Second, thank you to all of you who voted. � is year’s BOB is a record breaker for Colo-rado Community Media. We exceeded our previous vote count by 150,000, with more than 250,000 votes. Jake’s Toy Box, winner of this year’s Best

Retail Kid and Toy Store, is an outlet for

every form of children’s play. A creative toy

store, Jake’s specializes in able play, selling

toys that don’t have a screen or those one

may need to unplug.

“We want to be that reason to make the

drive again,” said owner Dan Driver.

Committed to serving their community,

Driver said their success is because of the

store’s hardworking and passionate team.

“All of our team members – we’re blessed

needs resource with a partnership with a

company called Lekotek.”

Formerly Arvada’s Ages and Stages Toy

Box, the Drivers purchased the toy store

in memory of their son, Jake, who passed

away following an epileptic seizure at age 4.

From stu� ed animals to puzzles and every-

thing in between, Jake’s carries a variety of

toys to help encourage wholesome play.

Ooey Gooey Bakery started as a way to in-dulge a family’s sweet tooth and help others. Four years later, it has become a booming business.

Castle Rock residents Matthew and Cheryl Altman and their three children — ages 13, 11 and 5 — run the family sweetery, catering events, delivering and recently adding a food truck to reach new customers.

“We originally got started just helping out at church doing dessert with the pastors,” Cheryl said. “� e response was so over-whelmingly positive, we just decided to go ahead and do a business.”

� e family spent a lot of time “playing around with sugar,” Cheryl said, creating their own cupcakes, cake pops, whoopee pies, frosting, candy and fudge. Experts agree they’ve � gured it out.

“We’ve won � rst, second and third place at the Broadmoor (Hotel’s annual) Holiday Chocolate Festival,” she said.

� at’s no easy task. � e competition draws about 80 chocolatiers.

But the awards aren’t what make this busi-ness tick.

“A big piece of who we are as a family and business is our relationship with the com-munity and how we give back,” Cheryl said. “We haven’t spent a whole lot on advertising; a lot of it is word of mouth through fundrais-ers and community events we’re involved in. Every year, business has almost doubled.

“It’s still fun. But it’s de� nitely more of a business than ‘Hey, let’s play with sugar’.”

� e 1961 ice cream truck Ooey Gooey converted into its food truck last fall has expanded its reach even further.

Because it’s a family business, “Our biggest challenge is how to balance,” Cheryl said. “But I love being able to teach my kids cus-tomer service and having pride in something they do themselves.”

Castle Rock Foot and Ankle Care has been taking care of patients in the Castle Rock community since the business was founded in 1998 by Dr. Jeannie O’Rourke.

Since then, they have been proving the community with foot care, ranging from medical necessity to athletic injury.

“We are a very friendly o� ce and extremely accommodating,” said Kelly Marsh, o� ce manager and marketing director. “We never want people to wait too long. So, we’ll always manage to � t patients in.”

� ey were originally located on the south side of Castle Rock behind Safeway.

In 2002, she moved up to 755 South Perry St. across from the Big O Tires. In 2010, Dr. Jessica Herzong was brought in as another pro-vider. She ultimately bought the practice in 2011.

In November of 2014, the practice moved to its current location on the campus of Castle Rock Adventist Hospital in the Meadows.

“We love it out here,” Marsh said. “We � nd that it’s convenient for a lot of patients to come to this area. Not only that, but a lot of their other doctors are in this building.”

Since 1996, the Minarick and Breeding families have been serv-ing up steaks and drinks to hungry patrons in the area at Duke’s Steakhouse.

Four years ago, Duke’s moved from its old location just south of Castle Rock to Castle Pines.

“� e community here has been so supportive, the people are wonderful,” said Mary Breeding, one of the owners. “Our familiar clientele that we had for 14 years in Castle Rock have found there way up here as well, so you put the two together and it’s been a great move.”

Along with manager and co-owner Neil Minarick, Duke’s tries to foster a family atmosphere that produces quality service and food.

