Diamonds are graded on a scale of colors ranging from colorless to light yellow. The scale ranges from D-Z, with “D” considered colorless. Colorless dia-monds are typically the most valuable. Colored diamonds in natural fancy colors like pink, yellow, blue, chocolate, black and purple are becoming popular. White diamonds are the most popular.

CARATA quality 1 carat diamond can be just as impres-sive as a 2 carat diamond if the clarity of the stone is better. However the size of a diamond does have the biggest impact on its price. The metric carat, which equals 0.20 gram, is the stan-dard unit of weight for diamonds. A 0.5 carat is about 5.2 mm in diameter-width and 1 carat is about 6.5 mm in diameter width.

CLARITYMost diamonds have imperfections. Clarity re-fers to how clean or clear the diamond is . The clarityscalerangesfromFL-13,flawlesstoimper-fect.

GIA Diamond clarity scale

• FL-Flawless:Noimperfectionsinsideorout-side the stone under the loupe magnification of 10 power.

• IF-InternallyFlawless:Noinclusionsunderaloupe of 10 power magnification.

• VVS1,VVS2-VeryVerySlightlyImperfect:Smallinclusions which are very difficult to see under a loupe of 10 power magnification.

• VS1,VS2-VerySlightlyImperfect:Smallinclu-sion which are slightly difficult to see under a loupe with a 10 power magnification.

• SI1, SI2-Slightly Imperfect: Inclusions which are fairly easy to see under a loupe with a 10 power magnification, or visible to the naked eye.

• I1, I2, I3 - Imperfect: Inclusions that range from eye visible to very easily seen to the naked eye.

Before purchasing the perfect diamond, yourjeweler should explain the maintenance of the stone to you. Diamonds worn every day should be checked by the jeweler at least twice a year.

Another important aspect to consider is insur-ance. Many homeowners polices also cover diamonds. Insurance for your jewels should not be overlooked; your investment should be pro-tected.

According to local diamond buyers there are sev-eral things to be careful of when buying a dia-mond. Watch out for diamonds that have been enhanced, whether with color or clarity. Also beware of fake diamonds like CZs or Moissanite. Find a jeweler that you trust and that will provide you with a high quality diamond that meets your expectations.

The Gemological Institute of America is an inde-pendent grading laboratory for the diamond in-dustry. Search their Web site at www.gia.org for more information.

The sparkle, the shine - it just can’t be replaced by any other stone.

How toChoose the Right Landscaper

Landscapers and the landscaping companies they own or work for provide a wide variety of services for their clients, and finding one that of-fers what you want for your home — at the right price, of course — is essential.

How can you be sure you’re choosing the right landscaper?

KNOW WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR

When you start to think about hiring a landscap-er, look at your neighbors’ lawns and gardens and look through landscape and garden maga-zines. This will help you find ways to express how your lawn to look and to identify the types of plants, treesandflowersthatmightbestfityourlandscape.

IDENTIFY WHICH SERVICES YOU NEED

Make a list of your specific needs and decide which services you will require from the land-scaping company you hire. Most landscap-ing companies offer the following: weekly or monthly lawn and garden maintenance, weed control, tree pruning and shaping, garden instal-lations, inspection and maintenance of irrigation systems and possibly even the construction of retaining walls or other structures.

You may want a landscaper who will mow your lawn regularly but find that having someone whoprunesthetreesismorecritical.Besuretoidentify which services you need and which you want. Then you’ll be ready to begin searching for the right landscaper.

KNOW YOUR BUDGET

Cost is always a major consideration when hir-ing a landscaper, and the best way to stick to a budget is to set one.

Besureyouknowhowmuchyouarewillingtopay for the landscaping services you need and what you can afford and are willing to spend an-nually on your landscaping. This will help you to determine which services on the list you created are truly necessities.

In order to stick to your budget, you may need to make sacrifices. If you need to have a new landscaping wall built in order to protect your

home, you may need to hold off on the top-notch sprinkler system you want to install. If the irri-gation system is a must, you may need to limit the number of times you have your lawn mowed each month.

Don’t get discouraged, however, if your budget for landscaping looks a little tight. You’ll find that some landscapers charge less than you might expect for these types of projects in order to get your business.

