BY RUDI ALCOTT
Federal Way Mirror Publisher
Over the course of the last eight years, I have had the pleasure of unveiling the winners of the Best of Federal Way that you, as the readers, have chosen.
At the annual community event last Wednesday, we gave away plaques, had a number of gift basket prizes and announced the first winner of the Citizen of the Year and the first stories of the year.
Over the course of the year, the editorial team has kept a list of stories that are the most touching and interesting that they have written in their careers. These stories were then condensed down to a winner. This is a new addition to the Best of Federal Way and we will continue to do this moving forward. It’s only appropriate that we recognize, along with the businesses, the community members that make Federal Way a great place to live.
It was a tough choice to pick a Citizen of the Year recipient. All of the monthly winners are incredibly worthy of this honor, but Derek Warner (see story on page 14) was the clear winner. Anyone that volunteers to fix his mom’s and her friend’s appliances, pipes and dryers earns a special place in the heart of the Mirror’s staff, especially when you consider that the overwhelming majority of the voting staff are women and mom’s themselves.
A special thanks goes out to the finalists: Diana Noble-Gulliford, Lou Olmstead, Bob Dar-rigan, Karl Grosch, Brenda Oliver, Jerry Korum, Dana Buck, Peggy LaPorte, Jon McIntosh, Leah Boehm-Brady, Bob Wroblewski, Byron Hiller and Jeanne Burbidge.
It is with great pride I present to you the winning votes for our 17th Best of Federal Way winners. Thanks for taking the time to vote, and viewing the messages on the following pages. I welcome your continued help in years to come to make this a continued success.

Derek Warner named the Mirror’s Citizen of the YearFROM STAFF REPORTS
A local handyman, Derek Warner was named the Mirror’s Citizen of the
Month for December 2013. On Wednesday he was chosen as Citi-zen of the Year. Nominated by his mother, Delores Warner, Derek is a selfless giver, following in the footsteps of his father, according
to Delores. “This young
man has served as a ‘handyman’ for years, free of charge for many of his neighbors, as
well as many of (my) neighbors who request his help and expertise in fixing many of their problems,” Delores wrote in an email to The Mirror. “His father taught him that help-ing others when they can’t help themselves was the noble thing to do. They did it together for years before his father died of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease). Since his father’s death, nearly four years
ago, Derek has carried on his father’s legacy of helping others.”
Delores notes that Derek has helped repair washing machines, dryers, garage doors, water pipes and a myriad of other issues that many encounter in their day-to-day lives. She said Derek also has been integral in helping “a widowed lady” get to doctor’s ap-pointments, the grocery store and has also been a caregiver when
that woman fell ill.“(He) has helped eliminate
moss from their roofs, repaired (numerous things) over the years, right down to catching moles in their yards,” Delores noted in her email. Derek was also instrumen-tal in being a caregiver for his fa-ther, Vern, for the last 18 months of Vern’s life.
“He is always Johnny-on-the-Spot when someone needs him to do whatever it is he can, expect-ing nothing in return. And he checks in on me every day to help me with anything I need,” she said.
Derek said his selfless giving is just how he was raised by his parents, and that, to him, is just how things should be. “I was raised that way and I don’t expect anything in return,” he said. “I’ve been blessed to be born here, blessed with a good job, blessed with a wonderful family and friends. It’s kind of a karma thing. The more you do, the more you get back in return.”

The first sign of leukemia was the bruising that crept up 6-year-old Sienna’s legs.
Her dad and stepmom, Josh and Janette Braun, noticed it but chalked up the cause to bike ped-als. She was learning how to ride.
But the second sign was what did it.
Two weeks after the bruising, Sienna went on a field trip to the zoo and Janette Braun was one of the chaperones.
“It was kinda odd because her
exact words were ‘my body doesn’t feel right,’” Janette Braun said, adding that they figured it was just the flu.
Her family decided it was time to go to the emergency room after her temperature rose to 103.9 and her dad noticed little red dots on her arms called petechia - a symptom of leukemia.
There at St. Francis Hospital, the family would spend the hours of the night having Sienna do count-less tests and blood work before being blindly sent to Seattle Chil-dren’s Hospital for more tests.
“We were [at Children’s] for
about two hours total before they finally told us what was going on,” Josh Braun said, noting the time was 5 a.m. “They told us she had [acute lymphoblastic leukemia].”
The next eight days were spent at Children’s trying to figure out the cause of the infection Sienna had caught. Doctors gave her a round of chemotherapy, steroids, antibiot-ics and she was given a port and a nasogastric tube.
“It was like five different medica-tions twice a day that she was tak-ing,” Josh Braun recalled.
But somehow during those eight days, before Sienna was allowed to
go home, a family friend set up a gofundme.com account.
Her stepmom went to Silver Lake Elementary to let the office and teachers know Sienna wouldn’t be returning for the end of the year but she was surprised to find out they already knew. Not only did they know, but members of the PTA organized a bake sale during the kindergarten choir concert and all the funds would go to the family.
“Some lady baked 150 cupcakes and they had so much baked goods donated that just from the evening show of the kindergarten choir and after school the following day, they raised $1,990,” Janette Braun said