In addition to their dining room, which is open on Sunday for brunch and o� ers a large � replace to keep patrons warm in the winter, Duke’s also has its own sports tavern area with TVs and 21 beers on tap.

So, what keeps bringing customers back to Duke’s?

“It’s a family owned restaurant. � at’s a big deal to us,” Breeding said. “We have great steaks and prime rib, a great group of people working here. I just hope people like us.”

Does watching kids � ying o� diving boards into a swimming pool make you feel nostalgic?

� ere’s a reason for that, says Jamie DeBartolomeis, spokeswoman for South Suburban Parks and Recreation. Most outdoor pools today are built without them due to liability and cost issues. But SSPR pools have them, which is likely one reason Holly Pool is a favorite in Centennial.

“It is a favorite community neighborhood pool,” said DeBartolomeis. “It’s a public pool, but it kind of feels like a private pool for people who live in Cherry Park.”

Nestled into the neighborhood, Holly Pool is home to the Holly Park Sharks Swim Team for kids 5 and older. According to the team’s website, it’s commit-ted to developing the technical skills of competitive swimming, strengthening friendships and encouraging all swimmers to strive for their personal best.

“� e parents are very active,” said DeBartolomeis. “� ey love their pool, and they love their swim team.”

She said attendance numbers are up at outdoor pools throughout the district.

“� at’s great, because it’s an active sport you can do all your life, and the kids are learning at an early age,” she said.

Many of those kids work at the pool as teenagers, whether at the concession stand or even as pool managers.

“It’s kind of a nostalgic thing for them,” said DeBartolomeis.

Brian Hart, owner of Frame de Art, said the focus is to provide great quality and value as his company works with customers to select how they want their memories framed.

� e sound of the nail guns echo o� the walls of the store that are lined with examples of how the members of the sta� uses a variety of sizes, shapes and frames to create a custom frame for each project. � ere are shadow boxes for military medals and more traditional and classic frames for � ne art as well as their sports memorabilia.

“When I was in college, I loved art and had walls � lled with art and no furniture,” Hart said. “I decided to start my own business because I knew I would never get tired of taking pieces of art and be really creative when I framed them.”

Frame de Art moved from a 1,000-square-foot shop near the University of Denver after Hart purchased the 5,000-square-foot building in Englewood.

� e company will celebrate 30 years in business early next year. Hart said the move has been great because the shop is the busiest it has ever been.

Jim Beetham, owner of A Better Car-wash, strives to o� er customers the best facility and good customer service.

“If something doesn’t live up to the word better, call (me) directly,” he said. “I work hard to live up to that part of the name.”

A Better Carwash, which o� ers self-serve or automatic washes, has been operating in Golden for 11 years, and in Arvada for six.

Both locations are busier in the winter, Beetham said, because the industry competes with “garden hoses in the driveway” in the summer. But, he said, it’s important for people to know that it is bad for the environment to do at-home car washes.

At a car wash facility, the dirty water

goes through a drain and is � rst treated onsite, then goes to the city for further treatment before it is released into the rivers. When done at home, the dirty wa-ter goes directly into the storm drain, so all the stu� on the car—soap, antifreeze, oil, chemicals—pollute the rivers.

People appreciate the high-quality equipment A Better Carwash o� ers, Beetham said. � e automatic machines are the best in the world, he said. � ey’re German-made, he said, and are the same machines used on Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Rolls-Royce.

Although the Durán Family, owners and operators of El Dorado Mexican Restaurant, has consistently won Best of the Best awards since 2011 for best green chili, best burrito and best Mexican food, what they are most proud of this year is winning best family restaurant.

“It’s always been our goal to create a family environment,” said Eric Durán. He added his family is close-knit, and now the community of Golden has become a part of their family.

His grandmother taught them to appreciate good food, Durán said, and the restaurant incorporates many of her recipes in the menu. � e Durán Family, originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, has been in the restaurant business for more than 20 years, beginning with José Durán who passed his knowledge down to his

two sons, Eric and Sergio.