GET REFERRALS

Word of mouth is a great form of advertising, and a good landscaper will come with excellent rec-ommendations.

If your neighbors have been using a service and you like what you see, ask them which company they are working with — and ask them about the pros and cons that they see with the services. If your friends or family use a landscaper, seek their advice as well. You may also want to do an online search for local landscaping companies.

Nomatterwhat, checktheBBBandtheInternetfor consumer reviews of the companies you find. If you see many negative reviews for one com-pany, it may be better to move to the next one on your list.

CONSIDER AVAILABILITY

One of the first questions that you should ask any landscaper you interview is when they will be able to complete your limited-time projects and how often they will be available for mainte-nance. If you want to be home when the land-scaper is working, be sure that they work in your area when you can be there.

You’ll also want to address other questions you have. For example, if your community has noise regulations, ask each landscape company what they will do to adhere to them.

IN SUMMARY

Finding the right landscaper for your needs takes a knowledge of landscaping techniques and con-fidence in the company you hire.

Know your needs, ask for referrals, and do your research as thoroughly as possible to make sure that you choose the right landscaper for your needs.

Are you looking to improve the appearance and value of your home? Choosing a high-quality landscaper may be the right option for you.

How toChoose a Retirement CommunityRetirement bringsmany desired lifestyle changes. Because of this, retirement communities are an option worth consideration.

Cost is important but what housing and services are provided for the cost – the value – must be taken into account. Among the many fea-tures which should be evaluated are the variety of floor plans andthe amenities that the community offers such as parking, services, dining, activities and location within the city.

Check to see that there is adequate parking and ask if inside parking is available. This is particularly im-portant in colder climates. The ma-jority of seniors who have families also require visitor parking which can become a prob-lem when space is inadequate.

REGULAR ACTIVITIES

The seniors of today are highly health conscious. They wish to re-main active after retirement with activities such as exercise classes and walking paths. An on-site fit-ness center is also important. It is essential to ensure that these fea-tures are present within the com-munity.

Other activities may include Wii bowling, chess, holiday events and arts and crafts. Participating in ac-tivities within the community can also improve the social life of the residents. Ask about entertainment and social events for residents.

You also want to see whether the

community provides residents with the opportunity to participate in activities off-site such as visiting museums and trips to the movie theater.

MEDICAL FACILITIES

Conduct research prior to choos-ing a facility so that you can deter-

mine where the clos-est hospitals, doctors, ambulance service and medical technicians are located. You should also choose a commu-nity which is close to your personal physi-cian.

DINING

There are many dif-ferent dining plans at retirement communi-

ties. Be sure to check if someorall meals are provided, how the din-ing program works and if residents are able to cook their own meals if desired.

CHURCHES, LIBRARIES AND SHOPPING

Seniors typically prefer to live in less congested, quiet areas for their retirement. Because of this, youshould check the amount of traffic in the area surrounding the com-munity.

You should also know where the libraries, churches, grocery stores and other shopping centers are located as well as the locations for public transportation. You also want to ask if the community pro-vides its own transportation for lo-cal trips.

How toChoose a Great Hair Salon

GET ADVICE

Word of mouth is a great way to find out about salons. However, one person’s great experience does not always translate into success for others. If you want to ask acquaintances for recommendations, the most important thing you can do is ask someone who has a hair type similar to yours. If you have coarse, curly hair, your straight-haired friend might have a differ-ent experience than you will. You want to make sure the stylist and salon you choose is able to deal with your particular hair type. Keep this in mind when asking for recommendations. You should ask not only for the name of the salon but also the stylist. In many cases it is the stylist that can make or break your salon experience. Inquire about the stylist’s personality. If you are the quiet type, you might not have the same rapport with an outgoing stylist as your talkative friend does. If you are conservative, you might not like what a more daring stylist does to your hair.

LOOK ONLINE

Look at the websites for the salons in question to gain insight into what type of place it is. If you are looking for a good budget cut, don’t worry if the site doesn’t have too many bells and whistles — or doesn’t have a website at all. This just means they keep costs down, which helps them offer services at lower prices. On the other hand, if you are looking for a high-end makeover, an impressive website could be a sign of an impressive experi-ence to come. This shows their attention to style as well as how modern they are.

