them to identify themselves as confident, capable scholars and lifelong learners by

inspiring engagement in reading, writing and research through hands-on interaction and

visual arts.

Dear Friends and Supporters of SHARP Literacy,

It seems like it was just a short time ago that we wrote last year’s letter for the SHARP Annual Report. Maybe time

flew by because SHARP Literacy has been involved in so many new and exciting ventures during its 20th anniversary

year. We’d like to share some highlights with you…

SHARP’S Education Department has put a great amount of time and effort into creating our K5 curriculum, which is

now in place in many SHARP schools. This effort provides greater exposure of the SHARP program and greater

opportunity for students to benefit from the SHARP program at an earlier age. SHARP Literacy’s 13th We Love to Learn

book, Explore MKE: Your Neighborhood, Our City, was unveiled on January 31 at the Wisconsin Center. We especially

appreciate the Brewers Community Foundation and Ryan Braun in supporting this book.

Spring brought several events: Read Across America celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Dignitaries including Governor

Scott Walker, Mayor Tom Barrett and County Executive Chris Abele were guest readers for this highly popular and

successful event. In May, SHARP partnered with McDonald’s of Southeast Wisconsin in the 1st Annual Unwrapped

event. Held at La Casa de Esperanza School in Waukesha, the event both raised funds for and awareness of SHARP

Literacy and our expansion into Waukesha County.

Summer featured SHARP’s largest ever Summer Learning Gain Initiative (SLGI) program, kicked off by Ryan Braun and

sponsored both by the Brewer Community Foundation and Ryan Braun. SLGI students created three murals and one

mosaic park bench. During the Books for Keeps and Summer Reading Challenge programs, over 8,500 books were

distributed to children. Waterstone Bank, Johnson Controls and McDonald’s of Southeast Wisconsin sponsored these

programs.

Chosen by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, SHARP Literacy is thrilled to be one of this year’s Heart of Canal Street

Signature Charities. And in January, the Weather Cube, a joint project with MSOE, MATC, and SHARP Literacy, will be

unveiled at Discovery World as an attraction.

As we move into next year, development of a new and up-to-date SHARP Literacy website continues. We hope to

launch it by early March. In conjunction with the website changes, SHARP has also invested a great deal of time and

energy in branding. Spearheaded by Zizzo Group, these important marketing and messaging changes will provide the

community with a more accurate picture of who we are.

Because SHARP has already put its K5 curriculum into place, it was important for us to develop a supportive K4

curriculum as well. This curriculum is currently being piloted

in a handful of SHARP schools with the intention of having it

roll out for the 2017-18 school year.

We thank all of you for your continued support. SHARP

Literacy could not be where it is today without you. Now,

more than ever, your support for the future is needed. As

the educational landscape continues to change, so SHARP

must innovate, adapt, and change as we begin our third

decade of service to the Milwaukee area community.