� e restaurant opened seven years ago on May 1. High demand prompted them to double the size of the patio for sum-mertime diners two years ago, and now they are looking to do some expansions on the inside to accommodate larger groups and families.

Winning awards boosts moral among the sta� , Sergio said. Working in the restaurant industry is both challenging and fun, he said, because every day is something new. But the Durán Family strives to keep things consistent for the loyal customers.

“Just to keep (up with) that level of appreciation and expectation from the people,” he said, “knowing we’ve won awards in the past.”

In the summertime, Splash at Fossil Trace is popular among people local to Je� erson County, but people from all over the Denver-metro area are attracted to Golden’s water park.

“Splash is the perfect place for people to cool o� on a hot, summer day,” man-ager Joe Mallory said. And “it’s easily accessible for all of Denver because of the light rail.”

Splash, which opened on June 1, 2002, has won Best of the Best in the past. Its main attraction is probably the water-slides, Mallory said.

“� e slides are tall enough to be part of an amusement park,” he said. � ey “set us apart from other outdoor pools.”

New to the water park this year is the play equipment on the splash pad—an area separate from the two pools with

fountains and other water structures.

� e water park’s lap pool is 25 meters in length, 12-feet deep and features a diving board.

� e leisurely pool, the play pool, is kept at about 90 degrees. It is inclined, so children of all ages can enjoy it. It also features the slides, play equipment similar to a jungle gym and a 500-gal-lon water bucket that tips over when it reaches a certain � ll level.

People also appreciate that Splash! employs a “highly-trained and profes-sional aquatic sta� ,” Mallory said, and added that many of the employees come back every year to work at the water park as a summer job.

“We have a � rst-class group of people working here,” Mallory said.

Whether you need a cozy place for your dog to stay, or you want someone to watch your furry friend in the comfort of your own home while you’re gone, iCare Pet Sitting o� ers services to keep your pets at ease — and then some. Everybody gets love and play time.

Owner and “Alpha dog” Bonnie Cannon, who’s been pet sitting for 27 years, lives in Highlands Ranch near Rock Canyon High School and provides a B & B for animals, including doggie “condos” or play pens for up to six or seven dogs a day and sched-uled walks. � e pampered pooches have the whole � rst � oor inside and outside her home, including deck space and a yard to watch the sunrise, or furniture inside to climb on, whichever they prefer.

In addition, Cannon has four full-time independent pet consultants, some of

which are vet technicians, who will watch, walk and feed your pets, at your own home. Cannon and at least two of her consultants have experience with farm animals and are also willing to milk cows or tend to goats and donkeys if needed.

� e “very understanding” owner makes sure pets as comfortable as they can be while away from their owners, even if it means accommodating to handicaps and medication routines. She charges a higher rate for 24-hour care, but keeps pets for $35 a day and night, if they’re picked up before 9 a.m. the following day.

After a life of accounting, Cannon, who has run iCare for more than two years, said the main reason she got into pet sitting is because she much prefers dealing with the wagging of tails, rather than the wagging of tongues.

“� ese people are picky, and I don’t blame them,” he said. “And that’s who we wanted to attract.”

� e shop specializes in BMW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Audi and VW repairs. Waldron makes sure to hire only factory-trained and certi� ed technicians with an extensive range of expertise, and uses only factory-approved parts, professional tools and updated diagnostic equipment.

� e shop is also a licensed retailer of � ne German automobiles, said Waldron.

“We can also locate just about any ve-hicle you are looking for, and you can trust

when you purchase a vehicle from us it has been fully inspected,” he said.

Waldron and his wife, Susan, opened the shop seven years ago after having both spent much of their careers in the world of big franchises.

“It was a chance to do what we were trained and skilled in for ourselves,” he said.