MATCH YOUR LIFE

It is also important to choose a salon that

matches your lifestyle. If you like to get

trims on your lunch break, make sure

the salon is close to work. If you work

long hours, make sure they are open late.

If your hair is easy to cut but you have

trouble finding a great color, opt for a salon

that is known for its colorists. Remember

that salons excel in different areas and ev-

eryone’s needs are different. Ask yourself

what the most important criteria are for

choosing a salon and then proceed with

that in mind.

PRICE

One of the most important criteria in

choosing a salon for many people is price.

When a salon quotes a price for a haircut

for you, find out exactly what is included.

Even high-end salons sometimes charge

a separate fee for washing or blow drying.

Find out in advance to avoid unpleas-

ant surprises later. Also be sure that the

prices you see are applicable to your hair

type and length. Your appearance says a

lot about you. If you want to make a good

impression, choosing the right salon is

vital. It may take some trial and error; but,

once you find the right salon for you, end-

less great hair days are within your reach.

If you find yourself having frequent bad hair days, it might be time to find a new salon. It doesn’t matter what kind of hair you were born with, the right saloncanmakeyoulookamazing.Unfortunately, notallsalonsofferthesame quality. If you find yourself jumping from salon to salon without ever finding a good fit for you, you might need some guidance in making a good selection. While many people believe price is an indication of salon quality, this is not necessarily true. Here is some honest advice for choosing a great salon.

How toChoose a Pharmacist

Pharmacists are your first stop for drug in-formation and for learning how a medica-tion may affect you. And finding a pharma-cist and pharmacy who meet your needs will go a long way toward helping you re-gain or maintain your health.

So what kinds of factors should you con-sider in choosing a pharmacist?

Accessibility

Studies have shown that pharmacists are the most accessible health care profes-sional. You should ex-pect to be able to talk to a pharmacist every time you pick up a prescrip-tion. Since questions about your health and medications can come up any time, make sure you choose a pharmacy that has readily accessible pharmacists who have the time to talk to you. If a staff member tosses a bag at you and asks “any questions” while the pharmacist is no where to be seen, you may want to consider changing phar-macies. Also, if you can only access a pharmacist through a 1-800 number or computer monitor, you may want to consider another option.

Services Offered

Are you interested in getting your blood pressure checked? How about your blood sugar or cholesterol? Some pharmacies of-fer these and other services and some do not. Some pharmacies offer an auto-refill program, which means you can ask them to refill your medications automatically without the hassle of calling in each time. This can also prevent you from needing to call your doctor’s office for a renewal of your prescription since the pharmacy al-ready did this for you. Other services that

some pharmacies offer are home delivery and bubble packaging of your medications. Ask your pharmacist if these services are offered.

Community Involvement

Does your pharmacist live in your home-town and does he or she give back to the community? Is the pharmacy you use lo-cally owned or is it part of a chain or out-of-state mail order facility? Supporting a locally owned business keeps the money you spend in the community where you

live. That money helps support local schools and other local businesses that help make your com-munity thrive.

In order to minimize con-fusion and maximize your level of health, it’s best to keep all of your prescrip-tions with one trusted pharmacy. Spreading out your medications with dif-ferent pharmacies means that no one pharmacist knows exactly what drugs you’re taking; this situ-ation is ripe for creating inadvertent drug inter-

actions or overdoses. Keeping all your in-formation with one pharmacy means that the pharmacist can help monitor your drug regimen to avoid any adverse effects.

Of course, trusting your pharmacist means that you feel comfortable asking him/her questions about your medications and prescriptions. Look for someone who wel-comes questions and answers you com-pletely and patiently.

Take your time to find a pharmacist who you can trust with all of your prescription and medication needs. Given how much you’ll rely on and interact with the pharma-cist over the years to come, it’s as impor-tant as finding a good doctor.

Most people understand the need to choose carefully when selecting a new physician, but you shouldn’t overlook the importance of choosing the right pharmacist as well.

