  • WELCOME LETTER

Dear Deaf Women of Color Participants: Welcome to Gallaudet University! We are delighted to be the host site for the 10th Anniversary Deaf Women of Color (DWC) Conference. This unique conference will explore the resources of education through our workshops and activities, and through the advocacy of the DWC. Our anniversary conference's theme is: Todays Vision: Tomorrows Reality, which reflects our own vision of the reality we hope to develop with your help and support. Your participation in the conference means that your new future, with our support, is waiting for you.

We would like to thank all the participants and allies who are traveling to help us celebrate our 10th Anniversary. Highlights of this two-day conference include hands-on activities, workshops, keynote speakers, exhibit booths, meals, opening reception, Deaf Women's Network, and a gala . The Rosa Lee Show will also be shown. The funds will be directed to scholarships for underserved undergraduate and graduate deaf women of color.

Furthermore, this conference offers huge economical and educational benefits to Deaf women, helping them to share their knowledge and promote personal empowerment in their communities.

Please visit our website, www.deafwomenofcolor.com for further information on the DWC HerStory.

Come and support us by participating in this event. Together, we can share experiences and empower diverse Deaf! We are looking forward to this productive conference. Sincerely,

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. ~ Margaret Mead

  • Dr. Carla Garca-Fernndez

    Reaching out for Multiple Consciousness

Carla Garca-Fernndez discusses her childhood experience struggling with her fragmented identities. Through exploration of our backgrounds, we will attempt to broaden our multiple consciousness and understand how the past contributes to our ways of knowing today and nurturing of ourselves tomorrow.

Dr. Carla Garca-Fernndez is a passionate community activist with an aim to educate, learn and grow with Deaf-Latinas/os, other Deaf People of Color and marginalized groups through dialogue and collaborative research on multiple intersectional identities and social justice. Her research interests center around racial and cultural identities, social justiceparticularly in education, critical race studies, Deaf-Latina/os critical studies, and multilingual/multicultural education. Her professional careers led her to realize the importance of embracing multiple identities and motivated her to incorporate the intersectionality framework into her research. Carla, born in Belen, New Mexico, holds a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction: Cultural Studies in Education from the University of Texas at Austin, an MA in Language, Reading and Culture: Bilingual and Multicultural Education from the University of Arizona, and a BS in Home Economics: Child Development from Gallaudet University.

Carla Garca-Fernndez, fourth of eight children, grew up in her native state of New Mexico. At the age of 18 months, she enrolled in the New Mexico School for the Deaf with her older brother, Tim. This was the first step in her educational career which culminated in the completion of her PhD earlier this year. Carla credits her parents, Charles and Alice Garcia with instilling the value of education which has directed her steps and informed both her life and career.

    Exploring True Spirituality

This workshop presents a thought-provoking opportunity to explore what true spirituality is about, and how giving ourselves to that truthfully benefits us more than we think. Authentic teachings that all Spiritual Masters have shared since ancient times will be looked at and considered for their great meaning and relevance to our daily lives. We will have an open, welcoming dialogue that may shed light on some of the questions you have in mind. With increased clarity and a new outlook on life, we may begin taking a closer look at the life that we are living, so that we can make adjustments and have what we have always wantedjoy and freedom.

  • Welcome to My Personal Page

Thank you for SUPPORTING me in this cause! I am so thrilled that people continue to donating me for the best cause,AIDS/LifeCycle. I see my donations are over $1000, AWESOME. However I still needto meet my goal of $4000 before APRIL 1st.

The 545-mile ride from San Francisco to Los Angels is a real challenge for everyone whoparticipates like me. I look forward to riding my own road cycling for a week of May 31st to June6th. There will be an exciting moment for me that I joined in with the Eggers Family!

See a picture of me above...I have been training hard to prepare for the biggest event with AIDS.Monetary is to help more researchers, to get more medicines for patients, to assist more volunteerswho help us as participants, over 2 thousands of people, and more...

Please fill out in the form of a tax-deductible dontation to sponsor me for AIDS/LifeCycle.Any donation you give is so AWESOME!

Again the fund is for AIDS. That's why I want to contribute my value time and support it all the way.

Please check my FaceBook account, FB. If you don't have FB account, please let me know so I cansend you some pictures via an email account.

Thank you for your great consideration,

    Sandy McLennon
