INTRODUCTION• Athleticdepartmentrecruitmentpracticesenhancetheinternational and non-South Carolina student base on campus.Thisprovidesopportunitiesforgreaterdiversityandmulticulturalexperiences;
• AthleticshasstrongcommunitytieswhichleadstoincreasedpublicityfortheUniversitythroughthevariousmediaoutlets;
• Athleticsbynaturecreatesan“espritdecorps”withthecommunityandprovidesasenseofpridewhenprogramsaresuccessful. An example of this would be the increased fan baseseeninmanyofourprogramsincludingbasketballandbaseball;
• Staffmembersandstudent-athletesgivebacktothecommunitybyparticipatingincommunityserviceprojectssuchasAdopt-A-Parkwayprograms,readingtotheBoysandGirlsClubmembers,speakingtovariouselementaryandmiddleschoolgroups,andspeakingwhenrequestedatcivicgroupsandotherfunctions;
• Athleticsalsointeractswiththecommunitythroughpromotionsandfundraisinginitiatives.ExamplesincludethePacerClub,PoloTournament,golftournaments,sportsauctions,endowedscholarships,baseballrodeosandbullriding,etc.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEKUSCA Department of Athletics Mission Statement - The USC Aiken Department of Athletics is a member of the StudentLifeandServicesDivision.Asanintegralpartofthetotaleducationalprocessandthedevelopmentofstudents,athleticsfostersprideintheUniversityamongthestudents,faculty/staff,alumni,andfriends.Italsobuildssupportfortheinstitutionthroughoutthecommunity,region,state,andnation.

