Conferences/Training

In  2015  Nutri7on  First  offered  con7nuing  educa7on  trainings  at  7  different  loca7ons  and  had  613  people  in  total  aAendance  at  these  events!  Thank  you  to  the  Conference  Planning  CommiAee:  Erica  Lamson,  Meg  Griswold  and  Larisa  Harvey.

Partnered  with  The  Breas\eeding  Coali7on  of  Washington  to  present  the  2015  Nancy  Danoff,  MD,  Spirit  of  Service  Award  and  the  MaryAnn  O’Hara,  MD,  Physician  Leadership  Award.  This  year’s  awardees  were  Melissa  Bonghi  and  Dr.  Jody  Cousins.

Again  this  year  Nutri7on  First  trainer  Michele  CrockeA,  IBCLC,  PCPA,  LLLL,  traveled  the  state  providing  breas\eeding  training  at  loca7ons  requested  by  local  WIC  agencies.  She  provided  “Founda7ons  in  Lacta7on”  at  three  loca7ons,  and  added  a  “Best  Prac7ces”  training  for  those  who  had  already  aAended  founda7ons  and  were  ready  to  enhance  their  skills  in  lacta7on  support.

    Advocacy

State  Level

Nutri7on  First  supported  nutri7on  related  bills  in  Olympia  again  this  year.  Breakfast  aeer  the  Bell,  Farm  to  School  Direct  Small  Farms  Marke7ng  Program,  and  funding  for  the  Farmer’s  Market  Nutri7on  Program  were  all  priori7es.

Carolyn  Conner  and  Lindsay  Irion  aAended  Have  a  Heart  for  Kids  Day  and  met  with  legislatures  in  their  home  districts.  Carolyn  Conner  also  aAended  Good  Food  and  Farming  Day.  Nutri7on  First  was  also  represented  at  Hunger  Ac7on  Day  by  board  members  Wende  Dolstad  and  Bonnie  Fritz.

Aeer  a  record  long  legisla7ve  session,  we  were  pleased  to  have  the  FMNP  program  funded  for  the  2016-­‐2017  biennium.    Breakfast  aeer  the  Bell  and  Farm  to  School  programs  will  remain  a  legisla7ve  priority  in  2016.

Federal  Level

Stacey  Busey,  Tiffany  Schamber  and  Carolyn  Conner  aAended  the  Na7onal  WIC  Associa7on  Leadership  Conference  in  March,  and  met  with  staff  from  our  Washington  State  Senators  and  Congressman’s  offices.  (Congress  was  not  in  session  this  week.)    Topics  discussed  included  WIC  program  funding,  breas\eeding  peer  counselor  program  support,  and  upcoming  Child  Nutri7on  Program  Reauthoriza7on.

WIC  Celebra7on  with  Congresswoman  Suzan  DelBene

2015  Marked  40  years  of  WIC!  A  celebra7on  was  held  at  the  Mount  Vernon  Farmer’s  Market  with  special  guest  Congresswoman  Suzan  DelBene.  

 Board  Opera7ons• Changed  membership  and  opera>onal  year  from  October  –  September,  to  January  –  December  (calendar  year)

• Waived  2016  individual  membership  fee  

• Started  strategic  planning  process

• Plan  for  updated  website  in  2016

• Board  Business  is  conducted  via  monthly  board  conference  calls  and  two  in  person  mee>ngs

Membership

In  order  to  make  individual  membership  less  confusing  and  available  to  all,  Nutri3on  First  decided  to  waive  the  individual  membership  fee  for  2016.    Anyone  who  has  aSended  a  Nutri3on  First  conference,  or  who  already  receives  our  newsleSer,  is  now  considered  a  member.    We  currently  have  just  over  900  members.