It’s that mom-and-pop attitude he thinks keeps his customers coming back. Every-one who walks in the door is greeted like family, and the shop always full of banter and chitchat.

“It’s a load of fun around here,” he said. “� ey enjoy coming here. Isn’t that a bi-zarre statement? I mean, who likes getting their car worked on?”

Lone Tree’s Blu� s Regional Park o� ers a wide, soft-surface, 3-mile loop trail that cuts through the 253-acre park. It is growing in popularity, but because it is tucked-away behind the Super Target, it’s still something of a hidden gem.

� e trail’s width makes it easy for walkers to travel side by side and chat while still get-ting a good workout. And the rolling terrain provides a great cardio ride for mountain bikers. Because it’s virtually treeless, snow melts quickly, keeping it passable year-round.

� e Blu� s is a delightful spot for wildlife watching. Deer, birds of prey and coyotes all call the area home.

And the views are well worth the lung strain it takes to reach the top. At various points, downtown Denver, Parker, Pikes Peak, Mount Evans and Longs Peak all are

clearly visible. Closer in, you’ll get a good sampling of Douglas County’s housing mix, from the upscale townhouses of RidgeGate to the generous horse properties in McAr-thur Ranch.

Tired? A few well-placed benches can help you catch your breath.

For those who want to venture outside the loop, the options are vast. � e East-West Regional and Willow Creek trails branch o� from Blu� s Regional Trail. � e East-West extends for 20 miles and the Wil-low Creek ties eventually into the Highline Canal Trail, which means the only limit on your hike or bike ride is your schedule and your stamina.

Douglas County, which manages the park and trail, recently paved the once-dirt main parking lot on Crooked Stick Place and added new signs and maps.

When David Mura opened Fit Soldiers Fitness Revolution � ve years ago, he was taking a leap of faith. He started from the bottom, with very little cash � ow. But with determination and grit, he continued to grow his business to eventually be named the best weight loss and workout center for 2015.

“By winning it re-con� rms why we are here and what we’re doing,” Mura said. “Our calling is to help people get healthier, and that’s what we’re doing.”

Mura and the trainers at Fit Soldiers focus on taking group � tness and making it look and feel like personal training. � e trainers spend speci� c time and attention on each person helping them to prog-ress as needed. And because it’s a group setting, Mura said he’s able to lower the

price.

“We’re constantly progressing and modifying based on the individual,” he said. “It feels like personal training, but because we’re in a group, people are pay-ing less.”

Another focus at Fit Soldiers is the mental and emotional side of � tness and weight loss. Mura takes the time to connect with his clients to learn the real reason why he or she is trying to lose weight. He said usually it ends up being more than just the desire to look good in a bathing suit--it’s about their quality of life.

“We make sure people have the real rea-son for getting in shape at the front of their minds,” he said. “We want to be a support system for people and be there along their journey of getting healthy.”

Anthony’s II in � ornton is serving up much more than just hand-tossed pizza. � e family-owned business also o� ers pastas, calzones, sub sandwiches and wings.

“What’s really unique is the fact that our entire menu is also available for delivery,” said owner Antonio Celeste. “Even if it’s our chicken parmesan, we’ll deliver it to your doorstep.”

Since 1997, Anthony’s II has been producing made-from-scratch Italian fare. Whether it’s the marinara sauce or the pizza dough, customers can expect fresh food made daily.

“You can buy a pizza for $5 almost anywhere, but it’s going to taste like a $5 pizza,” Celeste said. “We focus on using fresh ingredi-ents and making everything from scratch.”

Anthony’s II also has a dedicated customer base. Celeste said there are some die-hard fans who compare his pizza to being as good as the pizza on the east coast. Other customers tell him An-thony’s II pizza is the only kind there kids will eat.

“You think every kid would love every kind of pizza, but some don’t,” Celeste said. “I have to give all the credit to our success to the loyalty of the customers. It means a lot.”