PBC HALL OF FAMEHILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. –Dr.RobertAlexander,DaneBurkhart,JamiCornwellandMandyGerolsteinWilkinsonwereinductedintotheinauguralPeachBeltConferenceHallofFame,whichwasrevealedTues-dayevening. Twenty-fivemembersoftheHallofFamewereformallyinductedonthe25thanniversaryoftheleague.TheclasswasdividedintoFoundingFathers,Student-AthletesandCoachesandAdministrators. AlexanderwasnamedChancelloroftheUniversityofSouthCarolinaAikenin1983andservedinthatcapacityuntilhisretirementin2000.HewasattheforefrontofthediscussionsforanewDivisionIIathleticconfer-encein1988atameetinginGreenville,S.C.,andlaterhostedtheDecem-ber3,1989,meetingwherethefoundationsforthePeachBeltConferencewerelaid.Atirelessadvocateofcreatingaleaguethatemphasizedbothathleticandacademicsuccess,Dr.AlexanderwaselectedbytheotherPresidentsandChancellorsastheChairmanofthePBACBoardofDirec-tors,hostedthefirstPBCannualmeetingsinAikenandservedaschair-manandwasalsoelectedthefirstPBACPresident.HenegotiatedthecontractforthehiringofthefirstPBACCommissioner,MarvinVanover. UnderDr.Alexander’sleadership,USCAiken,onceasmallbranchoftheUniversityofSouthCarolina,begantothrive.Enrollmentdoubled,andstudent/facultyratiosareamongthelowestwithinSouthCarolina’sstateassistedfouryearpublicinstitutions.Undergraduatedegreeprogramstripled,andseveralgraduateprogramsbecameapartoftheuniversity. DuringhistenureasChancellor,Dr.AlexanderwasastrongadvocateforPacerathleticsandwasinstrumentalingettingtheinitialfundingfortheConvocationCenter.ThefollowingintercollegiatesportswereaddedatUSCAikenwhileChancellor:men’ssoccer(1984),softball(1987),women’scrosscountry(1989),men’stennis(1992),women’stennis(1996)andwomen’ssoccer(1997). USCAikensawdramaticimprovementsinitsinfrastructureduringDr.Alexander’stenure.AmongthemaretheexpansionoftheGregg-Granite-villeLibraryandtheEtherredgeCenterforFineArtsin1986,andtheRuthPatrickScienceEducationCenterandtheSchoolofNursingBuildingin1999;constructionofastate-of-the-artSciencesBuildingin1989;theChil-dren’sCenterandtheRuthPatrickScienceEducationCenterin1991;theBusinessEducationBuildingin1994;theDuPontPlanetariumin1995;thenatatoriumin1997;relocationofthehistoricPickens-SalleyHousetotheUSC-AikenCampus;andacquisitionofPacerDownsstudentapartments. In1999,hereceivedtheEarlKaufftmanAwardfromtheUSC-AikenAcademyforLifelongLearningforhiscommitmenttoprovidingeduca-tionalopportunitiesforseniorcitizens.TheStudentPersonnelAssociationattheUniversityofSouthCarolinaawardedhimtheDistinguishedAlum-nusoftheYearin1996.In1990,theUniversityofSouthCarolinaBlackFacultyandProfessionalStaffAssociationhonoredhimwithanhonorablementionawardforAffirmativeAction.TheSouthCarolinaAssociationofHigherContinuingEducationpresentedhimwiththeOutstandingPresi-dent’sAwardin1987.In1985,Dr.AlexanderwasselectedasManoftheYearbytheGreaterAikenChamberofCommerce. HereachedthepinnacleofservicetotheStateofSouthCarolinainMayof2000whenhewasbestowedtheOrderofthePalmetto,thehighestdesignationthegovernorawardstoanindividual. In2000,Dr.Alexanderannouncedhisretirementafter17yearsofservice.HewasnamedDistinguishedChancellorEmeritusandremainsavitalandactivepartoftheAikenCommunity.HeestablishedthePaulineF.&JosephC.AlexanderMemorialScholarship,namedforhisparents,andwithhiswifefoundedtheRobert&LeslieAlexanderProgramEndowment,whichprovidesfundstoenhanceprograms,scholarshipsandlearningattheUniversityofSouthCarolinaAiken. BurkhartwasatthecenteroftheUSCAikengolfdynastythatwonthreestraightnationalchampionshipsatUSCAikenfrom2004to2006.FromAiken,S.C.,hewasthe2003PBCFreshmanoftheYearandnamedtheco-PlayeroftheYearin2005.Athree-timeAll-Conferenceselectionandthree-timeAll-American,hehelpedthePacerstothreestraightNCAASoutheastRegionaltitlesandthreePeachBeltConferencechampion-ships. BurkhartneverfinishedlowerthanseventhinanyofthefourPeachBeltChampionshipsheplayed.Hewonthe2005PBCIndividualMedal-isthonorwithroundsof68-70-67=205which,atthetimeofhisinduction,remainsthelowest54-holescoreinPBCtournamenthistory.
Hesetaschoolrecordwitha71.74strokeaveragein2004-05whichissixthonthePBC’sAll-Timelist.Hewonsixtotaltournamentsinhiscareer,alsotiedforsixthinthePBCrecordbook. InadditiontohisAll-Americaandconferencehonors,hewontheJackNicklausawardin2005giventotheDIINationalPlayeroftheYear.HealsowontheArnoldPalmerawardgiventothemedalistattheDIINationalChampionships,whichhewonwithscoresof71-68-68-72=279(-5).Hefinishedastherunner-upintheNationalChampionshipthefollowingyear. Burkhart,whograduatedwithadegreeinBusinessAdministrationin2006,wasalsoselectedtoplayonteamUSAagainstJapaninStanfordin2005. Cornwellwasatwo-sportstaratUSCAiken,earningnumerousacco-ladesinbothsoftballandwomen’sbasketball. Cornwellwasathree-timeAll-PeachBeltConferenceselectioninsoft-ball(2001,2002and2004).ShewasalsonamedtotheAll-TournamentteaminthePeachBeltConferencein2001. Ashortstop,Cornwell(1999-2004)ledthePacerstotwo30-winseasonsduringhertimewiththeprogram,leadingtheteaminbattingaverageinallfourofherseasonswiththePacers. CornwellconcludedherPacersoftballcareersecondinschoolhistoryinbattingaverage,hits,on-basepercentage,totalbasesandsacrificehits.SheconcludedhercareerowningthePeachBeltConferencerecordformostassistswith561.Shestillholdsthemarktothisday. Intotal,Cornwellconcludedhersoftballcareerinthetopfiveinschoolhistoryin12differentcategories. CornwellwasnamedthePeachBeltConferenceSoftballFreshmanoftheYearin2000,whichwasthesameyearthatshewasnamedthePeachBeltConferenceWomen’sBasketballFreshmanoftheYear.Sheistheonlystudent-athleteinPacerhistorytoclaimFreshmanoftheYearaccoladesintwosportsinthesameyear. InadditiontoclaimingFreshmanoftheYearplauditsin2000,Cornwell,apointguard,wasathree-yearteamcaptainonthewomen’sbasketballteamatUSCAiken.ShehelpedleadthePacerstoback-to-backPeachBeltConferenceNorthDivisiontitles(2000-01and2001-02)andthepro-gram’sfirsteverappearanceintheNCAADivisionIItop25. Afour-timeAll-PBCselection(2000,2001,2002and2003)inwomen’sbasketball,CornwellwasaDodgeTrucksHonorableMentionAll-Americaselectionin2001.Shewasawomen’sDivisionIIBulletinFreshmanAll-Americanin2000. Strongintheclassroomaswell,Cornwellwasathree-timeESPNTheMagazine/CoSIDAAcademicAll-Districtchoice(2001,2002and2003). 2015-16 TEAM REVIEWSCross Country The2015UniversityofSouthCarolinaAikencrosscountryteamwasoneoftheyoungestintheregion.However,undertheguidanceofheadcoachKaraKreutzer,thePacersexceededexpectationsatsomeofthemeetswhilegainingconsistencyfromtheyoungsquadastheseasonworeon.Ultimately,USCAikenperformedwellinthesixmeetsandcouldshineinyearstocomesinceithadjustone senior on the team.
ThePacers’rosterhadoneseniorinSamanthaLisekandonlyonejuniorinnewcomerBrookeInman.TherestofthesquadwasbolsteredbyfoursophomoresinAmandaBruenio,MakaylaDudley,AmberLaughinghouseandKyahOwusuandapairoffreshmeninBethanyFordhamandBrookThomas.
Inadditiontothedyadofrookies,USCAikenhadthreemorenewcomerstocollegiatecrosscountry.However,thatdidnotdeterKreutzerortheteam–asthesquadcametogethertohaveasolidcampaign.
Infiveofthesixmeets,thePacerswereledbyarookieinFordham.TheonlytimeareturnerguidedthesquadwasonthemuddycourseattheNCAASoutheastRegionalChampionshipasBruenioledtheteam.
Theteamimprovedonthe2014finishattheconferencechampionship,bestingthePatriotsforthethirdstraightweek.Fordhamledtheteamatthe6kracewithatimeof26:47for60thplace.Brueniowasthreespotsbehindher.Thomas,LisekandDudleywere72nd,76thand77th,respectively,helpingtheteambestFMUby23points.
Competingonatoughcourseafteradayofrain,thePacersplaced27thattheNCAASoutheastRegionChampionship,whichwashostedbyWingate.
Earlierintheseason,LisekwasnamedtothePBCall-academic team for her work in the classroom.
Men’s Soccer TheUniversityofSouthCarolinaAikenmen’ssoccerteamfinishedthe2015seasonshyofitsgoalofreachingtheNCAATournamentforthesecondtimeinschoolhistory,buttheteamthrivedthroughouttheseasonandplayedsomeofthe best soccer near the end of the season when the team washealthy.
Battlinginjuriesfromtheoutsetofthe2015campaignforcedheadcoachIkeOfojetoalterhisstartingline-upforoverhalftheseason.However,thesquadstillcompetedwellineverymatchandstartedtoputitalltogetherinthesecond half of the season.
Bygoing8-5-3,includinga5-3-1markagainstleaguefoes,
thePacersmanagedtoaccomplishsomethingthathadnotbeendoneintheprogram’shistory.Theteamgarneredback-to-backwinningseasonsforthefirsttimeinschoolhistory,freshoffthe2014seasonthatsawthesquadgo14-6-1andearnanNCAATournamentberth.Italsomarkedjustthesecondtimeinschoolhistorytheprogramhadbeenover.500inback-to-backconferenceschedules.
WiththeNo.5seedintheconference,USCAikenhadtomakethetrekbacktoFlorence,S.C.,tofaceFrancisMarion for the second time this season and for the second straightPBCTournament.
AlthoughthePacersled1-0atthebreak,thePatriotsmanagedtoscorethreegoalsandendUSCAiken’sbidforitssecondstraightappearanceinthePBCTournamentChampionship.Bynettingtheteam’slonegoalinthe28thminute,Simmondwasnamedtotheall-tournamentteam.