in awe. “And then, to top that off, a third grade teacher matched it out of her own pocket - a third grade teacher wrote us a check for $1,100.”
The PTA also organized a coin drive at Buffalo Wild Wings where 10 percent of all sales (ex-cluding alcohol) was donated.
Before they knew it, the com-munity had rallied thousands of dollars to help them out.
“The financial help is amazing but what affects our family the most is how every single family and staff member has reached out in one way or another to show us support,” Janette Braun wrote in an email.
Silver Lake Elementary PTA co-president Julie Halpin said orga-nizing the fundraiser to help the family was an obvious decision.
“It feels like a no-brainer to me in the sense that we are all at the school and we all have kids,” Halpin said. “I guess you just can’t imagine if it were to happen to your family or your children. You see somebody that needs help and your natural reaction is to help.”
Halpin said she sometimes substitute teaches and has been in Sienna’s classroom for a couple of hours before Sienna had to quit school. Also, her daughter was in kindergarten and would play with Sienna at recess occasionally.
“It just feels like if my fam-ily needed help, I would want
somebody to step up to help too,” she said.
The Braun family currently has about $6,800 in donations.
The money allows Josh Braun, the primary breadwinner, to take time off work so he can be there for Sienna as she reclaims her health. It also pays for the thermometers, sanitizers, soaps, masks, air filters and the regular trips to the hospital - about $125 a week in gas for their V8 engine. Initially, Sienna had to go to the hospital every 48 hours to ensure her numbers were where they needed to be. Her blood platelets were under 10,000 - the normal count is about 150,000.
The school was helpful in having a tutor come out to Sienna’s home
before she graduated kindergarten. “Her teacher jumped right all
over it so she [was] coming twice a week along with other teachers,” Janette Braun said. “All these teach-ers keep sending messages,’Can we come see her,’ and they’re just so hands on, it just amazes me.”
With a survival rate of about 90-95 percent, Sienna’s technically cancer free and in remission but there’s still two-and-a-half more years of treatment to catch the “hidden” cancer cells.
Josh Braun said the hardest part has been watching her go one day running around like his “typical little Sienna” and then later watching her have trouble go up and down the stairs because of low energy.
“She wasn’t a big fan of losing her hair, that was the hardest part,” Janette Braun said. “She’s been amazing, I don’t think I could have handled it as well as she has.”

Couple fuels wish for young man with cancerBY CARRIE RODRIGUEZ
David Padilla smiled.“I love it — it’s so sweet,”
the 18-year-old said as his hands glided across the new ruby red paint of his 2006 Ford Mustang.
Smiles have become a rare occur-rence for Padilla since he was diag-nosed with a form of bone cancer in his knee, sarcoma, in October of 2012.
But on Wednesday afternoon, Bob and Linda Bjorneby presented Padilla with his biggest wish that he could dream up — a new and improved Mustang.
The Bjorneby’s took about three months to completely strip the paint from Padilla’s silver car, rip out the
interior and make it over with new paint and accessories, including a new stereo system, sequential tail lights and a blacked-out dash with carbon fiber.
Padilla made his wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions.
Padilla was diagnosed with bone cancer during the middle of his school year, when he was a senior at Timberline High School in Olympia.
“He was a baseball player, so he was playing a lot of baseball games,” said his mother, Kari. “He got into a game and he hit a ball and he walked out of the game; he couldn’t take the pain in his leg any longer, so we knew something was really serious.”
After David Padilla was diag-
nosed, things “rolled really fast,” said his mother, noting he started chemotherapy in the same week.
Once doctors removed the tumor from David Padilla’s leg, his prog-nosis looked good as the chemo had killed 99 percent of the tumor.
Eight more months of chemother-apy followed, and that’s when David Padilla and his family discovered the dark side of cancer. They lived at the Ronald McDonald House across from Seattle Children’s Hospital and he had to drop out of school.
“It’s like a big hotel with big com-munity kitchens,” Kari Padilla said of the Ronald McDonald House. “When you go to that place, it’s shocking. When you walk in to the Ronald and you sit down for your first meal and you look around at
everyone and you are just new to it, it’s traumatizing.”
She said when she looked at the other children, she saw some with feeding tubes and others with miss-ing limbs.
“It’s just like a war zone,” she said, crying. “And then you see, like, is this what I’m going to become? It’s scary.”
David Padilla had to cut his chemo short in May 2012 after the drugs reduced his heart function.
His family went home after that and every three months, David Padilla and his mother go to Seattle Children’s for an all-day evaluation that includes bone scans and heart tests.

