Defence Capability Showcased at Land Forces 2014  Fourteen companies represented the Hunter at an interna onal land forces defence forum in Brisbane recently including HunterNet members Bohemia Interac ve, Hetronics, Sto s Industrial Supplies, Newcastle University, Unitronix and Varley, as well as HunterNet.

HunterNet Defence Project Director, Ian Dick said the conference proved a good opportunity to spruik the Hunter and Central Coast's defence businesses to the prime contractors involved in the $10 billion project to build the army's new armoured figh ng vehicles ‐ the Land 400.

Hunter Defence Land Systems – Land 400 Task Force was also highlighted as an example of how Hunter and Central Coast based large and medium sized defence enterprises, can leverage their integrated capacity to secure Australian industry content in Army Land Systems. Please see more informa on about Land 400 Task Force at the back of this edi on.

Defence buyers from around the globe also a ended and Ian and representa ve companies had discussions with Defence Minister Andrew Stoner.

A high‐ranking US army under‐secretary showed interest in the Hunter's Quiet Rush solar‐powered bike, which was one of 12 Hunter defence innovators to be shortlisted for the inaugural Land Defence industry innova on awards.

Aurecon Recognised for Excellence  This year’s awards season is off to a flying start with Aurecon among the top winners in Engineers Australia Excellence awards in Queensland, the Northern Territory and South Australia.

With regard to the Engineers Australia Northern Division  Excellence Awards (NT), Aurecon, together with the Power and Water Corpora on, won the People’s Choice Award for ‘future proofing’, Katherine's electrical transmission and electrical genera on infrastructure.  This involved the delivery of a robust supply system, including new and addi onal equipment, designed to meet the needs of the Katherine community over the next 20 plus years.

‘The team appreciated the votes it received for the People’s Choice Award, which saw the  Katherine project receive three  mes the number of votes as any other project’, said Carolyn Yates, Aurecon’s project director for the upgrade.

The project addressed many issues facing the supply system, which included increasing  unreliability of cri cal infrastructure, complicated by demand growth outstripping the available genera on capacity.

Aurecon are hos ng the HunterNet General Mee ng on Tuesday 21st of October at their new  state‐of‐the‐art facility at Warabrook.

HMS Mini Loader Locally Made and Now Selling  Argenton company and HunterNet member HMS Group has developed what it says is Australian‐first technology for the mining industry and has recorded its first na onal sales.

The first mini‐loader has been put to work at Holcim's Lynwood Quarry north of Goulburn, three years a er it was dreamt up.

Hunter born brothers Jamie and Simon Howard of HMS Group say the  machines are soon to be dispatched to mines in South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and sent overseas to Chile and China.

The remotely controlled mini‐loader sweeps up coal that drops off coal conveyer belts.

If done manually it's a job that can involve five or six men stooping beneath a one‐metre high  conveyer to recapture the coal and, because produc on has to be put on hold, that process can cost $180,000 an hour, according to the brothers, who have both worked underground and have a family history da ng back 100 years in the mining industry.

Recently returned from China as part of the HunterNet Smart Mining Mission, company director Jamie Howard say distributors were excited about the machine.

"In one to three years there could be hundreds of these," he says.

For Jamie, making it locally is a priority.

"It's about Hunter jobs," he says. Howard Mining Systems is  suppor ng nine or ten (10) local businesses. Everything that can be done, from the hydraulics to the spray pain ng, is done in the Hunter.

$50 million advanced manufacturing grants programme

PLEASE BE AWARE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY

Applica ons are now open for the new $50 million Manufacturing Transi on Programme, aimed at businesses inves ng in higher‐value manufacturing.

Applica ons are being accepted un l October 24 which is the first round of the federal programme offers grants between $1 million and $10 million, covering up to 25 per cent of a project’s cost over a two‐year period.