How toChoose a Pet Groomer

Grooming is one of the responsibilities of owning a pet. All pets need baths and nail trims to stay happy and healthy. Certain breeds need regular haircuts and special treatments to stay looking spectacular!

A skilled groomer, also called a pet styl-ist, can bring out the best in your pet. Groomers work in pet salons, pet stores, and veterinary offices. Some work out of their homes.

To find a groomer, you might search in the newspaper, yellow pages, or online. You can also ask your friends to recommend agroomer.Beforemakingagroomingap-pointment, visit the groomer’s place of business so you can meet them and see first-hand how they operate. This is the best way to determine if a groomer will be a good match for you and your pet.

Here are five things to consider when choosing a groomer.

1: CARING AND COMPETENT STAFF

Your primary concern should be how the grooming staff will handle and treat your dog or cat while in the salon – particularly if your pet is sensitive, shy, or has special needs. Observe how employees interact with the animals under their care. Kindness and patience goes a long way to help re-duce any stress your pet might feel.

Trust your instincts. You should feel com-fortable asking about grooming services and explaining exactly how you want your pet to look so that there are no surprises.

2: CLEAN AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT

Look around the facility or ask for a tour. The grooming area should look and smell clean. Pay attention to where the dogs and cats are kept while waiting for your return. Besure yourpetwill be in a safe, secureenvironment.

Ask questions. Will your pet be caged, and

if so, for how long? Will your pet come in contact with other animals? What will hap-pen if the groomer gets called away for an emergency?

3: VARIETY OF GROOMING SERVICES

Some groomers prefer to work on certain breeds. Ask if the groomer has any restric-tions or will accept dogs of any size and breed. Also ask if they groom cats or other small companion animals.

The simplest grooming typically includes brushing, shampoo, blow-dry, and nail trimming. A full service groom might also include trimming the fur on paws, legs, or ears. Certain breeds require hand stripping orclippingovertheirentirebody.Besureyou understand what is included in any grooming package you select.

Some businesses offer additional services like brushing, de-matting, flea treatments, and anal gland expression. A few offer a premium pet pampering services such as nail polishing, ear and teeth cleaning, fa-cials, and therapeutic massage.

4: CONVENIENCE

Look for a business located in an area that is convenient for you. Check the hours of operation. It should be easy for you to schedule an appointment, and there should be parking available when you drop off and pick up your pet.

5: COST

Grooming options range from self-serve pet washes around $10-15 dollars to full service professional grooming that can cost $45-$75 and up depending on the size, breed and work involved in the service. If you’re not sure what services your pet needs, talk to the groomer or staff. They can explain what is best for your pet and maintenance services that can help keep grooming cost down.

If you like to hug your dog or cat – and who doesn’t – you know that snuggle time is more enjoyable when your pet is clean and groomed.

Howe Builders, Inc.

WINNER2012–2014

There are many key factors in choosing the right builder. Start by asking friends and neigh-bors for recommendations. When it comes to construction, word-of-mouth is a great way to find out information. When asking someone about the experi-ence they had with a building project it is important to be specific.

Things to ask about include if they started on time, had any delays (other than weath-er), kept costs within bud-get and finished when they were supposed to finish. It is also important to ask if the crews were professional and cleaned up once the project was completed.

Ask if repairs had to be made after the project was done. Some minor issues are expected, but if there are repairs or minor touch-ups that had to be done, ask if they were handled quickly. You want to make sure they have good follow-up service. This is a question you want to ask to past customers, who are likely to be more honest about it.

It’s a good idea to drive by homes the builder has worked on in the past. You might want to do so on the weekend, that way you can talk to the home owners and ask questions. Take a notebook with you with questions you want to ask and write down their answers. It will be easier to review your notes later and make a final decision. Don’t be afraid to ask any ques-tions. Even questions that seem insignificant can yield important answers.

Ask the builder you are considering for refer-ences. When you contact the references ask the same questions. It is also a good idea to contactyourlocalBetterBusinessBureauandHome Builder’s Association. Once you havecompiled a list of three of four possible build-

ers, set up meetings with them.

