Our university continues to grow and improve as we embark on a new chapter with a promising future ahead. As we turn the page on the prosperous fourteen-year presidency of President Shalala, we should take this opportunity to reflect back over the history of the University of Miami and our time here. Since the beginning, it has been the role and the honor of the Iron Arrow Society to uphold the history and traditions of our prestigious university. Thank you for continually representing the Tribe and University in your leadership, scholarship, character, humility, and love of alma mater. The Tribe must continue this responsibility as we welcome our University’s sixth president Dr. Julio Frenk. The future of our University of Miami looks promising. We remain ranked among the top 50 universities in the country at 48 th . We have successfully completed the Momentum 2 campaign, a year ahead of schedule. We thank those who donated and encourage all to continue to support our university. This past semester, we welcomed the Spring 2015 tapping class. The week of initiation, Iron Arrow hosted the successful History and Traditions lecture series "My U: The Impact My Alma Mater Had on Me" with a panel of four Iron Arrow members, open to both Iron Arrow members and nonmembers. This year, we look forward to continued improvement and growth as an organization. We want to ensure continued nomination of those that exemplify the five qualities of Iron Arrow, fair selections, increased member involvement, and promote the initiation of tappees that can in turn provide strong footings for future ocers and Tribe members to continue the integrity of Iron Arrow. We invite the Tribe members and their families to the University’s annual Homecoming events the weekend of November 6-8, 2015. This year’s Homecoming festivities include the traditional favorites, such as the parade, boat burning with fireworks, and Alumni Avenue. The Alumni Homecoming Weekend theme will be Carni Gras, modeled after the tradition from 1951-1999 including rides, food stands, and booths. Make sure and plan ahead so that you can join other Tribe members as Iron Arrow leads the Homecoming Parade on Friday. Anna M. Bona - Chief Phillip “Zhen” Chan - Son of Chief

Jake J. Krupa - Medicine Man

The tribe thanks Anna, Phillip and Jake for their leadership and service as they take the reins to help write the latest exciting chapter in the history and tradition of the tribe and the University.

Chief Anna Bona BS ’12 MD, ’16 was an outstanding student athlete who ran track and cross country for the U during her undergraduate years, while majoring in Biochemistry from which she graduated magna cum laude prior to her studies at the UM Miller of School of Medicine. Anna was on the founding board and leader of Camp Kesem, a unique summer program for children whose parents have or had cancer. As a medical student Anna’s service commitments include serving as Academic Societies Executive Events director, project manager for the DOCS 5K run, president of the Medical Humanities interest group,

assistant editor of the Synapse yearbook, co-chair of the student government Paff Teaching Awards committee, executive board member of the UM student chapter of the American Medical Association, president of the Beats per Minute dance team, among many other projects and research activities. In April she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society at Miller, an honor which recognizes students, residents and faculty who ‘embody the qualities of integrity, excellence, altruism, respect and empathy and who serve as role models, leaders and advocates for humanism in medicine’.

Son of Chief Phillip Chan BS ’15, MD ’19 will also be matriculating this fall at the Miller School after compiling a stellar record as an undergraduate. A Foote Fellow and PRISM mentor, Phillip’s wide ranging interests led him to major in Neuroscience and Criminology with a minor in Chemistry. He was also deeply committed to service as an undergraduate, including work with Camp Kesem as well as Special Olympics and Alternative Spring Break projects with the homeless and developmentally disabled populations. In addition to undergraduate research, Phillip was active in many organizations including the Federacion de Estudiantes

Cubano (FEC), UM Orientation and Great Start and Phi Delta Epsilon International Medical Fraternity.

Medicine Man Jake Krupa BSBA ’12, MAcc ’12, PhD ’19 is not only a returning student but a veteran Iron Arrow officer, having served as Chief in 2011-12. Jake was a dedicated undergraduate leader who was a Resident Assistant, as well as Student Government Treasurer, Programming Chair of the Association of Greek Letter Organizations (AGLO), IMPACT program coordinator and facilitator and a member of the executive board for Greek Week. After his graduation with bachelor and master’s degrees in Accounting, Jake joined the prestigious firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as an assurance associate where he performed year-end

audits and reviews across multiple engagements, specializing in private equity and hedge fund clients. In Spring 2015, after being recruited by the Accounting Department for their doctoral program, Jake returned to begin his studies as a Ph.D. student.

Iron Arrow Honor SocietyFall 2015 Luncheon Speaker: Jonathan Vilma

A leader on the field and in the locker room, tireless in preparation and fierce while patrolling the middle, Vilma has proven to be everything the New Orleans Saints had hoped for since acquiring him in 2008. Vilma has been the club’s leading tackler the past three seasons, earning a reputation as one of the NFL’s top linebackers. In the past two seasons, Vilma has been voted by his teammates as a defensive team captain and by opposing players, coaches and fans as a Pro Bowl selection. The University of Miami product enjoyed another standout campaign in 2010, recording 131 tackles, a career-high four sacks, one interception, four pass defenses, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery to lead a defense that finished ranked fourth in yardage and seventh in points per game. Vilma arrived in New Orleans after a four-year stint with the New York Jets, where after being selected 12th overall in 2004, he earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. Through seven seasons, Vilma has enjoyed impressive results, recording 872 tackles (583 solo), 11 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles, seven recoveries and 9.5 sacks, starting 100 of 102 career games.

Jonathan Vilma’s parents emigrated to the United States from Haiti in the 1970’s to make a better life for their family. Three decades later, they got a chance to see their son succeed on the biggest sports stage in the world, as a Super Bowl champion. “It’s a surreal feeling to walk off the field of your last game as a winner,” Vilma says. “Usually, when you end the season with a win, it means you didn’t make the playoffs. But to win the last game, to be a champion, there is nothing else like it. But the emotional pinnacle of Vilma’s career was cooled by what was happening in his parents’ homeland. Just as the playoffs began to unfold, a devastating earthquake ravaged Haiti—a country already beset by issues of poverty and domestic strife. “I was very fortunate,” Vilma says. “Within a day, I had heard that all of my relatives were okay. My aunt was alive and well. I know most people were not as lucky.” Over 150,000 people are believed to have died as a result of the earthquake, with countless others left homeless. Once the NFL shifted into gear and began fundraising to support the relief effort, Vilma made himself available to do any public service announcement he could to help. But he knew that PSA’s weren’t enough. He also produced and sold a t-shirt to benefit the efforts. In late 2010, Vilma launched the Jonathan Vilma Foundation to help raise funds to build a school in Haiti. He was named the 2010 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year for the New Orleans Saints.

In addition to charity, Vilma has a passion for education and hosts a financial conference for NFL players called “Jonathan Vilma’s Financial 51” to help players manage their money. In 2011, he was named Celebrity Ambassador for Operation HOPE’s Five Million Kids Initiative where he will lend his celebrity and philanthropic voice to promote the importance of education for inner-city youth.

Vilma was also named a Board Member of the National Football Foundation's “Play It Smart” program, an educational program designed to use football as a vehicle to foster the academic, personal and career development of at-risk student-athletes. The former Hurricane has given talks to schools about success on the field and in the classroom, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Vilma proudly represented the Miami-Dade County Community Foundation and Jonathan Vilma Charitable Fund on an episode of Wheel of Fortune, which aired on Sept. 6, 2006.

Jonathan was tapped and initiated into Iron Arrow in Spring 2004 and is currently the Brother Jimmy’s BBQ Master Franchise Holder for South Florida.