“The Manufacturing Transi on Programme is about moving firms away from low‐tech  commodity style produc on that may not be globally compe ve, to advanced manufacturing where  Australia’s specialised knowledge and skills give us an advantage”, said industry minister Ian Macfarlane.

To be eligible, a business must manufacture and be based in Australia, as well as registered for the GST and undertaking a project worth no less than $4 million.

Forgacs Voice Concerns at Inquiry The inquiry into the future of Australian shipbuilding recently visited Newcastle and Forgacs and urged the federal government to avoid job losses, skill stagna on and site shutdown, a senate inquiry has heard.

Forgacs chief execu ve Lindsay Stra on told the inquiry a further 660 permanent jobs would be lost within the year as the Air Warfare Destroyer project tapered off. Around 220 jobs have already gone in recent months.

‘‘With no major naval defence contracts in the pipeline Forgacs capability in the form of our  investment in the facility...and most importantly our highly skilled workforce...will  regre ably  disappear’’, Mr Stra on said.

The Abbo  government’s decision to exclude  Australian companies from tendering for a  contract to replace two naval ships means the Royal Australian Navy supply ships will be built in South Korea or Germany. The first report by the inquiry recommended the tender process be reopened to include Australian companies.

Mr Stra on called on the government to do all it could to avoid the ‘‘valley of death’’.

‘‘Lack of  opportunity will destroy the industry, the local work force and have a serious  economic impact on Newcastle, and indeed the Hunter region’’, he said.

The inquiry heard evidence that the Australian industry had the capacity to take on more work.

Mr Stra on said Forgacs had taken on 80 trainees for the Air Warfare Destroyer project and had the  capability to build components for the navy’s submarines.

Forgacs AWD program director David Eyre, le ,  Forgacs Tomago opera ons manager Shaun  Richardson, with Senate Economics Commi ee  members Ma hew Canavan and Chris Ke er .

The Australian Government will invest $188.5 million in Industry Growth Centres to pursue global excellence in areas of compe ve strength.

These centres will provide the infrastructure needed to drive growth and jobs crea on in five key sectors of the Australian economy:

food and agribusiness;  mining equipment, technology and services;  oil, gas and energy resources;  medical technologies and pharmaceu cals; and  advanced manufacturing sectors. A key part of the Government’s Industry Innova on and Compe veness Agenda, the centres will help industry exploit new global markets and supply chains, invent and commercialise new products and services and generate new jobs.

These industry‐led Centres will bring together exper se from business and industry, the scien fic and research communi es and the  university sector.

Currently fewer than five per cent of Australian businesses turn to the higher educa on sector – including scien sts and researchers –  directly for exper se and ideas.

Collabora on between business and research has proven to be the basis for enhanced interna onal compe veness in other countries. Growth Centres will foster these links and rela onships which are cri cal to future economic success.

The Minister for Industry will seek expressions of interest from business‐led consor a to establish five nonprofit Industry Growth Centres. Project funding will focus on market, value chain or technology issues to deliver commercial outcomes with sector‐wide impact. Each of the five Centres will receive funding of up to $3.5 million per year. The Centres will be required to establish a plan to become self‐sustaining a er four years and the Government will look to establish further centres based on the success of the programme.

Funding of $60 million will be available to convert ideas with great poten al into profitable commercial reali es. This element, comprising grants of up to $1 million, which must be matched by the company, will be delivered through the new Entrepreneurs’ Infrastructure  Programme.

In addi on $63 million will be available to the Centres to develop and deliver large scale collabora ve projects to build the capability and compe veness of their sectors.

There will be a staged roll out of the Centres from early 2015.

The Industry Growth Centres Ini a ve complements the Governments $155 million Growth Fund and $50 million na onal Manufacturing Transi on Programme. It also builds on the $484.2 million Entrepreneurs’ Infrastructure Programme.

Over the coming weeks, a series of Compe veness Agenda stakeholder roundtables will be held across the na on. This will be the first step in consul ng with industry and research on the implementa on of the Industry Growth Centres ini a ve.