It is recommended to meet at the site of the building to give them an idea of what is required and to bring blueprints. Ask each builder to bring photos of work they have done. Prepare a list of questions. Ask how much of the work is done by their own crews and how much, if any, is sub-contracted.

Most builders will frame a house. Anything be-yond that point is usu-ally performed by other companies. Ask ahead

of time how far they will go with the project and who will do the excavating, siding, roof-ing, insulation, cooling and heating, etc. Some builders will subcontract out the work for the entire project, which means dealing with many other companies. If they do this, ask which companies they work with. Ask about the quality of materials used and for an esti-mate of the total cost involved.

Ask if the builder will oversee the work on a daily basis or if they have a project manager who will do this. This applies even if the work is subcontracted. You want to make sure that any possible problem is noticed and addressed quickly. If a problem is left unde-tected until the project is complete it could be very costly to correct it. It is generally much easier to catch a problem early on and cor-rect it while the initial building process is still going on.

Make sure the builder is open to questions and is good with communication. While choosing the right builder may take some time, in the end the efforts of being selective will result in satisfaction with the finished project.

Buildinganewhomecanbeadauntingtask.Anumberofissuescan come up during the process, which is why choosing the right builder is essential to having a finished home that you can truly appreciate with a minimum of unexpected expenses and construction headaches along the way.

How toChoose a HVAC Company

5001890249SCHAUSROOFINGANDM

HOW TO3 x 9.75

The key to getting great heating and air con-ditioning service is finding the rightHVACcompany.It’sbeensaidthatanHVACcom-pany is like a spouse. Good ones are help-ful, reliable and there for you in your times of need, whereas bad ones will cost you a lot of money, cause you many headaches and put you in uncomfortable situations.

Word of mouth will provide the best rec-ommendationsforanHVACcompany.Askyour family and friends who they’ve had good experience using. When you hear the same name more than once, that’s a good sign.

Make sure that you let the company know that they were recommended by people close to you. This will let them know that they need to do a good job or other customers will hear about it and maybe consider taking their business to another company.

When researching any sort of company, you’ll want to check with the Better Business Bureau. For an HVAC company, check with your state’s board of contractors. You can also check the local mechanical inspection of-fice to be really thorough.

You want to make sure any company you useisreputable.Unfortunatelytodaymanyare not as reputable as we’d like to think.

You’ll also want to know if the company has insurance and is bonded for accidents that are likely to happen occasionally. This can save you from having to file a claim on your homeowners insurance should any mis-haps take place that cause damage to your property during the installation.

HVAC companies that are quality busi-nesses will usually have a membership in a reputable professional organization. Some well-known organizations include

the American Society of Mechanical Engi-neers, the Air-Conditioning and Refrigera-tion Institute, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers.Belongingtooneoftheseorga-nizations shows that the company you’re considering knows their business.

Make sure to check for proper permits. An HVACcompanygettingtheproperpermitscan save a homeowner many headaches.

Load calculation is anoth-er thing that will save you from plenty of problems in the future.

It’s a good idea to have a load calculation per-formed before install-ing a new system in any building. The company that you select should be willing to do so. There areHVACcompaniesthatwill use a general rule of thumb to size the neces-sary equipment instead of double checking, and some companies will just install the same size of equipment as equipment that is being replaced.

These methods can cause unnecessary problems for you. Many times you don’t know if a load cal-culation was done when

the first system was installed and changes in the building have probably taken place over the years.

A system that’s too big will be inefficient and cause big problems. A system that’s too small won’t be able to heat or cool the larger area. When you have the system that is installed to fit the needs of the building, you will save money and be much happier.

Following this advice will help you find an HVAC company that will help save yousome money and leave you satisfied with their work.

In the summer, there seems to be nothing more important than good air conditioning. In the winter, nothing is more important than an effective heating system.

Advancements in technology have made the implants more authentic in appearance and given them the ability to fit within the structure of any human jaw. Although they are more costly than some other options, they are worth considering if you want an attractive smile and increased self confi-dence.

Properly done, they offer the look and feel of natural teeth and, because they fuse to your jaw bone, offer more stability than other alternatives. This integration into your jaw bone helps the implanted teeth feel more natural and very comfortable.