Decatur High School senior Dom Cooks, who has been battling an inoperable brain tumor for two years, passed away Tuesday night at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way.
Cooks was diagnosed with the brain tumor in the spring of 2012 and his larger-than-life personality defined Decatur during his battle with the disease. Cooks received
an outpouring of support from across the United States during his senior year and touched countless lives.
His condition had been worsening in recent days and Cooks had been in a coma since last weekend, said David Brower, Decatur principal.
“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn his passing,” he said. “But our spirits are lifted as we reflect on the way he has inspired us and thousands across the nation. Dom taught
us that tomorrow is not a promise and to embrace each day. Dom’s family has asked for privacy during this time. I ask that you keep Dom and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”
Decatur has set up posters around the school’s campus for staff and students to share their thoughts.
Cooks got to live out numerous dreams during his senior year at Decatur. Decatur students appointed him as an Associated
Student Body (ASB) officer and named him homecoming king in the fall.
Cooks was a standout football and basketball player during his time at Saghalie Middle School and Decatur, before getting the dire diagnosis.
But Cooks was able to get back on the football field one last time during the Ga-tors’ homecoming game against Auburn Mountainview during the fall at Federal Way

Memorial Stadium. Cooks scored a ceremonial touch-down just before halftime of the game.
Cooks also had the honor of being a Decatur High School graduate. The school organized a special commencement ceremony in February. Cooks and his twin sister Diamond received their diplomas in front of a standing-room only crowd, which included a special appearance by Se-attle Seahawks wide receiver and Super Bowl champion Doug Baldwin.
“Dom has been and remains a visible force here at Decatur, known by nearly everyone,” Brower wrote. “He told me that he believed his purpose in life, which he discovered after being diag-nosed with brain cancer, was to teach and inspire others. He has indeed done that.”
“We will miss his daily words of wisdom that he shared over the announce-ments. And we will miss his positive attitude and his irrepressible wit. But he will always be in our hearts. He is a true Decatur Gator and it was a major part of his identity. Though we mourn today, we believe, as he
always told us, ‘It is a great day to be a Gator.’”
Ironically, on the day of his passing, Cooks officially finished up in third place in the 2014 Air National Guard USA TODAY High School Sports Inspiration contest, which concluded Tuesday morning. Cooks finished with a grand total of 214,260 votes during the final round, which included 10 student/athletes from across the nation. Aaron Gebhart from New Oxford, Penn., won with 335,765 votes.
Cooks was awarded a berth into the final round after finishing in 11th place during the semifinal round of voting. But Cooks was awarded a berth into the top 10 after Nicholas Hibbeler gave up his spot.
Hibbeler is a soccer player from Park Hill High School in Kansas City and finished in 10th place in the semi-final round. Hibbeler was diagnosed with testicular cancer in July and under-went surgery and six rounds of chemotherapy treatment while also playing high school soccer.
It was the second time another student/athlete has thrown their support
Cooks’s way. After the first round of voting, Luke Smorey asked his voters to back Cooks. Smorey attends Baldwin High School in Pittsburgh.
“Although I am very thankful of everyone’s votes, I would like to ask for all of you to vote for a con-testant who I have found much more inspirational than myself,” Smorey wrote in an email. “His name is Dominique Cooks. He was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor and only has a few weeks to live. I feel that someone like Dominique deserves this award much more than I do.”