Sondra and Frank Sertic, the owners of Advantage Auto Repair, 18700 S. Longs Way, take immense pride in the long list of loyal customers who come through the doors. Repeat business and frequent referrals indi-cate that people are not only happy with the work, but satis� ed with how Advantage Auto approaches each repair.

“You can see your car being worked on and Frank likes to do a show-and-tell sce-nario to make them feel completely comfort-able (before a repair is made),” said Sondra Sertic, who runs the business side of things. “He’s not just a business owner and the face up front. He actually oversees all the work in the back and even performs some of the more complicated jobs himself.”

Advantage Auto, which opened in 2004 and has been in its existing location since 2007, also has an open-door policy that enables customers to bring in a third party to review the proposed repair.

Despite the demand for a quality repair shop, the Sertics have no plans to expand their footprint.

“We’re happy in Parker. We like the small-town-community feel, we raised all three kids here, they all graduated from Pondero-sa,” Sondra Sertic said.

� e fact that they are serving their neigh-bors has the Sertics that much more invested in their work. It didn’t take long to realize that a personal approach is the key to the best form of advertising: word of mouth.

“Trust is hard to � nd in auto repair,” she said. “It’s really our goal to build a relation-ship with our customers and keep them coming back and refer us.”

� e clinic prides itself on being sustain-able — doing things like having a nearly paperless o� ce, and using low-volatile organic compound paint — as well as making a statement about the holistic wellness of patients, their human owners, and even the sta� .

“Everything is interrelated,” Sarhang-pour says when asked why such things are important.

� e clinic o� ers a range of services, including dental work, and specialty surgeries.

“We have virtually every service, Sar-hangpour said. “Ninety-nine percent of the time they won’t have to go anywhere else.”

Many of the dogs and cats seen at the clinic are older, and have a host of problems. Sarhangpour said the clinic has a speci� c “Restore program” designed to help these ailing animals feel better by doing things like weaning them o� of un-necessary medication, and rehabilitating old problems.

Sarhangpour said his talented sta� strives to o� er a better level of care be-cause the goal is to help that furry family member get to a better quality of life.

Every year Water World in Federal Heights hosts the annual Belly Flop Splashdown. � e contest challenges college students to risk their bellies in the name of scholarships and laptops.

� e water park partners with Colleges in Colorado to o� er the fun event and this year will mark the 19th year. � e � oppers are judged on height, splash and creativity. Often students will paint their bellies in bright colors or wear costumes.

“� e Belly Flop contest has been carried on television net-works across the country from the Today Show to ESPN,” said Water World spokesperson Joann Cortez. “� e air between the � opper and the water gives you a sense of anticipation that, no matter how hard you try, you can’t tear your eyes away from it.”

� e Belly Flop Splashdown happens every June and attracts college students from around the state.

To read the list of spa services o� ered at � e Pampering Place Day Spa is to imagine a large building � lled with a small army of beauticians to accommodate the massages, facials, nails, waxing, airbrush tanning, a steam shower, therapeutic soaks, as well as a gift shop.

All those services helped motivate Pam-pered Place customers to vote for the busi-ness as the 2015 Best of the Best in multiple categories.

But in truth, all those happy customers, and all those services, are all handled by the aptly-named Terri Work, and her home-based business.

Work is a 5th generation native Colorado-an who took her massage and manicure skills and her idyllic Wheat Ridge house and built a thriving spa business over the last nine years.

She says the secret to her success has been

a lot of hard work, and focusing intently on her clients.

“It’s not the quantity of people I can get in the door. I want each client to feel like they’re the only one,” Work said.

Indeed, with only one employee, � e Pampered Place can only have one customer at a time. Work said her regular clientele has already booked their visits through the end of the year, to ensure they can get in.

� e huge range of services helped es-tablish � e Pampering Place’s legitimacy beyond what the public perception of a home-based business might be, according to Work.

“My favorite is the massage, facial combi-nation,” she says, because it gives the body time to relax and enjoy the experience. “It just kind of feels decadent.”