Additionally, implants can help you keep the teeth you already have, as they do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. And, many people who suffer with ill-fitting dentures should consider implants. The majority of patients who make the switch from denture to implants report that the implants are far more comfortable.

The first step in determining whether im-plants are for you is to make an appoint-ment with your dentist to have a complete dental health assessment.

It needs to be determined that the patient has healthy gums and bone tissue. This will insure that the dental implants can be properly secured to the jaw bone. They will also rule out health conditions that may make you a poor candidate for dental im-plants.

Your appointment should be with a den-tal specialist such as an oral surgeon, a prosthodontist or periodontist. You want to make sure the dentist has the specialized training and experience to do the implants.

The appointment should include a full den-tal exam. The office will take a complete medical and dental history. They will take X-rays and maybe a CT scan to determine if you have adequate bone density and to determine the shape of your jaw.

At the end of the exam, the office will dis-cuss your options and explain the implant

procedure. At that time they should be able to tell you if you are a good candidate for dental implants.

If it is determined that there is a shortage of gum tissue in the mouth, the dentist may be able to perform dental bone grafts that can strengthen the area in which the den-tal implant will be placed. It is preferred, though, that the patient’s dental bone and gum tissue be healthy before beginning the dental implant procedure.

Secondly, any smokers or individuals who use tobacco products will be asked to quit using tobacco products before they com-mence the implant procedure. Smokers are not generally good candidates for den-tal implants because their bone and gum tissue is generally not as strong as that of non-smokers.

Halting all tobacco use is generally effec-tive in allowing the body to begin naturally strengthening the dental bone and gum tis-sue of previous smokers.

Generally if you can answer yes to the fol-lowing questions, you are a good dental implant candidate:

1. Are you in generally good health?

2. Do you have healthy gums and enough healthy bone to anchor the implants in the jaw?

3. Are you committed to being diligent about the care of your implanted teeth and general dental health including regular brushingandflossing?

4. Will you maintain a schedule of regular dental check-ups?

Remember, dental implants are expensive, so you should check with your insurance agent to see if they are covered before pro-ceeding. However, dental implants can be a great confidence booster as you regain a beautiful, natural smile.

It may be the best thing you do for your overall physical and mental well-being.

How toChoose a Cremation Service

Cremation serves as a dignified and powerful method of commemorating a life worth celebrating, an important first step in the healing process.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CREMATION Memorialization Options and Cremation

Families are realizing there are many optionsandmuchflexibilitysurround-ing planning for cre-mation. Some families choose to have a view-ing or a funeral service before the cremation. Others choose a me-morial service at the time of cremation or afterwards with the urn present, or even a committal service at the final disposition of cremated remains. Of-ten, funeral or memori-al services can be held in a place of worship, a funeral home, a crematory chapel or even at a place of special significance to your loved one. Likewise, cremated remains can be in-terred in a cemetery plot or in a crema-tion niche in a columbarium. They can also be retained by a family member or scattered at a meaningful location that can be appreciated by future genera-tions. (It is always advisable to check for local regulations regarding scatter-ing in a public place.) Cremation is just one step in the commemorative pro-cess – an important step in preparing the remains for memorialization. How

you can continue with the memorial-ization process is limited only by your imagination.

OTHER CREMATION ISSUES Cost of Cremation Services

The cost of cremation varies depend-ing on the services and products se-lected by the family. Funeral homes should provide in itemized list includ-

ing the costs of these services and products they offer. Making fu-neral plans in advance is helpful because, in addition to easing the planning process and allowing family mem-bers to know your wishes, planning ahead gives you a sense of the actual costs asso-ciated with a specific type of service.

ANOTHER FORM OF REMEMBRANCE

Cremation does not – and should not – take the place of a funeral service. Like burial, it is merely another form of disposition. However, by considering all your funeral options, you’ll find the cremation can be an important part of the commemoration process. It helps loved ones to share grief, celebrate the life of the person who died and find healing in remembrance.

New Tradition in Funeral Service

Cremation is becoming a popular part of the American funeral. While so many people are seeking more options for meaningful funeral services, they’ve realized what cremation can offer, especially within the context of a ceremony.