The4-12-1markisnotindicativeofthewaytheteamplayed,butinpartitwasduetoarguablythetoughestscheduleintheprogram’srecenthistory.USCAikensquaredoffagainstfiveofthesixteam’sthatmadethe2014NCAATournamentfromtheSoutheastRegion.ThePacerswereloadedwithnineseniors,butwiththechangeofcoaches,Georgebroughtdifferentideasandphilosophies.
TheteamsteppedoutofleagueplayforacontestagainstDivisionISouthCarolinaStateonOct.9.George’steamtooktheleadonBryeEpley’sgoalinthe50thminuteofaction.WithfouroutstandingsavesbyKarinCadwalader,includingoneinthesecondovertimesession,thePacersrecordedapointbygettingthetie.Afewinchesonewayoranother,andtheballsthathitthepostorcrossbarbyUSCAikenwouldhaveresultedinawin.

USCAikencontinuedapplyingpressureandthesquadbrokefreeforanothertallyinthe37thminuteofaction.AmandaMazzieflickedittoEpley,whofoundFurbertforthe2-0advantage.NicoleCrannyplayedall90minutesbetweenthepipesandstoppedfourshots,includingapairfrompoint-blankrange,topreservetheshutoutagainsttheLakers.

HeadcoachGlennCox’s2015teamwasoneofthebestinDivisionIIandrightfullyso.ThesquadhadthereturningPeachBeltConferenceandRegionPlayeroftheYearinAshleyDiedrich.However,theteamwasloadedacrossthefrontlinewithreturnersBrittanyFaulkner,JuliaForster,AliciaHines,AlyJohnson,JenniferLaw,AshleyLindandTaylorStratton.AddedtothemixanewsetterinEmilyTeelon,whosteppedintothestartingspotafterthegraduationofSheilaWalsh,togoalongwithsophomoresetterLaurenHoward.
ThebacklinewasarguablythestrongestintheregionandcouldhavematchedupagainstnearlyanyoneinthecountrywithMonicaCardona,ShawnHotson,DanielleMercer and Katie Toman.

DiedrichwasnamedthePBCPlayeroftheYearforthesecondstraightseason,becomingjustthethirdpersontoearn the honor twice. Toman was named a second-team all-conference performer while Diedrich and Teelon picked up all-tournament team honors.
Diedrich,StrattonandTomangarneredall-regionaccolades.Diedrichendedhercareerwith1,336kills,whichisthefourthmostinschoolhistory.Toman’s540digsarethesecondmostinasingleseason.
