Midal Cables New Facility a Boom for Hunter Manufacturing

Midal Cables International (MCI) officially commissioned its new $60million aluminium cable manufacturing plant in Tomago on Friday March 28th. The state-of-the-art facility will directly employ 100 Hunter-based workers, as well as many more indirectly. The around-the-clock operation will have the capacity to produce 50,000 tonnes annually of alloy rod, wire and conductors for both the Australian and export markets. The facility is owned and operated by Bahrain-based Midal Cables, a highly diversified and globally respected business that has operated in the cables production industry for nearly 40 years. The new Tomago plant is a key component of the company’s international expansion plans and provides a welcome boost for both the Hunter and NSW manufacturing sectors. General Manager of Midal Cable International’s Australian operation, Tony Temelkovski, said today’s commissioning is an exciting major milestone for the business and the Hunter region. “Today is the realisation of years of planning and hard work by our teams in Bahrain and Australia,” Mr Temelkovski said. “This facility is an exceptional example of modern manufacturing with a highly-skilled workforce, lean engineering processes and state-of-the-art facilities. Our operational processes and efficiencies, combined with the quality and demand for our products, will ensure our business remains sustainable well into the future. “The foresight for this project came from our visionary leader Hamid Al Zayani, whose leadership, drive and passion has forged an international business with endless possibilities.” Mr Temelkovski said that Midal Cables identified Australia, and in particular the Hunter, as an ideal region to base its new operations. “Geographically, Australia is close to Midal Cables’ Asian and US-based customers, which allows us to export the end product faster,” Mr Temelkovski explained. “In addition, this location was selected due to its proximity to one of the world’s leading Aluminium smelters, Tomago Aluminium, who will supply molten aluminium directly to our site and significantly reduce our energy requirements. “The partnership we have formed with Tomago Aluminium is the cornerstone of our operations and has allowed us to drive greater efficiencies through our production processes.”

In commissioning the new operation, Mr Temelkovski also acknowledged a number of other key partners who have played key roles in delivering this important project for the Hunter.

“This project would not have been possible without the support of all levels of government in NSW, primarily the Department of Trade and Investment, Department of Planning and Infrastructure and Port Stephens Council.”

UVS ADCP Service Centre Up and Running in Newcastle ATSA/UVS Workshop Manager Grant Maddison said that the ADCP compass calibration service was now fully up and running at the UVS ADCP Service Centre in Newcastle. Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) measure the flow and discharge in rivers and streams and rely heavily on accurate compass calibration when transmitting data. Initial jobs completed at Newcastle had shown that methods for field calibration of ADCP compasses seem to be well known, however, many users seemed to be unaware of the need for workshop calibration of compasses. Grant said that one ADCP that had been received with a 20 to 30 degree error and that this had been successfully analysed and corrected. With an increased focus on ADCP data quality UVS is pleased to provide compass calibration in Australia for Teledyne RDI ADCPs. The ADCP “Silver Service” capability combines ADCP Overhaul with Verification and Validation including compass accuracy checks, pressure sensor accuracy checks and software and hardware checks for latest updates. Beam continuity, sensor and crosstalk checks ensure that instruments are in a known condition prior to deployment and comprehensive reporting. UVS is constantly working on improving their capability for ADCP service and their "Gold Service" will be available in late 2014. This will include full ADCP refurbishment combined with a Verification and Validation service.

Alkane Resources: Dubbo Zirconia Project (DZP) MESCA April 10th at Panthers Newcastle Brendan Ward, Commercial Manager and Nic Earner, Chief Operations Officer, Alkane Resources will be providing an update on the scope, requirements and timing surrounding their $1.0 Billion zirconium, niobium and rare earths project which is located near Dubbo in central NSW. The Dubbo Zirconia Project (DZP) is a new development based on one of the world’s largest known in-ground resources of zirconium, hafnium, niobium, tantalum, yttrium and rare earths. Due to the size of this deposit, the mine is expected to process about 1 MTPA with a mine-life of over 70 years. Please see the events flyer for registration details in this newsletter.

PCE Highlight Power Grid Connection Issues Dennis Slade, General Manager at Power Control Engineers (PCE) has seen many costly delays

with business relocating and expanding which require new power connections or the need for

capacity upgrades. This is mainly due to a misunderstanding of the processes involved and a

failure to recognise that these processes are a critical path issue.

Archer Test Device a World First Archer Enterprises have developed a unique test device which is sought after by worldwide manufacturers of automatic fire sprinkler systems in order to comply with ISO 6182 standards and to attain certification. Archer is the only company in the world to manufacture the sophisticated RTI Plunge Test Tunnel test equipment.

The uniquely shaped wind tunnel is a fully integrated solution with process control for temperature and velocity, sprinkler response time control and can measure minute differences in pressure. The tunnel was recently installed at Japan’s National Research Institute of Fire and Disaster with the Archer team spending five days to install and commission it and training Japan Fire Equipment Inspection Institute engineers.

“It’s one thing to manufacture a product, it is another thing to ensure that your customer understands it and will get the best return from it,” said Managing Director, Brad Byrne.

APP Partner with Anglican Care Anglican Care has appointed APP Corporation as their long term Project Management partner for the management and delivery of their capital works and property development portfolio. HunterNet Defence Forum 2014 Strategy

During the recent HunterNet Defence Forum, it was decided to form Hunter Defence Task

Forces to 1) consolidate regional support for Hunter Defence and 2) form specific Task

Forces focussed on specific opportunities and events.

Hunter Defence is an existing brand with the Hunter Business Chamber and HunterNet

provides support for Defence and Defence industry in the region.