Cremation serves as a dignified and powerful method of commemorating a life worth celebrating, an important first step in the healing process.

How toPrepare your Estate Plan

Regardless of your circumstances, whether you are rich or poor, old or young, you really should create a plan for the handling of your property and other assets in the event you die unexpectedly.

Not having a sound estate plan can result in legal difficulties, great inconvenience, unnecessary tax-ation and family strife. Taking the time to consult with estate planning professionals can have a sig-nificant impact on your lasting legacy.

The best estate plans are those crafted with the as-sistance of an experienced lawyer who can create documents written with your specific circumstanc-es in mind. Candid information about personalities, the size of your estate, and your goals are vital to a sound estate plan.

DOES YOUR ESTATE REQUIRE COURT SUPERVISION?A Will subjects your estate to the probate process. Probate is the court-supervised process of trans-ferring assets from a deceased person. Reasons for court supervision may be ill feelings among those who are left behind, assets that are difficult to value, or taxes or creditors that need to be paid, just to name a few. When you think about whether your estate requires court supervision, you must also think about the future. If your children get along now, are you sure that will always be the case?

In cases where it is needed, the protection of the ProbateCourt isvaluable. But inmany instances, such as that of a close family, or of a surviving spouse who is the sole heir, often unnecessary and burdensome.

There are alternatives to probate, which when used in the right circumstances can be faster, cheaper, and more user-friendly. Among them are:

Joint tenancy. This passes the property by the des-ignation on the title to the joint owner.

Transfers on Death or Payable on Death designa-tions allow designation of a successor on the title ofrealestateoraccounts.Useofthesemethods, while simple, can unintentionally alter a person’s wishes. If you have one child, and two step-chil-dren by a later marriage, a well-meaning bank agent or financial manager can designate a trans-fer on death to your child when you meant to leave your estate to all three children.

Trusts. While most often used to minimize estate taxes , or to provide for management by skilled money managers, the trust can, and is, often used to avoid the probate court. A trust can give you all of the income, as much of the principal as you desire, and can be revoked. What makes it some-what cumbersome is 1) its up-front cost, and 2)

the transfer of all of your property into the trust. All property, including property acquired after the trust is in operation, must be titled in the trust. You must be ever-vigilant to insure that everything is owned by the trust.

WISCONSIN HAS A BETTER WAY! THE “WASHINGTON WILL”The Washington Will, first developed in the State of Washington, is in fact a statutory agreement that simply avoids probate. Nothing has to be trans-ferred-all assets are covered. If you have a Will that accomplishes everything you want, you can devel-op a Washington Will that attaches to your Will to transfer the property, but without the supervision of the probate court. It is inexpensive to draft, and takes no vigilance to ensure that all is covered as does a trust.

ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS OF GOOD ESTATE PLANNINGEvery adult should have a Will, regardless of age, but that only represents one piece of a solid, com-prehensive estate plan. A Health Care Attorney appoints a trusted person with making health care decisions for you if you are incapacitated. A Finan-cial Power of Attorney does the same for making financial decisions for you if you are unable. A Dec-laration to Physicians (Wisconsin’s “Living Will”) directs your doctors if the Health Care Attorney is unavailable.

COMMUNICATION IS KEYThink and discuss with your spouse and/or per-haps with your family, the effect that an unexpect-ed inheritance may have. A windfall of the money that you have saved for your safety and the safety of your children may have exactly the opposite ef-fect that you intend. Too much money at a young age can ruin a child’s life. Regret over a squandered inherence is all too common.

Finally, an important part of an estate plan is com-municating with your family about what they can expect to receive as part of the estate. You should be frank with them and, while you don’t necessar-ily have to go into every detail, they shouldn’t be too surprised by the size and nature of the inheri-tance they receive after your death. Many estate disputes and heartache can be avoided by simply engaging in open communication. This is another area in which a good estate planner can be help-ful. Estate planning is their professional focus, and that includes the complicated family dynamics and concerns that typically accompany the process. With the right estate plan and experienced profes-sionals to help, your estate can be a blessing that your heirs will treasure for the rest of their lives.

It is a common misconception that only wealthy people need to worry about estate planning. However, this is most definitely not the case.
